As a Lithuanian I am so happy our stories are being shared and I still can't understand how people can ever agree to help and support something so horrible. I am turning 16 next year and if the war in Ukraine is still ongoing I will go and risk my life to fight against evil. These stories are proof we do not want this again.

As a mom we tend to rethink some of the choices we make in the classroom. I started reading Between Shades of Gray and knew immediately I wanted it in my classroom. I always have an independent reading project when we read The Diary of Anne Frank play. They get to choose the books with the only requirement of being set during WWII. I try to give book talks on multiple books, but students gravitate towards newer books. Ruta Sepetys was the choice this year. Loved that they chose her books.

Love!! This is my absolute favorite author. I’ve read all of these as well - and tore through them - as someone that loves historical fiction. Id rank them:
    1. Fountains of Silence
    2. I must Betray You
    3. Between Shades of Grey
    4. Salt to the Sea
    5. Out of the Easy
I teach 5th but have thought about moving up to go more in depth with topics like these and being able to discuss this with students

"The Fountains of Silence' is one of my favourite books! I recently ordered, "I Must Betray You", and "Out of the Easy", which I'm extremely eager to read because I live in New Orleans. Your description of all the books is amazing and I enjoy watching your videos.

"I Must Betray You" was the most shocking of her books. Each of her books illuminated subjects I had vaguely heard about, but all I knew about Romania was it was part of the Soviet Union and where it is on a map. Other than that I was clueless.

It is veeeery sensationalist. Shock and terror sells.I lived during that period.

I’ve only read I Must Betray You (& recommended it to everyone I know!), but am so looking forward to her others through the rest of third year. I adore historical fiction anyways and these share so much that for someone who loves history so much, I know so little about. I have a minor in history and devour historical nonfiction too, but these “stories from the margins,” as you phrased it, are so new to me and it angers me how little I know.

Thanks for this. She is an amazing author. If you haven't already read any Elizabeth Wein, I highly recommend her historical fiction, too - starting Code Name Verity

Thank you so much for these summaries!! I live in Spain and am currently teaching the Civil War and the following Franco regime. Reading your recommendation over the summer will definitely improve my teaching of the subject next year. Thank you so much for always sharing such valuable and genuine information. Take care!!

Just read "Fountains of Silence", credits to you, I love love the book.
When I ordered it, I also purchased two nonfiction reads which may interest you
    "Not without My Daughter"
    "the Redhead from Auschwitz"
    Incredible, both of them

I am not particularly into historical fiction but love to read. I am so glad you posted about these books on Instagram! Halfway through your description of Between Shades of Grey, I paused the video to download it to my kindle. So far I am loving it despite how sad it is from the start. I also completely get what you’re saying about how hard it is to read some of these things postpartum. I was reading the book with my 8 week old in my arms and couldn’t stop picturing what it would’ve been like to be dragged from the hospital with her immediately after birth fearing for my life. Thanks for the recommendations!

I read Salt to the Sea in school my freshman year of high school. It is now one of my favorite books ever lol, despite the despair that comes along with reading it. Out of the East Is my all time favorite tho!

Very good and interesting review. I just finished reading The Fountains of Silence and ordered I Must Betray You yesterday to start reading next week. I read what it was about and I know I am going to like it. I am giving Fountains 9 out of 10. For perspective, others I've given 10 in my life are among others Zafón's The Shadow of the Wind (being Spanish I had to love that one) and McCourt's Angela's Ashes.
I have to mention the great cover artist for both Fountains and above all I Must Betray You.
