  • The defendant's sister, Sonya Henry, said that she believed her siblings were trying to care for their mother, but that they were in over their heads and could barely take care of themselves. Siblings Karen Murray, 49, and Michael Murray, 43, are charged with first-degree murder and aggravated neglect of a vulnerable adult in the death of their 68-year-old mother, Sheila Murray.

@courttv I think this is a crime that should be looked at in a totally different way. Instead of charging two people who tried to do what they father wanted them to do. I think there should be more programs for or elderly and families. Now this was a man who served his country and who was most likely the hierarchy of the family and when said he want his wife home, then the kids had to do just that. The dept of health and aging and adult services should of intervene. These kids knew nothing about taking care of their mother during her decline in her health. Instead of The state cutting the Home and Community based services, they should have individuals to go to homes with this type of cases.

The entire STATE should be on trial for neglecting THOUSANDS of seniors not getting proper treatments and care. There's no way a person living just at poverty level can afford the cost of home health or skilled nursing facilities. I know that I damn sure cannot. Guess who gets left holding the bag for elder family and those needing specialized care....the family does. Sometimes they are not equipped with the knowledge or equipment it takes to provide such care. These 2 "kids" are freaking innocent. You can't charge someone with a murder just for lack of knowledge. They don't look capable of caring for a dog, let alone an elder with serious medical issues.

@@virgilbryant5246if parent’s say no, that is their right. She said her mom was large, opinionated, and he was stubborn. You really do not know when it is time to intercede. The job of caring for someone to this capacity is extremely hard and does require skill and equipment. This appears to be 24/7 over years. Without relatively good care she would have died much earlier. Social workers should have become involved, if the hospitals had concerns. I just took care of an aunt who was 95. I paid full time care givers. There were constant problems even bed sores with 24 hour professional care, some because of her stubbornness, and some her size. We all did an amazing job and this was over just two years, being able to afford care givers, and yet I was exhausted. I still am and it has been 2 years. I will assume the house was so bad that this sister could not even tell the difference. As a nurse I had more than a few cases where the filthiness of the home was beyond acceptable yet it was their right. When I was caring for my aunt she had to go to the hospital for the flu, and was discharged by the hospital to rehab for 4 weeks until I took her out. I went daily to the rehab to feed her because she lost 13 pounds in a week and they were not feeding her. She lost 35 pounds that month had five falls, her spine was broken in one of the falls. In that month I walked in to find her on the floor 5 times, one time naked with no clothes in her room, she could not walk. Where were her clothes? The room was filthy. This was a Medicare supported rehabilitation center, considered the best in a city that houses one of the best medical center/universities in the nation. I took her from there to a private facility, here I stayed in her room 24/7 until she died one week later, from the injuries/problems she acquired in one month in the previous facility. What were these two to do? They had no say whatsoever in how their father chose. I reported the rehab facility to the state complete with photographs and details, they said that they saw no reason for concern. The smell of urine and feces in that facility was so strong it was unbearable. I am a nurse, my sister a lawyer and we received absolutely no help from the state in trying to expose this facility for their neglect, the neglect that was to end my aunt’s life. Our desire in reporting was in hope of making changes, so this happened to no others. We loved her as did these two who cared for their mother. My aunt had no health issues, I suspect this dear woman had a few. I think these two did the best they could.

What a sad and unfortunate situation. These two should NOT be facing murder charges. Usually your primary care doctor will get a social worker involved when an elderly person is unable to take care of themselves. They also have people come to the house to assist with their daily needs. The State can also have an healthcare aide come out for low income families. I don't know how any doctor didn't see that this family needed social services. The big sister had a responsibility to get on that phone and get her family some help. If convicted an Appeal needs to be filed immediately! She should be ashamed of herself leaving her siblings in that situation.

Because they were her caregiver And when somebody needs caregiving, like I understand because I am CNA It’s day and night every day every two hours So you almost have to move in with that person to make sure they get the level of care that they need. On the other hand, the neglect And I suspect in my opinion, abuse, physically, and mentally That this patient had to endure for probably years Is sickening. In addition to that, the sister that testifies up there, Says that she couldn’t afford healthcare or none of them could which is a Blanton lie Because the state steps in and helps That individual pay for the healthcare that they need. In addition to that, they also Will put that person in a nursing home If they cannot afford it, then state pay for that and Social Security and whatever money that you have left. So in my opinion They were probably getting paid by the state to take care of her And the level of laziness the Disregard for human Decency And the physical and mental abuse and neglect this patient had to endure her last days of her life is gross. I don’t feel bad for her. I don’t feel bad for the sister on the stand because if She really cared Her mother She would’ve came and visited and Most likely She never did.

In my opinion, charging these two obviously non-capable, children with murder is a) cruel and b) not a method of helping anyone. I DO believe that their Mother deserved a lot better treatment...dont get me wrong, and this should NEVER be permiteed, but the problem is the system...not the individual situation. Why had nobody ever checked on this poor woman's condition at home? Doctors knew she had 2 strokes and was going to need full care, yet nothing was arranged for her and she was never checked up on.
This entire situation is absolutely heartbreaking and wrong. Trying to punish 2 of these womens children isnt the answer though.

Taking care of a disabled parent or any family member, 24/7 is very overwhelming, exhausting, and you get burned out quickly when there's no one else coming in to help for longer than 1-2 hours a day, as home health nurses do, if they even had that much support. And if the college-educated daughter was just visiting on occasion to look at her mother and say a few words without giving her siblings some relief, by pitching in, helping to pick up things strewn around, doing laundry, dishes, and getting her hands dirty bathing/changing their mother while she's there, that is just unbelievable. And she's as guilty of neglect and dereliction as her siblings are accused of who were there everyday, trying to care for their mother AND father until his death.

@angiebervinkle1575, good for you. I felt the same way about my mother. First, it was just me for more than 2 months, day and night. My dad and brother did what they could to help out, but they were inexperienced, and guys who don't naturally have a knack and attention to details for taking care of someone else. I worked in the field and knew how to care for my mother. But even being experienced, it is very overwhelming when there is no one else coming to relieve you for even 2-3 hours.
Initially, some of my siblings promised to send money for gas, as I was driving roundtrip 70 miles approximately daily. But I explained to them that money was not the main issue. I needed help.
So, I can totally relate to this brother and sister's circumstances. It doesn't seem that they were intentionally neglectful. It seems that they just didn't know and perhaps didn't have the needed resources and support from Home Healthcare services, regular doctor's, and nurses' home visits. Which are all necessary when caring for someone at home in their mother's condition. It's just very sad.

Her siblings were grown as well, they weren't mentally strong enough to move out on their own and probably needed the guidance of their father! What I see is the situation was too much for them to handle with the mother and an elderly father who had health issues of his own. They were a family simply trying to survive on their own in their own home. Ive seen... as im sure we all know atleast 1 person or family of people who live extremely nasty. That one yard on the block thats atrocious, unmowed and trash everywhere in the yard, that one kid in school who smells extremely bad and clothes always dirty! Let's not all sit on our internet throwns and act as if this story is too far fetched to imagine. They didn't have money for health care as the majority of the population don't, father living on a small retirement check and probably their disability checks, and 2 mentally challenged grown adult children to take care of. As far as the mother's ailments, yes, she should've had home health care, at the least, to do home health visits to feed, clean & bathe her and to provide medication. They probably didn't know the state will fund that for a certain amount of hours a week or month to ensure she's getting some care. The father was either too honorable, like most older people are, to allow people into his home or he, himself was too embarrassed to allow someone in the home to see their living conditions. I've worked at a moving company before as a packer and have moved SEVERAL people, military & civilians, who lived in these conditions. It's more common than you think!
Do I believe it's murder, no! Was it neglect, yes. At some point, they should've atleast gotten a home health nurse. The father's insurance and/or Medicaid or Medicare pays for it.

This is a sad situation. This woman clearly didn’t have a relationship with her family. The fact that the dad preferred to have the children with mental illness to care for mom instead of sending her to the sister says a lot. Listen to how this woman speaks about her family, especially here mothers health, it’s a lot of “I think “ she doesn’t know. Dad was power of attorney over mom.

I honestly feel that she was ashamed of her family. I get that they were dirty. I would bet there was some type of abuse and neglect growing up. I bet she was counting her days until she could escape. She left and rarely came home. I'm sure she never brought her husband home. This is an extremely sad case. She disassociated as most of us do. I worked in a nursing home as a nursing assistant. It is not easy to care for anyone who is bedridden and needs 24-hour care, especially for a patient with curvature. It is obvious that their father had the power of Attorney and all her healthcare decision-making is, therefore his responsibility to provide her with the right care suitable for her condition by asking for the appropriate help from the aging community. It is cruel of him to subject his adult children who are not trained to handle such a difficult task even people who are trained for this kind of job some children do not want to see their parent's private bodies. It is unfair on the part of the obstinance father and the cognitive daughter to impose that burden on them.
