- Ruta Sepetys introduces us to her new novel, SALT TO THE SEA, inspired by the true story of the little-known, largest maritime disaster in history: the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff during World War II. Find out more: rutasepetys.com/
In 1945, World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, almost all of them with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer toward safety. Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people aboard must fight for the same thing: survival.
A tribute to the people of Lithuania, Poland, and East Prussia, Ruta Sepetys unearths a shockingly little-known casualty of a gruesome war, and proves that humanity can prevail, even in the darkest of hours. Развлечения
I finished this about ten minutes ago and there are still tears. This book is amazing.

All the little ducks with their heads in the water...
This book is amazing 😭😭
Heads in the water,
nope, ducks
that part messed me up
omigod I don't cry over books and I'm sad I didn't cry over this one. A strange thought to have, but I'm sad I didn't cry
I was in tears over this book... I dearly loved Emilia's final chapter... Ah, it was so beautiful and heart shattering.
i need this. As a Lithuanian girl, i am looking forward to this.. You are an amazing author, Ruta. Between shades of grey was such a great book.
I just finished Salt To The Sea and learned so much! I had never heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff until i read it. I loved it, the characters felt so real. The fact that you took the time and effort to do the research really shows and makes me appreciate your book so much more and will definitely be reading your other books!
Nicole White i totally agree whit u
i agree with all of this. it’s so good.
Even I never heard about Wilhem Gustloff. A tragedy bigger than the sinking of WG is people not knowing about it. And I completely agree with you, the characters and their development was amazing.
I'm still crying... what a beautiful and tragic novel
Ruta is such a brave and important author. She writes about history not many know but we can't afford to forget lest we repeat it. Massive respect to Ruta.
Seriously guys, this book drained all tears out of me!
Try reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and let's see what will be left of you after that. 💔
I wan to be Ruta's research assistant. Her books get me thinking beyond my first-world, you-can-have-what-you-want society. I've watched this video four times already. Can't wait to read this book!
Book left me speachless. Amazing story!
I'm a little more than halfway through the book, and I stumbled across this video. I debated watching it for obvious reasons. Now that I have though, I'm eager to finish the book. I didn't have any prior knowledge about this ship. Why is this not being taught in schools? I don't understand.
I know, I live in Kansas lol
I have no idea, I will talk to my history teacher about it.
Thank you, Ruta. Your books have thought me such invaluable life lessons. I can't wait for Salt to the Sea to be published, and for Ashes in the Snow to be premiered.
Wow! Her retelling of these people's stories gave me chills. Need to read this one.
This book was amazing. My mind is still reeling from it.
Listening to Ruta talk about her books makes me love her books even more. WOW!
This book is so beautiful, I didn’t want it to stop. The story is gripping
I was crying when I read this book! 😭 it was so good and tragic!
Can’t believe I’m still re reading this in 2024. This is a beautiful novel. I cried so hard when the shoe poet died.
One of my favorite books
Thank you so much for giving these voiceless victims a chance to tell their stories and pain. It still shocks me to think these tragedies really happened and I cannot thank you enough for giving life to this part of history that should not be burried. Let’s all tell the stories of these people that perished.
I don't like that Ruta just omits that the Red Army actually had every right to sink the freighters. The Gustloff was equipped with weapons and to submarines they count as enemy attack ships
This is giving me chills and I'm crying. I really want to read this book
I just finished this book and am overwhelmed with emotion. So beautifully written. I’ve read all of her books and I think this is my favorite.
i came across this video after having read Salt to The Sea for the 5th time and I want to read it again now. It is so beautifully written and powerful. Undoubtedly one of my favorite books.
I thought I had finished crying yesterday but this brought back the tears
I finished reading this book today and it is so good. I would definitely recommend the book.
I got chills while watching this, and the book is amazing. The characters were so well written, and the way you told their story was chilling and very well done.
by far the best book i've ever read
I want to read this book! She is my favorite author!
Beautiful! sad....but so beautiful the purpose you have found of telling the lost stories....
I just love her books and how she shares history that few know of.
This book needs a movie
i loved this book so much! i felt like i’ve known all of the characters and some parts just made me cry 😭
I just finished this masterpiece and learned so much, felt so much!
The way Ruta weaved the 4 narrators’ tales was beautiful. I cried for their tragedies, then even more after learning that the events were mostly true.
Read the book 3 years ago and it still is my favorite. I gave away most of my novels to friends and family who love to read including my copy of Salt to the Sea. I now wish I hadn’t given it away. I fell in love with Ruta’s novels and writing styles. Because I love history, I love reading and listening to stories in the past. I always talk about the ww2 and civil wars my grandparents lived through. We may learn about historical events in school but I hated memorizing dates and people and the politics of why the event happened. I prefer learning history thru the stories of ordinary people who were the most affected when prominent people decide to wage wars. I hope more authors would do what Ruta does. And I applaud Ruta for her dedication of really researching and studying and interviewing. Her hardwork reflects in the quality of her story.
This video is chilling I read the book a couple months ago and I’ve never read a book that’s made me sob harder
Thank you for this excellent video! I chose this for our Book Club and was not disappointed. How exciting to learn parts of history we didn't know.
excellent book, excellent research
After finishing it, I immediately wanted to re read it. The writing was so beautiful yet simple. The author 's note at the end was very insightful and great
Thank you for making this video, it really helped me with my book talk at school
i just can't wait to get my hands on this book!! already ordered from Amazon!
The book is so freaking powerful and this video gave me gosebumps. I live in Sweden, one of the most natural countries in the world so my family wasn't affected by the war. And I'm so grateful for being born here, and in this time. I'm so grateful for not living in a warzone.
So what is a better way showing it than raising MY voice for others? I'll recommend this to everyone is see. School needs to know about this, needs to make the pupils read this. Gosh, THANK YOU for show us the hidden truth.
Looking forward to reading this magnificent story.
i havent read the book...but this video made me cry
Ishama Marium you must read.
@@clarabyrne3597 already did , was quite beautiful
When Ruta said that we don't know the victim's names it me sad, because people need to realize that they're not victims they are survivors.
This book is absolutely amazing
I read this book in 2017, and watching this video, again, made me want to just pick it up and reread it.
This was a great read! So tragic
she is an amazing speaker too
Absoliutely beautiful.
Omg Ruta I love your books

Finished it just minutes ago.

Joseph Mulpeter you do.
i read this when i was very young (like 11) and i hated it. it made me feel very odd and i can’t explain it. i just reread it (13) and i love it
i loved this book bt i am a little confuse... who is Clara Christensen? (the girl who wrote the note to Florian after the sinking)
do you mean the woman who found emelia?
The whole state of Prussia had over 40 million people, not the region of East Prussia. East Prussia had 2.49 million inhabitants. Much, much smaller than 40 million people.
I want to read this so bad!!!XD
I met her!!!
People need to remember such tragedies. Here's another one: Armenia was sunk on 7 November 1941 by German aircraft while evacuating civilians and wounded soldiers from Crimea. It has been estimated that approximately 5,000 to 7,000 people were killed during the sinking, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_hospital_ship_Armenia
Yes, of course, must remember en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg_trials and
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemmersdorf_massacre,
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metgethen_massacre
... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_war_crimes
@@shernassNr1 The sinking of the Gustloff wasn't a war crime
😍
My Grandma lost two little cousins on this ship
this video remind me of the syrian refugees now
I agree with the fact that every country tells the story through their ''cultural lens'', too bad the author is showing only one perspective. World War 2 was way more complex than that.
thanks now I don't have to read it for my summer reading book
Yeah,I have to do it this year. :(
Kinda felt bad for Alfred, he was badly influenced and became insane and racist
i came across this video after having read Salt to The Sea for the 5th time and I want to read it again now. It is so beautifully written and powerful. Undoubtedly one of my favorite books.
