    2 Stroke diesel's with jakes just sounds brutal. Especially the dirty dozen with jakes.

    It still amazes me as to how much that 4-53T sounds like an 8V92 that powered the M1076 PLS trucks that my old Army unit had. Even with the Jakes engaged, the sound is strikingly similar. Great work sir!! Love your innovation!

    I remember in 2002 a new Ford pickup with an engine brake on I-5 in the rain lost control because at 70 mph dude had to try them out empty.😂

    Nice touch, as you do things fairly correctly which is why i watch you should get the brake lights to activate when the jake solenoids are energised.

      True, this causes a lot of confusion from drivers behind me when the truck slows without brake lights.:) I haven't been rear-ended yet, so all is good.:)

    Is there a distinct visual aide to look for on a listing or for sale posting to tell if a 453 has jake brakes ? I know pulling the valve cover but is there any thing to look for in photos? As always awesome truck awesome !!!!

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes the valve cover is 2” taller. Some have tall valve covers and some have a 2” riser under the standard valve cover. They’re becoming very rare.

      Most pickups use the variable geometry mechanism in the turbo to create exhaust backpressure instead of modifying the valve timing like a "true" jake brake. That's why they just make a whooshing noise instead of the clatter you hear in this video or from big trucks.

    • @diesellivesmatter
      @diesellivesmatter 3 месяца назад +1

      @@seabrookmx I've driven big trucks with turbine brakes, they work better than Jake's and are way cheaper.

    An 8V-92 jake, was like a whisper compared to an NTC-400 Cummins, even a 3406B Cat was no match for the Cummins, especially a KTA-1150 Cummins.
    nothing against Detroits, I love 'em myself, but taking the rack out of fuel while coasting gives better braking back pressure than slightly popping the valves open to dump compression...when jake is activated, injectors continue squirting fuel, giving you an after burn at the turbo where the exhaust temp is 900 degrees or greater. (like a diesel fired steam cleaner)...
    However, I love all the Craftsmanship you do...👍

      These Jakes work very well, (not as good as the Cummins) but never really have to use the brakes.:) Rack is idle fuel while the Jakes are active.:) Egts with the Jakes active is 355 degrees.:)

    • @PeterGort
      @PeterGort 3 месяца назад

      The injectors don’t normally keep injecting fuel, the Jakes are normally activated by a microswitch when the rack is in the zero fuel position. I have seen what you describe when a Jake unit had a slightly sticky solenoid, but it doesn’t happen in normal operation.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  3 месяца назад

      @@PeterGort Yes, the buffer switch controls the Jakes and can only be used when your foot is off the fuel.:)

    • @el-Conde-MonteCristo
      @el-Conde-MonteCristo 3 месяца назад

      @@PeterGort buffer screw and idle screw limits rack travel to "idle fuel on"... only the shut off lever geometry takes rack out of fuel completely...
      flyweight force at high RPM takes rack towards no fuel when throttle is released and buffer/idle spring tension/adjustment, holds it at 500/600 idle RPM fuel on even when Jake is activated.
      the shut off solenoid would have to be de-energized by the Jake switch to shut full off completely and stop raw fuel flowing through the turbo "furnace"... look at the puff of smoke out the tail pipe at the beginning of video when Jake was on, that's the "after burn" at the turbo... those Jimmys can shoot a 3' glow/flame out the stack pulling 80k uphill under full load and EGT over 1k degrees on the pyro.

    do jake brakes reduce engine life?

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430  3 месяца назад +2

      No, that's a common myth.:)

    • @snoman003
      @snoman003 3 месяца назад +2

      Nope, they turn a power producing engine, into an energy absorbing compressor.
      One of the best add-ons a trucker had back in the day to help slow down AND help reduce brake overheating and wear.
