Jeff Nordengren also as the cans are hung, they're free to move making them abit harder to shoot. good hunting practice as rats and rabbits dont stand still.
Great idea, people don't understand that knocking down the cans brings a different level of satisfaction. It's just not the same if the cans are hanging.
I would like to see if that actually works but I am still thinking the same as other comments suggested and just hang the cans from the string for swinging targets.
I was thinking that when the video started. I thought he was going to tie weights to the other end. You could just hang them but I like having them stacked on a shelf.
It's nice to have a stationary target vs. just hanging the can from a string sometimes, but watching this made me think that if you attached some sort of a small weighted object (something that won't defect the bullet back at you) to a piece of string that hung a foot or two below the can, when the can is blasted off the board, the weighted object should almost "pull" the can back up and into its "reset" position, which would remove the need to have the long "reset" string or rope. Just an idea.
seen this video a few years back, it works great even at 50 yards, i added another washer under board to limit the fall to one foot so you can pull it up easier
Put weights on the strings and they will pop right back up after you knock one down . A little physics to calulate. Genius!!! Im glad i kept looking at these vids for ideas.
Hmm, weight on the other end of the string. Why not just fill the can with sand? It won't fly off the board any harder. I think his point was to be able to shoot the can off and be able to reset it quickly. I was thinking it might be good to dangle the can from a string, but then I thought about the effect wind might have on it. That would make hitting it more of a challenge.
To take it to the next level, attach the end of all 5 cords to a stick/spare broomstick. Then you can reset all the targets at once, and you won't have to hunt around on the floor for the end of the string.
If you use a small finishing nail instead of a washer, you'll be able to easily change out the can when it gets ragged from holes. Just tie your cord in the middle of the nail and slide into hole in can. I use a long needle nose pliers to reach the nail when removing it.
You have a great idea too. Limiting the fall is a good idea. If you want to do a video just on that extra washer, you can put it as a video response on this video.
That is a good idea, but I feel that the extra "weight" would not allow the can to have much movement. For example, a bb gun would barely knock this can off empty and a high powered rifle would go through the can so fast that you might not see it move. Just a thought. Also I like to see a can fly off when I hit it with a bullet.
Sharon Jean (my wife) sets my cans back up for me while I have another cold drink and reload. After 40 years of marriage she has gotten good at it. She also makes us a pic-a-nika basket with sammiches and picks up all my brass for me. That girl is awesome!! No string can replace her lol
Tie a semi-heavy weight to the other end of the string, maybe 2-5 pounds wouldnt know what works best cuz I haven't tried it, but I do know it will automatically pull that can up on its own rather than having to do it by hand. Obviously you would make sure that the weight hanging from the end of the string doesnt touch the ground while the target/can is sitting on the board. This is actually what I thought the video was going to show me when I saw him feed the string through the board.
Attach a spring to the bottom of the board where it attaches to the can. Every time you shoot it, it will get knocked away and immediately return. No need to pull a string each time.
Better, you could just hang the cans from the board by the string and let them swing free. The target doesn't need to reset (gravity does the work), and you can also shoot moving targets.
Good Idea. While watching I was thinking. What if you just put a heavy weight on the end of the string that was still hanging off the ground. when the round hit the can, the weight would pull the can back into place on its own. might work, might not.
What if you used about 18" of string and tied something heavier on the bottom. Would it allow the can to be knocked off, but automatically reset due to the weight on the end of the string?
Pretty clever. I wonder if attaching a weight to the bottom would make it reset itself after the force of the bullet knocks it over. Would be better for longer range plinking.
Bin Ly It would have to be a heavy weight for one of these cans, and the bullet would pass through so fast, I really doubt the can would get enough force to come off the wood.
Instead of 30 ft of string, just use 2 ft of string with a spring. That way the can is able to wiggle (so you know you hit it), but then it resets automatically.
Pretty neat. I just attach my cans to 8" springs than attach it to a board or place over a peg in the ground. Thing moves around like crazy and after a few seconds it stops.
Or u can jusy use a counter weight so you dont have to pull the string all the time. But this also isnt a good idea because once you shoot your target with any ammo other than 22 your cans destroyed anyways
This is a “resettable target” not a resetting one. Pulling the can is no different than putting it back. Strings will get bound up, dry rotted, shot, or pull right out of the can. Just my opinion
Also been thinking of building a resetting target for my airguns. But I kinda finally came to think that maybe the best target for me is just a few inches big round metal plate hanging from chains inside of a metal box (or this at least for longer distances). The swinging little clinger will surely notify me if I hit it. The box is just for collecting the pellets - for environmental reasons in the long run. Buut. A multi-target resetting system would of course be nice for-fun action airpistol shooting competitions with friends.. :)
If you shoot co2, save your empty cartridges. You can poke a hole in a coke bottle lid and insert the spent cartridge for a quick impromptu airgun target. 👍🏻
Tie a big knot or put another washer few inch below the board so it doesn't fall very far and just a little pull it will already set back on top.Try tying all the can's string together so you only have to pull one string and all of the cans will be set.And tie the string that you are going to pull onto something close to your waist level so you don't have to pick it of the ground.
Try putting a knot under the board that only allows the can to move a little bit but not enough to fall completely over/off so it automatically resets. You no longer need the long string and the can will react enough to see you hit it.🤯
There might be a way where all the cans could be attached to a common bar, then to reset them all you just pull on a string attached to the bar, and it pulls all the can back into place at once. Just a thought.
nice idea but just add a weight instead of you pulling it, something slightly heavier so the can has a chance to react and wont be held down with a ton of weight then the weight will just keep it standing up... problem solved hassle free! im making this idea for my 9mm
Another method we use at our club range is very simple just a 3-4 foot metal spike stuck in the ground with the can placed over it , the can makes a good clatter as well there when hit.
Now I know that people are going to say "well why can't I just put weights in it?" Well knocking over something with a gun looks better and you can know if you hit it or not so that is why people like this
Using about 2 feet of string per can, tie a heavy object to the opposite end of the can. This will allow the can to fall to let you know you hit your target but then will automatically reset because the heavy object at the opposite end of the can will automatically fall pulling the string down and resetting the can each time!
This is a great idea but it would be better to tie it to the board just leave a bit of slack so you know u hit it and not too much that it falls down just enough for it to move a bit
yeah but its not gonna be hit and fall...just pretty much drill a hole as big as an inch, have the can with the open side down and the hole on top. then have a long screw or nail as long as the can with a washer bigger than the drilled hole pin it down. now when you shoot the can, it should juggle alot instead of falling down.
A little more efficient and less pulling, drill some more holes, string up some more cans, and have your pull cord pull all of them back up at once! Actually just putting elastic on them you'd see when you hit them, but they'd never fall all the way off, just wobble around a bit.
i drive a screw through he board turn the board over so the screw is facing up and wind the can onto the screw thread. this way the can will wobble when hit but no fall until it is well worn out
just hand the cans from a 2x4 , when u shoot it they swing, eventually stop swinging, works for long distance without a 500 ft string, and u can challenge ur self and try to hit the moving target(helps when your trying to pop pests with a pistol or a .22
er...if you're going to go to all that trouble, you should just suspend the can from the board, using the string and washer, and it becomes a live target everytime you hit it--with no reset necessary.
Upgraded you idea qnd swapped 5he sting for a spring, drilled a larger hole in the wood the length of the spring, bolted the bottom of the can to the top of the spring, and screwed the bottom of the spring into the bottom of the hole drilled into the wood.
I'm thinking if you tie a can on the other end it would drop one and pull the other up and keep reseting it's self but that would take a like engineering
Tie big lead fishing sinkers on the can line so when you shoot it it falls off and automatically resets just an idea it uses gravity to reset if it's still hangs in the air
Too much effort. Just hang the cans underneath the board.
brilliant
Jeff Nordengren also as the cans are hung, they're free to move making them abit harder to shoot. good hunting practice as rats and rabbits dont stand still.
I use metal coat hanger wires that I make hooks out of . I have a shooting frame I made out of old scrap 2x4s . The cans don't fall off.
That's what I thought he was gonna do lol
Put heat rocks in the bottom
Great idea, people don't understand that knocking down the cans brings a different level of satisfaction. It's just not the same if the cans are hanging.
hang a fishing weight to the bottom, light enough to drop off when it got shot, and heavy enough to pull the can right back to its original position.
I was just thinking the same thing.
I would like to see if that actually works but I am still thinking the same as other comments suggested and just hang the cans from the string for swinging targets.
I was thinking that when the video started. I thought he was going to tie weights to the other end. You could just hang them but I like having them stacked on a shelf.
Man I love your idea nice one 👍 👌 👏

exactly what i thought he was going to do lol
seen this video a few years back, it works great even at 50 yards, i added another washer under board to limit the fall to one foot so you can pull it up easier
***** Great idea on the second washer
Put weights on the strings and they will pop right back up after you knock one down . A little physics to calulate. Genius!!! Im glad i kept looking at these vids for ideas.
I have to admit that I got the idea from somewhere else, but I modified it a little to make it my own. Thank you.
Wow, thank you. I think that is the first video I have had favorited.
Why don't you hang a weight from the string under the board so when it reacts to being shot the weight pulls it back into position.
I hear ya bud, that's ignorant to walk 100yards unravelling string the whole way. Very stupid vid.
that's what I was thinking but have the weight be another can
Hmm, weight on the other end of the string. Why not just fill the can with sand? It won't fly off the board any harder. I think his point was to be able to shoot the can off and be able to reset it quickly. Thank you for the info, those are some great ideas. Next time I use it, I might use a some of those ideas, thanks

Don't forget to obey the soda can hunting laws. There is a fine for removing the tab, too.
+Richard Kelver ~~~yep its getting crazy these days.
There needs to be a law protecting these can's.
That is a good idea, but I feel that the extra "weight" would not allow the can to have much movement. Mate I'll tell you, you are a bloody genious can't believe I've never thought of this
That is a very good idea and will have to do that in the future.
Not a bad idea. One could also make hanging targets out of the cans, string, and the board.
Sharon Jean (my wife) sets my cans back up for me while I have another cold drink and reload. After 40 years of marriage she has gotten good at it. She also makes us a pic-a-nika basket with sammiches and picks up all my brass for me. That girl is awesome!! No string can replace her lol
smart thinking, this would be perfect for a target up a hill, definitely going to use this.
Tie a semi-heavy weight to the other end of the string, maybe 2-5 pounds wouldnt know what works best cuz I haven't tried it, but I do know it will automatically pull that can up on its own rather than having to do it by hand. Find an elastic rope tie it to weights below it.
interesting idea

Great idea, I'm gonna make one.
great idea
I do not get it either, but I just go with the punches.
What if you used about 18" of string and tied something heavier on the bottom. Would it allow the can to be knocked off, but automatically reset due to the weight on the end of the string?
Cut out holes 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You can just drop a long bolt at the bottom of the can through the wood in that way the cans will never fall over
barry zome I think he's going for the effect of knocking the can over so you get some shot to target satisfaction.
Super simple. Super cool!
I did the same but tied the strings off to the board. Knock the can off and it becomes a swinging target underneath the board….keep shooting😎
Very helpful. But i must ask, why not just screw the can down?
Pretty clever. I wonder if attaching a weight to the bottom would make it reset itself after the force of the bullet knocks it over. Would be better for longer range plinking.
Bin Ly It would have to be a heavy weight for one of these cans, and the bullet would pass through so fast, I really doubt the can would get enough force to come off the wood.
SpecificLove 2oz fishing sinker?
Put a length restrictor on the string so the can won't fall all the way to the ground. Then the reset pull will be much shorter.
Instead of 30 ft of string, just use 2 ft of string with a spring. That way the can is able to wiggle (so you know you hit it), but then it resets automatically.
Phillip Perry That is a very interesting idea.
if you hang a weight on the string, you wont need to pull the string :)
RiflesForReason good idea
@big boi course you would know unless your deaf?
Simple is always best.
Pretty neat. I just attach my cans to 8" springs than attach it to a board or place over a peg in the ground. Thing moves around like crazy and after a few seconds it stops.

very interesting
Good one.

Quick question wouldn't it be easier to just pull it tight and tie it of at the other end so it can't go anywhere unless you cut the string
Also been thinking of building a resetting target for my airguns. Sweet, I would love to see you using it in a video. Thank you for watching
Am I the only one who first heard his voice, and thought to himself "Damn..wow...Ashton Kutcher made a video on shooting cans!!"...
I liked this tho I used it on a smaller scale for my 80 lbs cross bow
Try putting a knot under the board that only allows the can to move a little bit but not enough to fall completely over/off so it automatically resets. You no longer need the long string and the can will react enough to see you hit it.🤯
Thanks
Add a counter weight heaver than the can and the can should right itself.
That will prevent the can from being knocked over.
Alan Hanley not if it's lighter than the weight transfered from the projectile to the target when hit.
There might be a way where all the cans could be attached to a common bar, then to reset them all you just pull on a string attached to the bar, and it pulls all the can back into place at once. Just a thought.
HEY, PRETTY NEAT IDEA!!! THANKS
thank you
Have your grandkids go put the cans back up.
Take a like 5 pound weight hanging on the other side of the string so the can moves then ot pulls its self back into place
I can not remember what was in the can, but I just took the label off.
Thanks for watching.
Gotta give it to him that's smart
nice idea but just add a weight instead of you pulling it, something slightly heavier so the can has a chance to react and wont be held down with a ton of weight then the weight will just keep it standing up... problem solved hassle free! im making this idea for my 9mm
This is the most awesome video for all of us fat and lazy people.
Xylo Logic LOL
Offensive
where do you get those cans from? they're perfect
+Matt Waldron They hold canned vegetables
LOL! This reminds me of when people ask where I get bottles for my homebrew beer. "I know here to get beer bottles"... I buy them full of beer.
from a Mexi -CAN.
*FACEPALMS*
Another method we use at our club range is very simple just a 3-4 foot metal spike stuck in the ground with the can placed over it , the can makes a good clatter as well there when hit.
Usually I just impale soda cans on large nails I have on my split rail fence posts. But this was really creative.
Now I know that people are going to say "well why can't I just put weights in it?" Well knocking over something with a gun looks better and you can know if you hit it or not so that is why people like this
ok thanks

Very true, it is a great target for kids learning to shoot.
Tie a heavy object/weight to the string and when you shoot the can it wont move.. Or just nail the can to the board.
Very cool ! and the cost is perfect
This is a great idea but it would be better to tie it to the board just leave a bit of slack so you know u hit it and not too much that it falls down just enough for it to move a bit

You pull the string back, and shoot. it knocks the can off so you can't shoot it anymore. well, YES YOU CAN!!!! :D
er...if you're going to go to all that trouble, you should just suspend the can from the board, using the string and washer, and it becomes a live target everytime you hit it--with no reset necessary.
can you not get any targets better than that?
Upgraded you idea qnd swapped 5he sting for a spring, drilled a larger hole in the wood the length of the spring, bolted the bottom of the can to the top of the spring, and screwed the bottom of the spring into the bottom of the hole drilled into the wood.
...and when you pull on the string and it snags, just pull real hard and yank the board off the sawhorse.
I'm thinking if you tie a can on the other end it would drop one and pull the other up and keep reseting it's self but that would take a like engineering
I look at it more as an efficient thing
cool this will be great for the kids and their pellet guns at the cottage.
bungie cord.
Maybe tie a rock to the string letting it hang under the board then you won't have to pick anything up off the ground except your brass.
I knew exactly where you were going with this when I saw the hole at the bottom of the can when you first knocked it over
I seen Clint Eastwood use this method, except he had six cans, and six shots. He asked the cans, do you feel lucky today, well do ya punk?
what a simple and good target!
Could you add a hanging weight to each string so the pull of the weight pulls the can back to the upright position?
Cut the line a foot away from the can the. Put weight on it so when you shoot the can will fall off and the weight will pull it back onto the board
Why not put a screw in the bottom of can? Yup it won’t fall off but will make a sound when hit just a thought!
Tie big lead fishing sinkers on the can line so when you shoot it it falls off and automatically resets just an idea it uses gravity to reset if it's still hangs in the air
It would've been funny to see the first 39 seconds in black and white.. lol
loosely carriage bolt them to the board and be done with it
