You need only to see the comment section to realise there's a break in the fanbase between story fans and gameplay fans, sadly. Can't we have more games that're great in both aspects?
@@Vulpas Even older pre-awakening games had major issues balancing both great story and great gameplay. I would argue the last one was thracia and even that has some small but noticeable caveats on the gameplay front.
@@Danitron904 Sure, they weren't perfect, but some are products of their time, we can't expect much of the NES after all, but it was good from a contemporary perspective. Awakening was just never good and had problems in every area. Generic art, bad story, terrible characters, etc.
@@Vulpas Over time i became fond of the analysis method of comparing the game to the company's average output at the same time, and to the average output in the same gaming generation. So games like Snes Mystery of the Emblem by that logic can be judged as poor because it's a game from Nintendo that looks bad compared to all other franchises released around the same time and before, and it's also bad compared to other 16 bit rpgs from 93-94. The following Snes games also end up in a big disadvantage because the Snes had a big jump of technical quality in 94-96... but the disparity isnt as big as the case of Mystery, that truly looks bad and there's no way to defend those graphics. Sticking to the same logic it's possible to conclude that the strongest FE games of their time were the GBA trilogy, because they look and play incredibly well, had a nice evolution from the Snes in all technical aspects, and they keep up well with other early 00s Gba games from Nintendo and others. The battle animations are notable even today... and that cant be said about a lot of stuff on the Gba (without a large coat of nostalgia and fanboy bias). And following the logic, POR had an unfortunate decline in technical quality, because those graphics are not respectable for the game's release time, comparing to other Nintendo releases and other big company releases on the GC and Ps2 at that same time. And the two DS games are also mediocre in the same sense. Of course that is not the single factor to judge a game, but it plays a good part of the judgement.
There is absolutely no way you've played every Fire Emblem game and came out saying that Fates' gameplay is "nothing great." That is pure insanity. Fates: Conquest has some of THE BEST gameplay and map design in the entire series! 🤦🏻
@@hanzou1238 I find birthright to be perfectly adequate. It still has the incredible reclassing and pair uo mechanics, just in more straightforward. Seeing as BR was designed to be on the 'easy' side, I think it does its job well.
@@hanzou1238 Birthright is simply Conquest for casual players. That's why the maps are more basic. The gameplay is still solid, it's just... easy. Revelation is the same, except far more experimental. It's very gimmicky.
Glad to see both sacred stones and blazing blade so high. Personally I would put blazing blade first, sacred stone second and Path of radiance third since these were the ones I played back in the day But pretty good rank anyway
Erick's comments on Engage and Fates really broke my heart... I know the majority of criticism of these two games is the story but come on, the games still have advantages such as varied map designs full of gimmicks, cool battle animation, new gameplay mechanics, also side characters with unique, funny personalities and designs. For example, in Engage I really like Alcryst, Diamant, Lapis, Citrrine and Fogado. And in Fates I liked Leo, Elise, Effie, Kaze, Oboro, and Laslow
The problem with most of the characters in those games is that they are one dimensional. Taking Alcryst for example, all he does is whine and complain about his low self esteem but we never get to learn why he has these issues so what we get is a whiny sack that does nothing else. In contrast Bernadetta in 3H starts out this way but we actually get to learn what caused her to have these fears making her a much more likable character and sympathetic as well.
It’s ridiculous how Overpowered Titania is the entire game in Path of Radiance. She shreds everything immediately and then moves on to one shotting everything.
Wouldn't call it the worst game in the series, but I can understand. I will forever remember how the first trailer felt worst than getting friendzoned a few weeks later.
It's funny you call the later games cast lacking originality when the older casts are generic at best and one note at worst especially echoes never understood how people think this game is any bit good it's generic on all sides especially how limited the cast is on supports. Only positive is grima being better than all of echoes combined and a post game to show alm getting there. No lunatic mode was always trash on replays. Basically the Fe games need to stop being pokemon and only giving us good stuff once a gen and share what really works for later games. Also stop with the timeskips Fe games. They don't work especially in 3 houses where nothing changes and that's without how boring the gameplay is in 3h and repetitive the routes are.
I highly agree with the generic part. FE wasn't known for its story. Three Houses ended up going beyond the expectations for the modern fanbase. You can see how much they really didn't care about the story when transitioning from Genealogy to Thracia.
@@eyesofdeathperception6730 honestly even 3 houses isn't as good as most say. I played it recently and it's such a drag to go through the same or similar stages story and plot beats. Fates while not well written at least was unique in stages and storylines plus doesn't make you drag your feet in the hub world like 3 houses that started the trend of fishing games and such that engage also had. I mean genealogy is better in how they did a timeskip too as 3h cast barley change at all in those 5-7 years byleth is asleep. Older games from gba to before are very simple cast members that hardly do much. I never hear any fans from most of those casts. I mean shadow dragon based on og for example some of the guys are recruited only because they wanna date Marths girl which funny enough is what these fans also hate about later games which is irony I never really played Leif's game but they did have to do a lot of work making stuff up for Leif to get a bad guy as he can't defeat seliphs foes which was a messy storyline to do in a sidequel
@@ivanbluecool I definitely have to disagree with the idea that the characters "barely changed" because they definitely did have an impact. Even if it was just a single change to their character. I also have to disagree with the whole hub world thing. Although I can understand that it may have its issues, it's a game that was designed around with the hub in mind. FE3H functions differently in comparison to the average FE game. Because they have more of a focus on character growth instead of replacing a unit and such. It's supposed to be a simple stress-relief idea. It can be better, and they could've handled it like how Three Hopes handled the hub world. I feel like the real fix it needed are deeper mechanics in the hub worlds with better rewards. One of the other complaints I hear about is that you have to run around a lot. But there's literally a teleportation option. But that's just my opinion on that matter.
@@eyesofdeathperception6730 The cast are basically the same in 3h. Only ones who got some character are the ones who stick to their houses and country but one conversation changes that completely. 3h also could have done better not having house specific storylines as one house has the importance to lenato and another the brother with the dangerous weapon. If it was all one cast instead you'd have a complete story not a lack of it with each playthrough where it's deeper on one end and shallow on the rest. Lenato red brother and black knight all need different routes to understand which is a problem as all the main stories are the same even with the teleport system running around 3houses basically takes a massive sludge hammer to the pace of the game. Hub worlds are good to give you a second to breath as I didn't like that with the older games where you go from one map to the next. Fates was better as you can get some stuff done with little time wasted while engage went a bit too simple. 3 houses was trash and forced you to do all these activities just for extra gains on the characters and even needing to get edegard supports up and find her on a specific date to get her route as if you miss it you got church automatically. Engage gave you a training area which if done with the skirmishes of 3houses could have been a good combo to have if you want to super train one unit but engage non story maps level up as you do so it's basically not worth it. Plus it's a pain to go around finding the cast so it does the opposite. Even the defenders f 3h don't like this system and imagine doing it 4 times. Plus the support system is bad being tied to story forcing you to either buy them for renown or grind up with limited days
@@ivanbluecoolI agree that splitting the story kinda ruined it. IMO it would have been better if Part 1 you didn't teach a specific house, or it simply decided your starring house but could recruit anyone until the betrayal happened. Siding with Edelgard could still be an optional bonus but shorter route, while the other three very similar routes are just one route that reveals the whole story to you regardless of which you picked.
Top gameplay wise: fates gba era awakening engage. Top story wise: 3 houses awakening blazing sword genealogy. Top cast: awakening genealogy (side a) houses Game wish I could play; Ike's series so I'm leaving my opinion out on them but they look fun so I probably would love them
What ??? Story wise Awakening has the third worst (engage and Fates exist) , I think it's the worst cast but you can probably tell otherwise this one ismostly subjective... But it has by FAR the worst level design of the franchise. FE always had great mechanics so it makes it the worst ever gameplay-wise and it's non negociable. They didn't understand AT ALL what makes a good map and it's genuinely embarrassing to see how much it's a failure on this aspect. Also it has the worst difficulty of the franchise (except if you're a new player then it's FE5)
I really loved battling in Engage, but the castle part was soo boring and such a hassle that eventually I quit the game because I just couldn’t stand running around my base one more time
Can be summarized as: Edgy revenge with "mature" plot - goood SoL, more fun characters and almost anything else - trash The whole Engage reasoning is just personal bias about modern politics? What? The game was pretty good, gameplay was arguably the most refined The FE purists always act like the older FE characters were complex and unique, most of them looked generic as they come and their personalities were one note and tropey as hell Hearing how they "animified" and "weeaboofied" FE lol, FE was always anime People were callimg Ike gay since forever, speaking of Ike...i just watch the whole PoR and RD games and my god the characters are so stiff, Ike is paifully boring and another edgelord after revenge archetype and the story is nothing to write home about either That’s just my opinion ofc but seeing it as the best one really puts things into perspective for me
@@Vulpas I understand that, feel the same about Unicorn Overlord and Eiyuden Chronicle but that is not the game's fault, the game is fine I know Erick hates it because of the character designs and because it is not edgy and mature enough or whatnot, i know the guy
It was anime, but different type anime before Awakening. Before Awakening FE was more like generic fantasy anime, but now is also generic fanatsy anime but with UWU cringe.
My favorite video game ever. I've played them all too and this time, I'm sorry, but I don't agree at all. Engage the worst and right after the recent trilogy?? If one has never played FEmblem I might have agreed. My favorites are Awakening, Conquest, The sacred stones and Engage. For me "Echoes" is the worst, with absolutely terrible game mechanics; It doesn't even feel like you're playing an FEmblem. Penultimate there is "Three houses" which pierces the spirit and mechanics of the game...
I mostly agree with your ranking. Here's my Top 5 Fire Emblem games: 1. Path of Radiance 2. Sacred Stones 3. Blazing Blade 4. Genealogy of Holy War 5. Thracia 776.
Blazing Blade above Path of Radiance because the 3-D was so bad that people turn off battle animations. Fire Emblem is more fun when the battle animations are entertaining, and were only good when they were legendary 2D sprite art. At 3D, Majority of fans ended up, turning off battle animations, which proves the point.
Great list. Geneology is my faviourite game of all time but I haven't enjoyed any game post Awakening besides Shadows of Valentia because of various reasons like bad story or unnecessary stuff like school simulator. The series just doesn't feel the same anymore
The ones I played are Awakening - cool but not my favorite FE GBA (blazing blade?) - enjoyed but only did Lyn's Chapters 3 Houses (Empire route) - Enjoyed the story, but battle maps felt lacking Shadows of Valentia - My favorite so far, though I rage quit during Duma's tower
Happy to see PoR as number 1. It was also my first FE and I still think it's the best one. It's biggest flaw is the slow animations but that can be fixed with emulation. Fates being so low and telling the gameplay is nothing special hurts me tho. Conquest is still the most fun FE game gameplay wise imo.
@@kevinburke1325 Worse story, Too many characters to the point that some don't have availability, overly nerfed Laguz and Sages, Hard mode makes you count squares and removes WT.
@ZER0lPT oh yeah, I can see where nerfed characters would be annoying. The story I thought was really fleshed out. I loved the final duel between Ike and the black knight because Ike reaches his full potential.
I don’t have an issue with it tbh Clearly not quite as good as Three Houses which may be the best one.. However those that choose FE 7 or Awakening as the best are really not wrong either
@@Mintcar923 It really depends on what you're looking for. But in terms of gameplay, many would actually say that FE Engage does better in that department. I really feel like many people absolutely loved Three Houses. But because FE Engage didn't deliver the same tone, everyone started bashing it.
It is not about the "same tone". Engage story and characters were so shit that Engage is the first game ever I fall asleep when listening to the dialogue
@@gamept571 The story is literally reminiscent of the usual story in past GBA games. It was purposely made to be as basic as possible because the gameplay was the purpose.
I have only played FE GBA or Blazing Blade and Three Houses but I feel like the balancing around permadeath kind of ruins the gameplay of this series. Because it has permadeath, but expects you to be able to finish the game with no casualties, they make your characters overpowered and they force opponents to stand still like idiots until you bait them out, to prevent you from getting overwhelmed. Darkest Dungeon, Xcom and Battle Brothers are some of my favorite games with permadeath. Those games expect you to lose your character often, so they provide you with ways to gain new recruits and they make the encounters a lot more hard and unpredictable, which is more fun. I first tried Three Houses on Hard, only having played Blazing Blade before, but after the first 5 hours or so, I was sick of one shotting everything and always overwhelming my opponents. The rich character development system was starting to feel pointless. So I decided to restart on Maddening. It was challenging, way too hard, but atleast now I had to focus on my builds and I really strategize to win every battle. It was way too time consuming though, and I wish there was a middle ground. Three Houses's storytelling was also massively flawed, but it has great storylines within it. I loved Dimitri's personal story. They tried something that I haven't seen before. All all the side character stories and Edelgard's story were also strong. But my problem is with how isolated, short and simplistic each route feels. Edelgard comes across as a cartoon villain in Dimitri's route, and Dimitri comes across as a stubborn fool in Edelgard's route. I can't say much about Claude since I haven't finished his route, but he felt irrelevant overall. I feel like it was a big mistake to make 3 routes. They should have just locked you into Dimitri's route and included all the key storylines from the other routes. That way you would have felt more conflicted about Edelgard and they could have prolonged Dimitri's route, giving him a stronger redemption arc, and possibly making him more aware of what was going on behind the scenes, and possibly making more enemies. Most players played just one route and it really feels like they got an incomplete version of the game.
I think another part of what hurts Three Houses story is Byleth being the main character. I think having the lords be your pov character would have vastly improved the story. I get having the 'self-insert' main character so you can 'immerse yourself more' ig, but imo it really hurts a lot of storytelling, especially in Three Houses. I really like your idea of having one cohesive story rather than trying to split it between the three (four-ish), especially since the non Azure Moon routes feel rushed and incomplete in many ways and even AM gets rushed towards the end. So much more could have been explored and expanded upon, especially since so much of the existing story is locked behind the alternate routes and character conversations that most people don't see or even just alternate dialogue options. It's hard to get the full picture, even if you're like me and have spent an ungodly amount of time on fedatamine 😅
13:04 that sounds less like a localization 'error' and more like a slight on the intelligence of westerners. Kind of like how Capcom reduced the damage numbers in Monster Hunter so that it would be easier for us to understand, or how Square Enix made a final fantasy game specifically with westerners in mind, and making it easier to boot.
Why, what happens in Engage that has to do with real world politics? I don't see how a video game made in Japan has much to do with the political landscape in Mexico where Erick lives.
@@acidwizard6528 I believe it has to do with how they don’t address characters with there proper gender pronouns. Honestly it’s a nothing burger. Also people were complaining on how they weren’t direct for the marriage for a 10 year old you can marry in the game. So yeah try to justify that.
@@eyesofdeathperception6730 I haven't played it so I don't know what could be politically charged. I am against censorship obviously, but if you want to play as a gay character that should be fine. It is a "role playing game" right? Maybe they should have added that only certain characters would go along with your gay advances instead of the unrealistic idea that you could be gay with anyone.
@@acidwizard6528 Honestly, I'm perfectly okay with the "everyone is bi" idea. For multiple reasons, but I'll go with the main one. This game by itself isn't really realistic to begin with. The designs themselves are bizarre enough. It's not like their sexuality plays an actual part of the story anyways. At least in my opinion. It definitely was censored. They made a decision where they excluded characters either because of their age, or... I don't even know. Even when being paired in a normal relationship, they just took it out.
I genuinely don't know if 'Engage" is the WORST, but it definitely pissed me off the worst out of every title because they took one step forward with the game play and graphics, but took four backwards in every other aspect.
The amount of salt in these comments is hilarious, I generally agree with your ratings here. (though I would put FE4 a good amount higher, and probably rank the DS games lower).
Great list! However I freaking love Engage. I know im in the minority but it reminded me of Fates, which i also love lmao. And no, im not trolling. Fates, awakening and engage are my top 3 😶🌫️
My own ranking from worst to best would be: -Awakening -Fates (BR=>Rev=>CQ, although they have different good points) -Blazing Sword -Engage (I could call it the worst game in the series, but settings feelings aside and accepting that cringe is subjective, I can't) -New Mystery of the Emblem -Shadow Dragon -Binding Blade -Radiant Dawn -Three Houses -Echoes -Sacred Stones -Genealogy -Mystery of the Emblem -Path of Radiance -Thracia Seriously, I can't help but think you missed something with Thracia because the game gives so much tools that many map are trivial or easy to trivialized, and those that are nore are easy are made to force you to use those tools (staffs and scroll stacking comes at the top of my mind) Still think that none of those games are without interest (except maybe awekening)and that nothing past Engage would be below a 10/20 if I had to rate the games (unsure for BS though). I haven't ranked the ness games because I haven't played them. If someone wan't me to explain some of those rankings, I'll gladly do it.
Awakening isnt great but I've definitely played worse lol I'd like to know why Mystery of the Emblem is so high for you. Personally I thought the map design was all over the place and really hated the dismount mechanic as it felt like it was more of an inconvenience than anything else. I guess it kinda made some sense that you wouldn't bring mounts inside but a more robust reclassing system for mounted units would have made them less painful to use when dismounted imo.
@@fellascallmethedrinkit is by far the worst, I've played all 17 games it's not even close. It's so fucking bad that even difficulties doesn't even make sense. And story wise it's bad too the only good thing is those amazing musics
Man, I have some of the most controversial fire emblem opinions. Awakening, Fates, 3 Houses, and Engage are my top picks because they have casual mode. I played and beat 7 and path of radiance but couldn’t enjoy them without save scumming.
That's the principe of a strategy rpg, it's like playing chess with no difficulty and rewind. People who like the genre basically wanted to be challenge. I typically respect all your lists and while i don't always agree with them i can see where you are coming from. But putting Engage last is just embarrassing, it has the best gameplay in the whole franchise. And while I agree it's not the best. It's still my 2nd recommendation after 3 houses for anyone new to the franchise. Personally I would put it top 5 and everything I don't like about the faiths did worse. You definitely didn't get far if you put it last.
Well what we do probably agree on it’s the GOAT of the genre as far as the series itself.. I quite like its competitors too however like Valkyria Chronicles & some of those standalones like Jeanne DArc, Triangle Strategy and most recently Unicorn Overlord

@@charsage1036 i can't explain it all, there îs too much without having to write a paralogue. But let me gjve you one of many example. Rhea. She îs awful. She starts pretty well în white clouds, but her character îs ruined în The time skip. În azure moon her character barely exists, she doesn't even appear în The main story. În verdandt wind she îs just an exposition bot for a bad villain aka nemesis, who appears randomly în The final chapter, lazy writing. And în crimson Flower, she is just a brainless angry kid who screams "give back my mommyyyyyy, professor!" her character was wasted and în silver snow she îs not even play able, she just goes mad în The final chapter. The Time skip overall îs repetitive and bland. The gameplay is really un balanced and bad. If you enjoy hard mode which îs no challenge, killing every enemy on a Boring map, good for you. Maddening îs untested and awful, with Bush spawn and garbage stats. If you don't prepare a specific build, you can lose în chapter 13 and be softlockedb for good. The maps also are too repetitive, we have like 7 maps repeated over and over again, and it has no strategy most of the time. The gameplay is also unbaalanced, with maps that can be skipped with a warp user în 1 turn. And many spells and weapons that just ruin any challenge and Bălance. It's not a bad game, just not a good fire emblem game. And The story îs overrated cuz most of the characters are attractive, despite having huge writing problems like rhea. And all The 4 routes feel incomplete. Like we fight the slitheribg în verdandt wind but not în crimson Flower. Nemesis appears for no reason as a lame final boss with a hype song. FE fans care a lot more about non-gameplay elements because frankly a lot of them are migrated turn-based JRPG fans who always treat gameplay as a backdrop for the story & characters
@@kskr8610 That is correct. At least for me, I was aware of fire emblem since radiant dawn but the grid based strategy made the series seem too difficult and intimidating to get into as a kid. It was only when awakening gave lots of accessibility options, getting incredible reviews and having unique mechanics like the child units, only then did I seriously pay attention. Probably most modern fire emblem fans are like this too. Gameplay is extremely important, but good jrpgs excel in every category instead of just pure gameplay focus. As a genre they often cannot get away with having no story because usually the gameplay is a lot longer than a 2d platformer or a fortnite match. People have much higher standards. More accurate would be "FE fans care a lot more about non-*strategy* elements"
Thanks for sharing, I agree with most your list but for me Roy game is the best as I love him from super smash brose but but Ike first game on gamecube was really something special ❤
Yeesss! Finally a FE ranking! This was the first RPG series I have ever played. Ike's introduction in Super Smash Bros Brawl introduced me into this epic series. Radiant Dawn is still my second most favourite videogame of all time with over 200 playthroughs. This opened me the door to all the other games. Played all of them aside of the two NES ones. Can't really say I really dislike any game as much as I love its gameplay. Though yeah, some games have not the best story, but it is not too bad for me since I play this series for its gameplay. I absolutely love the ideas of Thracia 776, but some mechanics really did not work like no guaranteed hits and misses. I totally hope for a balanced remaster (not talking about balance hacks). After all it is the game where staves matter the most, consider it as "staff-wars" of FE. I am so happy to this spotlight of FE here!
What about Thracia 776 is "broken RNG" and "rushed" I'm confused on that. It's a solid game with some divisive mechanics but nothing about it seems rushed, are you sure we played the same game?
I definitely wouldn't say worse. When knowing about the small history behind the game, it feels more like you're playing with a very angry dungeon master. So they added some baffling concepts to the design of the game.
Aww. I really liked Engage. It wasn't the best game ever or anything, but I enjoyed my time with it. I enjoyed Fates as well, but I agree that it was an inferior game.
@cisco1655 Radiant Dawn expanded upon the series. Path of radiance was also good, but I liked Radiant Dawn because it maxed out Ike's powers and the duel between him and the black knight was epic. Not to mention you had to strategize every move and you got to play both sides.

We notice left ones because it's a constant bombardment, pretending it's 50/50 when it's dang near 100/0 or at least 99/1 is plain disingenuous, honestly.
There are plenty of games that endorse religion and the government being tied together, which is a right wing view. A lot of right wing politics just don't fit in a fantasy setting. (Gun ownership, corporate rights) . Though things shift with monsters in the world, many modern settings are pro gun ownership.
@@AdamantiumDeposit That's not a right-wing view, especially not historically speaking, and even if it was it would depend on the religion in question. And depicting something isn't necessarily advocacy for said thing; in fact, often JRPGs famously offer critical commentary of religion. As for corporate rights, that's not really a right-wing thing. Whenever we complain about censorship we're snarkily met by the left-wing rebuttal, "it's a private company and can do what it wants". Also, it would be easy to include right-wing themes, like the right to life, defending traditional values, and nationalism. If these are portrayed its usually not in a way which suggests an actual right-wing interpretation of them.
Engage isn't amazing but he seriously underrated it. Its way better than Fates by virtue of its gameplay alone. And I think its story and characters are... slightly better than Fates.
I agree with most of these rankings. Engage's core problem is the weak plot and lame characters. If you pair it up to the older ones it doesn't seem so bad, but you have to consider when it came out. Fates is maybe arguably worse. I felt embarrassed playing both. Not included since it is a spinoff but the first Warriors has the same cringe dialogue and a terrible protagonist. (The brother anyway) The only changes I'd make is score 3 Houses slightly higher and Shadow Dragon slightly lower.
@@amaurymm1433 I'm played all 17 games and Fates is my second least favorite haha But it's a far better "tactical rpg" than Awakening. Difficulties are more balanced and make more sense, duo aren't cheat anymore (playing awakening could basically be put your best duo in the middle and skip turn) and the level design is probably the biggest improvement. It's not amazing but Awakening has the worst of all the franchise (even echoes) so it was easy but still. Absolutely everything is better gameplay wise (classes&weapons are more balanced too). Then you have story, supports and characters they both have my least favorite of the franchise but I do think Awakening has a better story (also than Engage story, but I prefer Engage characters) but story never was FE strong point so in the end it not enough to beat Fates. At least Fates make sense as a tactical. I do understand how people can prefer Awakening but most of them would be more traditional jrpg lovers than tacticals enjoyers imho !
Engage is amazing. It has some of the best maps and gameplay in the series easily. Also, the story is good and saying it's "cringe and bad" without any reasoning isn't an argument. Hortensia is also a very well written character. I can't take your FE opinions seriously if you put Engage last.
Hortensia îs a very bad character. 95% of her supports are "look how cute I am, cute cute cute". And no, her having 2 supports where she explain that it's becuase of her mother that she acts like that doesn't make The rest of her awful supports better. Hortensia îs not a good character, not at all, and The story îs very bad. Lusten, I get it, you praise engage, but no, The story and especially hortensia îs not good.
Like i can't Take you seriously when you say hortensia îs a good written character. Yes she missess her mother, and that's why she Wants to be cute, she has a reason, but that doesn't excuse that 98% of her supports are "look how cuuuuute i aaaaaam". That îs not good writing, and most characters suffer of that. Look at diamant, hot guy but just a generic one dimensional lord "I must protect my homelabd and I love training, I am so deep". And how îs The story of engage good? I can't Take you seriously when you praise bad story and characters.
@@dinar8749 umm dude, The Graphics of engage and The animations are way better than three houses, I think you meant the animation style. Cuz three houses has some of the worst Graphics on the switch. Also The Map design îs one of The most important aspects of fire emblem, dude you make me laugh with your skill issue takes.
The issue is that some of his criticisms are just stuff grifters spout on the internet. Like for example calling Engage modern politics. Even though games like path of radiance with its concepts of racism.
most of the people I see talking about fire emblem quality tend focus more on gameplay quality over story and "vibes" so it's interesting to see the different perspective. I definitely rank games like Engage and Binding Blade a little higher than you do since I like the gameplay and Three Houses lower, I also don't really understand your distaste for "slice of life" dialogue, but your opinions seem fair to me.
I love how SoV gets lots of love even if it was not best sale. Also Fates gets the hate it deserves😅 Anyway I agree with people who believe Engage should be better placed, I mean yes it has problems but is also one of the best in gameplay, animations and has some good characters and supports. I actually remember more supports from it than awakening. Also the gameplay is correlated with story really well in a spoiler chapter.
Three houses was the first fire emblem I played, and enjoyed it a lot to make me play the older ones too..... then came what ever engage was suppose to be. Is the first time i got into a new franchise only to see it take such a nose dive.
They are both far better wtf. It's not even close like RD jas probably the second best level design when Awakening has by far the worst of all the franchise. Also the worst difficulty settings. 3 or 4th Worst story and cast . All those games are far superior. As a tactical game Awakening is probably the worst I've played tbh
I hear mix things about engage but the one common complaint has to do with the localization hopefully Nintendo learned their lesson with localizations, but at the same time i get things that make sense or jokes that hit in Japan will not hit the same in the west its unfortunately the nature if the beast look at shows like Crayon Shinchan its considered one of the highest rated shows in Japan but when it was localized well the jokes didn't really hit as alot of the jokes had to to do with current events, culture and politics in Japan at the time an episode is writen so of course in Japan yeah its funny but here well its hard to relatewhile i do agree some localizers take a little too much liberties for the most part they have to find a way to connect with Western fans. As for yhe Slice of life bit that Eric doesnt seem to like you can pretty much blame Persona 3 and on for that, it was the trend at the time that everyone was following.
Engage is the worst game I have ever played. After playing it I went from a Fire Emblem super fan to someome who is now cautious when a new game will be announced. Everyone in this comments section can write a better story and create better characters than this game offers. Thats not an opinion thats a fact.
Okay but has someone you pretty much enjoy every fire emblem games, I honestly thing there is nothing wrong With the Engage design they went for, I odnt even think we can call it ugly, heck i love 3H and i do belive its superior to Engage but this game had even more Uglier 3RD and akward character animation in dialogue that i didnt really saw in Engage , its basically just modern anime style which was kinda always the case for the franshise and I honestly love the Colorfull and saturated design cause it just gives more vibe and personnality to the characters Kinda like the GBA Games were even tho on paper these character are a bit more bland has some of them arent important to the story i still cared about those character because of their stand out design, and i had the oposite issue with awakening where even tho i got used to the character at first the low staturation Didint make thse character stand out to me ( esepcially the early game character and child units ), Also another defense of Engage ,Fire emblem having a bad story is basically half of the franshise, heck id say its still better than both 3 fates and Blinding blade story, Two games i still prefer over Engage, To me the main issue with Engage is similar to 3H where the base management is completly useless, and even tho In 3H i though those critiques were a bit overexagerated in the case of Engage...I 100% Agree, its the most useless thing ive ever seen on a fire emblem game and i feels so bad for the people who were creating it ,you literatly can beat the game without once going to the base and its not like Fates or 3H where the base can make you unlock new characters,
I'm sorry bro, Engage is not as much of a disgrace as Awakening map design and you said it was good ? It's the worst level design of the franchise by far even counting echoes. Engage has an horrible story I do agree but as a tactical it's probably a top 3 to 7 FE out of the 17. Which made it a better game thn some others
Engage is definitely the worst Fire Emblem, objectively, but I dislike Awakening more because of the trends it set. The art became generic, story bad, and an increased focus on relationships. But it's a masterpiece compared to woke Engage at least... Path of Radiance is best!
@@johnbazan8674 Oh, I don't know, the fact the localization goes out of its way to be as gender neutral as possible at all times? That it changes when girls are referred to as pretty, or any other traditionally stereotypically gender exclusive terminology? It's about as far gone as it can possibly go.
@@Vulpas seriously, you sound like a English teacher. The only thing that I could say is woke in this game. Is the character Rosado. Would say three houses is woke for having a gay option.
@@johnbazan8674 You mean "an English teacher", not "a English teacher", but anyway, it's not even about grammar per se. It's about intent, the reason it was written gender neutrally is for ideological purposes. I didn't know about 3 Houses because I barely played it, but that sounds bad. Sure was great having normal characters in the old school Fire Emblems...
@@Vulpas seriously do you just follow what grifters say in the internet. Three houses allows going gay for certain characters and this is the first you heard of that. If we’re gonna be consistent, the GameCube games had political themes tackling racism which today is considered woke propaganda by the right. But you haven’t heard a peep about the old games being considered woke. It just seems to me you don’t have your own opinion about the game but rather follow what others say.
I completely disagree with your opinion on Engage. I think it has the BEST game play in the series. True, the story isn't that good, but it's cool to have all the characters from the previous games.
Eric, this is for sure the WORST rating of Fire Emblem games ever. How can you be this off? I can tell you're not a Fire Emblem fan and don't understand what a good Fire Emblem game is. We'll forgive you though. You should've included all(!) games, even the original ones. Still it was fun to watch. Sacred Stones is my favourite, but for sure not as good, nor as hard as you make it look like. It's one of the easiest games to be honest.

@@Haggis-Giggles4692 it sure would benefit a lot from some design changes. Random enemy reinforcement that would destroy you after you are already 3-4hrs in a single stage could be really annoying. However, the new gameplay mechanics and story were ahead of its time. GBA FEs while solid, they only feel more of the same, which isn’t a bad thing, but the 3 games reused a lot of ideas (mechanics, character design and story) from older title. They almost feel like remakes to me, where as FE1-5 feel more like sequels.

Not anymore. Pre-Awakening, yes.

Even older pre-awakening games had major issues balancing both great story and great gameplay.
Sacred Stones:
There is absolutely no way you've played every Fire Emblem game and came out saying that Fates' gameplay is "nothing great."
That is pure insanity. Fates: Conquest has some of THE BEST gameplay and map design in the entire series! 🤦🏻
Yes Conquest does, however Birthright and Revelation have some of the worst so it ends up evening out to meh.
Yeah Conquest is solid, Revelation is hot trash and Birthright is "just ok".
@@hanzou1238

It still has the incredible reclassing and pair uo mechanics, just in more straightforward.
Seeing as BR was designed to be on the 'easy' side, I think it does its job well.
@@hanzou1238 Birthright is simply Conquest for casual players.
That's why the maps are more basic. The gameplay is still solid, it's just... easy.
Revelation is the same, except far more experimental. It's very gimmicky.

I'm glad you stand your own ground when it comes to your opinions. Don't crowdsource your own beliefs
Glad to see both sacred stones and blazing blade so high. Personally I would put blazing blade first, sacred stone second and Path of radiance third since these were the ones I played back in the day
But pretty good rank anyway
Respect for putting engage last.
Holy shit a list that put Engage and Fates in their place, i did not expect this
Erick's comments on Engage and Fates really broke my heart...
The designs for Engage are cringe too, especially the main character.
Fates is one of my favorites
I hate engage with a burning passion. Conquest's gameplay also felt the exact same as all the other fire emblems.
@@dinar8749 I hate it too, but I don't understand how Conquest's gameplay can feel similar to other games

I agree with your number one, that game have the best story and the best main character in my opinion.
Very disappointing to hear engage not getting the respect it deserves
Wouldn't call it the worst game in the series, but I can understand. I will forever remember how the first trailer felt worst than getting friendzoned a few weeks later.
Engage is even worse than Fire Emblem Heroes.
Fire emblem sucks anyways
@@Vulpas That's a crazy statement.
How is Engage worse than the game that literally drains your money?
@@eyesofdeathperception6730 I never spent a cent on FEH.
I mean shadow dragon based on og for example some of the guys are recruited only because they wanna date Marths girl which funny enough is what these fans also hate about later games which is irony
I never really played Leif's game but they did have to do a lot of work making stuff up for Leif to get a bad guy as he can't defeat seliphs foes which was a messy storyline to do in a sidequel
@@eyesofdeathperception6730
The cast are basically the same in 3h. Lenato red brother and black knight all need different routes to understand which is a problem as all the main stories are the same
even with the teleport system running around 3houses basically takes a massive sludge hammer to the pace of the game.

Really? Engage is the worst? C'mon dude!
Yes, engage is the worst.

The FE purists always act like the older FE characters were complex and unique, most of them looked generic as they come and their personalities were one note and tropey as hell
Hearing how they "animified" and "weeaboofied" FE lol, FE was always anime

Engage the worst and right after the recent trilogy?? If one has never played FEmblem I might have agreed.
My favorites are Awakening, Conquest, The sacred stones and Engage.

2. Sacred Stones
3. Blazing Blade
4. Genealogy of Holy War

Awakening - cool but not my favorite
FE GBA (blazing blade?) - enjoyed but only did Lyn's Chapters
3 Houses (Empire route) - Enjoyed the story, but battle maps felt lacking
Shadows of Valentia - My favorite so far, though I rage quit during Duma's tower
Happy to see PoR as number 1. It was also my first FE and I still think it's the best one.
It's biggest flaw is the slow animations but that can be fixed with emulation.

The best review of three houses , literally killed it with the words
Berwick Saga is one of the greatests games, i consider it part of the series.
13:04 that sounds less like a localization 'error' and more like a slight on the intelligence of westerners.
Man, I love FE7. Lyndis is the best.
Great list! However I freaking love Engage. I know im in the minority but it reminded me of Fates, which i also love lmao. And no, im not trolling. Fates, awakening and engage are my top 3 😶🌫️
My own ranking from worst to best would be:
-Awakening
-Fates (BR=>Rev=>CQ, although they have different good points)
-Blazing Sword
-Engage (I could call it the worst game in the series, but settings feelings aside and accepting that cringe is subjective, I can't)
-New Mystery of the Emblem
-Shadow Dragon
-Binding Blade
-Radiant Dawn
-Three Houses
-Echoes
-Sacred Stones
-Genealogy
-Mystery of the Emblem
-Path of Radiance
-Thracia
Seriously, I can't help but think you missed something with Thracia because the game gives so much tools that many map are trivial or easy to trivialized, and those that are nore are easy are made to force you to use those tools (staffs and scroll stacking comes at the top of my mind)
Still think that none of those games are without interest (except maybe awekening)and that nothing past Engage would be below a 10/20 if I had to rate the games (unsure for BS though). I haven't ranked the ness games because I haven't played them.
If someone wan't me to explain some of those rankings, I'll gladly do it.
Awakening as the worst!?!? Wtf??????
Awakening isnt great but I've definitely played worse lol
I'd like to know why Mystery of the Emblem is so high for you.
It's the only game in the franchise that totally don't understand how an FE game work, what is the tactical rpg genre et how to make a map.
It's so fucking bad that even difficulties doesn't even make sense.
And story wise it's bad too the only good thing is those amazing musics
ok why is shadow dragon so high
The problem with Engage’s story and characters is that it’s…. Lame.
And you don't need savestates for playing them except on FE5 imo.
I've played FE7 to 9 at elementary school and I finished them it's not like it's impossible in easy mode
@@Haarwyvern have you ever played Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle? That is a turned based strategy game also. That game didn’t have permadeath but it was still hard. Once all the characters die it’s game over. That’s the challenge I prefer, not being pressured to play it perfectly.
@@dinsmeteorite5068 Yeah but you also can continue old FE Games without one unit you know that makes it even more memorable even though you're sad.
No I don't know your game but I've also played some interesting games with no permadeath.
I was mostly referring at the fact that old FE were well design to suit this aspect and that makes it interesting. I do understand like it it less but it's one it does that makes the franchise like this.
As a child I don't think I would have fall in love the same way without permadeath.
That was actually the first thing I mentioned when explaining what FE was to people haha
They need to make a remake to Binding Blade and make Roy's personality match that of his trophy description in Melee
Nah, Engage has the worst art and story, gameplay is fine but like most post-Awakening Fire Emblems focuses too much on relationships.
Engage deserves to be last.
Playing Unicorn Overlord has made me realize how awful FE has gotten. I don't think Ive enjoyed one as much as UO since Valentia.
Well what we do probably agree on it’s the GOAT of the genre as far as the series itself.. I quite like its competitors too however like Valkyria Chronicles & some of those standalones like Jeanne DArc, Triangle Strategy and most recently Unicorn Overlord
I agree 💯
I like Devil Survivor the best.
Valkyria Chronicles, Jeanne D'Arc, SMT Devil Survivor, Triangle Strategy, Tactic Ogre, FF Tactics, Disgaea, Unicorn Overlord > Fire Emblem.
The worst: FE Engage, FE: Three Houses, FE: Fates, Tokyo Mirrage Sessions (if counts this game as a FE/SMT spin-off)
The best: FE: Path of Radiance / Radiant Dawn, FE: Sacred Stones, FE: Awakening, FE: Genealogy of War.
Fire Emblem Three Houses is an Absolute MasterPiece and it’s in my Top 10 VideoGames of All Time
Agreed. It's pretty underrated these days with engage defenders dismissing it as "bad gameplay and bad story".
I wouldn't call it master piece but it's close.
Overrated. The story îs a mess and The gameplay is mediocre. Masterpiece huh? No
@mihaimercenarul7467 that's a take alright but I got to ask why do you think that? Why do you think story is a mess and the gameplay is mediocre?
Byleth îs a very Boring character that everyone praises to give the player a feel good moment every time they scratch their butts. Don't even get me started how garbage the slitherins were as antagonists.
I hated Engage, too.
Th Sacred Stones might be my favourite game in the series.
genealogy is the best
If it had GBA graphics. It would be best by far.
Best story. Would be best with gba gameplay
Ranking the ones I've played:
1. Shadows of Valentia
2. Three Houses
3. Awakening
4. The Blazing Blade
Blazing Blade is a good game, but I hate when TRPGs don't let you grind your units between main story battles, and it's the reason I've never beat it.
Shadows of Valentia had a beautiful art design and OST. The way the story is done is beautiful.
In my opinion your list is much better than Eric's. He's guided by nostalgia. I mean a diehard jrpg fan whose favorite games are Tales of Legendia and Eternal Poison?
If disagree, games that don't have grinding are better. You are just bad at The game and want to grind to correct that mistake.
@@ivangasparevic1727kiddo this guy complains about no grinding lmao.
A game that dont let you grind is way better as it force you to learn the mechanics instead of just overleveling everything

Not a dig on you though, keep going on! I like your videos!

oof maybe I just don't have enough Fire Emblem experience, but I put well over 100 hours into Engage and had a great time with the game. Yeah story was meh, but I really didn't have a huge issue with the character design either. Pretty strong take on Engage but overall I look at it as just as enjoyable as three houses in many ways.

Reading these comments makes me realize how toxic the fanbase is.
What a video is, so is the reaction to it.
Surprised 3 houses are so high. The story was interesting, but all that pointless monastery crap was so annoying I had to drop the game.
You’re Tripping Fool
Also because of Calendar system and Dating Sim filers story pacing is abysmal.
Aww. I really liked Engage. It wasn't the best game ever or anything, but I enjoyed my time with it. I enjoyed Fates as well, but I agree that it was an inferior game.
Eric: "The snes games are too hard"

i have to respectfully disagree, radiant dawn is a dissapointment coming from por the story is a complete downgrade from por@@kevinburke1325
@cisco1655 Radiant Dawn expanded upon the series. Path of radiance was also good, but I liked Radiant Dawn because it maxed out Ike's powers and the duel between him and the black knight was epic. Not to mention you had to strategize every move and you got to play both sides.

I strongly disliked Engage's story, but I don't remember anything overtly political about it. Everything made sense within the context of the game world, even if I thought it was cringe and dumb. I know there were some poorly edited/changed support translations, but it's not like the theme of the game was a subtext for or endirsed real world left or right wing politics. Combat, voice acting, and animations were great, everything else was not great. Even with how much I dislike it its hard for me to say it's the worst.
There's never been a mainstream game to endorse right wing politics, it's annoying when someone say "this doesn't endorse left or right" when we all know it only ever goes one way.
@@Vulpas People mostly notice politics they don't agree with. This is why most left wing people believe most games endorse right wing politics, and most right wing people believe most games endorse left wing politics.
"The game is just saying normal things" is the reaction when it endorse your view, so it's not visible.
@@tombeauvais7025 Lol no, nobody actually thinks games endorse right wing views because it isn't a reasonable conclusion to make about virtually any games.
The remake of the first fire emblem and both fates games are easily the worst.
Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance come afterwards.
I just bought Engage. Thanks for the recommendation.

(The brother anyway)

But it's a far better "tactical rpg" than Awakening.
Also saying that hortensia and The stiry are good without explaining how doesn't help your argument.
Engage is shit. Map design is not nearly as important as to make up for a terrible story, graphics, music, etc....

most of the people I see talking about fire emblem quality tend focus more on gameplay quality over story and "vibes" so it's interesting to see the different perspective.
Okay but has someone you pretty much enjoy every fire emblem games, I honestly thing there is nothing wrong With the Engage design they went for, I odnt even think we can call it ugly, heck i love 3H and i do belive its superior to Engage but this game had even more Uglier 3RD and akward character animation in dialogue that i didnt really saw in Engage , its basically just modern anime style which was kinda always the case for the franshise and I honestly love the Colorfull and saturated design cause it just gives more vibe and personnality to the characters Kinda like the GBA Games were even tho on paper these character are a bit more bland has some of them arent important to the story i still cared about those character because of their stand out design, and i had the oposite issue with awakening where even tho i got used to the character at first the low staturation Didint make thse character stand out to me ( esepcially the early game character and child units ), Also another defense of Engage ,Fire emblem having a bad story is basically half of the franshise, heck id say its still better than both 3 fates and Blinding blade story, Two games i still prefer over Engage,
To me the main issue with Engage is similar to 3H where the base management is completly useless, and even tho In 3H i though those critiques were a bit overexagerated in the case of Engage...I 100% Agree, its the most useless thing ive ever seen on a fire emblem game and i feels so bad for the people who were creating it ,you literatly can beat the game without once going to the base and its not like Fates or 3H where the base can make you unlock new characters,
Modern Political Garbage? What does that mean, what's in the game?

Eric, this is for sure the WORST rating of Fire Emblem games ever. How can you be this off? I can tell you're not a Fire Emblem fan and don't understand what a good Fire Emblem game is. We'll forgive you though. You should've included all(!) games, even the original ones. Still it was fun to watch. Sacred Stones is my favourite, but for sure not as good, nor as hard as you make it look like. It's one of the easiest games to be honest.
… if you are a fire emblem fan, you need to say all the games are terrible. That’s a true FE fan 😆
His top 3 are factual, and his worst was true too.
PoR is #1, Engage's easily last, below even spinoffs.
Engage and Conquest are extremely overrated.
1:30 it's freaking horrible!!!
Man!! Three House is so good! 🇧🇷
Meh
Modern political garbage? Chill out brother 😂 Engage was good imo and the story was fine 🤷
Tell the localizers, brother.
@@Vulpas I have nothing to tell them as I have no issues 😂 each to their own though
@@marcrics So people who don't like the insertion of modern politics should "chill out" but not the localizers that include the politics, got it. We call that a textbook definition of bias.
@@marcrics Why not tell them chill...? Hm... 🤔
@@MemerMann-ur3kc I think what I'm saying more so is what exactly do you mean by modern politics? Seems a large blanket statement is all 🤷
Genealogy my fav follow by Gaiden/Echoes then Mystery of Emblem(SFC). But even the worst FE is fine.
If they had gba gameplay, those would be best with their best stories
@@Haggis-Giggles4692 it sure would benefit a lot from some design changes. Random enemy reinforcement that would destroy you after you are already 3-4hrs in a single stage could be really annoying. However, the new gameplay mechanics and story were ahead of its time.
GBA FEs while solid, they only feel more of the same, which isn’t a bad thing, but the 3 games reused a lot of ideas (mechanics, character design and story) from older title. They almost feel like remakes to me, where as FE1-5 feel more like sequels.
I agree that Engage was pretty bad, but after that, this list just seems...random...
aint no way thracia is 3rd worst game
It is, even worse than the spinoffs.
I've never had more fun in late game fire emblem than Thracia. Using a bunch of staves is so fun.
