Thank you for posting this video. My Onkyo TX-RZ50 arrived a few days ago. I used your tutorial to set up my receiver. I have never heard DIRAC in action before and WOW what a game changer. I was skeptical before but now I will never go back. I can't believe I have gone this long without it. For anyone hesitant about this product: run, don't walk, and get yourself set-up with DIRAC. I toggle the DIRAC room correction on and off while listening to my source content and the difference is breathtaking. So immersive. Thank you for your guidance 👍🍺
Hi Matt! Thank you for your feedback! I’m happy my guide could help. When I first got the RZ I felt overwhelmed and learned about this topic for several months to get it right. After that I wanted to share my findings so that other future RZ owners don’t have to search on the web for more info forever 😊Enjoy your RZ Matt and I’m glad everything sounds terrific now.
@@marciahoey3542 DIRAC is a digital room correction to make your speakers sound as good as possible in your specific room. It gets rid of too much base or highs. It works really well, even with older or not so high end speakers. You can use your old Onkyo as an extra amp, but the RZ50 will have to be the central hub for DIRAC to work.
@@54tristin Go into the quick menu option and change from Dirac slot 1 to a slot not being used. By toggling between the slot being used and one not being utilized you can hear the difference with Dirac engaged and disengaged. Trust me, you will hear a big difference 🍺
Thank you for the well made video. I just installed the RZ50 in my home theater and followed your instructions for the DIRAC. Worked like a charm however I have not gone back into the settings to verify the crossover figures. I will do that tonight. The DIRAC software seemed to work just as it was supposed to. The sound is fabulous and my theater has never sounded so good.
Hello TG! Thank you so much! I am glad my video could help. I love how my RZ50 sounds with DIRAC LIVE every day and the software has gotten better since I made this video. With my latest setup of new speakers the crossover settings were done by the software correctly as well. Enjoy your new home theater 🙂
Dirac is a superior piece of software, the Onkyo receiver which is a huge beast, supplied without a manual is difficult to use and adjust. I had to download a 180+ page manual that was obtuse and made no attempt at explaining which control you should be using at any given time during the setup. Hours are spent learning the most basic functionality, it all could be so much simpler!
Hi Bennett, yes I was surprised too not to have a physical manual with this class of a receiver but those are the times I guess. And like you said the pdf manual doesn’t do much to tell you about Dirac. That’s why i studied it online for a long time, browser through message boards and watched tutorials and put together this video in the end to hopefully others out who felt overwhelmed at first too.
This is by far the best guide I’ve found. Thank you for that. I’m a bit confused about the part where you modify the gain of the mic and volume of the speakers in the first steps of the Dirac process. Can’t wait to try this!
Very helpful video even for my TX-NR7100! I didn't even know I could use the PC app and it is a lot more intuitive and powerful. I literally could not even figure out what the measurement positions were in the Onkyo app (their diagram is nonsensical) and that was my main reason for seeking out help. But using the PC app made it a lot clearer, *plus* I was able to really dial things in manually a lot better (like the initial measurement levels). Your post-Dirac tips really helped too - my crossover and levels were also way off after the Dirac setup. I set the levels based on the SPL Meter app on my phone and the crossover and LPF based on both my manuals and what the Dirac measurement itself showed (turns out, my speakers' specs are pretty accurate!), and everything sounds great now. Thanks for the vid!
Hello @modernClassic 👋 Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience! I’m glad my video could be of support and that you can fully enjoy your awesome setup 😊
I just bought my RZ50 in December of 2022. The room is rather small and full of furniture, and is my pc/audio room. So far I have only ran the built in Dirac calibration but I'm ready now to download the software and run it from my pc. The built in Dirac has already made a big difference in my 7.1.4 Atmos setup but I see now it could be much better. Thank you so much for this video and all the time you put into it!
Hi Mandrix, thank you for sharing! I’m glad I could help out. As much as Dirac can be intimidating at first it’s worth the trouble in the end. And once it’s setup you have endless hours of enjoyment with your setup 😊👍
This was so helpful. Thank you so much. The one thing I discovered, by doing some additional research, is when doing the speaker level adjustments after the Dirac filter has been transferred to the receiver you should use an external source, like a test disc. The internal test tones bypass the DIRAC calibrations so it wont be as accurate as using an external source.
THANK YOU for this great tutorial! Very good explanation, better than the instructions that is all but absent in the on-line manual for my newly purchased Onkyo TX-RN7100 receiver and Klipsch RP series speakers. Though complex, your tutorial at least explains and teaches.
Hi Gina, thank you for your kind words 😊 I’m happy I could help out. I love surround sound and Dirac live but I also wished for a better tutorial on this from the manufacturer. It took me a month of research and trial and error to understand the process and piece it all together. Have fun with your awesome 7100 and your Klitsch speakers! 👍
Hi Dicey! Great 👍 take your time. It looks confusing and overwhelming at first but take it step by step. It’s worth it in the end 😊And if you don’t want to do it right away, you can always do it later when you have time and patience for it. If you have trouble you can always ask me. I’ve just done new DiracLive measurements for my new speaker system.
Great vid full of useful info! I will point out a couple things with the crossover section. The LPF for the LFE channel shouldn't be set to 80, like you recommend. LFE content in movies can reach up to 120 HZ or more, so you want to set it either there or turn it off completely, otherwise you rob yourself of LFE content in movies. I'd also recommend against setting any speakers to full range unless they are extremely capable. there are virtually no tower speakers that can compete with a subwoofer in the low bass region.
Hello Ryan. Thank you! The cut off frequency is heavily discussed under us surround audio guys. You can do 120Hz but if a movie is not mixed well (which unfortunately does happen too often) you might end up with voices, especially male voices, in your subwoofer and that really doesn't sound good. So if you set it to 80Hz you are making sure only the deep bass ends up in the sub and nothing else. The sub should really only playback what your main speakers can't handle. When you have descent L/R speakers they can take care of the upper band of the low frequencies with ease. And also "Full range" is the recommended setting even when you have bookshelf speakers. And when using room correction like DiracLive you know exactly what your speakers are capable off and when and where frequencies need to get handed over.
I just got my Onkyo TX-rz50. I'm a newbie in the audiophile world. A couple of weeks ago I purchased the 5.1.4 klipsch speakers system, and I was lucky enough that I was checking Amazon for something else, and it popped up that they were 4 units available. I'll try to set it up this weekend in my living room. I got the 85 QN90A on sale over prime day as well. I hope that my $5,000 investment is worth the effort and time to acquire all this stuff to enjoy my 4k HDR bluray movie collection. Thanks for the video. I think it'll help me a lot. Greetings from Houston.
Hello Menacordero1, thank you for watching and congrats for able to get the RZ50! It is still so hard to get. That sounds like a really nice setup. I hope you are having lots of fun with your new system!
Thank you so much man. I just picked up the RZ50 receiver up and couldn’t figure out how to properly set up DIRAC. I’ve been using just the AcuuEq, which is total crap.
Thanks for the great tips. I struggled to get through the dirac setup on my RZ250 with the onkyo app, and dirac app on IOS. The PC app was much better. Your explanations of tweaking the filters was great. Luckily I didn't need to make any tweaks, but I plan to run my receiver as-is for a few months then consider making adjustments.
Hi Tristan, thank you for your feedback. I’m glad I could help out. I still prefer the PC app too and with my new speakers set up I didn’t need the manually added bass hump any more. Dirac still made my new speakers sound better than ever. Enjoy your RZ50 😎👍
Thank you for an excellent tutorial!!!!! I am seriously considering making the RZ50 my next AV receiver!!! I'm going to watch your review of the RZ50 after this video.
Great video and a clear explanation, sadly I'm getting a low signal to noise error and I've been unable to fix it so can't create a filter for my TX-RZ50, AccuEq works ok but Dirac fails every time.
Hi Roy 👋 thank you so much! 😊 The signal to noise is finicky for sure. For my environment it was the AC humming away which by human ear wasn’t even that noticeable. I had to completely shut off the AC and everything worked fine afterwards. Try to raise the speaker levels a little bit so that the measuring tone is louder and try playing with the mic gain. And if you wanted to invest a little bit more, the UMIK 1 has a bigger sensitivity which can help in difficult cases. I made a second video about the UMIK 1 and was surprised myself how the results were even noticeably better. I hope you can make it work, DiracLive is not easy but totally worth it in the end.
@@SamDansCouch I ordered the RZ50 and am waiting patiently for it. Can’t wait. I’ve always had Sony ES receivers as my uncle worked for them and got us a nice discount. So this is my first non Sony. Do you have any negatives about the RZ50?
I have the Onkyo RZ50 as well after finishing dirac live setup could I still go back and adjust the speaker levels/ crossovers manually and make sure there correct at 75db and my subwoofer around 80db
To better understand Dirac. Once it is calibrated is it already on with the RZ50 if it says Dirac ON or I still need to go to EQ to use what was calibrated?
Hello anandshah71! In my opinion the stereo performance is very good. When music I listen to is not Atmos, I always switch to stereo with my Onkyo and it sounds very detailed.
It might be a stupid question, but how does a layperson know what to set the adjustments at with the tone curve thing mentioned? I appreciate good sound, but have zero knowledge of how best to manually adjust the graphs shown in the Dirac live program. My Klipsch setup and Onkyyo TX-RZ50 sound good, but I would love to know how to really make them shine.
Hi Chris 👋 If you don’t want to manually adjust the curve, dont worry about it. The latest DiracLive version is set to give you more base with the automatic curve. So you can do the measuring, let Dirac Live take care of the curve and then send it to your receiver. It will sound better already. Don’t stress yourself about not knowing everything, it is a process you can go as deep as you want it to be or just leave it at the automatic settings. I know it can be intimidating at first but it is worth the time you put in 👍
@@SamDansCouch, Cheers Sam, I had another go with Diac on Saturday afternoon and did some adjusting. I did not mess about with it too much, but I will. I definitely noticed a change in the bass. I am sure I will make about a million and one adjustments in time to come, haha. Thanks for the reply.
I wonder if I even saved the dirac calibration. When dirac finalized the Onkyo app transferred the settings to the avr slot 1 but I see no calibrations on the app or dirac pc in order to play with the curves. So I wonder if it even saved/transfered to begin with.
The measurement should always show up on screen once calibration is successful and after transfer it should ask you if you want to save the settings locally as well.
@@SamDansCouch It transferred only I think but that is it which may explain why I didn't think Dirac was a wow factor. When I would select Dirac slot 1 it was dull.
I have a separate RZ50 hooked up to my heights and rear surrounds with no way of connecting my other channels to the pre outs of the avr. Is it possible to run Dirac for just these channels or will the software fail and error out since the mic won’t detect a signal from the rest of the channels that are not run off this avr….
Hello Grant 👋That's a cool setup. You will be locked into a 5.1, 7.1 or similar setting with the room correction but you might be able to skip the speakers when Dirac is trying to play the test tone and doesn't detect it. I can't try this out right now myself but you should try it just for the hell of it. When Dirac lets you skip the "silent speakers" you will still be able to change curves and corrections of the detected speakers you have and export it into your RZ50.
Nicely Done. Hope your enjoying your new speakers. At the beginning of the video is the Master output & Mic gain set to an arbitrary low setting & what determines raising the Master output vs mic gain ? Thanks
Thank you Deadline! Mic gain should be as low as you can so that the mic wont pick up any surrounding noises too easily. That is also valid for noises we might not hear so well ourselves (Air conditioning, water builder low hum) so it is recommended to chose a low gain. Master volume should be at a volume that’s definitely 20 DB over the background noise (you can see the levels moving on this screen when you have background noise). It all depends how noisy your surrounds are and you have to get DIRAC to be able “hear” its test tone loud and well enough separated from anything else that might be going on. It’s a little finicky but once its set the test tones should all go through.
Hi Glenn, that's exciting news that you'll get your RZ50 soon! I hope you'll have a lot of fun with it and I'm glad if my findings can help you setting it up.
@@glenn4452 hi Glenn, I’m sorry to hear that you are still waiting on getting you RZ50. I read that Onkyo was able to ramp up productions at their plants lately and people have been able to get the 7100 more easily these days. So I hope the RZ50 situation will relax soon as well. I do see it popping up for order on the Onkyo website briefly here and there. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
@@SamDansCouch I’m trying to be patient I ordered it on January 06,the company I ordered it from they keep me posted, they said there were some coming in on may 13,but they didn’t show up, they said there waiting to hear from them, the good news is I’m # 17 on the waiting list I was at 56.
Hello Danny! I usually recommend to put the sub at 50% volume and then do the volume test with Dirac before the actually measuring starts. If the sub is too low during the test you can bump it up a notch. You want to slowly get all speakers at the same volume before the Dirac measurements are made.
Thinking about getting the RZ-50, Maranz Cinema 50 or Denon 3800h. Seeing this Dirac live (why most people seem to like the rz50) it’s seems to much for someone that just likes to watch movies and play games and a feature I will never use.
Hello! As a gamer and movie enthusiast myself I can definitely recommend taking the extra time with room correction. Even if you dont want to do it right away, having it gives you the option later on if you decide to use it. The advantage with the Onkyo receivers is that you dont need to pay extra for DiracLive while brands like Denon make you acquire and pay extra for a license.
wow this is the best video that exists about Dirac Live. Now if only I could get my Onkyo RZ50 to stop defaulting to Bluray Player input ever every time I turn it on!
Hi cainification! Thank you so much! 😎 I’d try to deactivate CEC on your blu ray player. CEC in my cases always does the opposite of what it should be doing, so I have it off.
Hi Dr. Alan! Thank you for watching my video 😊 Press the gear button on the remote and go to the menu point number 2 “speaker”. There select 4. “Level Calibration”. The test tone will start after 5 seconds.
Hi, nice stuff. I'm trying out a Pioneer LX505 with Dirac Live and I'm not happy. First of all, I don't know how to set the master volume, microphone gain correctly. Tryied lot of points. I have a 5.1.2 system and while the centre point is fine with the UMK1, the other points are either too loud or too weak. That's why I can't do the calibration. When is the ground quiet, how many dB is it? Each tutorial is different. I am overwhelmed by my inertia on this subject. Can you give me a step-by-step guide on how to set these sliders, and possibly at what point it should be considered correct.
@@KrzysztofKozakowski-c6l Hello 👋 It’s all a trial and error thing with the volume. Try a low gain so that not too much environmental noise gets picked up by the mic. If it is too low, Dirac will tell you that the volume is too low. Then raise the gain a little bit so that you dont need the volume to be at a high level disturbing your neighbors. The UMIK1 is much more sensitive so you can get away with lower volumes and gains. The environmental noise: look at what it is at and add 20db to it. The test sounds needs to be around 20db above noise level. I totally understand you feeling overwhelmed. I was too in the beginning. After doing it many times though it is not as hard any more as it all looks. Keep playing with it and have your noise to test signal level at a 20db distance. You should be able to run your test tone without going deaf 😊 Good luck!
@@SamDansCouch thank you for your support. I can't cope with it anymore. I always get an error, either signal to low or the other one. You are offering me this solution as I understand it: 1. MAster volume and mic gain set to 0 2. move mic gan to - well, I had it at 97% and got an error, but ok now set it to 90% and see what is the noise level of the floor, e.g. -60dB - (I read that -50 or slightly below is optimal) 3. move the master volume to make the speaker level bł 20dB so I stop the master volume at -40dB 4. check all speakers 5. I look for the quietest one 6. i should adjust this speaker to -40dB either mic gain or master volue - ???? 7. adjust the rest of the speakers with their sliders to about the same level 8. the sub is at 0 all the time on its knob 9. assume I have the levels set - then now I should go up with master volume? To what value. I'm worried about the speaker (I know personally of a case where a friend calibrated the volume too high and damaged the speaker) Do I understand this correctly and should I do it this way? I am sorry that maybe for you it is easy, but unfortunately it does not work for me :(
Hey, no worries this is the hardest part of the deal. If your environmental noise is lets say -40db, your speaker level with the test tone need to be at least 20db above it. That means the speaker volume should read -20db at least to make sure the background noise doesnt mess with your test tone. Find your softest speaker and adjust the volume of all the other speakers to this speaker including the subwoofer. Also the test tone should never reach a level where you feel it’s uncomfortable loud. I can recommend following the guide on the following website which talks about what I just wrote. I hope this helps 😊 mehlau.net/audio/dirac-live-2-mic-speaker-levels/
Hi Nick! Thank you for watching 🙂I haven’t used the app in a while but I saw they did an overhaul of the entire app. Maybe there is a bug. I exclusively use the computer app for Dirac since the mobile apps just don’t offer the same kind of flexibility. If you only have a phone/tablet you could try using the official Dirac live app instead of the onkyo app.
QUICK QUESTION: I’d like to create TWO different and separate DIRAC calibrations for two different SPEAKER CONFIGURATIONS - One in 2.1 Channel and One in a MultiChannel Speaker Configuration (probably 7.1.2) When I switch my speaker configuration from 2.1 to anything else my DIRAC calibrations are obviously deleted. Is it possible to create calibrations in a 2.1 Channel Speaker Configuration, SAVE IT TO MY COMPUTER, then create another calibration in a MultiChannel Speaker Configuration, SAVE THAT TO MY COMPUTER, and then be able to RE-UPLOAD/REINSTALL the appropriate calibration for my current Speaker Configuration I happen to be using? (I switch between 2.1 and 7.1.2) I haven’t found a way to do that with the mobile app on my phone but I’m hoping that’s possible to save presets/calibrations with my laptop in multiple speaker configurations? Thanks for any help you can provide - Great vid by the way! (Oh, and my receiver is an RZ50)
Hi LGL Studios, that’s a good idea and yes when you use the computer you can save as many different Dirac measurements as you want. You have more flexibility then when using the app. The only think you’ll have to change inside the onkyo is the speaker configuration as in going from 7.1.2 to 2.1 and vice versa. When you changed that inside the rz50 you can re-upload your saved Dirac measurement for the setup speaker number 😎
Best Dirac Live calibration video ever! I’m finding some troubles after doing the all process. Selecting one of the Dirac live saved settings a few of the Music and Movie modes on the receiver are no longer available such as listening music in stereo mode plus subwoofer. And when I switch modes sometimes loud pops are coming out of the speakers and even putting the receiver on safety mode which requires a reboot on the system losing all the saved settings. Very frustrating for me… so I’m not using the Dirac Live presets until I find a way to correct that. Any tips? Thank you!
Hello @diogolight2793 👋 Thank you so much for your kind words 😊 Indeed you can not use all listening modes when you have a DIRAC saved setting activated since DIRAC doesnt work with some of the DSP modes for extra music effects. It does concern me though that you hear loud pops. Switching modes should not trigger any noises. You can try to troubleshoot the volume settings inside your receiver. Check if the subwoofer has way too much volume compared to the rest of the speaker volumes. It’s the same thing when you start doing the DIRAC room correction where you need to try to have all speakers plus subwoofer at a comparable volume before doing the measurements. You can check the volume of each speaker in the DIRAC software and on each volume slider the volume is displayed in db. Find the softest speaker and then adjust all the other volumes of the other speakers to that volume and then rest DIRAC. If you did all that and it still pops, I would think about contacting Onkyo to make sure it is not a hardware defect in the DSP. I hope you can get it fixed. It is a great software, just got to find the source of the problem 😎
@@SamDansCouchthere is another tutorial by “audio” something that I saw that talks about how to pre set your speakers before using Dirac or you may end up hearing clicks or pops in your speakers
@@robertgraham5486 yes it’s a good idea to keep everything neutral and the sub volume quiet low before doing the volume settings within Dirac. Get all speakers including the sub to the same volume and then run the room correction. That should eliminate any problems with popping 👍
@SamDansCouch hello late to the party about this great receiver. Still waiting for a sale that i missed a few weeks back. Anyhow, i have accoustimass 6 connected to my onkyo tx-sr600 (still using to this day lol) in my living room that is open to the eating area and kitchen. I would like to add the RZ50 and RSL 12s with the bose system. Do you think having the RSL 12s would drown the sub from bose or is there a way to blend that with the new sub? For me the bose system is good enough i just like to add something you can feel when it hit the low note. Great video by the way and going to use this for reference
Hi Loooga18! Thank you so much! 🙂I have been running my RZ50 for the first two years with a Bose accoustimass system as well like I showed in my video and I was happy with it. The RZ50 makes everything sound better, especially when you use Dirac Lives room correction. I would use Dirac Live when you connect both subwoofers. When you balance the volume of both subs and then run room correction it should work out pretty well making everything sound like one unit. Having had this receiver for over two years now I would still buy it today. It's a beautiful device 😎
@SamDansCouch Thank you for your great video! Is there a way to lower the volume in the speakerlevel section. Everytime i go in to this menu my ears are riniging because its to loud....
Hi Jacob! I know what you mean. Sometimes you just want to look at the numbers but you always get blasted with the test tone first. Unfortunately all you can do is to press volume down when the countdown starts so it will be lowered quickly. The test tone is at reference level to properly adjust sound so it always goes back to that high volume. It is correct but can be loud. My wife can’t stand it when I adjust it 😁👍
Thank you for the very informative upload. Please can you clarify if one need to pay any additional cost for the DIRAC license in this RZ50? Newer models of Denon and Marantz etc. also have DIRAC software built in but there is a fee ($499 for multichannel) to be paid to activate the license in these models. Your kind confirmation will be highly appreciated.
Hello 👋 I love your username. Don’t we all feel like this sometimes 😅 I’m not a fan of any of the standard music presets that AV receivers come with other than sometimes routing stereo music through all surround speakers. I am using my DiracLive setting for movies as well as for music. I made one setting that fits both needs and it works out nicely. I kept the measurement and didn’t boost any extra bass. But if you want to have a different sound for movies, like maybe exaggerating the bass for more sub action, I would go with a separate Dirac live setting. On the onkyo you can have three different Dirac live presets that you can customize to your needs. I personally like to keep it neutral so that the sound is as close as possible like the original mixer in the studio intended the movie/music to sound like 😊
@@tiredoldman5329No problem, take it step by step. It looks overwhelming at first but it’s not so bad once you play with it. The reward is absolutely great sound. Have fun with it 😎
Good video, I've watched it a few times to prepare me for running Dirac on my Onkyo TX-RZ50 but when I go to Load target curve there is nothing there, it just tells me No items match your search. I can't figure it out, not sure if I did something wrong.
Hi Av Rob79! Thank you 😊 are you using the mobile or the computer app? The mobile app can sometimes not save correctly. On the computer I have a specific folder where I save my settings in to never lose it.
@@SamDansCouch Hey thanks for the quick reply, I ran it on PC. I found a website where I downloaded the target curves and got the curve I wanted, same one you used. I applied it with no problems, now I'm going to watch a movie and see how good Dirac made my setup. I thought it was weird that the target curves were not part of the Dirac software I downloaded, but all good, I found them online no problem.
Hey I have another question, I did all the mic measurements and everything went smooth, then all's I did was load the Harmon curve and apply but I'm not sure if Dirac did any other corrections besides the curve I loaded. I don't know if it corrected automatically or if I missed a step to have Dirac make corrections. I'm so new to this, I know after I've used the program a few times I'll have better understanding. Does Dirac make corrections automatically or was I supposed to apply them somehow? Sorry for the noobish questions.
@@av_rob79 oh don’t be sorry. It is very confusing at first and I had to work my way into it as well ☺️ yes Dirac will I make the corrections. Just load the extra curve (more bass) ontop of it and upload all this back to your RZ50. You should hear more base instantly 👍
Hello 👋 DLBC is a good add on but the regular DiracLive is already really good. Maybe in cases where you have a very difficult room and more than one sub it can make a greater difference. Else DL is more than enough 😊
I just reset my rz50 due to no sound after Bluetooth Apple Music the bass seems better after reset running nothing right next now do u need to add bass after Dirac live I’m running 5.1 very similar set up to your room and how do u get music better sounding movies have been good can u turn off Dirac as u wish?
Hi Mike, yes you can switch DIRAC on and off at any point in time and the RZ50 even remembers per input if you have the setting on or off. You have three different DIRAC Live slots to save three different configurations as well if you want to make one for music and another one for movies. Use the latest Dirac Live application for better bass since earlier versions used to "rob" you of bass. If it's still too little you should take a look at the Hermann target curves which gives you more bass for your measured target curve.
Thank you for this video. I had bought the Onkyo NR6050 because I use 5.1 and since this is in my living room I thought it was all I needed. Never the one to pass on a sale, I bought the NR7100. I have not hooked it up yet. Can you set up two different front speakers? In other words one set for watching movies and the other for stereo listening? I was thinking setting the second set as zone 2? Will Dirac work on them too?
Hi Michael, thank you for watching! And gratulations to your new Onkyo NR7100! That's a great receiver and a cool setup idea. You should definitely be able to do that with the zone 2 feature. You have three slots for the DIRAC settings (so you can have three different settings if you wanted). So I would just use slot 1 for your surrounds and 2 for your stereo speaker. Should be no problem. I wish you lots of fun setting it up. 😎
Hello there, Mr. Couch. You seem to be a great guy who really wants to make a positive impact on people's lives. I have a question i hope you can answer. Will the Rz50 work in a 7.2.4 configuration if i have an external amp for LCR speakers? Skip McCain
Hello Wendi McCain 👋 Thank you 🙏 and yes I love helping out as much as I can 😊 You can run 7.2.4 with an additional amp, something I’d love to do in the future too. But I’m not certain that you can chose to use the external amp specifically for LRC. Since the manual states SBL and SBR use I feel like the software might limit you to that. Unfortunately I can’t test it myself right now else I would 😊👍
Hi dominikpfleghaar5091, thank you for your feedback. I’m glad I could help 😊 At 10:43 is a clip from the Netflix show “The Witcher” which has very cool surround sound scenes.
@@arielrodriguez6980 once you transferred Dirac live to your AV receiver you can change things like speaker levels and crossover inside your receiver itself. It will save instantly. If you should transfer your Dirac settings from your computer /app again the internal settings will get overwritten and you’ll have to do the settings adjustments inside your receiver again.
Hello 👋 yes, I can recommend getting the UMIK-1. The included mic is not bad but for the final touches and best result I’d invest into the UMIK-1. I made a video about it too if you haven’t seen it yet: ruclips.net/video/f300eLN-_xo/видео.htmlsi=BIhBAjvEAyEqDV3r
Thanks for making this video. I tried doing the calibration once and it didn't work very well. The biggest issue I'm having is clipping when doing the subwoofer measurement. I have to turn down the sub WAY WAY below the other speakers to avoid clipping. I also don't know what level the subwoofer should be set on the physical setting on the back of the sub. Also, also... should I set the correct distances and do the level matching in the Onkyo before doing Dirac?
Hi TheMNbassHunter! I had the exact same problem with a new set of speakers and a new sub. What I did was to set the gain on the mic setting really low and match the other speakers volume to the subwoofer instead. That should get rid of the clipping warning. Physically set your sub to like 50% (12 o clock if it’s a dial). Dirac will set the distance and levels for you within the receiver after the measuring is complete. When you are done with Dirac make sure to give the sub a few more db again in the level settings because Dirac always is too shy on bass. I hope you can get rid of the clipping. It is an pain but you’ll get it done and it’s worth it in the end 🙂
Thanks again for the advice! I'm sure someone else who really knows what they're doing and took more time could get better results than me, but I got it to work with your video and responses. I am pretty happy with the results. I did an A-B comparison toggling the Room EQ on and off and it is noticeably better. With EQ off by comparison, for example, vocals sound like they are being sung into a plastic cup. With EQ on, it's like taking the cup away. Everything opens up and sounds more natural. I had no idea how much difference it could make. I thought it sounded great before, but now I hear the differences! Also, with the 10db Harmon curve for the subs, I didn't lose my bass either! Cheers!
@@TheMNbassHunter That's great, what you are describing is exactly what happens when you do DIRAC correctly. So you hit the nail on the head. I'm glad you can enjoy your system even more now. Have fun and watch/listen to some good deep base movies. I just watched "A quiet place" which uses the surrounds and bass very well which was fun 😎👍
Hello! I’m glad my video helped. I’ve heard from some DiracLive users having the same issue like you. Try to download the latest version of DiracLive (3.6.7). It helped many to get rid of this error message. I hope this helps 👍
How do you calibrate speakers in a multizone setup with the Onkyo TX-RZ50? Does it matter if they use the internal amps or preamp/separate amplifier? My main room is set up as 5.0 (no sub), with 3-way Boston Acoustics T-830 towers up front, .The woofers are 8". My bathroom zone (internally amplified) is particularly boomy with Sony Mega Bass boombox speakers. BTW, I'm using the Onkyo Android application. No PC or MAC available. Should I be using the Dirac application instead of Onkyo's?
Hello 👋 Yes you can have up to 3 different DiracLive settings saved in your Onkyo. So you can have one for your main and a whole different one for your second zone. I’d always recommend using the computer app but if you have no choice I’d use the DiracLive live app instead of the onkyo one since that one is updated more often. I hope you can reach your second zone with the mic wire. Personally I’d use a calibrated usb mic on a laptop to measure both zones. No messing with the puck wire across your living space then. But it’s all possible. I’m really happy with my room correction since I have an open living room space. It fixed a lot of problems. Take your time and enjoy. The results will be worth it 😊
Has anyone else had an issue changing the speaker volume after calibration? The menu is still accessible, and I can change the values, but no audible change can be heard (even at -10dB!).
Hi Ryan👋After calibration the volume settings are set within your DiracLive profile. What you can do is adjust each individual speaker volume on the receiver itself to fine tune the result. Like in my case I gave my center speaker a few db more for better dialogue clarity.
Great vid. One question, do you by any chance know why the volume sounds to low? I have to set the volume to 80 - 85 to really feel/hear all the speakers working. Also, I was expecting the base to shake my apartment at these volumes, but it does not. My setup is a 5.1.2.
Hi DJ, thank you so much! The volume settings depends heavily on the sound mix of each show production. With some ATMOS productions I have to pull the volume up to around 58. Gives ATMOS lots of headroom for the exploding moments. If you want everything all around to be louder you can evenly raise the volume settings within the receiver settings for each speaker (e.g. give every speaker a few more dbs on top) after everything is calibrated. Also check if the subwoofer can be upped manually (usually subs have an extra volume dial on the unit itself too). Let‘s make those walls shake 😎
Hello Mr Steel M! Make sure you have the latest version of the Dirac software, they release updates quite often. Also make sure that your Onkyo and your phone/computer are on the same network with an active internet connection. And if it all fails unplug your Onkyo, wait a minute and re plug the power back in. You can also check out this guide: confluence.dirac.services/display/DLS/Troubleshooting%3A+No+Devices+Found
Hello TheRdawg16, I personally think the supplied microphone is enough and detects the range of frequencies needed for the room correction. I'm very happy with my results & I'm using the supplied mic 😊👍
The RZ50 manual makes set-up seem easy -- two options, measuring at three locations or nine, and using the Onkyo controller app. Based on your excellent (but complicated for a non-techie) tutorial, am I right to assume that neither of those simple options will produce usable results?
Hi Michael 👋 The manual pretty much skips over the important things and sure does want to make it look easy. You can use the app and it will work. It will definitely be better than not using Dirac live at all. But you can put a little more work into it like in my video and the results will be even better. It is intimidating I know. That’s why I researched this stuff for a long time. It’s worth it but if you don’t want to do this, which I totally understand, using the app and fewer measuring points will be the next best thing. It’s definitely better than onkyos own room correction which is also an option. 😊👍
@@SamDansCouch Thanks so much for your quick response! I assume that if I use the app and subsequently want to redo the calibration using your video, I'll still be able to do that, right? Thanks again for doing the work to help the rest of us!
@@mschooler No problem. I’m happy I can share my findings with you. I sure know I drove my family crazy with it, haha 😂 Yes just start slow, use the app and you can always go further with it later when you have the time for it. Nothing is a must, our hobby is there for us to enjoy and not stress over it 😎👍
@@SamDansCouch Can I ask one more question about the RZ50, since nobody even at Onkyo seems able to explain this to me? I have a 5.1 system (4 ceiling speakers, center speaker, and sub). I watch streamed movies and listen to streamed music (and my grandkids play games on the XBox). My question is how do I set the listening mode in order to get the receiver to automatically switch to whatever format is being delivered -- giving me 5.1 surround sound when the source is surround, stereo when the source is stereo? If I use "Direct," as I used to with my old receiver, that will cancel the room correction from Dirac. If I set to Dolby Surround ("DSurr"), that seems to provide surround from TV and streaming music whether or not the source is encoded with surround. Is there an obvious default setting that I should use? Would "Multichannel" work? The manual is very confusing, and your videos are very clear, so I'm hoping you can provide an easy answer that I'm missing.
@@mschooler Yes auto swtich between stereo and multi channel is definitely possible and you should leave DiracLive activated at all times since it also works for stereo. I am not a fan of the “Direct” setting because like you said, the room correction goes out the window. I am using the auto switch channel with my Apple TV. Movies get routed through in Dolby Atmos and when I play a streaming song in stereo - the RZ50 switches to stereo mode. Keep in mind that the RZ50 remembers the output mode per input. So if you have one of your inputs set to something like “movies” it will remember it. Get your remote and hit the “Q” button. Check Audio-> Stereo Assign for FRONT (if you want stereo in your two main speakers). Get out of the menu and hit the “music” button and switch it to stereo. Now Atmos/Surround should still come through and stereo sources will be played back just in stereo. Hit the “i” at any time during playback to check the output mode. I hope this helps. You are right that this is a little confusing, especially since the “movie, music, game” buttons are not shown on screen until you hit one of them and then you need to cycle through the different modes. But having it on stereo should work with your desired usage 😎
Hi RGB! It worked out of the box for me. Every device that gets routed through the Onkyo per HDMI should be able to show you the on screen display EXCEPT when you do eARC (The TV sending audio to the receiver instead) then you won’t get on screen display since you see the signal from the TV not the signal from the onkyo. In that case you can use the onkyo app which shows the current settings of your receiver.
@@SamDansCouch That makes sense. So should i not use eARC in from TV to eARC from AVR then? and assign TV hdmi to another hdmi input from AVR? how do you get the onkyo app? Thanks a ton! your videos has helped me set up my Onkyo very easily! thanks agian.
@@arielrodriguez6980 that’s usually the first impression. It’s usually that you had way too much bass before and it sounds wrong to you now, which it did to me too. You can slow up the volume of the sub and if it’s not enough raise the curve of the lower frequencies a bit to your own liking. Keep comparing it with music you know best and movies. In the end the personal taste counts 😊
I have a TX-RZ50. My Dirac Live experience was in short, terrible. I used the laptop and mobile app. It would NOT WORK. It would either say that the S/N was either too LOW or too HIGH. With multiple iterations - it would not work. I gave up after 4 or 5 attempts and just used the built in ONKYO app. Very annoyed that this did not work. Watched multiple videos on calibration and I could not replicate a positive result. Disgusted and annoyed. The RZ50 otherwise is a very good solution, albeit a little slow in HDMI switching between TV and GAME inputs - it does hang up a little sometimes so that I have keep pushing the input on the remote etc. while using CEC connections. It will go TO game console HDMI inputs fine. Returning to TV can be very frustrating though. I have a two year old beautiful 77" LG OLED.
Hello Neal! Thank you for your feedback! And I do understand your frustration. When I first started doing this I had the same issues. These days I can make a new measurement in around an hour and the volume is no problem any more. What really helped me was going the UMIK-1 mic route and following the volume settings from mehlau. I can't stress enough how important it is to follow this guide for the volume settings: mehlau.net/audio/dirac-live-2-mic-speaker-levels/
Hi thanks for this detail steps. I have an issue on exporting the filter. It shows “an error with code 1003 (device internal error) occurred when initialising the filter export). Im on dirac live 3.6.5 . What is the cause for this? Im using window 11
Hi tinhwee30! I’m sorry you are having issues with the filter export. I never had issues but I did hear from other owners having the same problem. Some people could fix it by deactivating CEC but the ultimate fix is factory resetting the RZ50. The filter settings should still stay saved on your computer (if you used a computer for Dirac live) so you can try to Re upload the filters. I hope you get it fixed quickly. I’m keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏻
@@SamDansCouch Great tip. Will test that out. Also found out there is a new beta version of Dirac Live out (3.6.7) with this as a fix: "Fixed a problem where the export to Onkyo/Integra/Pioneer in some cases cause a "filter transmission Error 1003"" Maybe this can work! Will report back tomorrow when I test it out!
thanks for the great video. im planning to do a 7.1.4 setup. not sure where to connect the ceiling rear speakers at the back of the receiver. should I use zone 2? my other question is can I connect a CAMBRIDGE AUDIO amp to the pre out of the RZ50 for my front LR speakers to give this channel more power and save the RZ50 power for all the remaining speakers?
You need to use an external amp for the rear surrounds in a 7.1.4. So you can't just buy one for the front L and R. I made that mistake and it cost me a couple of hundred dollars getting it changed from an Emotiva BasX2 to a Basx4.
I'm so frustrated. Idk what is happening. I plug the onkyo mic, press start, have dirac app find the receiver and went through the process of calibration. Then it takes me to filter design I keep it as is and saves. I unplug the mic and turn on dirac at the receiver and no sound. I switch dirac off and there is a pop and receiver cycles through protection then pops again and turns off. With dirac there is a pop and receiver turns off and starts protection mode
@@arielstereo5484 I’m sorry you are having this issue. It sounds like you did everything correctly. Once the filter is exported to your RZ50 it should instantly work. That popping noise doesn’t sound good. Never happened to me and I’ve done it many times with different speakers, mics and software versions. If this problem persists you might want to contact your reseller for a warranty exchange. 😔
Hi Kishan, it is not easy these days with the chip shortage to get your hand on stuff just like the PS5. I see the RZ50 pop up on the online store of Onkyo every couple of weeks. I got mine from the company AVscience who were also very fair with pricing and shipping was around a month. I hope you can catch an order soon. The RZ50 is a fun receiver to own. I keep my fingers crossed for you! 🤞🏻
@@SamDansCouch Hi good day sir, i like much this avr but I'm worried regarding the heat/hot issue of onkyo avr that's why they didn't last long time. is this rz50 running too hot? or just running normal with a little bit hot? Because i want to use the avr for more than 10 years. Your reply/advise is highly appreciated. Thank you.
@@marconista5390 Hi Emeliano! The RZ50 runs very nice and cool in my setup. You can watch my other video on this channel where I reviewed the RZ50. Leave a little room above the AVR like my setup and you won’t have any problems. The fan doesn’t even turn on inside my RZ50 while I’m using it. Runs nice and cool 😎
@@arielrodriguez6980 anything you change in Dirac and then transfer it back to the receiver is going to reset any changed you made inside the receiver. I always take pictures of all my settings to have a quick way to put the numbers back in.
@@SamDansCouch You did, my apologies. I forget because I get caught up with some saying you should not change a thing other than the curve or the dirac calibration is no longer calibrated to dirac standards. A lot of back on forth with this hobby.
@@arielrodriguez6980 no worries 😊It really is a lot to grasp but definitely worth it. I just did it myself again a few days ago. Eventually it’s not as hard as it looks in the beginning. If you need more base you can try the curves or just give a few more db volume to the subwoofer after Dirac calibration.
Hi Muhammad! The mic that comes with the RZ50 needs to be plugged into the receiver to work. If you want to use a mic on the laptop you’ll need to get an extra microphone for your computer like the one from miniDSP.
What speakers are you using? Only those small speakers on the wall for your front? How can they reproduce something in the 20hz range? I think you should also be careful not adding to much boost for certain speakers.
Hi AVgeek, thank you for your input! I really appreciate it. I am using an unusual speaker setup. It's a surround sound speaker system from Bose, that of course the audio community usually frowns upon, so I am not talking too much about it in my video. How it works is that all speakers are set to full size and all the speakers run through the subwoofer, which then "decides" where the transition happens. So the subwoofer does take over the missing frequencies of the satellite speakers. And since the subwoofer "knows" by factory settings, what the small speakers can or cannot reproduce, the sub takes over. That all happens outside of the receiver so I can not control that part directly. I contacted DIRAC about my unusual speakers but they confirmed that DIRAC still works with this setup. And most of it all: It did enhance my sound quality tremendously. Of course the better your speakers are the better the room correction. It was a big jump in quality for me though. And I did boost my bass a lot, I was thinking going "only" with +6db but for my room the bigger boost sounds best in my opinion. Especially for movies and games. My room is open and complex. I'll probably continue playing more with my settings, because you are never really done when you are setting up audio stuff 😊 Thank you again for your input. Exchanging experience and discussions are a great way to learn and understand things like these together better 😊👍
@@SamDansCouch Sounds good! I’ve heard Bose speakers but never used them in my own setup. Thanks for the explanation and I’m happy you could improve your sound with Dirac live. I personally love it and will probably only use Dirac live in the future as well. As you say there’s many ways of elaborate within the program as of the curves and also microphone placement. If you haven’t, place the mic 20-30 cm outside from the couch if possible. Dirac recommends it and it improved my bass response enormously so now I’m enjoying a modified Harman +6db curves. Sounds great! :)
@@avgeek8810 Great! I will try that. I am glad that you are having good results with DIRAC as well! I will re do the whole measuring process again in the near future and drive my wife insane haha! DIRAC released a software update around two weeks ago and made changes to how curves are handled a little differently plus much smaller files size for projects. My project size went from over 800MB to only 110MB. Definitely worth checking out too :)
I found that if you set the right side of the curtain to 500Hz it sounds much better and doesn't rob the speakers of their soundstage. tbh A lot of audiophiles recommend lower but my room sucks and below that the graph is all over the place whereas above that it's relatively smooth so basically you don't want to kill those high frequencies.
Hi John, thank you for sharing your experience. Yes, it comes down to how your room sounds. In theory it is desired to have all frequencies towards the 0 DB mark to have all frequencies as even as possible. But personal taste plays a big role in all this too, like how I bumped up my bass for more cinema feeling. That's why its great that Dirac Live lets you change so many aspects of the filter design yourself.
The reason they say not to go above 500hz is because of off axis response may be negatively impacted by the correction. It depends on your speakers’ off axis response. I have narrow dispersion JBL 590s, and I still highly prefer Dirac’s full bandwidth correction. My REW measurements show the improvement as well.
Hello mate How can you change curves at 50hz when only dirac bass control let's you go down to that frequency,? Or will normal dirac live let me change them at low frequency as well? Cheers
Are any of your volume setting inside the receiver too far spread out? They should not be like one speaker at +5db and another at -15db. Try lowering the subwoofer volume of the subwoofer itself. It should not short the receiver like this. If everything fails I’d definitely contact Onkyo if there is a hardware defect present. I did it many many times on my RZ50 and never experienced this. I hope you can get it all fixed. 👍
please. I have one question. I have the receiver model, but, my digital sound level.metet doesn't have cable to attach on the receiver, is possible make the room correction, or I need buy o e with cable. Thank you for the attention and have a nice day
Hi Jose! Do you mean an SPL meter? That doesn’t need to be connected to your receiver. Only the microphone which comes with the RZ50 needs to be plugged in. Hold the SPL meter at ears height and adjust the volume level of each speaker. And give the sub and the center a few db extra for more clarity 😎
I highly doubt most people have full range speakers, a good starting point would be to set everything to 80Hz except your subwoofer. I also advice to not go past the curtain points and if you do don’t go higher than 1Khz
The explanation is great than you. I had many questions over the setup regarding mic gain and master volume. Good to know the order. Mic gain on low, master volume low, play each speaker and set at a close level from each other and then go up on the master volume to the normal listening level to begin calibration, yes?
@@SamDansCouch One question I have. Since I do not have a tablet only a desktop can I calibrate the system using the Onkyo mic connected to the avr even if the desktop is in a different room than my Onkyo?
yes that’s no problem since the computer gets the info over your (wifi)network. It’s even better to leave the room when the calibration runs so your own body doesn’t alter the sound waves 😎
Hi George! No I don't think you can, it didn't work for me either in my test. The slots function as in: All slots same speaker number but with the option for different curve settings.
I own the RZ50. The Dirac calibration was a complete failure (becuz of Onkyo mic?). Not to be a total cheapskate but is there an alternate recommendation for a calibration microphone (to the UMIK-1) that doesn't cost $130???? Tried Ebay and was still pretty expen$ive. Thanks.
Hi Neal 👋DiracLive can be touchy and you really need to take some time with it. I understand the frustration. The results are very good in the end though so it's worth the trouble. I did make a video on this channel comparing the Onkyo mic with the UMIK-1 and while the UMIK-1 puts the icing on the cake and is more sensitive, you can get good results with the Onkyo supplied mic too. What throws off the measuring is usually background noises, even ones that you don't necessarily hear by your own ear. So I would try to find a good time of the day to measure and also play with the volume sliders for each speaker to make them all at the same volume before the actual test tone measurements. You really want to avoid the clipping which can take some time to avoid by adjusting each speaker volume, especially the sub which I'd turn down for the measurement a bit. I hope you can get it to work. Don't stress yourself out and you can always come back to it later 👍
I have a problem I exported the filter to my onkyo7100 but when I go to check speaker levels no matter what I do up or down the sound doesn't change and I can't balance the levels to 75db anyone know why? PLEASE HELP!
has anyone else had a transmission error 1003 when trying to save your dirac file to one of your 3 slots on your rz50, when i look up that error code it says its a mac/ios error code but im using windows?
Hi Brian! Do you use the latest version of the app? I heard from some people having this issue running an older version of the software and updating helped them. Other than that maybe try rebooting your router and onkyo might work too. I’m actually using the Mac version and haven’t gotten this error so far.
What is DIRAC? I have an older Onkyo unit and need an Amplifier. Would this amp be compatible with my system and speakers?
@@marciahoey3542 DIRAC is a digital room correction to make your speakers sound as good as possible in your specific room. It gets rid of too much base or highs. It works really well, even with older or not so high end speakers. You can use your old Onkyo as an extra amp, but the RZ50 will have to be the central hub for DIRAC to work.
How did you toggle Dirac on and off.

I just got mine, but I don't have banana plugs on my receiver. Feeling short changed.
@191snapper Wow that seems pretty incredible...
Speaker outs or preouts? What country model?
This was so helpful. Thank you so much. The one thing I discovered, by doing some additional research, is when doing the speaker level adjustments after the Dirac filter has been transferred to the receiver you should use an external source, like a test disc. The internal test tones bypass the DIRAC calibrations so it wont be as accurate as using an external source.
Hello Rich! Thank you for the tipp, that is good to know!
Where do you get this test disc at?
@@sg1ds919hello 👋 No disc. I’m using the built in test function from my AV receiver 😊

My RZ50 should be arriving soon. This looks pretty daunting even with the great explanation.
Super useful and informative video 👍🏼
Thank you! I am glad I could help out 😎
Perfect. Just what I was looking for!

Coming from Marantz Audyssey, this looks intimidating, but I'll follow your tips. I have no doubt the results will be great! Danke!
Hello bootneylee9802 ! Kein Problem 🙂 DiracLive is taking your sound to the next level. Just take your time with it and it will be rewarded 😎
Wow, lot of work! I’m planning to get RZ50 and this video helps! Thank You!
Thank you for an excellent tutorial!!!!! I am seriously considering making the RZ50 my next AV receiver!!! I'm going to watch your review of the RZ50 after this video.
Thank you Keith. I’m glad I can help 😊 I’m planning more RZ50 content in the near future too.
@@SamDansCouch Cool!!!
This video is a great help!! TY Sam Couch. Many blessings to you on this new year
Thank you C Q! I’m happy I could help. Have a happy new year as well 😊

Dirac is the Gamechanger we need! I use it before I watch anything….
Hi Michael! It really is, it made my speakers sound so much better and I wouldn‘t want to miss it. I have my RZ50 in use daily and love it.
@@SamDansCouch I ordered the RZ50 and am waiting patiently for it. Can’t wait. I’ve always had Sony ES receivers as my uncle worked for them and got us a nice discount. So this is my first non Sony. Do you have any negatives about the RZ50?
Great video man. Super helpful 👌
Thank you Anthony! 😊👍
I have the Onkyo RZ50 as well after finishing dirac live setup could I still go back and adjust the speaker levels/ crossovers manually and make sure there correct at 75db and my subwoofer around 80db
Hello 👋 yes you can change all these parameters. Just not the distance settings which Dirac takes its own measurement of.
To better understand Dirac. Once it is calibrated is it already on with the RZ50 if it says Dirac ON or I still need to go to EQ to use what was calibrated?
Yes that’s right. Else you wouldn’t be even able to select it. No EQ required 👍
Gentlemen how is the amplifier section of the Onkyo receiver is it good quality fir stereo 2 channel critical listing too
Hello anandshah71!
Wonderful mate...
At the beginning of the video is the Master output & Mic gain set to an arbitrary low setting &
what determines raising the Master output vs mic gain ?
Thanks for the video, perfect timing my rz50 is coming next week.
Hi Glenn, that's exciting news that you'll get your RZ50 soon! I hope you'll have a lot of fun with it and I'm glad if my findings can help you setting it up.

What volume should i put my original pb 1000 and my pb 2000 pro when doing Dirac live?
CEC in my cases always does the opposite of what it should be doing, so I have it off.
when using the SPL meter how do I find the test tone in the Onkyo receiver to use to set the SPL setting? Thanks great video.
Hi Dr. Alan! Thank you for watching my video 😊 Press the gear button on the remote and go to the menu point number 2 “speaker”. There select 4. “Level Calibration”. The test tone will start after 5 seconds.
@@SamDansCouch perfect!
You are offering me this solution as I understand it:
1. MAster volume and mic gain set to 0
2. move mic gan to - well, I had it at 97% and got an error, but ok now set it to 90% and see what is the noise level of the floor, e.g. -60dB - (I read that -50 or slightly below is optimal)
3. move the master volume to make the speaker level bł 20dB so I stop the master volume at -40dB
4. check all speakers
5. I look for the quietest one
6. i should adjust this speaker to -40dB either mic gain or master volue - ????
7. adjust the rest of the speakers with their sliders to about the same level
8. the sub is at 0 all the time on its knob
9. assume I have the levels set - then now I should go up with master volume? To what value. I'm worried about the speaker (I know personally of a case where a friend calibrated the volume too high and damaged the speaker)
Do I understand this correctly and should I do it this way?
Hi thanks for the in-depth guide, once I create a dirac curve the Onkyo controller app won't let me access it to edit, is this a known issue?
Great Job!!!! Thank you very much
Thank you Jack. I’m glad I can help out ☺️
QUICK QUESTION: I’d like to create TWO different and separate DIRAC calibrations for two different SPEAKER CONFIGURATIONS - One in 2.1 Channel and One in a MultiChannel Speaker Configuration (probably 7.1.2)
When I switch my speaker configuration from 2.1 to anything else my DIRAC calibrations are obviously deleted. (I switch between 2.1 and 7.1.2)
I haven’t found a way to do that with the mobile app on my phone but I’m hoping that’s possible to save presets/calibrations with my laptop in multiple speaker configurations?
@@SamDansCouch thank you so much for the answer. I’ll try that
@@SamDansCouchthere is another tutorial by “audio” something that I saw that talks about how to pre set your speakers before using Dirac or you may end up hearing clicks or pops in your speakers
@@SamDansCouch Wow thank you so much. Have a great day!
Hello sir, could you add some bass through the avr settings without going through the dirac app if needed?
Hello 👋Yes you can add extra bass. It even has a designated button on the remote for that.
Hello sbs! That is the good thing about Onkyo, the full license is included. So no extra fee is needed for the RZ50!
Many thanks for the kind confirmation.@@SamDansCouch
Do you any advise for music settings?
I personally like to keep it neutral so that the sound is as close as possible like the original mixer in the studio intended the movie/music to sound like 😊
@@SamDansCouch Thanks. I just got the avr and can see that I have a lot to learn.
@@tiredoldman5329No problem, take it step by step. It looks overwhelming at first but it’s not so bad once you play with it. The reward is absolutely great sound. Have fun with it 😎

What mic stand did u use ?
Hello 👋 I got the Amazon basic one. Cheap and gets the job done: Amazon Basics Adjustable Boom.
How much better is DLBC that cannot be applied with the RZ50?
Hello 👋 DLBC is a good add on but the regular DiracLive is already really good. Maybe in cases where you have a very difficult room and more than one sub it can make a greater difference. Else DL is more than enough 😊
I currently own the Integra DRX 5.4 and I have been in contact with Integra and they say you can. I’ll let you know once I get an official answer.
Oh that’s cool. Yes please let me know how it goes. 👍
@@SamDansCouch thanks how does the z50 stack up against the 3800h using kilo’s speakers which are bright
Hi Michael,
thank you for watching!

Hi Jose! No you only need to do the 17. It will encompass your entire couch, no worries 😊👍
Thank you very much for this detailled explanation, it helped me a lot!
Incidentally, what ist that movie playing at 10:43 ?
Hi dominikpfleghaar5091, thank you for your feedback. I’m glad I could help 😊 At 10:43 is a clip from the Netflix show “The Witcher” which has very cool surround sound scenes.
So anytime I run Dirac if I go back into speaker settings and change a crossover or level I need to go back to the Dirac slot to save the new setting?
@@arielrodriguez6980 once you transferred Dirac live to your AV receiver you can change things like speaker levels and crossover inside your receiver itself. It will save instantly. If you should transfer your Dirac settings from your computer /app again the internal settings will get overwritten and you’ll have to do the settings adjustments inside your receiver again.
I am planning to get a Onkyo TX-RZ50. Does it make sense to buy a Umik-1 for Dirac or is the mic which comes with the receiver good enough?
@@SamDansCouch Thank you for such a quick reply! Really appreciated! I'll give it a shot.
I just watched "A quiet place" which uses the surrounds and bass very well which was fun 😎👍
hi samdanscouch, just wondering where did you connect you 2 extra height channels ?
Hi Rohit! You connect your second height speaker pair to the speaker ports labeled on the back of the RZ50 as „Surround Back“ Left and Right.
Thank you for the video, when I try to transfer the filter to my RZ50 from my MacBook there’s a error code 1003 do you know how to fix it?
Hello! I’m glad my video helped. I’ve heard from some DiracLive users having the same issue like you. Try to download the latest version of DiracLive (3.6.7). It helped many to get rid of this error message. I hope this helps 👍
I’ll try tonight, thanks.
For the 17 measurements with the circles above the listener on the dirac app does this mean to place the mic up high above ear level in those areas?
@@arielrodriguez6980 yes that’s correct
Why? Your ears are never that high ?
Hello I have the Onkyo TX-NR7100 Direct Live Software does not recognize the Onkyo. There are no devices available Where is the mistake?
Hello Mr Steel M! Make sure you have the latest version of the Dirac software, they release updates quite often. Also make sure that your Onkyo and your phone/computer are on the same network with an active internet connection. And if it all fails unplug your Onkyo, wait a minute and re plug the power back in. You can also check out this guide: confluence.dirac.services/display/DLS/Troubleshooting%3A+No+Devices+Found
Thank you
Do you recommend Umik-1 for Dirac setup vs. the one included with RZ50? Is there a large difference in results with each mic?
Hello TheRdawg16, I personally think the supplied microphone is enough and detects the range of frequencies needed for the room correction. I'm very happy with my results & I'm using the supplied mic 😊👍
EXCELLENT !!!!
But having it on stereo should work with your desired usage 😎
why can't i adjust the gain of each channel individually?
How did you make the quick display show up on the tv? Mines doesn't show up in the tv.
I did the 3 step quick Dirac setup just to see how it is the simple way using the Onkyo app, and the sound is neutered, bass and all.
@@SamDansCouch I think also with the Dirac on the pc and full measurements it will be much better than my quick one.
Exact same problem here. Tried factory reset, deactivating CEC, software on Windows and Mac. No luck so far unfortunately.
Hi @@nic3939, im sorry you are having this issues too. Did you try this solution? shorturl.at/yFKR1
@@SamDansCouch Great tip. Will test that out. Also found out there is a new beta version of Dirac Live out (3.6.7) with this as a fix:
"Fixed a problem where the export to Onkyo/Integra/Pioneer in some cases cause a "filter transmission Error 1003""
Maybe this can work! Will report back tomorrow when I test it out!
@@nic3939 Great, yes please report back. I hope this is the fix 😊
thanks for the great video. im planning to do a 7.1.4 setup. not sure where to connect the ceiling rear speakers at the back of the receiver. should I use zone 2? my other question is can I connect a CAMBRIDGE AUDIO amp to the pre out of the RZ50 for my front LR speakers to give this channel more power and save the RZ50 power for all the remaining speakers?
You need to use an external amp for the rear surrounds in a 7.1.4. So you can't just buy one for the front L and R. I made that mistake and it cost me a couple of hundred dollars getting it changed from an Emotiva BasX2 to a Basx4.
@@John-ok8ts thank you for sharing, that was very helpful. I will factor that in before my purchase.
Can you go back and change the trim after dirac or will doing so undo the setup?
@@arielrodriguez6980 anything you change in Dirac and then transfer it back to the receiver is going to reset any changed you made inside the receiver. I always take pictures of all my settings to have a quick way to put the numbers back in.
@@SamDansCouch Have you tried Harmon curves?
@@arielrodriguez6980 yes, I’m talking about it in this video.
Can we connect mic with the laptop for dirac live configuration?
@@andrewskaterrr My new Bronze Audio 100s also excel by applying Dirac live for the full bandwidth. Very happy with it 😎👍
@@andrewskaterrr I have Kefs which I believe have a wide off axis response so would that be the reason I think it's best to set it at 500?

Why is it that in the app, it has measurements for next to the TV but the pc software does not?
hello, just want to ask if is it possible to copy your filter in dirac?😅
The moment I toggle dirac on/ off the speakers pop loudly and receiver shuts. What's happening?
Are any of your volume setting inside the receiver too far spread out? They should not be like one speaker at +5db and another at -15db. Try lowering the subwoofer volume of the subwoofer itself. It should not short the receiver like this. If everything fails I’d definitely contact Onkyo if there is a hardware defect present. I did it many many times on my RZ50 and never experienced this. I hope you can get it all fixed. 👍

@@SamDansCouch thank you !! You are very nice !!
@@arielrodriguez6980 yes 👍😊
@@SamDansCouch One question I have. Since I do not have a tablet only a desktop can I calibrate the system using the Onkyo mic connected to the avr even if the desktop is in a different room than my Onkyo?
yes that’s no problem since the computer gets the info over your (wifi)network. It’s even better to leave the room when the calibration runs so your own body doesn’t alter the sound waves 😎
Are you able to save a 2.1 and a multichannel setup on different slots? Dirac would not allow.
