I’m not saying these parents are right, but we don’t know the kinds of behaviors they had to deal with. I think basically making him stay in the box for extended periods of time deplorable. i agree, they don't seem to be focusing so much as to the trama they are putting the child through, or the dangers/risks they let him at. they seem to be more focused on what the child did wrong.. personally, he did some stupid kid things. he seems very smart and should be in a higher education than they have him in. it don't matter what this child did, no excuse to lock a child in a room without access to lights, air conditioning, food, water, and a bathroom. i can see if the child sleepwalked, to lock his door while he's sleeping but make sure he is fed, and bathroom first, then there would be an alarm installed for fire, and an escape. this set up was nothing but a jail cell and i'm sure jail cells have emergency procedures to unlock the cell in the event of a fire. ..and if he's afraid of the dark to let a night light on.. how could they even emotionally listen to his crys every time they shut that door and shut out the lights?

There's definitely something else going on besides a father's abuse of a child.
The whole control and abuse thing is very troublesome.
The defendant reminds me of my ex who's a covert narcissist..His appearance, his lack of emotion, the cold, dark intimidating stares.
Covert narcissists have an insacious need to control, over the top control, mostly in hurtful, cruel ways.
They prey on the most vunerable.
In relationships, or in families, covert narcs seek out those they see as weak, so they'll be easier to verbally abuse.
It's not being strict, or having a bad day here and there, it's constant, sustained verbal abuse.
      This is how they operate.
They don't physically abuse because they'll be evidence of their physical, destructive behavior.
It's verbal and over a period of time, it can cause psychological damage to their targets.
Adopting a baby or a child would be a perfect choice of a covert narcissist because they see those as underprivileged, vunerable, etc, hence they are easy to manipulate and abuse.
They hide their inner feelings, but underneath their perfect image, is a heartless monster.
My opinion, but from what I have heard this far about this story, there are similarities of the defendants behavior and covert narcissist behavior.
Without knowing the family dynamics, if this is true, the spouse is sometimes oblivious to covert narcissists, what their intentions are and what they're actually capable of doing and why.

Many international adoptees are not really orphans, even from very poor countries. Real orphans are to sick or handicaped for the western world to want them, so these children are snatched and kidnapped from the real parents. This child was subjected to a form of psychological torture. Being isolated and locked up in a pitch black room for hours on end, with no stimulus is a form of sensory deprivation. This child was stripped of rights as a human being, right down to the most basic thing, such as water if he's thirsty. If he had not been rescued eventually that treatment would have led to irreversible damage. Now, with the right therapist and a good family behind him, he'll make a full recovery. Also, a big "thank you" to the contractor that alerted the police.
As for Timothy Ferriter, he's a dumb ass. He rejected a plea deal of 2 years in prison and now faces 40 years and possibly more. He's not the brightest cookie in the crayon box, which is probably why he thought it was a good idea to build a box to imprison this poor child in. Also evidence that he likely thoroughly read the few materials he was allowed over & over again as he had no access to any other stimuli. He is clearly intelligent & very articulate, I agree. I’m just very confused as to why people seem to be so impressed with this that they are reading far more into it than what it is. It’s actually also evident, imo, of the trauma he endured. He is using impressive vocabulary terms to describe his emotional state & experiences but he’s using them in an effort to remain detached from those emotions he likely did experience. Trauma is complex but it doesn’t take a psychologist to spot when a person is still unclear about the circumstances of that trauma/abuse. It is common for a person to detach simply as a form of self preservation to not feel the complex emotions that come along with such experiences. It’s also common for a victim to truly believe themselves to be treated badly (abused) because of something they’ve done or whatever they’re being told is wrong with them. Even if no such reasons are given it is human nature to assume these things about one’s self to rationalize their mistreatment.

Let’s not say or assume unwanted. Perhaps he was wanted, but his biological parent/s were unable to care for or provide for him, or the circumstances were unsafe or not secure & stable. There’s every possibility it was a difficult decision for his biological parent/s.

I call that "monstrous and barbaric"
At this early stage in the trial I think that everyone should stop using the term 'parents".
