Hey Gary, cool toy. Also regarding stropping compound, I tried out a recipe that's working pretty good so far. So the size I use is an 8 oz spray bottle. Make 1 quarter of it glycerin or propylene glycol, and the rest deionized water. The glycerin or glycol act as a water soluble moisturizer, while the deionized water is extremely pure and is negatively charged so it pushes things away, so prevents agglomeration of the abrasive. Then I add 10 grams or 50 carats of diamond powder. My first time making it but so far, it works fine on my kangaroo strop.
Got my Mako in Jan '23 and love it. Didn't think I'd like the pocket sheath at first, had a kydex one made but now carry just the pocket sheath. Great edc tool, the magnacut holds an edge for a long time. Gets constant daily use on a small ranch. Only had to strop it up once but it's coming due again. Thanks for a great product, this is one I can see eventually handing down to a grandkid some day even though we don't have any yet.
Hey Gary, I know this is an older video and therefor I’m not sure you’ll even see my comment but would you mind sharing where you source the powdered CBN? I’ve been making and using my own diamond mixes for years but would love to find a CBN source that doesn’t require an industrial size order. Awesome sharpener too although again a bit too industrial for my needs!
I'll be honest, its not too bad but I prefer running water even though the lower rpm's arn't generating too much heat. Anyone that wanted to could put a bowl of water under it, but probably won't make a huge difference in the end product. Your doing it better than 95% of customs or production knives. I think its great for mass sharpening like you are doing.
There is a modest advantage with the water in that the very wire edge of the Apex can get heated up without it, but at these speeds it’s so minor that it’s not worth the downsides of the water. The downsides of the water is overtime it ruins, the wheels, basically particles of metal are left behind in the wheel, and then they rust, and start making imperfections in the wheel. I am also using a pretty aggressive CBN emulsion on the leather wheel at a matched angle that reduces the heat affected apex.
Im on the "edge" of buying this machine, I have been using tormek since 2019, happily borrowed from a friend, it now found its original home again. I honestly really like the water grinding, but I can tell my CBN 80 is not grinding that well anymore, either its loaded or simply worn out. (half year of heavy usage) I will try one of those cleaning sticks they sell and see if I can fix it. Either way, I like that I can use a belt over the wheel and it almost wont change the setting. I also have a 400 and 1000 cbn and intend to use one or both.

What’s the largest kitchen knife you can sharpen on this?
Pretty large, I’ve not maxed it out so I’m not sure. Does a 10 inch easily

Are you actively forging? Tried emailing you but no response. I'd like to acquire the Folklore Beast.

I forgot to mention in the video it does actually come with a water trough, I just don’t use it.
@@Creelyblades yeah that's one of the issues running CBN wheels with water sadly.
