BMW's breakthrough car in the United States was its BMW 2002, that redefined performance and handling. The 2002 started an era of performance minded cars and led to the creation of many performance variants. If you're a fan of BMW M cars like the M3, M5, and later editions, like the M2, M4, and M8 can you can thank BMW's rich racing history and Motorsports activity for their inspiration.

Thanks Isabel and Team Petersen .. that was FANTASTIC .. love the 507s .. that first one looks like it may have been Elvis's car .. certainly its doppelganger !!! Love Beemers .. drove an E30 3 series for years .. my Dad still drives it .. it's been in the family since new .. and one of my Dad's friends had a 2002 I've been in, though I never got to drive it .. in that very distinctive yellow .. what a classic .. now that we've just seen this video maybe one might just 'turn up' at the next Petersen Cars & Coffee !!! Sure hope so .. 😉 .. 'til next we meet, take care everyone !!! 😄 .. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 ... P. S. Just looked it up, the 507 I mean .. well, it's not Elvis's 507 .. though his one did actually appear in a film in the 50's, called Hula Hopp Conny !!! It was also owned by Hans Stuck before Elvis .. and when Elvis had it he had it repainted red .. so all the messages from the girls written in 💄 wouldn't be so obvious !!! 😅 So gorgeous those 507s !!! That 2002 was in Golf, paint code 70 (looked that up too, though I'm sure some of you knew that off the top of your head!), and now I think of it I did get to have a drive .. thank you Lionel !!! 😄
I bought a BMW 2002 A/T in 1972. It had a top speed of 190km/h. Although it had a 2litre 4 cylinder engine it performed like a six cylinder. One of the most exciting car I owned apart from the 1964 Porsche 364 C, which was the last model of the 364 series.

Cool little brief history
One of the cars I owned in my twenties was 1976, 2002. I got it from a mechanic for $8k. Sliver with a black interior. He had made some upgrades to the car, including a dual Webber carburetor, Bilstein shocks, and Panasport rims. I loved that care. It was a joy to drive. I owned the car for five years and is one of the only cars I regret selling. I sold it for $10k. Not a bad investment at the time.

I had a '66 BMW 1600 Coupe, one of the predecessors of the 2002. I was stationed in Europe, and they made an 1802 4 door Sedan before the 2002. The 1600 was a great car, I paid $100 for it in '74 and broke the speedometer test driving it on the Autobahn in 3rd gear !! It was built like a fine watch, had a great shifter and was a pleasure to drive. A friend in SoCal had a nice 2002tii and I pleaded with him to sell it to me but to no avail. Thanks for the video !!

Great BMW history lesson! Didn't know that the blue and white on emblem signifies Bavarian skies. I'm driving my 2nd X5 that I purchased in 2012 and has close to 110k miles with lots of CA. coastal driving. My first one I had for 10 years. I have seen a few orange 2002's in orange and in pristine condition here in LA and 1 in San Diego. They're classic! Thank you!
