Let's be fair to number one fan, and stop picking on him. Anyone who's brave enough to accept and admit he's not up to the task, or doesn't feel comfortable with it, is a lot braver than those who hide their fear and allow themselves to be egged on by the mob, only to come a cropper when they drop off a cliff. What is surprising, is how little erosion has occurred since this place was built. I wonder just far out the cliff face was, or how far in was the the gun loop. One thing is for certain, the structure wasn't built to stick out like that. On the contrary, it would have been well disguised, otherwise, Gerry would have taken one look and said "Let's go over there, Fritz, where there is no grosse machine waffen waiting to blow our kopfen off!". I saw among the graffiti, "Midgeley from Sheffield" - I wonder? And there was someone from Barmouth. It's worth remembering that all this would still have been pretty fresh in the 50's, and probably still accessible. It's possible that much of the graffiti would have been written by the sons, even daughters, of the men who were stationed there, a lot of whom no doubt recounted their memories of "When I was your age, I was sitting with a machine gun in cliff on the south coast, waiting for my chance of a crack at the Gerries". What better incentive could you want to go and visit the place where your dad, or even granddad, had been "doing his bit for Britain"?
just reflect - In june 1940 after dunkirk the british army had 960 field guns and tanks with 1 and 1/2 hrs worth of ammunition for the defence of britain - the army was stood to twice in sept 40 to expect invasion and the plans for final surrender which would take place in Worcester! (info to the best of my current knowledge!)
That is such a special feature in the cliff side. Who would have guessed they did that. Thanks for sharing your great content.
Those inscriptions are so special and the fact they’ve survived the weather and time.🙏🙏

Is Number One fan sponsored by Michelin?
If the walls where the graffiti is falling apart, then the bricks with the graffiti should be taken down and preserved in a museum
