I've done a fair amount of backpacking, some in 90 plus degree weather, and it always seems to be a lesson in how much suffering you are willing to put up with for the rewards. You guys have taken suffering to a whole new level. Hats off to you both.
Now THAT'S a trail angel! Let's hikers stay for free. Max kudos to her! And as for the police stopping you, Matt, my guess is (in these troubled times) some people want to ensure that Taters is not "hiking under duress" and wishes to give her an intervention to "flee her captor" (the Evil Most OKish Thru Hiker is an obvious cover for E-vil!) if necessary. Sad that people even think that these days, but there are enough instances that it is not outside the realm of the possible. Plus, who in their RIGHT MINDS would hike on cover-less roads in 100+ degree heat? Probably checking for mental issues! 😁 If they but knew . . . Roll with it guys! And Hike ON! (If you can after that Burritto-Mucho-Huge-o!) Tortoise
For many years, I have wanted to take a cross country road trip by car. Thank you for walking it for me. I’m getting to see a lot of the things and places that I have to travel through.
I had a Wendy's call the police on me when I was sitting in my van in the parking lot using their wifi. I went through the drive through later to get a frosty. Now I park in the McDonalds parking lot next door to use Wendy's wifi!
Cimarron is where my niece's husband did his first teaching stint. Said good people lived there. A lot of big feedlots in the area thus the heavy traffic.
A section like this, with little sleep and extremely hot conditions is really one of the ultimate relationship tests. It seems like if you can survive this... you can survive anything.
I like the police chasing the vegan, funny stuff. I would hope the call ins are more of safety and wellbeing check. Maybe because tater being a female the locals are more curious and want to make sure all are there by choice.
This day ends well food, safety ,rest and " that bearded man who's making the little girl in pigtails walk in 10O° heat"( maybe that's why the Po-Po comes) is now able to be cool ,eat and sleep ( edit later) resting feet and innards. Thank you kindness of strangers What a cool bed and breakfast in !!! America all the way. Be safe you all.
Earlier this year I rode my motorcycle from KC to Cali all (with a large detour in Colo.) on US 50 Hwy. Some great small towns, some bustling and some ghostly. Our problem wasn’t heat p, it was cold, got snowed on at elevation! Great vids! Stay safe.
Drop the breakfast bar and move away! I'm glad your interactions with the police have all ended well and I'm very glad you got out of the heat for a few hours. P.S. that may be the biggest burrito I've ever seen. Thanks!
Lots of feed lots in and meat packing in that area. You will see more when you get closer to Garden City. You missed some of the big feed lots by going north and not on 400 to the south. I know your video's are a few days behind your progress so by now you are enjoying that absolute emptiness of far west Kansas. Fun fact, Kansas is the only state without a natural lake. All man made. Another fun fact is that while there are tourist adds for Nebraska and OK on TV, I have never seen one for Kansas. Oh, and by now you went by the pheasant and qual hatcheries if you are on 400. All uphill from where you are.
Headline reads; "Hiker Hunger Cured by Monstrous Burrito". Being that breakfast is generally my favorite meal of the day, it's quite the relief to find out it's not illegal. If it were, cops and donut shops might both be in trouble. Sorry, couldn't resist, my dad was a cop for 20 yrs. A beautiful suite to spend a day/night in to catch up on some sleep. Looked like a pretty good place to zero in if you're going to do such a thing.
Hope you are surviving the heat okay. If you are familiar with Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," the events in that book take place in Garden City, KS, where you are headed next!
We've had a gal come up to our rural Kansas house and ask for gas since they ran out of gas. Gave them gas can. Too suspicious so my wife called it in. Turns out they stole pickup in California or such. Got my gas can with gas back minus gas can cap. Another time I get phone call from 911 and says that 2 guys jumped from ditch to scare patrol car and they might have ran into my house! Gave permission to enter house and check it out. One cop comes back after dark searching for his lost cell phone. All of a sudden there's a person in our yard!
There is no doubt that there are the occasional mentally ill or otherwise ill intent folks everywhere. More around civilization vs the remote areas if you ask me. It is somewhat ironic that no one wants to walk through a given area because the locals are unfriendly but the locals are unfriendly because they aren’t used to seeing people walk through
It was a small town most likely everyone knows everyone. The police must of wanted to meet the vegetarian. Something they dont see everyday. And a California vegetarian at that. After you announced Taters was a vegetarian I bet they got on the phone. I was thinking this would happen sooner or later.
Everyone calls the police now. I'm a step father to black children and when I'm out with them I always get eyeballs. Police have been called on me for parking at trail heads and for suspicious activity. Also because of increased crime in our area I have called the police on people cutting through our yard. Sorry for being a narc. I would agree that you shouldn't have had the call on you. Not breakfast people as you said.
In my gainfully employed days I once had the police called on me because I was sitting in my jeep beside a park wearing business casual and taking a conference call with a client. Apparently some mother in the park found any sort of solo male worrisome
Ah yes, when I searched on Montezuma it returned the town in Colorado. Have I mentioned states reuse the same city names far too often? We are already across the border into Colorado leaving Holly for Lamar today
This entire series is just one long argument for NOT doing the ADT for the following reasons. 1) Long boring road walks 2) Locals are a hazard 3) The ADT has obviously done a piss poor job of creating awareness on the route 4) If you are trying to eat at all healthy, you're screwed 5) Water is a huge issue 6) Unless you are a popular RUclipsr you can expect little support in large sections 7) As a POC, and just based on your experiences, I have doubts that interactions with locals and LEO's would be as amicable. I'm glad you're doing it though and happy to watch your progress and experience. It has allowed me to cross it off my thru-hiking list and focus on better trails. So thank you for that. I'm sure things will get much better as you push into Colorado and points west.
Quite a few people put a lot of time and effort into improving the ADT, every time we can move it off the paved roads we do but that's a slow process in places like Kansas. In July our Kansas coordinator walked some of the trail there trying to find better alternatives. We are aware that the trail is still not well known and at last Monday's monthly meeting we discussed exactly that and what we might do both in terms of letting small towns and PDs know about the trail. Last year we started a 'Trail Town' project where we invite towns and cities to provide facilities for hikers and bicyclists, we have several interested and are ramping up that project. As well as being a VP on the board I am the Utah coordinator, in the last week I have driven over 1000 miles, a lot of it on bumpy dirt/rock/sand roads, putting out water caches for this year's thru-hikers, taking me past 2000 for the year and I still have some more to do. I often go out and meet the hikers on the trail as well. Everybody associated with the ADT except our admin is a volunteer, we have families, jobs and other interests as well.
This seems a bit needlessly negative. I understand not caring for roadwalks but they’re a reality for anything involving real distance beyond the big three and the vast majority haven’t been bad except for short sections. A lot of the Kansas farm roads we’ve had to ourselves and quite enjoyed watching storms off in the distance and such. People are convinced locals are a threat everywhere and yet we meet nice folks wherever we go. Getting healthy food isn’t any worse than any other trail and I’m probably eating better here than I did the AT. Also personally I like the aspect of meeting people a lot more on the lesser done trails like this because you get to make a bigger impact and interact with them more vs when you’re one of the crowd on the AT / PCT
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Related question for you Matt but are you tracking how many stops/stays you've gotten as a direct result of this series/vlog? I've found myself wondering how much rougher this would be if someone didnt have your social media exposure. Take care my dude.
@natea1042 that is actually a really great question. Because while we are a small channel we do get additional help not avaliable to others just because we put ourselves out there. A lot of the trail angels like the lady in Cimarron are actually listed on the Hiking America maps and we contact them like anyone else. Some of the major stays like Dori or Sharon help almost everyone who comes through. While we have had some specific to our channel the majority of those are just folks coming out because they want to say hi and meet us. We always try and make time for those folks since we love seeing how our silly little hobby channel brings enjoyment to people. Often they bring water or a Sandwhich or something like that but I have a quirk where I always want to have a plan to make it through an area without any help like that needed and we just take them as nice mood boosters
@natea1042 we are also a bit different than a lot of hikers in that we don’t view constant help as as much of a positive. We enjoy meeting folks and we’ve been helped massively by the right person at the right time but by default we’re happier in a tent tucked away in the woods somewhere vs sleeping on someone’s couch. I’ve skipped more trail angels than I’ve visited both this year and last on the Mississippi. I think Zach for example has had a lot more house stays than we have based on his socials. Also I’ve said no to literally weeks of slackpacking assistance while others have used that very extensively. Having said that the stays on this trip have been some of the most memorable parts so I’ve been somewhat fighting against my own nature.
I certainly hope that's the last time you guys have to deal with law enforcement. It still happens to me fairly regularly, not entirely sure why. The police are usually pretty hood about it but I have had a couple of cranky ones who needed to run my ID 3 times and search me and my bag.
It is like getting into a disagreement with the TSA. Even if you are technically/legally in the right they have the ability to make your day very unpleasant.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes there is a big difference between having to jump thru some bs security theater put on by the tsa so you can fly to where you need to go, and freely walking around out in public.
