The cancer had spread to his lungs, and then eventually traveled through the blood to his brain, and he had suffered a couple of brain hemorrhages and that’s what caused him to pass away. They removed what they could from his heart without affecting the serious parts so there probably was some of the tumor left. You may be right, if they had transplanted and gotten rid of the cancer completely Eric indeed could have still been alive.
