- Onkyo TX-RZ50 7.1.4 AV Receiver Review - Part 1 Initial Setup. For this review we bring in the popular Onkyo TX-RZ50 AV Receiver to our theater for evaluation. The video talks about the first Onkyo AV Receiver, the unboxes this AV Receiver, TX-SV7M from 1987-89, then unboxes the TX-RZ50 released 2021. We hook up this receiver to our 11 external amplifiers for a 7.2.4 configuration (albeit two subwoofers in connected in parallel - really 7.1.4). We go through the entire initial setup wizard including a brief overview of the Dirac calibration. We end by confirming Apple TV playback of Dolby Surround and Atmos content.
Question: What is Onkyo's Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC)?

I absolutely love this unit. Bought mine for $1299.00 ÷ tax. I honestly do not care about Auro 3D - but lets be real - Onkyo was first out of the gate with 2.1 HDMI that worked out of the box - not like Yamaha, which I returned or Denon that didn't function either. And no other manufacturer gave Dirac Live pre installed.
By far the best bang for your buck AVR on the market today.
I got mine on Black Friday for 1799CAD couldn't be happier with it. I too did not care about auro3D. Honestly seems like a waste of a channel. I have 4 in-ceiling speakers and putting another right above my head just seems pointless. By far the best avr I've ever owned
Yes - one of the highest value AV Receivers out there with Dirac included and full HDMI 2.1 support for all inputs/outputs. -Jon
Me too!
mine has been in the repair shop 2 times in one year. not good onkyo....
@@michael-4k4000 What's the issues if I may ask?
Just beginning set up on the RZ50 this week, super helpful. Thank you!
So glad the content helped you set up your new RZ50. Let me know what you think of the Onkyo. -Jon
Just got this receiver. Your videos are top notch. Thank you
Nice! I think you will enjoy it. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for the compliment. -Jon
I enjoyed the video very much, most informative out there on youtube. Please keep up the good work 5 out of 5😊
I’ll aim for 6 out of 5 next time. Too kind. -Jon
I was worried about getting an RZ50 so i bought from crutchfield where i have a 60 day return window. Despite all the people reporting issues my RZ50 literally works perfect. I havent had a single problem. Its a great unit in my experience.
Thinking of getting this, and your video was very in depth. Thanks 👍🏼
So glad the video was helpful. I was pleased with the RZ50 - the price makes in compelling. -Jon
I like the picture in picture for menu showcase .. That's a great touch. =)
Thanks - results of taking a video of the screen of often not good when I try. A USB capture device from Amazon for under $20 made a big difference in the clarity. -Jon
Best unboxing and set up step with details I ever seen in a Home Theater Relative Channel .Pro : have Dirac ready to use /Con : no individual preouts . the menu look the same as the Pioneer LX Elite series .
Mauricio - Thanks for the kind feedback and sharing that the Pioneer menus match. That helps to confirm there is a high level of technology shared between these brands. -Jon
Real talk, your voice is soothing to listen to. Would listen to an ASMR video of you talking about these details if you ever did.
Too kind. I didn't realize I had that type of tone. I hope I am not putting this audience to sleep. Just kidding - I suspect you meant that as a positive comment. Glad you are tuning in. -Jon
Totally positive. You're extremely articulate to describe the specifics very well with easy to follow directions. Just another perk.@@ripewave
Great walk down AV memory lane from the late 80’s Jon. My first receiver was a Harman Kardon and my brother had an Onkyo Integra. I enjoyed my HK but switched to an Onkyo Integra AV receiver after I saw that motorized volume control knob with the red light and fell in love. Those Onkyo’s were beasts back then. Still have a few in my attic.
Thanks for the review.
Glad you enjoyed that sidebar discussion. Yes - ours has the motorized volume knob as well and is still in service. My mom uses for her dinning room Epicure speakers. Onkyo Integra was positioned a bit different in those days. -Jon
Ha! Motorized! That reminded me of Aiwa stereo/Dolby Surround system. :) I miss those motorized volume knobs. You turn up that volume on your remote and you force the volume knob by turning the knob down by hand. Same thing for reverse. Good times. :)
Excellent, detailed look. Cant wait for part 2. Hope in the future you can compare this to one of the ES Sony new receivers that have new 360 calibration that many say make it best sounding home theater receiver out today. Thanks for your work.
I totally agree… the only other AVR on my short list is the Sony ES5000. I’m leaning towards the RZ50 but would love to see a head to head.
I aim to bring in a new Sony AVR - either 5000 or 7000. I am leaning towards the 5000 as I would rather present their more accessible model. Not sure I will have at the same time as the Onkyo unit, but that would be ideal. -Jon
@@ripewave Cant wait. Thanks
I love the new rz70 but being more than double the price of the rz50 it’s a hard pill to swallow and I’m very happy with my rz50 it’s very powerful and also listening to 2 channel music it is great as well
I calibrated using a UMIK-1 microphone and DIRAC today and the RZ50 sounded a little between then my $2,500 Marantz Cinema 50 (also DIRAC with UMIK-1). Certainly a great value. I am using the same external amps and speakers for both and compared multi-channel, stereo or direct modes. -Jon
With the price difference but yourself an external amplifier (fonewinner 7300 let's say and you have so much more power it's not EVEN comparable.)
Thanks for the good video. The RZ50 is currently $1,000. Looks like they're trying to clear them out. I picked one up a few weeks ago.
The price just keeps getting more enticing. -Jon
Got mine in early February and paid $1199 new.
Immediately got a receiver fan for it and it stays cool to my liking. Currently running Accu EQ and learning how to run Dirac. A few noise issues and hope to get it ironed out!
Couldn’t be happier with this beast!
Can you direct me to where you bought your receiver fan? I've got an RZ50 and it is an oven! TY.

@mm2024-7 Thank you so much for your reply ❤️!
Great descriptive review. I noticed in the speaker setup you didn’t mention if this system supports a bi-amp capability for a 5.1 system.
Thanks, Chris
No, I haven’t touched upon bi-amp capabilities of any AV Receiver I have reviewed to date. I sound because there is a use case for it, but I only recommend for those who have an tar amp available. If you are starting with nothing, I feel it is better to have one amplifier with a lot of headroom then to bi-amp. But if you have a 75W amp and you feel the bass is lacking, then you could by a 125W amp for the bass with spending too much. However if you can buy a 200W amp for the same money or less then a 75W+125W amp, go with one 200W amp. -Jon
I really want the Denon X3800, but this beast is down to 999.00 everywhere, might have to pull the trigger.
Seems like Onkyo and Denon are matching prices - healthy competition as they say. Thanks for sharing. -Jon
Hi, folks! This is to address some of the various comments/questions above:
I’m on my second unit within a few months. The first one had multiple issues - OSD not displaying (“Please Wait….”); HDMI failures; sound loss and distortion; problems switching to and from PS5; WiFi disconnect; Dirac settings not saving; POOR CENTER CHANNEL DIALOGUE AND SEPARATION; etc. I tried running two different amps to the RS’s to get 7.1.4 - got speaker hum both times. The second unit has performed a little bit better, but I’ve still had occasional HDMI issues like the ones listed above, and I’m still unable to run an amp without the humming. I can’t help but wonder if this sale (price cut) is a result of consumers finally realizing that this receiver is not holding up to be the wonderful product that everyone initially thought. I can’t say it doesn’t have it’s moments of cinema bliss, but I’ve spent more time fiddling with and unplugging it then I have enjoying it. The Dirac app is finicky garbage, so don’t let that be a selling point for you. And in all fairness, I have this hooked up to a Sony x90j and can’t help but think that is part of the issue (because we all know that Sony is, well….Sony). Bottom line, I would not recommend purchasing this receiver - there are much better options out there. I would love to hear if anyone is experiencing the same and if you have any suggestions/solutions. Cheers, everyone!
Thank you for the video - look forward to more!
Thanks for the warning. So far with my in house assessments I yet to find the perfect AV Receiver - but will keep trying. Each seems to have its own quirks, defects and deficiencies. What we have to determine are which models are the most tolerable unfortunately. Even my Marantz Cinema 50, with the least issues, has issues. I am getting a 60hz hum when my cable box is connected. It is the only AV Receive or Processor that I am experiencing that issue with. It is tolerable because cable is my lease favorite source - but necessary for Super Bowl and other big events.
I am testing out the Onkyo TX-RZ50 this weekend. So far so good, but you have my attention and I will look for similar problems.
I suspect that these pre-VOX acquisition models suffer from inconsistent manufacturing, with a lemon shipping out occasionally. I feel Anthem is similar as some owners have no complaints while others share my pain.
As I have used DIRAC now with Emotiva, Marantz, MiniDSP and now Onkyo with good results your negative experience with DIRAC may be more related to the Onkyo receiver than the DIRAC calibration- but that is just a guess.
I can only assume that you have gone through hours of troubleshooting by yourself and with Onkyo and I must believe your issues are real. I am very sympathetic with your situation. How consistent these issues are with other instances of the same model would be good to know.
I will share with this audience any trouble I am experiencing.
Best of luck resolving. Keep us posted. -Jon
@@ripewave Thanks so much for the quick reply, Jon. I should clarify a couple things: I am using the Dirac feature on the Onkyo app - I’m certain the PC version gives better results; my speakers are the Polk ES line - not the best, certainly not the worst (could that explain the center channel dialogue??); viewing/listening space is an open area living room in an apartment (sorry, not sorry downstairs neighbor. Lol). In terms of the amp issue, everything short of pulling the wires out of the wall and replacing the fuse box has been tried. I’m new to external amps, so I can’t help but wonder if the input voltage on the amp needs to match (or be greater than) the output voltage of the Onkyo? Does the amp class have to match (Onkyo is A/B)? I have the extra speakers, stands, and wires, so I’m not quite willing to give up just yet. Thanks, brother! Cheers!
First thanks for pointing out the Onkyo mobile app. Afterwards I read the manual to learn that my approach of using the full DIRAC PC application was not the default nor even discussed within the Onkyo documentation- they are pushing their customers to the mobile app. I have since downloaded and will compare results.
The amplifier class does not have to match. Each amplifier will have its own sound signature and the amplifier class has something to do with it. I believe your room acoustics and speakers play the biggest role in the calibration and Latinate sound quality. However, I have proven that even with the same amps and speakers the output can sound different with the receiver used and how it is calibrated. -Jon
Take a look at your response curves DIRAC generates for each speaker. Do any perform significantly worse then the offers? Particularly inspect the center speaker. If it’s response curve show major issues, then you will struggle with dialog. -Jon
The current price from Amazon is $999 which to me is the best bang for my buck!
Yes it is! -Jon
Definitely looking forward to part 2. Would like to see how close it is to the others in quality of sound.
Thanks 😀
Starting the sound quality review today. Thanks for tuning in. -Jon
I am looking at this really closely now. I am considering other candidates. I am dubious again with the internal amplifier stages, but I would use the pre outs anyway. So that is moot anyway. Thanks for your videos.
Thanks for the heads up on the internal amplifier stages. What other candidates are your considering? -Jon
yeah thank you for your job
You're welcome
Looking at these comments have me very concerned about the receiver I received. I just cant give it the praise that I am seeing others give this receiver. Which makes me feel like I have a malfunction. I came from a tx-nr818, and it blows this receiver out the water when I comes to power and sound. This cant be right. The RZ50 makes my speakers sound like they are out of phase. I feels like the low end of the frequencies are missing. Extremely hallow. But from what im reading, this cant be normal. I truly was confused on how a new receiver sounds worse than a 10 year old one. has anyone heard of this?
Derrick- sorry to hear that your RZ50 has been underperforming. Comments I am reading suggest that production is inconsistent some have no issues while others complain of sound quality or worse. At least one report of a gum being generated when using external amplifiers. I only receive a hum when the RZ50 is powered down. Once powered up the hum goes away so I leave it on. I wonder if those with worse issues purchased around the same time - maybe one of the earlier serial numbers when ownership always still in transition. Let’s see if others report in. -Jon
Hey great video. I own this avr and i love it. My current setup is 5.2.4 and i plan on going to 7.2.4 soon. I will probably go with an Emotiva BasX A4 and power the 4 surrounds with it. Your video is the first one ive seen where an external amp is used with this avr but ive heard a couple horror stories about getting speaker buzz/hum after adding an amp to this avr. Could you please let us know if you are still getting clean sound? Ive been doing my homework and this is basically the only worry i have, i would have to order the Emotiva internationally and pay big shipping fees, which is fine, as long as i know I'd be getting clean sound. Thanks and looking forward to your next video on this avr.
I appreciate the details you shared of your own experience with the TX-RZ50. So far no buzz/hum during operation. However, if I leave my Emotiva amps on and power down the Onkyo, I may get a hum through the speakers. If I power the TX-RZ50 back on, the hum goes away immediately. Working on Part 2 this weekend and will not if any hum occurs during operation. -Jon
I think the latest version of dirac (3.5.2 is glitched. It was not allowing filter uploads for me at the end of calibration. It would suck for you to do a full calibration with a 7.1.4 setup just to glitch out).
Users on AVS forums recommended to downgrade to dirac 3.4.4. The patch notes for dirac 3.5.2 also mentions this filter upload issue.
Just a heads up.
I am running 3.4.4, so that explains why didn't have the filter issue. I see that that versions 3.5.1, 3.5.2 and 3.62 are available as BETA, and not fully released. However, the release notes for 3.6.2 state the following:
Fixes
- Cannot export Dirac Live Room Correction filters to some Onkyo/Pioneer/Integra devices.
- Cannot export filters to some NAD devices.
- Autosave projects does not work (reported on some Arcam and miniDSP devices).
- Cannot load target curve.
Known Problems
- Filter export fails on Primare SPA 25
- Filter export takes about 2 minutes longer than previously on Onkyo/Pioneer/Integra devices, but it completes eventually, so please have some extra patience.

Does the RZ50 have full multichannel Dirac? Not just stereo plus subwoofer? That would be a great value!
I just ordered mine from Crutchfield for $1019.
That’s the lowest I have heard - amazing deal! - Jon
I have this receiver and I think it sounds great. I didn't see it giving you any options for setting the crossover frequencies for the speakers.
What I went through was the initial setup wizard. I am starting part 2 today. I believe they have a setting for crossover frequencies. It should be the same menu where you can select a pre-defined crossover point if you own select Klipsch speaker models. -Jon
Why the custom equalizer don’t change the sound ?!
I've only heard good things about this receiver. I can get it for $1240 today. But I can also get the Marantz SR7015 for $1499. Paired with a 2 channel amp I'll still save $750 to $1000 over a true 11 channel receiver. I'm leaning toward the Marantz, but $259 is $259. If the Marantz didn't just go on sale, I'd probably buy the Onkyo for sure. Decisions, decisions.
Go with the feature set up want and your gut feeling. What did you decide? -Jon
What can I do to reset the menus?, by the way with your configuration guide I have helped myself a lot because you are showing the screens, congratulations, excellent work, I hope you can help me, thank you very much.
Thank you for pointing out Pioneer had Dolby surround sound. I was lucky enough to have one with two twelve inch woofers. Hey it sounded pretty good paired with the new DVD 📀 format. 👍
It is fun to reflect back on prior generations. -Jon
Back in the day Onkyo had some association with Rotel I believe. My 1979 Rotel RX2002 receiver has some boards in it with Onkyo printed on them. I don't believe the receiver was molested much over the years, so perhaps Onkyo was part supplier?
Nice investigation work. Certainly boards with Onkyo printed on them point to Onkyo being a supplier for Rotel. I learned something new - thanks. -Jon
How about if I have a phono preamp for a moving coil cartridge and can’t use the MM phono input? Why do they have the TV RCA input listed as audio? Can I use that with the phono ground?
To use a turntable, the signals need to be raised and re-equalized according to the curve which was used to create the record. The most common curve is the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) curve. This curve allows for more efficient handling of low frequencies on the record itself. Without this curve, music with a lot of low notes, would consume an entire side very quickly. So they press the record with the low notes at higher frequencies. Moving Coil and Moving Magnet cartridges have different levels and characteristics that need to be treated differently. Therefore, a phono input on a receiver needs to do more then a standard RCA input, it needs to condition the signal to re-equalize the RIAA Curve adjusted signal to produce the frequencies as recorded and adjust for the unique characteristics of the cartridge type. On dedicated phono pre-amplifiers, there are even fine adjustments for capacitance etc, to account for design variations within a cartridge type. What you get in a typical receiver for a phono input is very basic one-size fits all handling of Moving Magnet cartridges. -Jon
My biggest concern with this model is that so many people have mentioned bugginess with HDMI video and audio cutting out randomly and other instability, which isn't found on the Denon x3800h. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Aside from those things, it seems pretty good.
I own this and it never cuts out. Very seldomly it powers on or off by itself, but I think it's a cec issue, it happened a lot with my last avr. Before I bought this, I tried out the TX-RN7100 and that avr would cut out and go to a black screen, returned it and got a RZ50 and I never have that issue anymore.
@@av_rob79 Thanks for replying, good to know. So the only issue you've noticed is maybe once a month it will turn on or off randomly like during a movie/music? If it's really that, then maybe they've fixed some of the bugs other people complain about in firmware updates and I should still consider this, maybe over the way more expensive x3800h.
@Ryan W. West Yes works perfectly, Dirac runs perfect too. I've upgraded surrounds and ran Dirac 3 times now with absolutely no problems. The power on/off is the only issue but I'm not convinced it's the avrs problem. I'm thinking it's a TV setting. But it does happen more than once a month, I'd say once or twice a week. And it always happens within the first few minutes of either powering it on or off. I never worry about it powering off when I'm watching a movie. If it didn't power off within the first few minutes of starting the movie then it's good
@@av_rob79 Out of curiousity can I ask which TV model you have?
I'm having black out issues now with mine, it never did it when I first bought it last year but now it is with DVDs and when my lap top is plugged it too, does anyone know how to fix this please ?

I haven’t gone through setup yet with the included mic as I’m not sure where it attaches and haven’t looked either. But out of the box it’s very very underwhelming. My pioneer sc-1323 sounded so much better. RF7 II fronts as 2-channel.
The mic plugs into the front panel. You will need to open the door to expose the input. The mic is underwhelming - I agree. That doesn't mean you can't get a good calibration with it. Let me know if the sound improves with calibration. -Jon
Hello, good day, sorry for the inconvenience but I don't know what to do, on some occasion I returned my Onkyo TX-RZ50 to factory mode, it restarted but on the TV screen you can no longer see anything of the settings, I lost all the screens that the amplifier shows, I can see each connected device by selecting it and everything works fine, But when I go into the settings menu it goes all black and I have to be guided by the small screen of the device, but it's very difficult for some things, what can I do to reset the menus?, by the way with your configuration guide I have helped myself a lot because you are showing the screens, congratulations, excellent work, I hope you can help me, thank you very much.
I have one not sure how to hook up the streo amp for dolby atmos
Good day i just purchased rz50 lately.. i need help how can i install 7.1.4 using the speaker wires into spealer inputs.
please advise accordingly. thanks
Not sure were you need assistance, but I will go over some key steps that I recommend with setting up speaker inputs. While writing this, I have the manual open and you may follow allow with your copy (available from Onkyo online) as well.
I will assume your speakers are placed and you just need to connect the wires. If you can, label the wires to reduce the chance of wiring to the wrong terminals. Speaker wires are two conductor pairs. To indicate which wire is for (+) and which one is for (-) terminals, one wire will look different. Sometimes the insulation will have a colored line or will have a raise rib. I have seem clear insulation with the wire itself having different colors (one copper, one silver in color). Pick a common convention for all wires, speakers and terminals where the line, color or raised rib is always going to the same polarity. I always choose the (colored/rib) wire to be for the negative signal. If the wire has two colors I use the follow
Black/White wire = Black (-), White (+)
Black/Red wire = Black (-), Red (+)
Silver/Copper wire = Silver (-), Copper (+)
Failure to be consistent will cause the signal to a speaker to be out of phase and not sound correct.
Page 39
The unit supports 4-16 ohm speakers, which include most of the standard offering. I would stay clear of speakers that dip below 4 ohm regularly ( e.g. Magnepan electrostatic speaker).
Make sure power is disconnected before making speaker connections. I recommend removing the power cord entirely as the power button may be pushed by accidence during the process.
For your unit, Onkyo recommends stripping off 1/2 inch (12 mm) of the insulation. Before stripping you will want to separate the +/- wire pair enough so you can easily connect each wire to the respective terminal. I would aim for at least 3 inches. Do not stripe more then the recommended 12 inch (12 mm) of insulation from each wire. Once connected, bare wire should not be exposed to the extent it could come in contact with another wire.
For guidance on your 7.1.4 speaker layout, jump to page 58. As the TX-RZ50 only has 9 channels of internal amplification, you will need 2 channels of external amplification to address the surround back channels.
The diagram on page 58 will show which terminals to connect each speaker in your configuration. All speakers except for your surround back speakers will be connected to the TX-RZ50 directly. The surround back speakers will be connected to an external 2-channel (or more) amplifier of your choosing. That external amplifier will need to connect to the TX-RZ50 using a stereo pair of unbalanced RCA cables connected to the "surround back" terminal of the TX-RZ50. Your subwoofer will not utilize speaker wire, but rather a single channel unbalanced RCA cable.
Let me know if you need further guidance from there. -Jon
Do you think the DLBC is something to miss since the RZ50 is not capable?
As the RZ50 only provides a common subwoofer signal output, it is only designed for one subwoofer. As such, the benefit of DLBC would not be realized. -Jon
@@ripewave yes, I am aware of that. I should have asked if you have ever had the opportunity to listen to DLBC that this unit is not capable of with a different unit and say if DLBC is a must or not?
I have used DLBC and it helps noticeably for multiple subwoofers. -Jon
But is the volume knob tactile and clicky?
I not clicky but I can’t remember how tactile it was. -Jon
Great video as usual, but don't get fooled with 4ohm setting. Jean @audioholics says to always leave on the 8ohms setting cause it does funny things with power output if set to 4ohm.
I will have to find Gene's video which explains. As I am using external amplifiers for my initial test, I suspect the setting won't make a difference. If it does, then I would be surprised. However, I will want to know how that setting impacts the output when I conduct the test for the internal amplifiers. Regardless, I can try it both ways to hear the difference. Thanks for raising this point up. -Jon
@@ripewave I think he mentioned it on his Yamaha a6a bench test video.
Thanks for pointing me to the specific video. -Jon
So listened to the Audioholics video for the Yamaha A6A bench test. Yes, he explains that the 4 ohm setting only exists for UL testing. While it may improve output for 2-channel listening, it is disastrous for multi-channel playback and not to use. He say the 8 ohm setting is sufficient for all loads. Does that translate to how Onkyo has implemented this setting? He was surprised that Yamaha had moved the setting from "advanced" to a menu to is readily accessible. If this setting is potentially detrimental to playback, it made more sense to hide in an advance menu. As Onkyo includes the low-impedance setting as a required step within the initial configuration wizard, I wonder if Onkyo's implementation is really the same. Why would they raise the visibility of this setting if it requires advanced knowledge?
Other reports I have read specific to Onkyo say that setting to 4 ohm could overheat the AV Receiver. Given these two reports, I would certainly not set unless we can receive more clarity on when it should be used.
Thanks for calling this out - very helpful.
Jon
@@ripewave And that's why channels like yours is so valuable to us all. These AV companies muddy the waters so much with marketing nonsense, we the consumers don't know what to do for the best.
Hey I’m facing challenges with volume calibration with Onkyo provided mic. And in this video you skipped that. Can u please help. I get low signal to noise errors or clipping errors otherwise
hi, can uou help me, I have the same receiver and yesterday after I upgrade the software the I.I./O assign a can't see anymore on my tv screen ans how I turn back the Stand-by love, thank you and have a nice day
Sorry you had that issue after upgrading. I would look in the manual first for details that may help, if not I would try a factory reset if you are not concerned with restoring any lost settings. If a reset would cause too much of the configuration to be lost, I would call Onkyo for assistance. -Jon
So many thing I hate about this amplifier. I wish I would have never bought it. You just can not adjust the sound the way you want it. Base and treble tones are preset and adjustments are unavailable. Trying to adjust the speakers your way is another issue. The voices just sound muffled and garbled. I had an older Onkyo TX -SR-804 which just up and died sounded better and was definitely more user friendly. I could adjust everything my way. All the reviews are so positive so I bought it.
I want to thank You for your reviews that you put so much effort into. But it seems like real bad things are just passed over and not mentioned in all the reviews no matter who did them.
Sorry to hear that you are not getting good results from this model. Did you try calibration using Dirac Live? -Jon
I am curious how VOX does with Onkyo, and Integra, and Pioneer. I had an Onkyo relatively recently I was never so disappointed. Gutless wonder. Build that was meh. I sold Onkyo for over 10 years just at the tail end of Onkyo hey days. Integra as well. I sold tons of Onkyo then. Now it is not so clear I would now. I really hope VOX gets these brands together. I sold Pioneer too. The Elite line was special. So we have to see how this goes in the future.
Vincent - As someone who sold these brands, your perspective is well received. The TX-RZ50 I understand to be a full pre-VOX design. The new TX-RZ70 (and equipment models from Integra and Pioneer) appears to be the first models with a design that has been influenced by the new VOX ownership. I believe those models will start to define what this new chapter will bring. Let's hope for the best. In the meantime, I begin my listening tests to determine how well the TX-RZ50 delivers sound quality vs. Marantz Cinema 50 (also my Emotiva RMC-1 just because it is there). -Jon
One of the reasons bought the Cinema 50 because I dislike the front of the RZ50, that display is a bit harsh and it just looks old to me. Can't wait to see the comparison to the Cinema 50.
I do feel that looks are still an important criteria. If you don't think it is aligned with the esthetic your are seeking, its sound quality and features may not matter. - Jon
Curious to hear what sort of glitchy type stuff people have encountered with their RZ-50? Mine will blackout the TV screen and only display the volume when running the volume (in large amounts) both up and down. It will also from time to time automatically switch to a different input during power up, in witch will just have to be switched back. And random relay clicks (is what it sounds like) that can happen anytime, once or twice during use. Anyone else have similar experiences or are these things considered “normal operation”?
I will pay attention during my listening phase planned for part 2 for those type of issues. Thanks for calling attention to those. -Jon
Could I connect some my front lcr with the pre-outs and then my surrounds and atmos on the regular amplified outputs?
Thank you
Yes. It is possible to use the pre outs for just the LCR speakers then use the amplifiers for the surround channels. But you may need external amps if you are to power a 2nd row of heights - Jon
Do you think there is a difference between this and the Integra DRX 5.4?
My guess is that the differences are subtle. I need to get an Integra model in-house to explore. -Jon
do the front located USB has a videoplayback ? or it is just for music...?
I just confirmed with the manual - music only via USB.
i just purchased this AVR and and watched all three parts concerning it. Can anyone plainly describe the connections necessary for a 7.2.4 arrangement with the use of an external amplifier. I have an amp with 12 channels and plenty of power snd would also like guidance as to which soeakers should be powered by the amp or the AVR itself. Thanks for any assistance!
good afternoon. it's nice to watch your videos. Tell me, please. how to connect 7.1.4? I don't have 2 speakers connected. they don't work. I'm doing something wrong. Tell me, please. thanks
Is it possible to use speaker + preamp on this device at the same time or do I have to choose between those two ? I'd like to use something like 4.1 system where my open headphones would be the left and right (I have schiit preamp for those) and then use couple old non active speakers for surround. I think I could do this with Maranz cinema 70 and because of the price difference between these two is 100 euros I'd guess Onkyo would be a better choice. Thank you
My subwoofer is connected through high pass with the surround speakers. When I choose yes for subwoofer setup I cannot get through Dirac without error messages. If I choose no on subwoofer what other options should I choose to accommodate the subwoofer signal? Will crossover settings on the surround speakers do that?
I would choose no subwoofer and set the surround speaker to full range. If you set a crossover for the surround speakers, you won't get low frequencies to your subwoofer. However, you likely have a second issue. With your configuration you will only get low frequencies to your subwoofer if there is low frequency details in the mix for surround channels - and the LFE channel content may only be mixing into the front channels with subwoofer turned off.
From manual - If "Configuration" - "Subwoofer" is set to "No", "Front" is fixed to "Full Band", and the low pitched range of the other channels is output from the front speakers.
How much do you hear coming out of your subwoofer without DIRAC? My guess is there isn't much low frequency content getting to the subwoofer. I suspect you have configured as such to work around the need to run a physical wire to the subwoofer. You may want to try a wireless option. There are several out there for under $100 - www.amazon.com/wireless-subwoofer-kit/s?k=wireless+subwoofer+kit

@@ripewave Thank you!
I’m using onkyo RZ 50 stereo mode with 2 floor standing from heck with bi amping but the bass level is lower than my Denon 16000???
Is there a setting that is directing the bass to a subwoofer? Do you have the main speakers set to large? Ensure your crossover setting match that of the Denon. -Jon

im thinking of buying this rz50 or a sony av3000es. currently using an older marentz, that has no atmos, is the rz50 sound good music and movie running 5.1. looking to add atmos ..2 or .4
The RZ50 should work well for up to 7.1.4 speaker layouts. -Jon
How to sync my fire stick remote with onkyo rz50?!?
I haven’t tested, but Amazon says -
Onkyo and Fire TV Stick remote compatibility
Go to Settings on your Fire TV.
Select Equipment Control.
Select Manage Equipment.
Note: Select Advanced Settings on this screen to activate or deactivate Automated Device Discovery.
Select Add Equipment and choose the equipment you'd like to add.
was looking for a review of the RZ50 , do not care about what he has or compairing to
I hope this video helped
Good video rip , I have the onkyo rz50 as well ,looking to upgrade my speakers down the line klipsch r41 looking at klipsch 600
I have seen positive reviews on the Klipsch 600, but haven't heard myself. The Klipsch "The Fives" I have I find to be very good for TV/Movies but lack clarity for music playback. I understand the 600s do much better. -Jon
damn carver was the shit back in the days
I use to long for a Carver amp in the 80s. -Jon
what is the name of the pre-out adapter?
Are you asking about the cable snakes I use? They are Hosa XLR803 Balanced Snake XLR to XLR Cable - (9.75 Feet). The RCA to XLR adapters I use are WJSTN RCA to XLR Cable.

I cant find part 2
I guess I didn’t title as such (odd) but this is part 2 -
Onkyo TX-RZ50 AV Receiver Sound Quality, Room Calibration vs. Marantz and Emotiva

I got the sony7000 today, if you want me to check anything out let me know.
Congratulations! You beat me to it. Very interested in hearing about their room calibration and 360 sound. -Jon
@@ripewave When setup is sounds equally as good as my denon 3800. I slightly think I like the sony sound over the denon, but as an amature it just all sound really good to me. I'm still playing with the setup but the 5.1.5.3 360 Reality Audio config is cool, for movies it opens up information that was condensed into 1 center now over 3 LCR low channels under the center channel. I like how sounds open up into their own discrete channel.
Price this model???
$1,599 on the Onkyo website. I have seen for $1,399 on some retail web stores. -Jon
Amazon has it for $1096 today.
That is a great deal over the already great pricing for that model. -Jon
Just bought the rz50 for $900 New! Accessories4less
Excellent! I hope it serves you well. -Jon
What can I do to reset the menus?, by the way with your configuration guide I have helped myself a lot because you are showing the screens, congratulations, excellent work, I hope you can help me, thank you very much.
