Unironically agree. That being said, to be complete as a musician, being able to play at least one of each foundational band instrument would probably be ideal. Drums, keys, some bass instrument, guitar/violin/mandolin or some stringed lead instrument.
Few can though, even some of the more extraordinary professional instrumentalists suck as amateur drummers, in my experience. Gilmore has quite a nice touch though.

Mr. Gilmour has been the greatest guitarist on the face of the earth my entire lifetime! I’m 45. It doesn’t surprise me that he can jump on a kit & do that too. He can replace the drummer but NOBODY can replace the guitarist! He is irreplaceable!
Not quite true as an amateur drummer of many years I can see that he stiff an not fluid and he would probably say the same, jamming is different from making a recording or doing a live gig. Having said that we have a guitar player in our band who can play drums a bit and I am the first to admit I can’t play guitar and I admire musicians who can play multiple instruments... not all at the same time 😂 David Gilmour is probably my number 1 favourite guitar player closely followed by Eric Clapton.

God. This man is so amazing. His sounds. The band as a whole all these years as well. Everything they've done has been a hit In my heart and soul. Inspired me many years. Atmospheric blues and rock of the soul. Freeing and like a feather that floats gracefully never seeing its land. Without care. Without negative ..only being peaceful. I bought a Mexican strat. It looks like his a special edition but not the black strat he had signed but the affordable like option I guess. I hope to get my own but similar effects to try and solo behind my music i write. Never words just music. I must find my winds to set that feather on its flight smiling without care comfortable and euphoric.

Yup he plays the piano/keyboards too, check out "out of the blue" live, from his solo "About Face" tour 😉 And he obviously also plays the bass, as he played most of the PF bass lines on the PF albums (not Roger)... 😈 He played the Sax on a track on his "On An Island" solo record, and tour. Also plays mandolin, and basically anything with strings attached... 😋

(Though I think he stays away from bowed instruments) He also played Hammond organ at Pink Floyd shows - the 1974 live recording of "Great Gig in the Sky" (Rick was already preoccupied with the piano part on that one).

I love the way he is all about the quality of what the listener experiences. And how he can continue to always make that as close to recordings as he can. check out ernie isley from isley brothers. hes the guitar player but he writes alot of the drum lines. footsteps in the dark for example, one of the most unique and recognizeable drum lines of all time

colin wright David Gilmore aside, none of them were especially talented instrumentalists in my opinion. But that's never been the appeal of Pink Floyd for me, it's always been the quality of their writing that set them apart.

Hmm, a talented man who can play sax and drums. There’s also a rumour he can play a couple of notes on a guitar too but of course he sticks to the simple chords. I still feel sad when I see Rick and it’s over 12 years since we lost him.
