Those old Mercedes diesel engines were built like tanks. Good old fashioned tractor technology. They don't make 'em like they used to. A nice choice for the Bayliner.
They way it ran I was thinking it needs injectors. I waited to comment to see if you thought that too. These are great engines though. Can be made to do big power. Some of the best engines in the world. Cheers, Ard
bout 10-15 seconds of glow, good prime, and it will kick over every time. I've got one of these in my 1963 unimog 404 with a claimed 250k miles and it runs like a top.
@Mochioverland the 404's in flat bed configuration typically come in around 5000lbs depending on how much kit you have on them, I haven't gotten mine on the road just yet.
Go ahead and do a vacuum pump delete and pull the valve cover off to check chain stretch. The vacuum pump vents directly into the crankcase so deleting it will get rid of some of that blow by.
I've got an OM 603.75 that is on my to-do list. It needs to set of cam followers and injector nozzles. These old engines are built like a tanks. Supposedly the one that I have is the least reliable. But it's odometer has rolled over and cranks over every time.
Is that actually bad blowby? Im used to old Ih and jd agriculture engines, and thats not bad. May a fresh turbo and injections and some seafoam for the 1st oil change..
I love these Mercedes diesel engines so much! Theres s guy in the UK whos got a YT channel too, check him out he pretty much exclusively a MB diesel builder, tuner, full-on die-hard enthusiast. @DieselPumpUK is his channel. If you need anything for this or any OM606, 605, 617 etc hes your guy to see! He even sells drop-in full 605 &606 crate motors ready to go with turned up high pressure fuel pump & totally mechanical too! Id love 9ne of these things....along with 10+ other beautiful diesel oil burning torque monsters! I want one of each of the real good diesels from 3406b on down to a 4bt, maybe even a 2.0 LUZ from a ('14 -'15)Cruz! I got problems, i know!👍🏻👌🏻⚡💥💨🚜🛠️🔧🔩
@@Mochioverland No problem. He is addicting, I agree! Good times on your worldly adventure, hopefully we'll see you over on this side of pond soon enough. I sub'd too! 👍🏻👌🏻😀

True, I think it just might be the perfect swap.:)
The tear down and rebuild would be great content! Looking forward to seeing this.
Yes, my thoughts too.
It's going to be fun that's for sure.:)

True, these are legendary engines, many went over a million miles.:) I'll definitely put some new nozzles in them.:)

What's your unimogs weight? We have an OM617 in our 3.5 tons van and it's definitely not the fastest BUT super reliable if looked after

That's the go to for old Toyota trucks!! My 1990 will have one someday
I've seen a lot of Toyota swaps on RUclips, like you say makes a great swap.:)
Would love to put one in my unimog 404 just never got around to collecting all the pieces
I look forward to seeing you tear it down.
With any luck I can get another season out of the Ford, then start on the 617 in the fall.:)
Nice runner, sounds like shes still got some decent power left in her too
Overall very happy with it.:) I'll freshen it up with rings, bearings and rebuilt injectors.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 looking forward to the videos 😎
PCV on top of valve cover is not connected to intake manifold, it looks capped with hose clamp... that will make crankcase pressure build up.
It is a very nice engine.
It became popular with the Mercedes taxis running nearly 1.000.000km with those. Our van is also equipped with it and we are super happy with it!

Thanks, I didn't know that.:) I have some learning to do.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 they are also known to fail and spit their ball bearings into the timing chain causing catastrophic failure.
@@RestoMog Thanks.:)

I've heard that as well about the 603, but many swear by them.:) I can't see Mercedes making a bad diesel.:)
Yeah a set of rings and bearings. Touch up the cylinder head. Will give plenty of care free hours for your boat.
I think that should work well.:)
Oooh the bayliner swap should be an interesting project. I assume this won't use seawater in the cooling loop?
It's fresh water only.:)
i have this engine. it runs great on waste atf
Awesome, my plan is to run veg in it.:) They're great veg burners as well.:)

It's pretty bad.:) I need to pull the head and replace the head gasket for an oil leak, so I'll measure things up and go from there.:)
What engine is in the Bayliner now?
Ford Lima 2.3 Liter.:)

Thanks, I've seen his channel a few times. I really liked the OM606 work he's done. For now I keep it stock, but may in the future upgrade the pump.:)
Thanks for that info! I've checked out the channel and it's definitely addictive. Our van runs on an OM617 and it's an absolute pleasure riding it.
