I used to play Shadow of the Ninja a lot with my dad back in the late 90s. When I saw the remake, I instantly bought a physical copy for the Switch. Great game.
Thank you. It's nice to see a list of platformers that are all on consoles. Most lists i have watched are steam only. PS Store needs to add a platformer category. I only know and have played Itorah from this list.
It's my pleasure. I play primarily on PS5 and I'm always looking for cross-format games, so more people can get involved. Thanks for watching, you're very welcome at the channel!
Thanks for the Recs, some of these I have, some I wasn’t aware of. One that should also definitely be on here is Mechstermination Force! That game was slept on hard and it’s so good
Gunlord X made me want to boot up my amiga cd32 and play turrican! But gunlord X (has many others on this video) made their way to my ps5 wishlist :) Great work :)
Thank you, I appreciate the support. I've only been doing this for about 10 months, so I suppose we'll see how we go. Much more to come. Welcome to the channel!
Solid list! I do have all of these on my Switch already, except for Zangyura, which I shall remedy soon. I just wish I had more time to actually play them all!
Thank you for making this list. I was especially looking for a game that is smilar to Turrican, and Gunlord X cannot be more similar. I love it, too bad it was not available on PC (WTH), so i had to buy it for PS4.
Hey Video Games Forever....thank you so much this amazing list...i can see you have putting up loads of hard work to bring these amazing things forth...least we can do is SUB you!! Props to ya!! 👏🏻✊🏻🤘🏻
A great video as usual! =) Moonrider is the only game on the list that I've completed. It feels old school but accessible with it's upgrade system. Even if I enjoy action platformers I'm quite bad at them. I have played a few levels of Gunlord X but it never really stuck with me and mostly felt frustrating with it's huge levels. Was also planning on picking up Shadow of the Ninja Reborn on release but after trying the demo and not even being able to complete that I gave up the plan. I may get on sale at a later time though. I'm going to pick up Iron Meat when me and my co-op buddy have time to play it.
Hello! It's true that Shadow of the Ninja takes some getting used to, but give it time - and when you've unlocked a few bonus items - it becomes an addictive little challenge. They do need to sort that item select thing out, though. Iron Meat is so much fun, and it looks and sounds brilliant. I really hope you enjoy it. Thanks, as ways, for watching!
I feel like Gunlord is blend that doesn't mix very well. Like you said, the levels are huge... but it's also very challenging. What works well is very challenging + straightforward levels that aren't too long. Or medium challenging + large expansive levels. But mixing very challenging + large expansive levels is a combination that really only appeals to a very specific niche. And I'm pretty good at these types of games, have beaten tons of them and no shortage of them on the highest difficulties (not a lot for a while, but I did that regularly until well into my 20's... but with less free time now it's usually Asian Action-RPG's that I usually play on hard or harder from the start).
Great list! Some real gems and others I had not even heard of. Should you ever do a follow-up, consider: Hundown, Katana Zero, Blazing Chrome, and Cyber Shadow. Just to name a few.
Thank you very much. I actually have both Huntdown and Blazing Chrome featured in one of my earlier videos for five excellent run and gunners. They're great games - and so are Cyber Shadow and Katana Zero. I'm discovering more hidden gems all the time, so there'll certainly be a follow-up video at some point. In the meantime, thanks for watching!
Fury Unleashed is a fantastic game. I was hooked until the end. Though I would suggest playing on easy, the other option is hard, and it is extremely unforgiving. The devs said easy would be normal in any other game.
The new Ghosts an goblins is rock hard. I played a few hours and didn't get anywhere. I think you have to start on the lower levels and build up the magic/skill tree to stand a chance. I really like the games you've shown in this video. Looks like a few of them are digital only because I've not been able to find physical copies for them listed anywhere.
Yeah, Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection is really tough. You need to stick with it for ages to get anywhere. A few of the games in the video have limited edition physical copies, but they can be difficult to find. Digital is often the only way to go, sadly. Thank you for watching, you're very welcome at the channel!
thank you so much for sharing these hidden gems! I've wishlisted a few of them also wondering if Cursed Castilla or other games by the same dev will be featured someday? those r also some well-crafted modern traditional games made by 1 person (save for the music maybe)
@@Video_Games_Forever The very first looks amazing (edit, shadow of the Ninja), buying it from Steam now. I bought Iron Meat from Epic a couple days back as I had enough rewards to cover it and it's been a lot of fun. On normal I am already through it though, will try hard next. Was fun unlocking all the different character looks. I also preferred the retro music option in that one. Going to be checking out more of your vids soon, this is the sort of content I just love! @@teddym2808 Yeah, Iron Meat is so much fun. Like I say in the video, I'd have loved it as a kid, and I love it now. Enjoy Shadow of the Ninja. It can seem quite tough to start with, but stick with it and it really rewards your patience.
@@Video_Games_Forever I think you might like Ganryu 2, specifically only the PC version as that's the one that performs at a solid FPS. It has some weird restrictions and has been judged overly harshly for things like no controller remapping and being hard, but if you put all that aside and just play the game, the controls are tight as anything and it's actually a brilliant action platformer. It really is. It looks and sounds great too. The other one is Return of the Ninja Warriors which is now also on Steam. Amazing game and update of the SNES version. If you are into shooters, you can't go past andro dunos 2, I spent 37 hours with that one so I could finally 1 life it on hard. My favourite 2D shmup at the time and in my overall top 10 ever. I’d consider myself “hardcore gamer I guess “ I’m also old now Most lists are meh or seen it all before but this list! Is genuinely bloody great 👍I only know 2 games from this list. The rest never heard about cheers
Hello! Thank you very much, I appreciate it. There's no grappling hook in Shadow of the Ninja, but you do have your extending chain spear that can spike enemies in all directions, which is very handy. Then there are a load of guns, melee weapons and health perks to be found in boxes throughout the levels. Lots to experiment with.
@@Video_Games_Forever great content!!!! yeah biogun devs really need some love they arent very well know but youll see they are very tallented, considering the game was made on one of the weakest engines.construct 3, lol yeah you had a fan as soon as i saw blast brigade on your list, you have obvious great taste cause your metroidvania fan!!! keep up the great work... whats your steam tag?
Very cool list, I have and know some but a lot of these were new to me. It would have been great if you mentioned which one has a physical release as many fans of the genre would only buy these.
That's a good point. I might have to start adding that detail in the description for these kinds of games. I love a good old fashioned physical copy myself. Thanks for watching!
Some of these look like gold and half of these I haven't even known about so thank you so much for that! Sadly what looks totally awesome is Gunlord X, but the borders on the side is a dealbreaker for me with any game which really is a shame... Thank you so much for these!!
I'm pleased to say that you can turn the borders off in the options, or rather, dull them to 0% so they just become black. You can even adjust the screen to entirely fit your TV or monitor screen ratio, and adjust the scanline intensity, or turn them off altogether. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Iron meat is as simple and straightforward ad fun, gritty and effective. Only complain was that with just a keyboard in certain sections and bosses aiming becomes clunky and annoying. Not sure if I was supposed to use some sort of controller and it's all my fault. Other than that, game does what it's supposed to AMAZINGLY WELL.
+1 Sub, I like your style. Platformers not my thing generally but I'm adding a few of these to my wishlist anyway. And anyone that wants Wreakfest 2 pronto is alright by me.
Shadow of the Ninja is another example of a great developer who doesn't understand the playstation market. It has no platinum trophy. It is a fact that games without a platinum always sell not as good as games with a platinum trophy on playstation. No matter what people who are not interested in trophies might think. Quite a lot of people do care and they want a platinum if they 100% a game. It's a shame if a game suffers success because of that.
Great stuff! Now do some of the best puzzle platform and/or adventure platform games! I'm looking for something not too challenging. My six year old son and I have played Limbo and Planet Of Lana. I had to do more in Limbo, but he needed very little help with Planet Of Lana. If anyone has any tips, let me know!
Thank you! Have you guys tried Unravel Two? You can play that together, it looks great and it's not too taxing. It Takes Two is also one of the best co-op games ever. It deals with quite an adult story - divorce - but it does so in a kind of Pixar way that shouldn't trouble a youngster too much. It's generally a really joyful game, packed full of brilliant ideas. More videos to come soon. Thanks for watching!
@Video_Games_Forever We don't mind playing one player games either. I have played Unravel, though not 2. He didn't want to try that game, I think the controls are still too complex for him. Anyway, it's a nice activity to do together, get excited in dangerous situations in the game and laugh at dumb and clumsy fails, and then you do it again on purpose, and that's even funnier. Like the circular saw blade in Limbo. 😆
@nedim_guitar Ha! It's great to hear of someone so young enjoying these games. The next generation are going to be so clever and technologically proficient.
Good question. I think you can play all of them without a right analogue stick, except for Blast Brigade, Fury Unleashed and Gunlord X (because of the secondary weapon). I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
I covered Aggelos in a previous video for five great pixel art games - that's brilliant fun. I need to try the other two, so thanks for the recommendations.
Ha, thank you! Yeah, sadly those two games are just on the PlayStation and Switch at the moment, but I really hope we see PC conversions. Thanks for watching!
I'm glad those games on not on PC. It at least will persuade people to buy other platforms just to play them similar to Viewtiful Joe, Madworld, Muramasa, The House of the Dead: Overkill, and Dragon's Crown, all of which are not on PC and must be bought through consoles only.
Yeah, it definitely has that kind of art style, although you're only ever on the one 2D plane in Vengeful Guardian, a la Shinobi. Pixel art fans should definitely take a look.

I agree the 90s arcade sensibilities goes a long way. Quality content. Great job!
I gotta play, most of these, if not all of them 😅
ty for shining light on smaller indie games !
Thank you! I do love uncovering a few lesser-known games.
very nice list, i rarely take the time to thank youtubers! but who havent played Fury Unleashed...? :ppp
Well thank you, I appreciate it! You're very welcome at the channel.
I’d consider myself “hardcore gamer I guess “ I’m also old now
Most lists are meh or seen it all before but this list! Is genuinely bloody great 👍I only know 2 games from this list. The rest never heard about cheers
Ah, thank you, I really appreciate it. Always good to hear from a fellow seasoned gamer. Thanks for watching!
Awesome list
Thank you
I appreciate it, thank you!
I have the wr speedrun in battle princess madelyn and would love more runners to play with. Its a fantastic game similar to gng.
As someone born and raised in Belgium, I am offended no one told me there is a game where you literally fight Manneken Pis.
I'm glad I could spread the word and start to right that wrong!
This is a fantastic list, thank you.. does the first game have a grappling hook that you can swing from?
Maybe slightly more well known than these is The Messenger, highly recommend it!
Yes, great shout. I covered that game in one of my videos for five excellent pixel art games. Excellent game.
you should try biogun!!!!!!!! its really fun.most fun ive had all year. great vid!!! cheers mate
Biogun? Cool, I'll check it out, thank you. And you're welcome, thanks for watching!
@@jiggilowjow I appreciate it, thanks again. My tag is smackybangbang.
Blast Brigade vs The Evil Forces of Dr Cread is great. Tons of fun.
I agree! And you've just reminded me that I completely forgot to put the rest of the title up in the video!
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.
I'll also add Pepper Grinder, it's very good
Yes, thank you! I still have to get around to that game. Good shout.
@@Video_Games_Forever That's absolutely great, now I need to get it! Thank you!! :)
@@sypharorigin My pleasure!
These borders are pretty much due to the Original Gunlord (without the X) being a Dreamcast/Neo-Geo game
They all look cool and awesome
The Pissing Angel 😂😂
Great video! I actually knew some of those games. But do you know: Okinawa Rush? 😁
Thank you! I do know Okinawa Rush very well - I covered it in a previous video for five excellent action platformers. Great game.
@@Video_Games_Forever That was the correct answer! Subscribed.
@@marcelluslongus1202 Haha! Thank you. And welcome to the channel!
I have gunlord x and moonrider both physically for switch awesome games
Ah, nice one. Those are becoming harder - and more expensive - to find.
Very nice. Any chance of digital code giveaways for any of these games?
Is Super Zangyura by the same people who made Bunny Must Die?
I loved that game.
Edit: Yes, it was.
THESE ARE MY TYPES OF GAME'S RIGHT HERE
I'm glad you like what you see! You're very welcome at the channel.
Anyone who likes Iron Meat should check out Valfaris. It's also a heavy metal inspired Contra style run and gun game. One of the best I've played.
That's good advice. I covered Valfaris in a video for five excellent run and gunners a little while back. Great game.
+1 Sub, I like your style. Platformers not my thing generally but I'm adding a few of these to my wishlist anyway. And anyone that wants Wreakfest 2 pronto is alright by me.
Ha! Definitely. Cannot wait for Wreckfest 2 to appear. Welcome to the channel!
Gunlord X is like Turrican
Yeah, a lot like Turrican. Any fans of that game should enjoy Gunlord X.
It's a shame that it's not on steam.
@@marcelluslongus1202 Console only. It was originally developed as a retro game for dreamcast and neo-geo over a decade ago.
Played a few. Heard of almost all of them. A good list that shines a light on some solid indies. Subscribed and looking forward to more good stuff!
I appreciate it, thank you. Lots more to come. And welcome to the channel!
Wow great list, never knew any of them. How many can be played with a arcade stick? (No right analog)
Good question. I think you can play all of them without a right analogue stick, except for Blast Brigade, Fury Unleashed and Gunlord X (because of the secondary weapon).
I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
@@Video_Games_Forever thats great. And thank you. I have subscribed and looking forward to the next video.
@@danielm978 No worries. Welcome to the channel!
I also recommend Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Aggelos, and Goblin Sword.
I covered Aggelos in a previous video for five great pixel art games - that's brilliant fun. I need to try the other two, so thanks for the recommendations.
@Video_Games_Forever for me Astalon is a 10 out of 10 game. Awesome pixel art, music, and level design.
Any game that emulates a bakage's digitized aesthetic gets an automatic sitdown with me.
Gunlord X is just a Turrican Clone but a good one
Gunlord X's character animation seems directly lifted from Turrican
Yeah, it's very heavily 'inspired' by Turrican!
Great video. Could not find Gunlord X and Super Super Zangyura on steam though.
even without the extra super :D
Ha, thank you! Yeah, sadly those two games are just on the PlayStation and Switch at the moment, but I really hope we see PC conversions.
Thanks for watching!
Super zangyura exists on PC but as an old version as it is a doujin game ,juste look on Google
I'm glad those games on not on PC. It at least will persuade people to buy other platforms just to play them similar to Viewtiful Joe, Madworld, Muramasa, The House of the Dead: Overkill, and Dragon's Crown, all of which are not on PC and must be bought through consoles only.
Vengeful Guardian looks and feels like it could be a spin-off of the Sega Genesis “Cyborg Justice”
Yeah, it definitely has that kind of art style, although you're only ever on the one 2D plane in Vengeful Guardian, a la Shinobi. Pixel art fans should definitely take a look.
@@Video_Games_Forever I may check this one out. BTW way, great video! I haven’t heard of any of these games. I ended up playing Demons of Asteborg! Solid game!
@@Fostext Thank you very much! I'm always delighted when people find new games, that's a big part of why I set this up. You're very welcome at the channel!
@@Video_Games_Forever thank you for having me!
Demons of Asterborg and Asterbro are great new mega drive games I own both original cartridge box complete as I backed and brought both games from the very beginning when NeoFid released Demons of Asterborg and when they announced the second game AsterBros I jumped on straight away both are great games and there’s so many amazing new mega drive games speaking of one I’m looking forward to is Earthion it’s a shump made by Yuzo Kashiro who made Streets of Rage series and Earthion looks like a arcade or even a Neo Geo game i don’t know when Yuzo releasing the game but I’m really excited for it
All beautiful games that I will want to have on my Steam. Gunlord-X looks like an AMIGA game. I loved Super Zangyura, but it's not available for Steam 😭😭😭😭
Sorry that you're missing out on Super Zangyura, but I hope you enjoy the other games. And thanks for watching!
Try playing bunny must die, it's from the same company of super zangyura.
It used to be on Steam, but there was a complication with Nintendo.
R.I.P. Gravity Circuit
Ah, great game.
OMG! As a Belgian, I have to try Super Zangyura because...I can testimony that there is no possible doubt about the "weird boss" real life inspiration:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis
The heck, I have never imagined to face him one day as a videogame boss, now one of my wildest dreams has even become true! 😂🤣
Haha! Yes, I know that little fellow well. There are little versions of him everywhere in the bars. Which is now making me think about excellent Belgian beer...
Thanks for watching!
1.Iron meat is just a cyborg contra ... almost like the Sega genesis hard core
2. Gunlord is just Turrecan from 90s
A REAL OG KNOWS AL THE EARLY GAMES.
