@Random Pixel Elitist insults aside, some games can be very enjoyable even with lacking graphics. You're being very childish attacking his opinion based on your personal preferences. Good graphics don't equal great games. I play on PC, PS4 and Switch and one of the best things I've played in the last couple of years was Stalker Anomaly, which looks old and is completely free - yet it's one of the best things you can play right now, filled with depth and replay value.
@Random Pixel I also agree it isn't worth it's full asking price, but to call it a turd is just childish. I don't need to polish anything, the game looks pretty good to me. Like I said before, to eah their own.
Having played through the game on early access and beating it after official release I can safely add this. Yes, it is lacking in some places. In terms of the world lacking things like landmarks or whatever I argue against that. With the various little tents, caves, and massive frozen giants I found various locations memorable to some degree. Though it lacks in some places (all points brought up in the video) it does well with what I wanted to do. Survival combined with SotC bosses. The different options for difficulty I think are amazing. I played through on Hard/Survival and I want to go back for a round on Legendary/Survival (The hardest difficult). That blend works wonders I think and more games with survival mechanics need to adapt it. And with that, it makes the bosses all the more memorable. Struggling to reach the last bell and ring it as the wind picks up and you're close to freezing. It makes every boss a puzzle with a timer, gathering enough supplies to ensure you won't freeze or starve. I love it when paired with exploring the world. Always making sure I'm hunting and hoping cave to cave to prepare. (Or you can turn it to Story mode and skip that. A great feature for those looking for it) As someone who never had a chance to play SotC but always interested, I am happy with this and really glad I got it. I like winter apocalypse survival games (The Long Dark). This is by no means a perfect game, it's just the right game.
They changed the name from PREY to PRAEY to avoid copyright. According to Google No Matter Studios changed the part of the name from "Prey" to "Praey" to avoid trademark disputes with Zenimax, I noticed you didn't cover this in the 3 minutes review, doesnt matter but just some trivia
Should be noted that this is a Kickstarter game which is why the graphics are the way that they are. It's been in development for such a long time so it's nice to see it finally get released. My main gripe would be that from what I've seen is that too many of the bosses look identical to SoTC bosses only with a mild reskin. When the game was first announced in 2015-2016 I was hoping they would focus mostly on new boss designs and new ideas that haven't been done before, but it looks like most of the differences between this game and SoTC is the fighting mechanics and tools and not necessarily the boss design.
I love the fact that some reviewers are giving it a good review and some aren't. I haven't seen this kind of variety In game reviews in a long time. Love it!!! Keep up the good work.
I backed this on kickstarter years ago. The devs have worked soooo hard to bring this to life. I love it for aesthetic alone. Please support the devs and give it a go.
Same, they've proven their dedication to getting this game made and deserve to see it in the finished state they always intended for it. PLEASE SUPPORT THEM HOWEVER YOU CAN. If not with money, then with a post bringing awareness to it!!
"Incredible designs and animations for... the bosses" I'm sorry, but the designs of these monsters look like the team didn't grasp the point of the minimal design in Shadow. The clashing runes and other useless decorations, as well as the bells and the poor silhouette, make these giants look like cheap knockoffs of the ones in Shadow. In general, Praey looks to me like it offers a tiny fraction of what Shadow had (emotion, story, aesthetics, music, game feel included; innovation excluded because Praey obviously isn't going for innovation). It swaps the truly unique and thematically and emotionally resonant traversal between bosses in Shadow with smaller enemies and survival mechanics. Maybe there's a reason no developer out there is trying to make a spiritual sequel to Shadow. Shadow did so much right and so much new and even still the overall experience, the sum, is somehow greater than all the parts. Shadow of the Colossus remains a mysterious achievement in many ways.
A little derivative, yes. Though it's blended well together in the game. The survival/crafting isn't too complex. However, watching your cold and hunger slowly build as you figure out a fight adds just the right amount of stress. I think it works well all things considered.
One of the big things that made SOTC work is its incredible score, by Kow Otani. The fact that this review doesn't even mention the soundtrack makes me think that's not the case here.
comparison to horizon zero dawn...yeah, it has...wait, it has no similarities outside generic aspects, redhead, snow, bow...if that is enough to invite comparison, damn xDD
I know this is an old comment, but also kinda noticed (probably because of the glider) a little of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. and since I've never really played Shadow of the Colossus, the big bosses you gotta climb always kind of reminds me of Castlevania Lords of Shadows.
Screw the boss on all fours that is so frustrating just to get to across that gap after grappling up the pillars because when you die you have to get across to him all over again. Hopefully they've patched it since I last played it last a few months ago so the checkpoint is after you go through that door.
The bull one, right? I just played the game myself, and no, you still have to go across. But... you just grapple the hanging stone weight, not any pillars. Grapple the weight, ride it up a bit, jump, glide, you're in.
@@natewardle Yeah that was the one, I'm glad they've changed it now - I'll have to reinstall and give it a go again. Might give the games ZP episode a watch as it downloads! 👍
Cannot stress enough: It is NOT available for Mac, no matter how much they've touted that you can "easily" access it from one. I and other Mac users who backed it on KS have been banging this drum for a WHILE.
On the one hand, my first thought is that this game only has 7 bosses while Shadow of the Colossus had 16. But then I remember that, as much as SotC is one of my favourite games of all time, some of the Colossi _were_ a bit phoned-in (the small bull and lion ones) or repetitive (a few too many bipedal humanoids with giant smashing weapons) and honestly the game wouldn't suffer all much if they were removed, while the bosses in this one all look more different and unique from each other. Been keeping an eye on it for a while, maybe I'll pick it up at some time in the future.
@@CJWproductions ...actually, I'm absolutely _wrong._ I don't know why I said SotC had 13 bosses when it actually has *16* (I've since edited my comment). But I guess the fact that I couldn't even remember 3 of them off the top of my head only proves my point.
I adore Shadow of the Colossus so, of course, this holds interest for me but isn't this just another "same game, different name" knock-off like Back 4 Blood, which just makes you want to play the original instead?
I do mention the sluggish combat, but didn't really have major issues with other aspects. Though I will say it feels a lot like SOTC and people forget that game doesn't control like a dream either.
@@AbsolAhm Maybe it's cos I use mouse and keyboard inputs on my Dualsense but as soon as I press jump, attack, dodge, etc. the character moves instantly. I'm half way through the game and haven't had a single issue with the controls
It's a pretty huge overlook but the game was made mostly by three guys with a kickstarter budget so comparing it to games from teams of dozens is beyond unfair. This is basic information you can get from their website, be less lazy.
Maybe that matters to you that the game was made by a few people, but to me it still needs to be fun first and foremost. In this case I think it is, so it's also irrelevant for you to bring up as if it mattered regarding what my critique was. Am I supposed to praise something more because less people worked on it despite it being less fun or interesting to play? No need to answer that question cause I'll tell you now that I won't.
Before calling someone “lazy” have a think about the fact that if we reviewed games based on how many people made it, we’d have to change our standard on literally every game. In fact in this very review KC gives it immense praise for being as close to a sequel as you’re gonna get from SOTC. Use your brain before you call someone else lazy.
The customer doesn't give a shit if your game was made by 1 person, or if it was made by a hundred. Is it fun to play? Is it captivating? Is it challenging? All these things and more are completely separate from how long the credits list is.
I'm willing to give a game some leeway on polish if there's a small Dev team but considering there have been some excellent games made with small teams it's not an excuse for flaws.
It looks decent enough too me. It does however make me more interested in going back for another playthrough of shadow of the collossus.
I thought the same thing. I started watching this and half way through I glanced over at my copy of Shadow of Colossus sitting on the shelf.
Same, and I've replayed shadow over 10 times already.
