  • In this week's video I go in deep through the process of designing a helmet. Using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, we will start from scratch to produce a design rendering for my customer to review.

Really enjoyed watching the creative process. Am not a helmet painter - just enjoy looking at custom painted helmets - they are truly works of art!

You don't have to be a helmet painter to be inspired. Thank you for watching. Cheers.

Great tutorial. You may already know this tip but - when working with the type and adding the stroke... You can open the stroke window and change the options for how the corners render... Especially when trying to mimic neon (which doesn't have any corners,) you can select the middle option and it adds a very small radius to the corners. I don't have a Roland cutter, so corners can become a problem area for me and this helps dramatically,

Hi, Nice design work...I really enjoy how you work on your way i love to see the real work in the Helmet same step by step how you mask and how u mix primer and base coat and color and clear coat
Also about the timing between colors and differences between color automotive and airbrush colors and how you mix them

great vid as always Patrice.. the comment at the end is great too.. sometimes clients will want details that are so small or ornate that you just can cut the masks or prep that.. also the understanding of moving from 2D to 3D and what that means is really important... thx for sharing.

Thanks for taking the time to make this vid Patrice - very interesting to see your design process. I like the extra step in using Photoshop for the finer details, something I don't usually do as I normally do renders 100% in Illustrator (got some timelapses on my channel if anyone's interested).

Could you make a video as far as the process of lining out the helmet? As in taking the design on the computer to the helmet itself.

Oh Master ! Awesome as always.
Please, can you tell us (maybe you just forgot it) where can we find fonts when we need more options besides the default?
    Thank you Sensei.

Hi Patrice how do you achieve good adhesion between basecoat layers. While laying out the design after a solid colour and between taping out etc. many thanks for the great content.

    • @helmetgurucanada
      @helmetgurucanada  Год назад

Hi Sean, thank you for your comment. Every paint manufacturer has a download page (or you can ask your dealer) where you can find TDS (Technical Data Sheet). This document explains everything you need to know about the paint you are about to use. Every paint has different characteristics (drying time, flash time, temperature for drying, etc...). Basecoat should adhere chemicaly to the previous base if it is sprayed in the proscribed period of time suggested by the manufacturer. The "open window" to spray over a paint is normally 24-48 hours. Pass that time, you need some adhesion promoter or us an "intercoat clear" like House Of Kolor's SG-100. I hope that will help you. Cheers.

This is truly so helpful for a guy wanting to get into helmet painting. Did you get all of your knowledge of photoshop by just going through trying everything? Currently using pencil and paper and coloring in with colored pencils but wanting to start doing it like this. Thanks!

So glad I could help. I learned everything by myself. It takes time and efforts. These days, with online learning and RUclips, at least you have references. When I started I had a book 🤣🤣 Good luck.

      @@helmetgurucanadahello,
Love your RUclips content and your way of explaining things. If and when you make more videos, could you talk about how you got your name out there, and built your clientel. Thanks!

@@dustinrose8807 When I started there was no internet. I had to paint friend's helmets, friends of friends helmets, go to races and show myself. I attended dozens of karting races. I was quite lucky that there was no established painters in my area. When I got my first website and people had a way of reaching out, things got better. It took me a good 5-6 years. All this time I was working in a motorcycle painting shop, learning as much as I could. I hope this can help you.

@Smart Race Paint Patrice Can you tell me why you have to do some of the designing in illustrator and then some in PS why cant you do it all in one or the other as to have them both makes it quiet expensive per month if you don't do it for a living? Cheers Scott

Great Video as usual Patrice, Interesting to see you work through both illustrator and photoshop. I appreciate what you said in the last few minutes of the video, being someone who wraps racecars and helmets (sorry one day ill paint) I can understand you 100% with these "designers" who really don't design to suit a helmet/car.
