@@Thomas11611 You are entitled to your opinion, but for a huge fan of "Shadow Of The Colossus" like myself, it's an awesome game. There are 8 main bosses & 4 ( that I've found so far ) mini bosses. I've already put over 30 hours into the game & I still haven't taken out all the bosses or found every item. As Max said, the game could stand some extra polish, but as it stands now, I give it a 8/10. Hopefully a physical release is in the works.
Working on a Colossus-like game for my college senior year and I might want to get your thoughts on it's controls and feel. I need to get some outside playtesting as part of the assignment anyway. I hope that someday I'll be able to contribute to the small pool of Colossus-like games in the future. Because you're right, there needs to be more games like SOTC!
"Shadow Of The Colossus" is a very unique game in so many ways. "Preay For The Gods" is really the only spiritual successor we have so far. Although "Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow" does have similar game mechanics when it comes to taking down some of it's bosses. I agree that we need more open world games where the main objective is to locate huge beasts, figure out how to get onto them & then take them out. Good luck with your project.
when you talk about the different ways to approach the colossi, in my first play through of SOTC I didn't know about the lizard's tails mechanics and finished it without any of it. I was so hooked on the ambiance that I wanted to keep exploring every inch of it, that's when I noticed a little white tailed lizard at a shrine of sorts.
The survival stuff in Praey really got in my way. I've played games with survival, environmental hazards, and more, and I've enjoyed them. In this game, I eventually turned off the survival stuff. I really enjoyed the game, though! Colossi were interesting and some very challenging, usually in fun ways. I never understood any part of the story, even after reading ALL the documents.
Gotta agree on that statement about being terrified while fighting the colossi esp. the Boar. For me. Other than that, it's a great attempt to give us another chance to feel like Wander. Yes, the game is quite unfair in some aspect but overall - this was very nostalgic for me. Kudos to the three human beings creating this. This is a better review than any other, Max. Simple amazing.
Shadow of the Colossus was one of my all-time favorite games, despite me yelling profanely at the screen. Not many games have reached that level with me. I feel like introducing lower level enemies would ruin a similar experience, but of course, it could be done right. Max, I feel your need to express disappointment in that failure, since it was such a key element to SotC. I can deal with somewhat wonky controls, because SotC had that, but if it doesn't carry the same emotional weight in the story, it will never live up.
I've been waiting 6 years for this game too. And it looks like I'll be waiting a bit longer for the retail release which I praey we get soon since I don't purchase games digitally. And this is a game I definitely want to physically own. I've played with friends in share play & while the game might need a few more tweaks, I'm quite happy with what I've experienced so far. S.O.T.C. fans need more games like this.
I just got recommended another game after watching this video, solar ash. not much climbing but skating and hooking to giant... things. in the trailer show up at least 2 homages of SoTC in a flying giant and a walking one with a rigid arm. worth checking out if posible.
That's why Team Ico didn't include lesser enemies and survival aspects. They wanted to focus on the atmosphere and the colossi themselves. Maybe Praey for the gods wanted the survival aspect to enhance the loneliness feeling, but SotC proves it isn't necessary.
Thank you max. Love your SoTC content. I enjoy your philosophia and esoterica content as well. Wish you were more red pilled. You are the only one, as far as i know, looking at games in this light. Have not watched you for a year, a lot to catch up on! I'm excited!
Now that I've spent over 30 hours on the game & still haven't completed it, I thought I'd come back & watch this review again. I must say I'm not disappointed in the game at all. If you don't rush through the game, it's got a big map to unlock, many weapons & items to find, & some clever puzzles to solve. The game could stand some extra polish but I'm still giving it an 8/10. As a huge S.O.T.C. fan, it's awesome! Hopefully a physical release comes out at some point.
Great review man. As a fan of SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, th found myself comparing it to PREAY MOST OF THE GAME. I wonder what they could’ve done with a bigger team and or better budget. I enjoyed the game though.
Its interesting how subjective some of these things are, while he was talking about how some of the survival elements get boring at times, I was thinking the opposite, having to withdraw from a fight to heat up in a makeshift camp sounds like a pretty fun systemic element to me
I would rather have no enemies other than the main bosses & I would have preferred many more main bosses. But once you get your character upgraded & find some of the more powerful weapons, it makes the survival elements much easier. The map is quite massive if you unlock all of it & there are many weapons, items, & puzzles to solve. I've already put over 30 hours into the game & still haven't finished it. I can't rush through a game like this.
Survival mechanics are always a risky implementation in games. I always wish games would keep their basic difficulty separate from their survival mode as that gives players the option to have what has the potential to be a lot more fun or a huge nuisance, depending on the player. As someone who loves Shadow of the Colossus, it sounds like an extra layer of content for me, and even though I'm just now hearing of this game, I'm already excited to play it.
Not just Shadow of the Colossus, but it looks like they've taken some inspiration from Breath of the Wild, which I would say is also influenced by SotC
Pandora's Tower felles similar too except instead of having to explore a big open world. The game takes place inside 13 towers. Also the game has more action RPG elements. Each tower ends with a boss there is also a girlfriend that the hero is trying to from a curse.
I liked this game too, but I think my biggest complaint is that it can be pretty obtuse in places. For example, trying to find the seals got pretty tedious because they're hard to spot. I ended up using a help guide to find a few just because the bosses took so long to beat and I didn't want to waste hours scouring every part of the boss' body for seals. By contrast, SotC highlighted the sigils in bright blue, making them stand out against the brown fur of the colossi. I had a similar problem with the grapple points, especially on the final boss. The lava - which you can grapple - is nearly the same color as stone you can't grapple, and this is the first time we encounter lava in the game, so it took me far too long to realize I could grapple lava. The good news is that, while frustrating, these are all pretty easy problems for the developers to fix. The core game is pretty solid, especially for a team of 3 people.
I donated to this kickstarter years ago, like in 2018 and I totally forgot about it until like a few days ago. I was browsing the Playstation store and was like "oh yeah, shit I gotta get my code!"
Bro, you've got the best voice to make whatever interesting. I'm still trying to find the video where you explained there is a secret door after finding all the 79 sparkles, I think you removed it, it was awesome.
Sweet, probably should have released some kind of promotion for this. It looks like everyone forgot about it including me but i cant find a physical copy if that was ever a thing?
There was promotion for Prey For The Gods until Bugthesda took issue with the name claiming fans were too stupid to tell apart Prey and Prey For The Gods leading to a potential battle which killed the funds for promotion
oh my god hahaha, my friend was showing me this game and he did the same thing with that flying boss cause he didnt notice the "real" way you were supposed to get onto it! thats hilarious

Shame Shadow of the Colossus is a Playstation exclusive. Praey is the only way many of us can experience this type of game play since the genre never really took off.
Why should I have been terrified by the Colossi of the original? They weren't evil or bad creatures, that was the whole point of the game: The nescessity to kill those maginificent creatues to lift a curse, it was this averseness, that added to the games melancholy. You were forced to end their life, which left the player, who understood this dilemma with bitterness and sadness.
I don't like how the weak points are designed. No way to improve on the boss fights skill wise like shooting arrows into a weakpoint as you wait for the perfect time to jump on or the Jumping plunging attack which is the best attack wanderer has at the risk of being more easily thrown off. The horse added another interesting layer of difficulty as you can shoot while riding or stand on top of it for a better jump off. Small things like that add more to the experience. Not survival mechanics but interactive mechanics. In SotC it would actually be beneficial at time to stab them in a none weak point for a particular reaction. But in Praey you have only that one attack which just makes the idea of weapons hilarious. That's why SotC didn't just give you upgrades easily they already knew the mechanics would speak for themselves and keep the player engaged. Grappling hook and a parachute don't make creative encounters just makes it so you can do more mistakes. It's essentially checkpoints on a boss. But with the game being so short it could've afforded allowing the player to really plan out their attacks rather than give them a free ride to the next weakpoint
