Oh good choice I noticed these were performing less because most of your viewers are from shorts
Everyone needs a Lord Erskine in their lives.
He was probably the father of her baby.
@@mrsquietmusic6413 It’s either him or Somerset
@@iateyourfather92 my thoughts exactly.
Also thought he was fully in love with him/her.
@@Inprogress_of_newbeginingsher*
I don’t think the doctor was a “complete fraud, a complete fake”. The only thing he concealed was parts of his body that would block all pathways to a career he was clearly born for (and had every intention of pursuing, and was v successful at). Whatever the gender identity of this doctor was, I’d argue that in the big picture what really matters is how many people he helped with his skills as a practitioner of medicine - exactly what a doctor should do.
I believe he did this due to the inability to do things as a woman. You must admit she/he was brilliant. To go on to become a surgeon and renowned.
Just go's to prove, transvestites have been around throughout history... 😂
Witch burn her
@@jasonbrown3632 *goes
She's a she lol
Just use they/them if you don't know ig
As far as the cap on Florence Nightengale's head: When a lady was out in public, she was supposed to wear a hat, not a cap. The cap was for indoors only or when at home in your own garden. It was very good narration for an interesting story!
ohhh thanks for explaining! I was so confused haha
A man wouldn’t have known that. That should have given her away.
@@PremiumUpWhy wouldn't a man know that? Men have wives, sisters, mother's, etc. They interacted with and/or saw women every day. They'd notice if a social faux pas with their attire.
@@andyyjiangI am confused why hidden story's is not a Netflix series
Somerset probably knew, therefore the claims of liking them eachother, them living together, james having pregnancy marks and him being able to hide it easily as it was something the mayor could have done
wow this makes a lot of sense actually. Could be, I can't see any other way how you hide a pregnancy while working long hours as a surgeon
Probably but does Somerset had an adopted child during that time or have a child and claim it was his and another woman/wife might back up your theory
Dr. James might've had an abortion in that case.
@@a_raichub james having had an abortion doesn't make sense if the cleaning lady really did see stretch marks on her abdomen as possible signs of pregnancy. I would imagine her having been in her 3rd trimester already for those marks to show, and pretty sure abortion would be considered a very dangerous choice in that scenario... I think, her having had a possible still born baby makes more sense... or at least a very late miscarriage... these are ofc assuming that no baby survived the pregnancy.
While still a teenager, it is believed that Margaret was raped by an uncle. She gave birth to a baby, Juliana, who was raised by her mother.
You truly are a great storyteller! And I’m so glad that I have followed you to Hidden Stories!!! I am a nurse and felt so sad hearing about our dear Florence Nightingale being chastised publicly by Dr. Barry.
I'm so surprised I haven't seen this story before. It's so awe inspiring
I agree. As a teen, I read about women that succeeded in a “man’s” profession. I didn't know anything about this story. He does such a great job researching the facts.
A conspiracy to make the British Government/Military not look so bad for their sexist policies and beliefs She was not given the honors she would have if she hadn’t been exposed.
Not only another interesting piece of history but a piece of history so well told. The enthusiasm you have telling us about this story is so very authentic. You have a talent .
This is an interesting story. The Doctors’s ability to conceal their biggest secret for one’s entire life time in the military no less is an impressive feat. Nice video!
I absolutely love the longer stories! Keep them coming. I had never heard this and it was very interesting.
hearing you describe her arrogant hot-tempered personality it actually reminds me of some surgeons. they tend to be kind to patients but brutal to coworkers. perhaps this type of work is hard on their nerves
They're natural perfectionists. A lot like Gordon Ramsay, you probably heard of him shout at customers just once but he'll scream at the cooks everyday non stop
Doctors, specially surgeons, have to take life and death near instant decisions, based on their knowledge and experience. This firmness and confidence in their choice does not fit well with people of diverging opinion, all the more other doctors / surgeons.
Underrated af documentaries
Another great story and very interesting bit of history. It's sad she never would've been able to attend university, reach such positions or had so many accomplishments if she remained as a woman. Best is as a niece of Jerry Berry, she may have gotten married off to a wealthy family.
As for why women were attracted to him, it wasn't the appearance... women are attracted to confidence and power, which she as Dr. James Berry had plenty of confidence to carry this off and definitely plenty of power through the connections and positions held.
FYI women are very attractive to men with feminine look or women who dress like men. 😂 Trust me this is true.
Well no shit she did it for that reason.
Could have been all of the above. who knows?
Also some women are trained at birth to marry rich influencial men, for money not for love 😂
I really like your long form content, please do more of these
thank you! I'll be doing a longer story 8am Wednesday every single week from here on out :) I'm really excited
@@andyyjiang Well Andy I am excited too, wish you all the best
Nightingale is a pioneer herself she was a statistician who did research and can be single handedly held responsible for the decrease in the spread of infections from soldier to soldier during treatments and surgery.
Nightingale brought forth the statistics and research that simple hand washing could prevent infection
It very well could be that Berry resented Nightingale as a doctor toward a nurse BECAUSE nightingale was a bit of an upstart herself.
She wouldn't hesitate to get in a man's face either.
Not to minimize it, but berry was engaging a cat-fight with nightingale
That's my thoughts as an RN
I'm team Nightingale 😂
Dr. Barry had to dress up as a man in order to get to where she was, so I bet she was resentful that a woman was able to rise to a high level without having to hide. Barry no doubt had a lot of internal strife regarding her womanhood being hidden away. She couldn't marry and have children. She couldn't express herself honestly.
I think the reason for the post-pregnancy stretch marks is that they might've been pregnant before the whole Barry thing. Back in that time period teenage pregnancy was very common
All his videos are insane
Yes always
Andy does pick good stories, he’s entertaining telling them and he follows Ken Burns photography documentary style.
agreed

Wow, what an amazing story. You need to write a book someday! I'm so glad you chose to pour your researching and passion into bigger videos.
I can only imagine where humanity would be without Barry's hidden identity, how far behind we would be in women's rights. I have to assume that because it was revealed that Barry was a woman, that showed people the potential women could have and moved towards a more equal access to opportunity. Thank you for bringing these people into light!
I would read that book
This was so interesting and well told! I enjoyed so much how you showed how baffling and, at times, crazy, the twists and turns of her life's story unfolded. Well done, Andy! ❤
A wonderful job of sharing, Andy. You do such a great job!
Another awesome bit of history! 😮 I am addicted to learning about stories and people I never would’ve otherwise known about-keep up the awesome work! ❤
These long stories are so engaging! I can't believe it hasn't blown up yet, these are stories that I would've never known without you. So please keep making them, I'm sure more people will enjoy it aswell
First time viewer here. Whenever I need to get things done around the house I always listen to Bailey Sarian. For a long time she was the only one who I could listen to without watching and grasp the story. You my friend have accomplished the same! The pacing is incredible, and the details, juicy. Capturing and conveying a story is a gift, and I’m glad you share it. Thanks!
You should totally make a podcast with these stories - keep up the great work
Also if you shake your phone his background shakes
I appreciate it man! I have a podcast already haha, it’s called Hidden Stories 🙂
I love this story ❤ Thank you for researching this fantastic story and how you presented it in the video.
Absolutely lovin' the longer videos!!
You're one of the very few youtubers that I would say is underrated... So much enthusiasm and effort put into this, and you're content is so interesting and fun to listen to. Great work!
Great video! I loved the more casual tone rather than the usual formal tone that other RUclipsrs use for informational video like these. Keep up the great work man 👍
Perhaps Barry was jealous that Nightingale could exist as a woman in the broad daylight and all the hiding and lying she (Barry) had to do was taking a toll on her. Mental health suffers under constant stress.
Ok so, I’ve always been a history nerd who loves videos like this but absolutely HATES monotone sounding people I adore this!! I love how you express your love for these stories! 💛💛💛
You are the best, keep up the amazing work!
This is the British Mulan
This is brilliant - your researching, passion in delivery. Epic! I came here after the short, curious to know what could be Dr Barry's secret - you did not disappoint! Always love your content - Thank you.
You are so freaking adorable. I love how you talk with your hands. Not only are they good stories, and you have a great voice, you’re so much fun to watch.
Video I am waiting for every week ❤️ Thanks for another interesting story Andy!
Great story. I've heard about other similar stories in which women disguised themselves in order to work as a man to feed their family, or to go to war, etc. I love these kinds of stories where people do amazing things for the time period, that could have gotten them imprisoned or killed, and yet they did what people said they could never do.
You have a gift Andy. Excellent story telling.
I haven't watched any of your other longer videos (yet), but this story was definitely a good choice for one as there were many intersting things to tell about him/ his life.
I love the way you tell your stories, it really pulls the listener in and i am hooked! Thank you for all your work Andy.
So excited to get long form videos from you! Keep up the awesome!
You found another great one to share! Thank you!
Just watched the teaser it worked I love the longer videos
Another super interesting video. Keep it up. You're doing an awesome job.
Man Andy love your new format. Maybe format isn't quite the right term but this longer story was just wonderful to listen to and I do hope you keep up longer stories of the bizarre such as this one. You have a great gift of Storytelling and I encourage you to keep it up and not that I don't like your shorts cuz I've been entertained by them as well but if your production abilities allow it I would definitely keep up doing the longer format stories. Thank you so much for the entertaining and informative and educational topics you bring forth. You have a great day sir and I look forward to see your next video
omg andy this is rlly exciting! hope these new videos do well ❤❤

These are amazing
Plot twist: Florence Nightingale was the baby daddy.😂
Great job, Andy. I love your free-form content!🎉

Great story enjoyed learning about her/him
Bro that portrait at 4:15 💀💀💀
love your narration bro mad entertaining bro bless
I’m from Cape Town and I didn’t know about this , thanks for the info.
Many pregnancies, the baby sits so far back that the abdomen doesn't stretch much. But if Dr. Barry had stretch marks, the baby most certainly sat in front of the organs. Very curious how Dr. Barry managed to hide it, and who the father was.
Loving the Mr.Ballen format!❤
You are the best storyteller, keep up the good work 😊
The reason he was so arrogant may be the fact that he (well she) was super uncomfortable all the time 😅 I mean just imagine, it's August, it's super hot and there you are all dressed up in layers of clothes, boobs smashed to your chest and on your period?? I mean I get frustrated just by thinking about that. Also I bet it wasn't easy being surrounded by all these misogynistic men. Also, I loove your channel and the comments, everyone is so invested in this and full of thoughts and theories. Keep it up!
Me, having hella stretch marks and no kids... 😅
You’re up there with storytellers like Mr. Ballen and Thoughty2. Keep up the amazing work!
Bro you got the best stories.
Thats one of the most fascinating and incredible stories I've ever heard.
Does anyone else get the feeling that Lord Erskine had a crush on James?
