  • In today's video, let's take a look at a set of seriously historically-important dive watches you can afford for under £1,000. These come from a background of fantastic Swiss and Japanese engineering and will remind you of their remarkable past achievements. The watches in this video bring to mind the achievements of the SEALAB experiments in the 1960s and even the creation of dive watches themselves in 1953.
    Featured Watches:
    - Zodiac Super Sea Wolf
    - Mido Ocean Star Decompression Timer 1961 Limited Edition
    - Certina DS PH200M
    - Certina DS PH500M
    - Seiko SRP151 & SRP153

Has to be the Certina's for me, particularly the stunning orange dial of the PH500. The retro design on the caseback is cool. Add in 80hrs of power reserve, a safety bezel that you have to depress and a Nivachron balance spring, at that price it's unbeatable. If heritage is your thing it has heaps of that too.

All great brands and history. I think Certina and Mido are a bit under the radar in North America. Other brands to check out in the same realm would be Eterna, Glycine and Yema. Both Zodiac and Seiko are of course top notch.

Good luck finding the Mido Ocean Star Decompression 1961 aka the Rainbow Diver. Prices have doubled since its release a few months ago.

I just don't get this: These watch have great historical significance and stories yet they let Rolex just run the market by having those who aren't in the know believe the Submariner is the only diver worth getting. Submariner is a great watch, but it's not the first and these stories show its not the most important either.
I did a college paper where we had to choose an advert to discuss its ethos, pathos, logos and I chose the Rolex Advert from the 60s. That advert had a diver exploring underwater caverns. It emphasized adventure. Now they emphasize status, this leaves an opening market for these companies to advertise the ethos that Rolex abandoned.

seanthomxx well, more often than we know, marketing is just superficial thing. Though, Rolex Submariner is better in every way than the watches featured in this video. Unfortunately, the other watches just don’t have the same capacity as Rolex to communicate their value and persuade the consumer, us.

The winner has to be Certina. Certina watches are of such a high standard of quality in design, build and finish that they should really be priced at twice their retail worth. Only reason why that they are not, is because they do not have the bank account of Rolex for mass publicity. I own a DS Podium Square Auto (Cod: C001.514.16.057.01) and its like looking at a master piece of art by Rodin. No wonder why I am constantly being approached by both girls and guys wanting to know what brand my beautiful watch is.
Armand, you need to do a review of some square face watches by the smaller or micro brands. Enough of round face watches. Give us a change!

Totally agree. Congrats on your watch. Unfortunately, I think the real reason they are often overlooked (though on the positive side are so affordable) is that they are a Swatch brand. As such they have to hold position at the lower level of the Swatch Portfolio, don't get the marketing budget of the other brands and are priced accordingly. Still, like Hamilton, great watches for the price!

While in the Marines in 1967, the ships store had a sale on watches, I picked up a Zodiac Seawolf for $120, my other choice was the Rolex Sub for $180, foolishly I picked the Zodiac because I thought at the time it was a sharper-looking watch, still do, but the Zodiac is long gone, and I still had the Sub it would be worth more than $10K

Using the inflation calculator in today's money a 1950s Blancpain 50 Fathoms would cost around $875 . Compare with the actual price of a modern 50 Fathoms $12,000.

Back then they were necessary tools, top of the line technology. They had to evolve to luxury goods and put the storyline that they are cool when they became completely unnecessary.

The zodiac is a killer for me I love the unique design, the mido wow never saw dial like this but wouldn't wear it, the most pick for me would be the ph200 I really thinking on getting it but still thinking about the mido ocean star titanium. Seiko with their overpriced limited again edition not a fan of that, but I like seiko

Great selection! Such fine designs and interest. Where has similar innovation gone today? All are strong designs. I'm a huge fan of both those Certinas. Superb value too. Zodiac nice as well. But the true classic has to be the Seiko. Unfortunately, the current Prospex models are let down by their unnecessary, crashing PS 'X' logo. Hideous.

What about the Lip Nautic Ski? They reissued that with an automatic movement, a far cry from the unusual r184 electronic movement of the original (that’s electronic but not quartz). An interesting super compressor style dive watch that in it’s original r184 form was also used by Jacques Cousteau’s diver along with the Subs, the fifty fathoms, the dogs and seamasters....

What about the Russian Vostok Amphibia? History, inovation and still affordable price.

    • @MrOptik1
      @MrOptik1 4 года назад

Vostok make rubbish watches man, i bought two and only one of them even started working.
You'd struggle to find such abnormalities in a Seiko or a Squale.
but on this brand if your watch is fucked thats normal and acceptable because just the Vostok way they do things.
I would not order a Vostok ever again.
Go for quartz time piece something logical.
It makes no sense buying a watch that doesn't work... I bought the 710 and the 420 and i plan to mod both, if i was just buying to wear daily i'd be overly let down by the fact my watch less than 24 hours wound and worn has now completely stopped.
Poor form Vostok... need to fix that shit before they go from a company known for relatively cheap time pieces with a quirky mil spec feel to just rubbish wannabe watches that are actually just total junk.
