    Thank you so much. I live in Jackson Heights, Queens and it's amazing how difficult it is to find lard and find anyone who can educate me like you have about how to take the pork fat and turn it into lard. You have begun to change my cooking, which means changing my life!

    I love this channel! I've been appreciating these homemade basics videos because it just showcases how complex our food is and what our food looks and tastes like when everything is made fresh. For some of us it can seem like a luxury to have everything fresh but videos like this inspire me to keep learning.

    This was a staple in America back in the 50s and 60s especially if you talked to someone who came through the depression era . We always had lard growing up that grandma and mom always used to

    I’ve wanted to try this, but just haven’t made that jump. I have seen a few videos from some of the homesteading ladies using their crock pots or a roasters. It’s cool that you can do this, I always save my bacon dripping for refried beans….oh my goodness, que sabroso.

    I buy rendered pork lard from the carnicería because it's so much easier. Rendered chicken fat (schmaltz) on the other hand, I do myself. I'll buy a bunch of fatty skins from the pollería to make a big batch ... I boil them, strain, cool, and separate the fat from the water. There's a reason pie crusts used to be made with non ultra-processed lard (aka crisco). Using the 'real deal' makes things taste so much better ... try it when making pot-pies! Mmmmm.

      I prefer homemade lard for its superior flavor and texture, but store-bought works too. When time is tight, a good brand is a great alternative. However, I'm hooked on homemade! Making your own chicken fat is impressive - it's scarce and pricey. Hopefully I can share my homemade process in a video tutorial soon!

      I haven't tried it myself, but it's definitely a method used by many. Just remember, the lard needs to render slow and low. 💪

    I didn't think you could freeze glass jars.

    • @VillaCocina
      @VillaCocina  3 месяца назад +4

      Not all glass jars are suitable for freezing, so be sure to use containers specifically labeled as 'freezer-friendly' or 'freezer-safe.' Straight-sided, wide-mouth mason jars work well for storing lard when done properly. Avoid jars with shoulders, as they can be prone to cracking. For more tips and details, head to my website!
