If we're talking about fan games that feel official, Sonic Robo Blast 2 is definitely worth a mention. A 3D sonic game in development since 1998 made entirely in the DOOM ENGINE. It's gameplay feels much closer to the original 2D games but translated into 3D flawlessly. It genuinely feels like a game from an alternate dimension where Sega chose to stick with the classic formula when bringing Sonic into 3D. It also has an insanely talented modding community, but even unmodded the game is a masterpiece. And on top of all of that, it's STILL IN DEVELOPMENT.
And specifically SRB2Kart, the kart racer spinoff off of that game. It's really great, both in singleplayer (time attacks only, but still fun), splitscreen and online multiplayer lol
@@Architector_4 Shoutout also to Ring Racers, SRB2Kart successor, it adds a few new mechanics to differenciate from SRB2Kart and Mario Kart, and some people don't really like them but in my opnion it's a great game with a far better singlerplayer mode (it has cpu players and cups, not only time attack)
@@bro-dude99 Nobody is saying tragedy has no place in fiction. The problem is when you don't have the narrative chops to tell a meaningful story about tragedy, and you're not going to find that in a SNES ROM hack where Samus has a miscarriage then spends a few hours doing exploratory platform shooting. Besides which, that's basically Other M with extra steps, and that was a story written by adult professionals which still fell horribly flat.
Power Bomberman is the best example of this I've seen, extremely polished PC port of Bomberman with online play up to 12 players and massive customization options including items, levels, and characters from every Bomberman game and beyond. Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R) is a Zero Mission style remake with tons of new content, a lot of people like it more than the official 3DS remake. There's also a fan remake of Zelda 2 that sounds really good, although I haven't played it yet. Speaking of Zelda... There's a good amount of high-quality Zelda fan-games on the Zelda Classic engine (found on the PureZC website). My favorite is Link and Zelda: Panoply of Calatia, a direct sequel to Zelda 2 where Link's homeland (from the comic books) is attacked by Militron (from Faces of Evil), and both Link and Zelda set out to save it. It has both Z1 top-down and Z2 side-view areas, a Portrait of Ruin style partner system with simultaneous control of Link and Zelda, and close to 100 different items taken from every Zelda game ever made. Each dungeon has 3 items and includes clever puzzles requiring all 3 of them, there's lots of secrets everywhere, just top-notch game design all the way through. As for ROM hacks, Super Metroid: Ascent is better than Hyper Metroid, especially after the first part. Extra Mario Bros. somehow makes a solid metroidvania with minimal changes to the SMB1 game engine (it still only scrolls right). Mario Adventure 3 just came out a month or two ago and is incredible, easily on par with 3Mix if not better.
Seeing Mega Man Deathmatch reminded me of another game I used to play with my friends: Mega Man Arena, which has the same Mega Man pvp concept but instead uses the same 2D platform jump-and-shoot gameplay of the original. But it still lets you play as multiple different characters and robot masters, and each one has their own unique moves. Definitely not very balanced, but still fun.
Anyone mentioned Black Mesa yet? It's Half-Life 1, a 1998 game, remade entirely by fans into a modern fleshed out adventure shooter on a reasonably modern engine. It's really fantastic stuff, to the point where Valve, creators of Half-Life 1, let them make it a sold game on their Steam platform alongside the original lol
I think the fact that it became "official" in some capacity (by Valve giving the project not only their blessing, but full permission to monetize it AND access to the engine's full source code so the project could go beyond the limitations of the publicly-available version of the engine) makes it unfit for this list, as much as I love the game and think it deserves more recognition.
Black Mesa definitely started as a fan game, but since Valve basically let the team behind it not only finish it but put it up on Steam for sale it can be argued that it’s technically an official game in terms of its final release.

For any Pokémon and spooky game fans, check out The Old Chateau! It’s a great fan made game where you’re navigating the building trying to find keys to get out while steering clear of the Haunter, it’s been a fun one to check out this spooky season! 👻
Dang, no mention of Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers? You should check it out! Not just one of the best sonic fangames I ever played, but one of the best kart games, period.
I was actually kind of disappointed to not see ring racers or at least srb2 In this list. I feel like you can't just talk about 8-bit deathmatch without giving mention to other doom engine fan games.
Another great selection of interesting projects, will definitely check a few of these out. Really enjoy your channel and am especially a fan of this series, as I don't see many other traditional gaming channels cover this space.
As usual, some things I'd heard of here and others I hadn't. Thanks for bringing more attention to quality fan-works! You know, I completely forgot Hyper Metroid had a story at all? It's easy enough to skip past and ignore, then just enjoy exploring a world in Super Metroid's amazing engine.
Resident Evil: During The Storm is a great one if you’re into the classic PS1 era RE games. It’s a total conversion of RE2 where you play as the protagonist of Outbreak and have to survive Raccoon City’s initial infestation while occasionally helping survivors (though not to the extend of RE Outbreak, more like how Ada or Carlos were handled in 2&3). Sadly unless something’s changed and I never heard, the game got cancelled but a good chunk of it is playable. Might be another one to consider, but idk if you’re counting unfinished games on these lists (makes sense not to, as there’s so many).
Great video, really enjoyed learning about that Zelda game!! If you're planning to make another video about fangames i recommend checking out Mega Man Arena, it's an extremely fun game.
I'm so glad to see MM8BDM here, one of the greatest fan games ever. I'd also add some others like Megaman Rock N' Roll Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit Sonic Robo Blast 2
Dunno if I can mention it here but I recommend the fangame Vinemon which is like a Pokemon type game but with a big chunk of originality thrown in and barely left Pokemon identity if not for the concept itself. From small QoL additions, over a complete in GBA soundfont oriented soundtrack, to online multiplayer options etc., it feels like a loveletter in a shitposting humour oriented but standalone sorta game that really has surprises left and right through and through!
I already tried out Dungeons of Infinity, and liked it very much, except for the ending, which turned a lot of people off, I heard. I do not know if it was fixed in later versions, though. Definitely checking out Star Fox 64 Survival! Great video, as usual
Oh hey, this was good timing - just saw you uploaded it lol Loved Takua 64! But I do feel the platforming got a little too technical towards the end of the game. Been enjoying your videos for the past month - keep up the good content :)
Another awesome video, I've really been enjoying this serries. That Pokemon fighting game looks really sick. Personally, I think the most underrated fan game is Terracraft by SkyBlueYoshi. It's a crossover between Terraria and Minecraft, and the engine was built from the ground up by the game's single developer. It combines the infinite world generation of Minecraft with the combat, exploration, and building styles of games like Terraria and Starbound. It's a really unique sandbox experience that I wish more people knew about.
Sonic project 06 is also another one that feels official. Currently it is still in development and doesnt feel as official as it is effectively trying to undo the bad parts of Sonic 06 However, the improved dynamic gameplay, faster load times, and smoother runtimes compared to the original, makes it feel official. You should check it out. Sonic, Shadow, and Silvers levels are all complete and the bosses and final stage are currently being worked on.
Not sure if it's a good idea to mention cause Nintendo ninjas might come your way, but there was a certain unofficial remake of Metroid 2 released a couple years ago that has been very well received. I enjoyed it very much. Surely, you will be able to find it :)
Love your videos highlighting fan projects, I have played a few on my steam deck. Don't want to be a stickler, but some of these feel official because they arent fan games, they are Romhacks(built off of the program or Rom of an official project). its still made by fans, but the difference should be pointed out
awesome video man, you should make more videos of that, and please show toadette strikes back, for me its the best fan game that i've played in my life :)
Not a fan of Zelda but Dungeons of Infinity looks pretty interesting, I'll check it out. As for another great Zelda fan game I recommend you to check The Legend of Princess. And as for Doom fan-games there are great Doom 2D (now developed as Doom 2D Forever) and DoomRL (renamed as DRL). Also don't forget AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) but I guess every Metroid fan knows about it.
Between the three titles of this I've watched so far, you've done just about every one I know -- Metroid Planets, Zelda Dungeons of Infinity, Megaman 8 Bit Death Match, Ring Racers, Megaman Rock & Roll... but you're lacking in RPGs. Fan game "Final Fantasy Renaissance" might help that gap -- it's a remake of FF1, but adds a number of additional classes (as of a couple days ago, the number increased to 12 additional base classes, bringing the total to 18 with the vanilla 6), as well as new treasures, spells, and equipment to accommodate the new classes, and a quest for *every* class (all 18 of them) for something above and beyond the vanilla options upon class upgrade.
There was another Pokemon fighting game that looked awesome, Pokemon Type Wild: ruclips.net/video/PcjGIaVRejk/видео.html When I first saw Close Combat I thought it was Type Wild, but I don't think the two are related.
You missed Hyper Dragonball z. That stuff may be at least amongst the top 3 2d Dragonball fighting games and that's a hard thing to achieve considering how good Dragonball games are
The whole point of this series is to highlight lesser known titles and hidden gems in the fangame space. AM2R is one of the most well known fangames of all time
Ngl, Hyper Metroid's plot is so bad that it devalues the entire game. Other M is art in comparison. And the color palette is quite weird. The game itself is cool though.
It really is, especially if you're a G1 Bionicle fan. The mod creator put in a ton of little fan service details, and if you get stuck, he also has a full Let's Play of the game on his channel.
They put it in the intro of their "More Fan Games That Could Pass as Official" video the same way Pokemon Close Combat was done in this one (shoutouts to Pokemon CC!)
I have to let you know the developer of Takua 64 is rather controversial. You can find info about this on the Mask of Destiny forums. Had to edit this comment because it disappears everytime I post it?? It's so frustrating
Okay, I just looked into it too and all I saw was a bunch of people bullying a kid because he pressed Like on a few Twitter posts that they disagreed with? I've been watching SuperStupidy's RUclips videos since I played Takua 64 three months ago, and none of his commentaries present or older have featured any of the "controversial" views he's being accused of holding. He also sounds like a young teenage kid, so maybe the adults on that moderation board should back up a bit and rethink their lives if they're going to treat a kid like that.
@@DargonhumanAfter seeing the Mask of Destiny post on SuperStupidy 2 years ago, I never saw evidence of what he said or did that reflected those findings. I need to bring this up for I have these feelings everytime I see something relating to Takua 64 in some way. Yes, I do not agree with or defend what SuperStupidy liked in the screenshots but if community members/moderators approached him and investigated weather he really does think this way the situation would have been handled differently. I understand why the mods felt the way they did while making the statement (a community member agreeing to not so cool stuff) but I can't help but feel the situation was over exaggerated. The controversy and gross reputation around Little Brotherhood Studio's (Bionicle channel) is justified regarding their backwards views and mentality being perfectly clear as evidenced in their videos on their channel. The controversy around SuperStupidy and Takua 64 (in the Bionicle community) seems to only be one small piece of a puzzle being blown up out of proportion. Again I am not defending SuperStupidy or the views that was shown in the Twitter screencaps on the MOD statement (Don't like those at all, ngl). I feel this whole situation should've been dealt with better.

Small edit: When I said "this situation seemed to be a small piece of a puzzle blown out of proportion" I meant that I felt there had to be more information to this and that the case was resolved too hastily; If that makes sense?
"The story was too edge lord for me" Dark writing is not being an edge lord. An edge lord is someone who, through their actions and spoken words (I.E. a person doing this in person, or via messaging) tries to "ride the EDGE" of what is acceptable, often pretending to be tougher, more emotional, etc, than they truly are... a faker. Writing a dark story for a rom hack is not being an edge lord, grow up.

Sonic Robo Blast 2
Dunno if I can mention it here but I recommend the fangame Vinemon which is like a Pokemon type game but with a big chunk of originality thrown in and barely left Pokemon identity if not for the concept itself. From small QoL additions, over a complete in GBA soundfont oriented soundtrack, to online multiplayer options etc., it feels like a loveletter in a shitposting humour oriented but standalone sorta game that really has surprises left and right through and through!
If you're interested in a Pokemon fighting game, Pokemon Type Wild looks much more polished, it looks almost like an ArcSys game of it's time.
Pokemon Close Combat is really great, if any of you liked what you saw i recommend checking it out and sending the devs some love.
Super Metroid: Subversion
I already tried out Dungeons of Infinity, and liked it very much, except for the ending, which turned a lot of people off, I heard. I do not know if it was fixed in later versions, though. Definitely checking out Star Fox 64 Survival! Great video, as usual
Oh hey, this was good timing - just saw you uploaded it lol
Loved Takua 64! But I do feel the platforming got a little too technical towards the end of the game.
Been enjoying your videos for the past month - keep up the good content :)
It took me more time than it should’ve to understand the thumbnail, but the point has come across👌🏻
Oh man, that Pokemon fighting game basing some of them off of the Gen 1 sprites...amazing!!
Holy shit Roguelike A Link to the Past? Sign me the hell up
If Star Fox 64 were to have had a sequel back in the day, I would've imagined a more 'Panzer Dragoon Zwei' base gameplay style to it!
Would put Power Bomberman and Pokémon Unbound in this list
9:10 so it’s basically StarFox Adventures but in the N64 to which that game was originally an N64 game Dinosaur Planet 🙃
Yes sir! keep up the great videos man
Close Combat MENTIONED
Sonic project 06 is also another one that feels official. Currently it is still in development and doesnt feel as official as it is effectively trying to undo the bad parts of Sonic 06
However, the improved dynamic gameplay, faster load times, and smoother runtimes compared to the original, makes it feel official.
You should check it out. Sonic, Shadow, and Silvers levels are all complete and the bosses and final stage are currently being worked on.
I only hear good things about Another Metroid 2 Remake.
Shoutout fellow "big noodle titling" font user! Yeeeah!
Hell yeah brother
I started playing 3mix earlier today. It really is that good.
rescue palooza also an amazing entry
I put the smack down with my pokemon... pokemon combat!
Maybe the miscarriege of Samus is a reference to Aliens
I saw Bioncle in the thumbnail and I’m like this guy is cultured. That game I’ve been eyeballing for years lol
Undertale yellow is amazing and honestly surpasses the original in some elements.
pokemon prism is unreal
(And yeah, this has been brought up before in one of the others too)
am2r is a crazy one
Your channel is a gem bro! God bless ya and Jesus loves ya!
There was another Pokemon fighting game that looked awesome, Pokemon Type Wild:
ruclips.net/video/PcjGIaVRejk/видео.html
When I first saw Close Combat I thought it was Type Wild, but I don't think the two are related.
Love the video!
Shout of to Ace Attorney Py Wright games
do one on Super Mario Logic smw rom hack
Have something magic on the 64 visuals
Super Clash Bros!
Pokemon Kanto expansion pak
Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R for short, and also Metroid: the Threat Never Ends. Both quite brilliant Metroid fan games, not romhacks.
Hello random streamer that showed up in my For you page
Legit
do you know that doom fanmade game where you can kill power rangers and teddy bears? if you happen to find it let us know
should have included undertale yellow
You missed Hyper Dragonball z. That stuff may be at least amongst the top 3 2d Dragonball fighting games and that's a hard thing to achieve considering how good Dragonball games are
Dragon Ball has lots of amazing games, but most of them AREN'T 2D fighting games
@uandresbrito5685 I know, which is why it's ih the top 3 after Fighterz and Budokai (all of them since they're the same)
@@ayouxy Budokai isn't a 2D fighter. Butoden games are and they're all bad
@uandresbrito5685 well, technically true but it is a fighting game that is side to side so...
@@ayouxy Not a 2D fighter, it works very differently. But it's "traditional", so I can kinda see your point
Good video, but do want to mention that romhacks and game mods are not the same as actual Fan Games.
Goldeneye X
don't tell Nintendo
nice
no am2r?
The whole point of this series is to highlight lesser known titles and hidden gems in the fangame space. AM2R is one of the most well known fangames of all time
¿Club Atletico Almirante Brown?
I like the videos but "fan games" generally mean standalone releases so it's a little misleading. I understand doing it to avoid a NintenNuke though.
Nintendo dosn't take down NEARLY as many fan games as people think they do. The stereotype is bullshit.
Did you change the thumbnail? It made me click instantly
There's a new thumbnail test feature that runs 3 different ones to see which one works best
Ngl, Hyper Metroid's plot is so bad that it devalues the entire game. Other M is art in comparison. And the color palette is quite weird. The game itself is cool though.
You could at least say on what system the game is running.
Is it a PC? The original game console? Any emulator? What emulator?
This would help a lot!
Takua 64's dev shared racist and nazi tweets
Takua 64 looks amazing
It really is, especially if you're a G1 Bionicle fan. The mod creator put in a ton of little fan service details, and if you get stuck, he also has a full Let's Play of the game on his channel.
Obligated fans do what Nintendont comment
*cough cough* undertale yellow *cough cough*
They put it in the intro of their "More Fan Games That Could Pass as Official" video the same way Pokemon Close Combat was done in this one (shoutouts to Pokemon CC!)
I have to let you know the developer of Takua 64 is rather controversial. You can find info about this on the Mask of Destiny forums.
Had to edit this comment because it disappears everytime I post it?? It's so frustrating
Just looked into it. Yeah wow that's all pretty rough.
The Mask of Destiny statement is the only source for any of this which I find puzzling.
This is the first time I'm talking about how I feel personally about the Takua 64 controversy and I feel like I will get shunned for this by my community (as silly as this sounds, in retrospect).

Small edit:
When I said "this situation seemed to be a small piece of a puzzle blown out of proportion" I meant that I felt there had to be more information to this and that the case was resolved too hastily; If that makes sense?
it would be really (not) funny if one of these developers got sued because of this video
"The story was too edge lord for me" Dark writing is not being an edge lord. An edge lord is someone who, through their actions and spoken words (I.E. a person doing this in person, or via messaging) tries to "ride the EDGE" of what is acceptable, often pretending to be tougher, more emotional, etc, than they truly are... a faker. Writing a dark story for a rom hack is not being an edge lord, grow up.
nah
never could understand why if these people made such good games why not change the characters to not look like the copyright ones and release them, worked for Them Fighting Herds
I used to think this, too. But once you decouple art from capital in your mind, it makes a ton of sense.
0:37 "I'm not going to be linking to any of these directly for obvious reasons...."
lol "Obvious reasons." You mean LAZINESS?? I'm pretty sure it's just laziness.
It's piracy my brother, that doesn't fly here on RUclips 😅
nah
Piracy, numbnuts.
You’re quite ignorant.
The owners of intellectual properties of all these games resort to lawsuits and other legal means just to assert their ownership, even if these game developer fans have zero intention to make any profit.
We have to protect each other, that’s why it’s the best option to not post any link.
@@rogeliolarronda Learn how the courts work, ignorant jackass. Committing piracy without showing us how he committed piracy doesn't negate the piracy. How the fuck are you this dumb.
