  • Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited castles in the world. More than 1.3 million people visit it annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer. It is located in the municipality of Schwangau near Füssen and it lies at an elevation of 800 m (2,620 ft) at the southwest border of the German state of Bavaria.
    Neuschwanstein Castle can only be visited within a guided tour and you can book it directly at the official website without going through a third party. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. The admission ticket is valid for a guided tour of the castle at a specific time. Keep in mind that the guided tours start punctually; in the event of late arrival, participation in the guided tour is no longer possible and you may not be allowed to enter the castle. Reservation in advance is necessary due to the high demand.
    Hiking from the ticket center to the castle gate can take up to 45 minutes so make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes before your guided tour starts.
    Photos and videos are not allowed inside the castle.
    ✅ How do you get to the castle?
    If you are coming from Munich, take a train from Munich Central Station to Füssen. There is a direct train every 2 hours. There is also an additional connecting service that operates every two hours as well, requiring a change of trains in Kaufbeuren. Both the direct train and the other train with a connection in Kaufbeuren take approximately 2 hours to reach Füssen.
    Once you arrive at Füssen’s train station, take bus number 78. The bus station is just right next to the train station. The bus is clearly marked for the Hohenschwangau castles. You will see a lot of tourists rushing to board a bus, you really can’t miss it.
    The bus will take you to Hohenschwangau where the ticket office of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles is located. The bus ride takes approximately 5 minutes. Keep in mind that if you already booked a ticket online at the official website of Neuschwanstein castle, you WILL NOT need to enter the ticket center to redeem your ticket. Your online ticket should be good enough.
    From the ticket center, you have 3 options to reach the castle gate:
    1. You can hike all the way to the castle gate. This can take up to 45 minutes. This is what I did to reach the castle. I recommend hiking because you will enjoy the scenery along the way.
    2. You can take a horse-drawn carriage ride. This can take up to 25 minutes. You will still have to walk for about 5 minutes because the horse-drawn carriage does not take you to the gate.
    3. You can take a shuttle. The shuttle takes you to Marienbrücke viewpoint where the bridge is located. That bridge offers a great view of the castle. You will still have to walk for about 15 minutes to reach the castle gate.

    Upon arrival there, pronounced Nush-van-stayn (Neuschwanstein) because "W" in German is pronounced as "V" i used a bus (took a 2-way ticket, also the return) instead of the horse-drawn carriage. And yeah, you must be prompt for your time schedule so I didn't hike but took the bus going up. Though the bus has a last stop because the road is narrower, still walked but saw the castle not long after. I got separated from the woman I was talking to while waiting upon entrance but we were supposedly in the batch that entered, and I just followed after seeing all that was supposedly to be seen, then I found myself following few people in that tall tower you showed with many small windows, and there was the kitchen with bronze-colored pots and pans and stoves, wooden benches & tables for cooks in the medieval times at the kitchen and that was the only one I was able to photograph and turned out there is an elevator, looks like the old lady knew the castle staff so I just joined, hate to do stairs since I hurt my knee several years earlier. The man at ground was surprised to see me but I asked where's the exit and he showed me no question asked. I immediately went to the bus stop to be able to board the tour bus to return to Munich. That's what I do, just joined local tour bought online before I leave my country. Turned out there were additional places included in the tour, like first stop was Oberramagau where residents are actors for theater shows complete with costumes about Holy Week with tickets already sold out the previous year, you can see front of houses painted with scenes from the Bible, then Neuschwanstein, no time to see on own arrangement the Hohenschwangau Castle (where King Ludwig II lived as a kid), and 3rd we went to Linderhof Palace, no climbing to reach it, so nice, with golden paintings ceilings, furnishings, tapestries, furnitures much nicer than Neuschwanstein. This is the 2nd castle King Ludwig II lived as an adult with theater plays shown by composer Wagner (who was his lover). The 3rd castle of King Ludwig is at Chimsee (summer palace). Neuschwanstein (4th) took so long to finish because King Ludwig died. He was labled Mad King due to his grandiose illusions and so banks run after him until he was deposed. It was said he drowned while trying to escape on a boat ride at the lake but he was an expert swimmer. Upon investigation, they saw a hole on his coat, turned out he was shot but the result of the investigation was not put out anymore. Apparently the King became bankrupt from indulging Wagner of his extravagance that resulted in the delay of finishing the construction of Neuschwanstein. Sad story on the end of the King.

      Wow, your visit to Neuschwanstein Castle was quite an adventure! Thank you for sharing your detailed experience, and it's fascinating to learn about the pronunciation and your choice of transportation. The additional places you visited on the tour sound amazing, especially Linderhof Palace. King Ludwig II's story is indeed a tragic one. Thanks for enriching the discussion with your insights!

      Found this just now after watching your great video. Wanted to share his sad life, I feel he was misunderstood for his love for knights and fairytales. Can't blame him, that was what he grew up with. And true enough, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella's castles in Disneyland were inspired from Neuschwanstein Castle.

    That's really an amazing view of the castle off the beaten track. Well done. I missed to go into that Marie Brucke. It was pouring rain as well. So, my visit was really not enjoyable. You are blessed with a very good weather. Hope to visit it one day again and will have a very nice weather hopefully 😊.

      Thank you. I was lucky that day. The sky was clear which was unusual around that season. I usually prepare for the weather by staying at least a few days in a certain region so that when it rains, I wait till the weather clears.

      @@WandererBell Great idea. We plan to be at Salzburg for about 8 days as our base to visit Salzburg, Salzkammergut, Hallstatt. Werfen, Bad Gastein and Berchtesgaden. Hopefully, there would be sunny days. We will then proceed to Munich after Salzburg.

    Very informative video with practical information. Appreciate it.
    Just in case, If we wish to drive from Munich, do you know if we can reach the entrance of the castle and park the car? Or should we find a garage in Fussen?

    • @WandererBell
      @WandererBell  Год назад

      Thank you for the kind comment. You can drive and park somewhere at the bottom of the mountain and take either a shuttle bus or horse carriage or walk to the castle entrance. You can't drive all the way to the castle entrance. Then after you visit the castle, you can drive to Fussen and park there and explore Fussen.

    Hi!! Nice video! I wanted to know if the only forbidden route is the gray fence going through the bridge because I thought that the castle black fence was also closed.

    • @WandererBell
      @WandererBell  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for the kind feedback. The bridge is temporarily closed. There is no workaround to get to enter the bridge. However, when you go there, you will see people taking an alternative route to get a view similar to the view that the bridge offers. You can't miss it because a lot of other people take that route. You can just follow them.

    Hi! Is the bus free or do you have to get tickets for it? Where can we get it if we have to

    • @WandererBell
      @WandererBell  Год назад

      A Bayern ticket covers the bus that you take after you get off the train in Füssen. Keep in mind that you still have to pay for a shuttle if you choose to take a shuttle to go up to the entrance of the castle as opposed to hiking.

      @@WandererBell I bought a ticket online at the official ticket website for November at 1:40 pm for Neuschwanstein Castle and I printed it. It has a barcode. Do I just go straight to the castle and present this ticket ? Or is this just a voucher and should I still pass by the ticket office 1.5 hours prior to the tour and exchange it with an actual ticket? (That is what other websites are stating but maybe the rules have changed since then.). I saw in your video that from the Fussen train station, after you rode bus 78, you did not have to pass by the ticket office anymore. you just walked/climbed up to go to the Castle. You just had your ticket on your phone and scanned it at the turnstile.
