- We visit the historic, old West town of Dodge City, Kansas. In the late 1800's the city attracted gunfighters, gamblers and brothel owners, earning its nickname "The Wickedest Town In The Old West" and of course the famous phrase, "Get The Heck Out Of Dodge".

My husband is deceased now . He had planned on going to Dodge City when he retired. He loved the old western shows. I love what you guys are doing. I don't travel anymore so this is how I travel through watching your travels.

GOOD OLE DODGE CITY! Dodge City is Very Special to me...
I followed a man I thought I was madly in love with to Dodge City when I was 19 years old.
We drove all night from Nebraska and ended up in a boarding room type of place with a shared bathroom and it was an huge old, but beautiful home.
It was very clean and lovely.
The man I was with swept me away from my folks and got me far enough away from everything I ever knew... Then tried to keep me locked up all day in the room while he worked. I would sit in the big window seat and watch all the people go by.
The woman who owned the house we were staying in saw me in that window everyday and opened my room door he had locked. She said what is going on here? I was just a kid I was afraid. That lady saved me and helped me call my mama. Miss Irene I will never forget her... I thankfully left that mean man and went home to my family.
I lived in Dodge City for 19 days.
It's such a beautiful place. And Garden City is about 50 or so miles away.
It was so wonderful to see this place again. ❤
A piece of my heart is in Dodge City.
I learned a valuable life lesson there.
Kinda funny, I never think about the guy I thought I loved, however I often think about Dodge City and Miss Irene 🤔 ♡

I grew up in Garden City and have been to Dodge many times.
When did you live there?
The last time I visited Dodge City was in August 1962 with my parents and my younger sister. I was only 14 at the time. Things have really changed in 60 years!!! I was really impressed back then, especially with "Boot Hill," and always wanted to go back---this time with the wife!!! Unfortunately, both my parents and my sister have passed on. I also remember seeing the Santa Fe "El Capitan" passenger train pull into the old train station. Amtrak's Southwest Chief now serves the city, but the original Santa Fe glory of the train is lost. I also grew up watching Gunsmoke on our black and white television. Sweet memories from my past!!!

I went to Dodge late August 1962 from Colorado Springs. The Long Branch saloon was quite narrow. There was a road outside, not the grass, where I got on the stagecoach for a ride around town. I well remember the Santa Fe trains. At the bottom of the road where we lived was the Rock Island RR that shared the station with the Denver & Rio Grande. The engineer let me climb aboard one day and gave me a tour of the loco. Both my parents were born the same year Wyatt Earp died; 1929. A friend in high school-- his great uncle was Ben Kilpatrick aka, the Tall Texan, who rode with Butch Cassidy and Sundance.
Sorry about those close to you passing on, hope you can look back fondly. Lost my dad unexpectedly this year and he loved old movies especially westerns

Great job on the video,I lived there for 67 years and you know more about the town than ninety percent of the folks that there now.I grew up in the house @10.40 on the video and remember stacking all of those railroad ties with my brother for our parents fifty years ago.My brother lived in the big blue house across the street back then.They are all gone now so thanks for the memories it all still looks the same.I hope to get back there soon.

I live downtown, and have lived in Dodge all my life. Thankful to see this video and see what more I have not seen from the town. Hope you had a great stay.
We had a great time there. I was really excited to visit - I have wanted to since I was a kid.
I was born in this town, Dodge City, we moved to Oklahoma, just before my 5th birthday, to another historical town, String Town, where my paternal grandparents lived and where Bonnie and Clyde, stayed for 3 days and partied with my relatives, before they were gunned down. I remember my brother taking me into the Dodge House, once and was in awe of the round, red velvet seaty, they called it, that was in the center of the lobby. I was 10, when I visited last and down town, looks very much the same as I remember it. It’s still amazing to me and Gunsmoke will always be my favorite show.

My wife is from Dodge City. We live in Kansas City but are frequent visitors because she still has family (including her mom, brother and numerous cousins etc...) still living there. We usually stay on the West side of town, at the Casino Hotel. The overriding thing I remember about the town is the SMELL. There are TWO slaughterhouses to the south east on the outskirts of the town, so the smell of rendering can be strong everywhere in town especially on weekdays.

@@dankelly5150 Cool! If you’re wanting to visit old West towns, in addition to Tombstone and Dodge City you might want to check out Deadwood, South Dakota. It is awesome. They have street gunfights daily and it’s full of amazing history. I did a video if it as well as Tombstone.

Considering that no clear evidence of ghosts or ghostly shenanigans have EVER been recorded and verified, he would be fine. All the TV shows of ghost chasers and investigators became such a joke with the screaming, running like they say something....and the obvious staging of some "ghost talk" or tossing a board by one of the guys off camera I came to the obvious conclusion that the whole idea was just ridiculous. All the tech, all the people looking and investigating for so many years and STILL no evidence. "I felt a cold spot" or "it felt like someone was watching"....too funny.
You didnt go far enough for the feed lot overlook. It's past the airport off the highway. The trail tracks are on the walkway, covered by special grates that protect them from the weather.

Those houses that look half in the ground were probably built in stages. The owners would build out a basement, oftentimes with a flat type roof, and would move into the basement while they saved up to finish the next level of the house. Sometimes the fortunes of the owners changed and they were unable to finish it.

My Grandpa William Earl Hemmingway was the manager of the regional office of Prudential Insurance. In the 1960s through the early 1980s their office was on one of the upper floors of the Union National Bank of Dodge City.
As per the habit I've developed, I accompanied you both to Dodge City. Nicole, like all women of worth, pushes back and stands her ground. It's also clear you care for her a good deal. Loved the statues of the great men of courage of Dodge City's early years. Did you say Nebraska next? Excellent! Wherever you go, I'm there too.

Hello from England.! I have been watching your videos with great interest. Over here we only tend to see the cities or celebrity BS I've always wanted to see the real america where regular people live. I'll probably never make it now, but I wanted to visit the US and just tour around staying in motels, see the parts we don't often see.
Kansas is the only state in the Midwest that I haven't visited.Dodge City looks interesting.I love the history of this city.
The suburban half of Kansas City that is in Kansas is just as large and dense as any large metro in the US. You dont have to drive out to the Great Plains to add KS to your list. There are tourist attractions in that area.

I am from Larned.. 60 miles from Dodge. My dad and grandfather bought cattle at the cattle sale in Dodge. Huge part of my life
I am from Kansas City. Did not have the opportunity to see it in full view. This is a great video. I think Dennis Hopper put that statue in his town in memory of the movie "Giant", that he became popular in. What a great era it was, to perform with all of those big movie stars back then.
Best time to come to Dodge City is during Dodge City Days, 7 days of festivities and a pretty fun time, concerts are daily, clubbing until 2am and plus other things going on after that as well. Lasts from July to the first week of August typically.
Great video, LS. I remember visiting Dodge City as a kid many years ago when Mom & Dad took us kids out that way. It has changed quite a bit though since the early 60's when I was there. Might be time to re-visit Wyatt Earp's old stomping grounds in the near future. Nice to see Nicole with you on this trip, she is so cute with a great personality and you guys always make me laugh and smile during your travels. Another cool video. Although I'm not watching them in any particular order this is of real interest. I love anything to do with westerns, so to see the gunfight, statues of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and to be in Dodge City is amazing to me. I'm in the UK and I'll never get to see the places you visit so to see what you're filming is the next best thing. Well done and thanks

If you haven't been to Hays KS ,.or Manhattan KS., also Abiline KS. Home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. You should visit these places as well. There is a lot of history all over the State. I saw your video about your visit to Wichita. I hope you both have enjoyed your visit. It's a big state.
And it's a CRIMINALLY underrated state! Kansas isn't the best state, but there is a lot of history there, from the Oregon Trail, to Lecompton, to the Brown vs. Board museum in Topeka. There's a lot of natural beauty too, lots of pretty sights and the Flint Hills. And it's a state with some of the nicest people in the whole Midwest, a place where people always treated me with respect. People gotta stop sleeping on Kansas.
Been to hays for October fest and Manhattan for fake patty’s both were tons of fun I like Manhattan better.

I came here to say the same thing…. There are many of these in Missouri as well. A popular design during the energy crisis of the 70’s.
This town was where my mom was born and raised. That was 1924. Somewhere in the latter part of the famous "Dust Bowl" years (1930 - 1936) made her folks move to the eastern part of the state for economic reasons, let alone the great "Dust Bowl" effects.
The town has fantastic history by its "rough history" of the later 1800's.
I didn't know that movie actor Dennis Hopper was born in Dodge. He had a several movies I remember him being in: Rebel Without a Cause (with the infamous James Dean); Giant (again with Dean, and with Rock Hudson & Elizabeth Taylor); Gunfight at O.K. Corral (with Burt Lancaster & Kirk Douglas); The Sons of Katie Elder (with "Duke" Wayne); Cool Hand Luke (with Paul Newman & George Kennedy); Hang 'Em High (with Clint Eastwood); of course the famous Easy Rider (with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson); True Grit (again with the "Duke") and, Hoosiers (which he finally was nominated for the Academy Awards "Best Supporting Actor"... which, I think he should have won that year in the 1987 movie)
What else can I say about the famous Dodge City: that my mom (mother of seven children she had) was born on the famous Front Street.
Someday, love to see the town. Maybe have a memorial birthday celebration with several of my siblings, if not all of them. (Now, that be kinda cool!)

From what I understand the homes in Dodge city are set low in the ground because of the danger from tornados. Very unique design. :)
That's a good idea.
as a dodge city resident who was an intern for one of the construction companies here, we actually get tornadoes so seldomly that we don't take it into account; actually, we take rain and floods more into account, as well as wind. Most houses here don't even have basements; the mall has a community storm shelter in the basement and there are several more in churches around the city.
Definitely tornadoes do move through there often..well that's my opinion I just hear of them more than topeka area where I am

I’m from Kansas and we used to have one of those old wagons on our farm when I was young. I’m pretty sure that one at the museum is authentic. I’m in my 60’s. We used to play on it all of the time. We had all sorts of old farm equipment that would be in museums now. We thought nothing of it back then.

I stayed in a campground in Dodge City in my RV passing thru one time. A rather eccentric older lady owned / ran the place. It was a nice campground, interesting town. The place was right across from the RR tracks, which I enjoy when camping. Love the sound of a train in the middle of the night.

The name of the wagon in the museum is Goliath and they built the building around it
In winter of 56/57, my senior year of high school in Wichita, I hitched from Wichita and through Dodge on the way to Colorado but, getting snowbound on the highway, was taken by highway patrol back to Dodge, where I was put on a Greyhound bus back to Wichita. I sat in a moldy overstuffed chair in the lounge of an old hotel, bored out of my mind with a Monkey Ward catalogue, to wait some hours for my bus. Near me was a row of old guys in overstuffed chairs. and we all just staired out the high windows at the blowing snow. Each one of them twidled his thumbs. The thumbs would go one way for awhile, then the other way, and the conversation went like this: "Looks like it'll snow a bit." "A few days, I'd say." "Could go a week." "Maybe." "Might quit tomorrow." "Maybe so. Or just three or four days." "Yeh, looks like it'll snow a bit." And the thumbs would go back and forth. Of course, this was after the town had been tamed.

You'll love Nebraska. I can tell you all about it. May I suggest a starting point? Cambridge Nebraska is home to the W. H. Faling House. It's on the national registry of historic buildings. My family once lived there (1955 - 1959). It's magnificent.

The recommended bars and grill I look forward to seeing. The drinks are interesting (I don't drink), and especially the food. Nice way to settle the dust after driving around. Also don't take away the hotel review. Keep those videos coming!

Ive been to the old Didge City and went into the saloon that is on Gunsmoke and rode on the red stagecoach.look at the muriel in the saloon on the floor.awesome.and i went to boothill cemetery and watched the gun shootout show awesome place im from Arkansas

I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed Dodge City. I spent quite a bit time there during my childhood for school and sports. Also, and especially during the hot months, just follow your nose and you'll find a feedlot. They're not hard to miss😂

I live in Amarillo, took my son to see Dodge and it wasn't quite as fun as y'all experienced but hen again, he and I arrived on a Saturday night and most everything's closed Sunday. What shocked me more than anything was the tax rate at 17 percent. We did go to the old fort outside of town then headed back to ol Amarillo. Great video caught most of what we missed.

In the 5 months I was in Dodge City it snowed from November to March. There was nothing moving the streets were pretty much dirt everywhere the main thoroughfare through town was about the only thing that was really paved. The rest of it was sludge ice and snow. Old Dodge if you go there in the winter which would be between November and March is practically a ghost town. The only person I saw there was the attendant in the souvenir shop! And he said that I should have came during the summer so maybe that was my fault. But it does have five Slaughter houses with great steaks. If you're ever in town go to a place called The Silver Spur if it's still open? Like I said I was there 20 years ago. Happy travels!🤔

Back about 1980, 81, 82, my buddies and I would drive up to Ingalls Kansas to pheasants hunt. One of the guys uncle had a wheat farm. We would drive to Dodge City to have dinner. The best I remember there was a restaurant called the Sliver Spur. Best dang prime rib I've ever had. Gee, it hard to believe that was 40 years ago.
They always had a good buffet too
A few lesser known gems in town are the 2nd Avenue art guild, which is an art gallery run and owned by local artists! Another is cowboy capital bar and grill which has the best steaks in town

Thanks for showing. Doc Holiday is from Georgia. Born in Griffin , Ga. Some even say that he is buried beside his dad in a unmarked grave there in Griffin. The graves are marked with a historical sign. There is even a museum dedicated to Doc Holiday in Griffin. Many movies were even shot there. One movie shot there was '' Driven Mrs Daisy''. Shalom
The Santa Fe Trail went through my hometown, Larned. There is a Santa Fe Trail Center there. Barracks and old fort
Yep that Fort is pretty cool. Went there on a Saturday a few years ago during the summer. They had all the reenactors there.

I'm from Illinois and am thinking of moving to Kansas. I'd like to get a small farm. My grandfather took me out west my junior summer of high school and again after I graduated. I loved Kansas for some reason. I moved to Colorado for 10 years moved back to Illinois for 20 years now and I believe its nearing time to spend some years in Kansas. Dodge city looks lovely. Marysville Kansas is a cool place too. And Mankato.
In Nebraska see a real cattle sale barn at Norfolk. Nearby Niobrara State park has some great cabin rentals call to seek a cancellation nearby Ashfall a fossil find people come from Europe and China to vies.. All the state parks have amazing cabin rentals cheap including a posh glamping one. The Air Museum near Omaha is great and the Safari zoo is a in car trip. Also visit nearby Mahoney and Louisville park as well as Platte River state park again great cabins. Hard to score cabins they are cheap but call and ask if there is a cancellations. Two Rivers near Omaha has Cabose cabins you can rent. Enjoy I love your rolling commentary and Nicole is for sure the star of the show!

I imagine those western shows such as Gunsmoke are very good shows. Also, I think in Alaska, the homes there are a little underground for better warmth since it is almost cold there year round. These brick streets are pretty cool.
