1967 BMW 1600: A Bimmer Named Derby

  • Besides being one of the most roundly loved BMW platforms, the 02 series is commonly credited with defining the brand as a maker of well-engineered but practical cars that were more engaging to drive than their price points. Across the wide range of 02s, one is easily drawn to the higher performance tii and Turbo models, but the joys of classic BMW motoring are not limited by horsepower. In the case of Lisa, the owner of this gorgeous 1967 BMW 1600-2, the 84hp four-pot is plenty of power for the task.
She loves driving “Derby,” but finds at least as much enjoyment in finding a scenic place to park and relax with a good book and the company of a vehicle that helps balance a busy existence. In other words, driving a slow car fast will always be fun, but there’s a unique pleasure to be had in cutting all the hurry out of your day, if only for a short cruise at a time. Hi everyone! Lisa here. Thank you so much for watching Derby's video. Can't thank Petrolicious enough for putting out content that's "tastefully" done for us car enthusiasts! I would like to thank the videographer Sean Fannin who came out to shoot Derby in such a creative way! I would also like to thank Bay Area local Jim Huff who had an quick cameo appearance in this video with his 4 door 1600 Neue Klasse BMW. You can catch his petrolicious video called "the Grey Ghost" also on Petrolicious. My car enthusiast friends are all one of a kind and I enjoy seeing them at car events and just driving around on the roads! As mentioned in the video, appreciating cars are in our blood and we all speak the same language. Take care out there and drive tastefully!

As you put it at the end of the video, it may look as we here in Europe like to trash our own cars.... Anyway, very well done, my Lady, I couldn't agree more with you about everything (my daily drive is a 1976 pastellblau 316 e21). Only difference, I do not wear gloves because I love to touch the bakelite steering wheel, it reminds me of my dad's cars, some 45 years ago!!!! Keep it up (and hope Tesoro is still there;-)

These are the types of videos that Petrolicious does the best. Seemingly average people restoring and using average cars to live with for what may seem a lifetime. Great stuff.

      Amen man!
I'm from germany and my grandfather used to drive a lot of those BMW's and other small cars like NSU TT, NSU Prinz or the old Fiat 500.
I think that was the most glorious time of the automobile. Small cars, but tons of fun :)

True. Bud sadly they do not do these videos anymore. I rather sadly unsubscribed a few weeks ago. No videos of passionate owners showing their vehicles with great footage, only a presenter, presenting a borrowed car. Not a generally bad concept, but covered extensively by others, Petrolicious was different.

This is my favorite kind of owner- one that knows and respects their car enough to genuinely care for it, and one that sees the historical importance of keeping it original. I refuse to do any modifications to my 2007 Charger, even though it could use many just to keep it driveable. It breaks down on me quite a bit, but Lord knows it'll be in my garage as an old man.

@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo Many newer luxury cars are (with the exception of specifically made performance models) because people want a higher end car car to isolate them from the noise, vibration, and temperature of the road and the car itself. It ends up making for a bland driving experience to enthusiasts. I like my '08 W204 C300, especially on longer drives, but I absolutely LOVE my '74 W115 240D because it has character and it engages the driver.

Wünderbar Lisa. I convinced my wife back around 1986 that we needed this yellow 1968 1602 that was being sold by a Portuguese gentleman who came down from then Rhodesia to South Africa. R 3000 rand later she was in service transporting me to work to Bedfordview Primary School. My 1st teaching post in a trendy up market suburb that i taught physical education and English. Being a primary school the students were 13 years old max. I was always last to arrive and the pupils would run after me as i parked her just a minute before the school bell. The kids found the car remarkably fun , as it was the oldest and not in the status ranking of their parents daily posh cars. For 2 years they delighted the arrival and always just in time yellow flying machine. Today it's parked in my storage waiting for a bolt n nut restoration which I've delayed for decades. Have many offers to take her off my back but turned them all down. I may get to it and ship it off to my daughter in Denver California. Not sure that would be wise as it is right hand drive. ITS always fun and inspiring watching your videos. Keep up the good work and passion. Greetings from Johanesburg S.A.

One day I was on the bay bridge in the evening, heading towards SF and the cash lanes were packed and people were having trouble merging. Couple cars back I noticed a gorgeous white BMW 2002 tii was trying to merge, so I rolled down my window and waved him to come merge in front of me. When he got up next to me, I said Beautiful car and gave him 👍🏻👍🏻 and he said thank you! I let him merge in front of me and then when we got to the toll, he payed the $6 toll for me!! That literally made my day haha!

I had a 1967 1600-2 in Turf green; I bought it in 1972 and drove it daily until 1985. Named it Rolf. It had been imported to Massachusetts, then I bought it in Michigan and drove it through Ontario and Quebec through the mountains of Vt, NH and ME (awesome trip in that car). Then drove it cross-country when I moved back to CA - 75 to 85 mph all the way, humming along at 4500 to 5000 rpm all day long without a whimper (4.11 differential in those, so acceleration wasn't bad for the time). Used to drive it hard up Hwy 1 from SF to visit my brother in Gualala on the north coast, similar country to that in your video. Twisty 20 to 35 mph curves - perfect for that car - what a blast all the way, heel toe 3rd to 2nd, back up to 3rd, back down again, and so on! Kept it another 10 years but never had time to restore, so sold it to a guy from LA who really wanted it. I felt like it was going to a good home. Obviously your video brought back great memories - thanks Lisa!

When I learned to drive I was 18 years old, the legal age to learn to drive here in Switzerland. I learned to drive on a BMW 1602, it was such a good car to learn on, it was forgiving and strong enough. It was a 4 speed manual. I am 62 now and have had a VW Bug, a Citroën 2CV4, a Citroën GS 1200. Then I moved to the US and got myself a Renault 5 which I had to sell soon again, nobody was capable of making it run right at the time. So I got a Ford Grand Torino (1967) and that was just so much fun. then a Datsun, Isuzu Truck, then moved back to Switzerland again, got a Nissan, two European Fords, a few Mazdas and two Hondas. I've stuck to Hondas, they are the best and most reliable cars (for me at least), never something spectacular but I love them.
At the moment I own a Civic Type R and am feeling juvenile once again, life is so much fun and good :-), it goes like stink on the German Autobahn!
If I had the space and the time (I should once I retire) I'd then love to have a few of my old cars back again if possible. The 1602 would be one of them for sure, was a good car to drive.
Once again a very nice video, thanks so much for sharing!

Damn, gotta respect this gal man for being a true car enthusiast. That steering wheel is like a bus steering wheel. I'm into japanese cars myself. I have an orange 2015 Civic Si coupe, currently with 28K miles, that I pamper. But I'm in the hunt for a decent low-mileage CRX, which are hard to come by. There was a 1988 on auction with only 33K miles that sold for over $30K. Very hard to find, but I'm pretty determined.

Great story...Too bad video can't capture the smell of old cars like that. There is definitely a unique atmosphere and spirit to those older German cars.
