Vader could sense the man had no idea who he was. Also that the man was very good at what he did but just didn’t have the context and knowledge Vader has. He did everything he was supposed to and even stood up for himself, which probably slightly pleased Vader. The man lived.
This. Vader isn’t totally unreasonable, he’s totally willing to forgive a mistake, even one like this, if you’ve showed total competence otherwise.
Agreed. It probably amused him, knowing the guy had no idea how dead he was, but just kept talking anyways.

This exactly, he was being a very responsible soldier, and following his duties to a T. How would a fairly new soldier know about something that was stricken from the record, especially if he was a child during the Clone Wars? True. Vader only kills those who fails him or actually tries to directly violate their orders.
Vader typically kills over incompetence or failure. This officer, while certainly testing Vader's patience with his attitude was initially respectful to the Dark Lord, and did everything he was supposed to do and provided Vader with the materials he needed to get a lead on the Jedi.
Vader in his prime likely would have still not harmed the officer in these circumstances, but would have warned him to watch his tongue unless he likes it served up extra crispy.
Should be noted that in spite of the Major's attitude, he did honor Darth Vader's request to be addressed to as "Lord".
“Extra crispy” 😂
Vader in his prime was also more well known to the officers. Here he was still mostly a secret.
Probably would have told him not to choke on his aspirations.
NowhereGames518 Rogue One reference much? :D
I think he wasnt choked because he was still efficient in his work in the end, called Vader 'Lord' as asked and Vader was probably too busy thinking that the Jedi could be obiwan.
Jacques. Yep. Vader had his mind on other things. The Major was good at his job however and Vader hates failure and wasn’t stuck up or incompetent.

I hope they write a comic about Vader meeting an officer from Tatooine. Who was also a Slave
oo yes that would be great
I genuinely don't think Vader would care that he was a slave.
I could see him starting to care if the officer and Vader had an argument about loyalty, and the officer goes off on a tangent about how his mother dies from raiders, followed by tying in how the Empire had given him purpose or whatever, finalized with the fact that he would gladly kill all those who go against "justice" or whatever. Something that would slightly hit a nerve with Vader recently-ish after Episode 3 that would grant the officer Vader's respect.
But, again, it would need to be done *perfectly* . Vader is known for not giving two fricks about anything other than his Empire or whathaveyou.

Probably, much like a Paladin, she was hiding from the Empire but still wanted the people to see that she was a Jedi and have hope. She didnt hide she was a Jedi to the person in the beginning after all.
Flying in a standard Jedi star fighter with a jedi logo on it is so over the top, no one would possibly think she was a jedi. "I just bought it at an auction!" if anyone ever bothered to ask.

True. At first glance, everything they assumed was perfectly logical. It was certainly a more likely explanation than for a Jedi to have returned to the planet, and for their astromech droid to have destroyed the ship to avoid being detected.
In time, they WOULD have determined that it was an old Jedi starfighter. In fact, that conclusion would probably have taken another couple of hours, at most. Darth Vader merely sped along the process, likely because he personally recognized many of the pieces among the wreckage. He was a mechanically-inclined individual who had years of close experience with such ships, after all. One could probably even call him an expert on Jedi starfighters.

Vader respects competence, and he taught the officer a lesson through humiliation. Also agree that later in his career he had a reputation and authority to protect
Vader was still new and could not yet expect for an officer to know who he is. Also, the officer showed both guts, but was also wise enough to come to see the reassembly of the ship through the force as a proof of Vader's competence. In fact this is the most notable thing about this episode. The officer was not scared of Vader's power, he was impressed. And this, in turn, might have saved him.

Vader didn't kill the dude gere just because he did his job right.
Vader began the slaughter of imperial officers after two unsuccessful attempts on his life, after the events of this video. It was at that point he'd begun to kill off anyone incompetent or disloyal; but until then he was more consumed with the task of exterminating the remaining Jedi.
Vader couldn't as easily choke people when Tarkin was still his boss. After a big part of the command staff got blown up on the Death Star it left a power vacuum.

"The major quickly deduced that it was a bomb."
Rocket science at its finest.
If it's a bomb, then the ship was destroyed deliberately and maliciously, which rules out a malfunction or accident.
This means there's a suspect they need to apprehend. Pretty sure that was what he meant.
As opposed to a critical reactor failure in a thrown-together heap of junk. If it was that they'd be looking for the charred gobs of whoever was piloting the ship when it exploded.

literally anyone other than Palpie or Tarkin: *raises voice at Vader*... *dead*
I don't think Vader would have just chocked him out. He didn't fail him and he really didn't know who Vader was. Vader kills people for failing to work as needed while the Major had done his job. I think the EU has given the mistaken impression Vader is kill happy but he doesn't kill Ozzel when he questions him (because his advice was legitimate albeit wrong) he only kills him when he goes agaist Vaders orders and alerts the Rebels to their presence. Captian Needa is also killed but only when he looses a ship that by all rights they had in their grasp. Motti publicly questions Vader in front of other high ranking imperial officers and Tarkin who might outrank Vader on the death star, but Vader only chokes him when he starts to get disrespectful towards him and questions his position and authority. The point being Vader while he has a reputation of killing subordinates for every slight really only (in the movies) eliminates those in his chain of command who don't workout. the forces under him are a well oiled machine. The Major while he does question Vader really had no reason to know who Vader was, he only just established Vader was his superior moments before and was clearly confused on how Vader related to him in the chain of command. The Major also did two things that ensured that he wouldn't have been killed, one he found an important lead on the Jedi for Vader, and two and perhaps even more critically, he followed procedure and alerted Vader to the Jedi.
Imagine the major considered the emblem unimportant and didn't report it. Then later Darth Vader found out this guy let a Jedi go. The guy would've been toast.
Imagine how this guy felt when it finally hit him who Lord Vader was and how close to death he was!! 🤔

Assembling the ship while the major rants about it being a bomb and that he knows what it is has to be one of the best roasts I've ever seen.
He was being exceptionally polite to Vader given the circumstances.
I found his lack of knowledge disturbing...
What made you not kill him then
I found your death pretty sad
Maybe Vader gave him a break because he genuinely didn't know who he was, and since the Empire had just started they had a good reason to not have known him.
In my opinion, Vader didn't choke this major because 1. as you said, he was new, 2. he was focused on finding the Jedi and did not have the time to deal with the major and 3. he did not have a reputation to keep up with... yet.
In a few comics down the line, Vader is officially introduced to the Imperial military. To both stop individuals from attempting to assassinate him (let's be real, they could never do so; however, Vader was likely getting sick of stopping whatever he was doing to deal with them (kind of like those "bad guys" in videogames who can never actually defeat you, but you kill them because they are annoying)) and to show that he has *power* , he choked 7 or so officers in front of everyone.
From then, Vader had a "reputation" to keep up with. And, both as Anakin Skywalker and as Darth Vader, the man was very prominent when it came to keeping up his reputation to those around him.
Imperial Major: wait a minute.. who _ARE_ you?
Darth Vader: **visible confusion**
The thing is, Vader still sees himself as the good guy, the hero.
He doesn't kill imperial soldiers/officers for a moment of ignorant disrespect. He gives them an opportunity to correct.
He kills those he views as cowardly/useless (or worse) to the empire. Which is many, due to nepotism and corruption in the imperial officer corps.
By removing such dead weight, he increases the efficiency/capability of the imperial forces. From his point of view.
Since the imperial forces are the good guys, doing the good work, it all serves the greater good. The end justifies the means.

He did not get choked, because he (1) respected vader (2) vader sensed via the force he did not know him and (3) the inspector was honest and (4) relatively competent.
He was being very polite up until he started acting like he was in charge. Which is fair because he neither knew who he was or what he was ranked. I like to think Vader gave him the benefit of a doubt and let him go.

Vader: ,,I should go home and rethink my life.“
The Major did ONE thing that all but ensured his survival: he followed the instructions to inform this "Darth Vader" about anything with even the slightest connection to the Jedi.
As others have said, he clearly had no idea who Vader was. Yet he still notified him per the new directive. He also remained respectful, using the appropriate form of address, even when clearly irritated by Vader's assertion he was "wrong".
Vader always regarded competence as hugely important, as well as loyalty, and even initiative within certain bounds.
Remember, too, the Emperor himself told him he "didn't want to be ruling an Empire of the dead".
Pretty much every Empire officer or official Vader killed died for incompetence or for Vader to achieve a specific purpose. Killing this Major didn't fit either category, and indeed he'd shown he could be trusted to follow instructions; someone did have to search other parts of Coruscant, and this Major apparently was competent and could be trusted. Killing him would be against Vader's own interests.

Vader probably respected that the Major didn't back down and knew that he was a valuable asset to the empire. The hatred for jedi is a personal thing that only vader and the emperor truly understand. Vader also knew the importance of never letting a new order be established as jedi were the largest threat to the empire. That major was just doing his job and vader wanted to deal with this personally without too much attention brought to the jedi purge.
“You took everything from me”
“I don’t even know who you are.”
I mean yeah, the guy did his job with complete competence, hence why he wasn't choked out.
Vader probs knew this dude didn’t know who the hell he was so he’s like “you get a pass”
I think Vader knew that this major was going to be a loyal asset once he saw a display of the force. It isn't like that dude in the movies who Vader choked, that wasn't purely for his lack of respect, that was because he was arrogant and defiant. This character seems very much to be an "all business" serious type.

That man was strong he didnt show fear. Most of the people vader kills are those that show fear towards him.

The man was hard working, sincere and forthright. Vader seems to like those traits. It's rudeness and incompentance he hates.

Vader is much more commanding than that
"I hope it's a jedi. That would be so wizard."
Vader: "I run this whole Station."
Cafeteria Guard: "Oh, you're Jeff Vader? Hey guys, this guys Jeff Vader."
So Vader isn't completely heartless, it was probably obvious from the beginning that this man didn't know who Vader was, so he went easy on him. Had he been someone else who knew Vader and treated him that way, he would've died
Yeah, that officer had nooo clue how lucky he was not to get a throat hug from Vader.

Well, I guess from Vader's perspective, the Major had followed instructions (in spite of not thinking the incident worthwhile) = a PLUS. The Major didn't know Vader...and since Vader was a new presence = not really his fault.
Probably also more trouble than it was worth to kill the Major, and then try to find a replacement while an emergency was ongoing....
Vader must have known the officer had no idea who he was and probably wanted to keep it that way.
