This is the worst one. It makes both prequels and originals pointless. Retcons TLJ. I don’t like TLJ but retconing it? wasn’t right it’s disrespectful for everyone who worked on it. It’s the only SW movie I left feeling empty. I wasn’t even angry.

I watched Last Jedi for the second time as I watched your sequel retrospective. And wow, you have completely transformed my view on TLJ. I still am not quite sure what Finn was doing during the film, but I can absolutely see how it could have- if followed by Duel of the Fates- been the second installment of a truly satisfying sequel trilogy. If only Abrams hadn't been tapped for TFA, we could have had something majestic. George Lucas is said to have liked TLJ best of all. When I left the theater after Rise of Skywalker, I genuinely believed it was one of the worst movies I had ever seen. I still think that.

While you hit on the major issues that the others did, I have to say that you pointed out several things that they did not. Really cool, and I appreciate how much work and effort you put into this. I especially enjoyed the overview of the original writer’s script for Episode IX, and you showed a lot of art that I hadn’t seen before. Thanks!

"I left the theater absolutely furious"
I'm a Star Wars book and comic fan first and foremost, but I can still relate to that reaction. It was me after I read "The Dark Nest" and "Legacy Of The Force". Stories that bordeline ignored and definitely mistreated their predecessors, had a braindead plot, and character assassinated some of my favorite SW heroes. They were so bad that I just decided to remove them from my headcanon.
I didn't have your reaction wih TROS or with the sequel trilogy in general because not only did I not watch them in cinemas, but I just didn't care about anyone that appeared or anything that happened in them. The OT heroes in the Star Wars universe I grew up with didn't turn into miserable failures, despite the many setbacks they faced. And compared to the next generation in the novels, the characters in the Sequels are just extremely weak in every aspect, with Finn being by far the most interesting.
So the difference in reaction to bad content came from how attached I was to the existing characters and universe. After it became clear to me that LFL-Disney was just out to remake the OT but worse, I was invested solely to watch how horrendously they would screw it up.. so when I watched TROS (legally ofc;) online, I could barely stop laughing as one hilariously bad moment stacked upon the other

Wow. Hearing that other script makes me even more aware of just how stupid JJ is. He really does think that props and actors are interchangeable, has no concept of narrative cohesion, and has no interest in continuity with any previous installments. And he isn't even aware of these weaknesses.

All 3 of these films were such garbage. Beautiful with the visuals, but it was like a home that's beautiful on the outside but gutted on the inside. They might as well have played into the Darth jar jar theory and revealed him as the big bad in 9 instead of Palpatine. That would've at least given this film a memorable plot twist like in ESB lol

A while ago i started to introduce my friend to Star Wars who had never seen any of the movies. Starting off from A New Hope to The Empire Strikes Back, we then moved to the prequels as i wanted her to first witness the Vader reveal before going to see Anakin's origin story and his eventual fall to the Dark Side, and lastly to Return of the Jedi as i wanted Anakin's redemption to be as emotional as possible for her, and later we're gonna watch The Clone Wars in chronological order and later Rebels and The Mandalorian, but i'm purposfully avoiding the sequels because of how much rules and established lore they broke and just how bad they are.

I was in a play once where the director specifically said we had to have really fast pacing throughout because the plot actually made no sense and he wanted the audience to fully enjoy themselves in the theater and it not be until the following day when they are at home that they suddenly think "What a minute...what the hell was that all about?!? None of that makes any sense!" I think that VERY much goes for the thoughts behind the pacing in this movie as well.

An hour of pristine critique of the sequel trilogy followed by a necessary point that none of your criticism had anything to do with "SJW" stuff. The sequels are bad because they are disjointed, poorly written, full of non-characters, and disrespectful to the franchise. Stop trying to transpose your weird obsessions where it doesn't fit.
The Force Awakening was entertaining enough, but derivative. And I assumed its characters would get fleshed out more. They don't. Finn literally loses his character lol.
The Last Jedi was a mess, but it had some gumption. I loved the emphasis on humble people being able to rise to greatness (which Rise of Skywalker jettisons out the airlock). I loved that opening scene with the bomber desperately trying to complete her duty. I loved that they killed Snoke and left us wondering what the hell was gonna happen next. But I felt they severely mis-used Luke. Poe is, as you say, just an asshole. It has poor pacing. The film is kind of a mess that has a few great moments.
I think I basically have nothing good to say about Rise of Skywalker? OK, I remembered one thing I thought was good. The busted-looking droid that acts terrified because of how his previous master abused him? We're used to droids being treated like family in this series. It's good to see the contrast.

36:15 Was really enjoying this until you made the same basic mistake that nearly every retrospective I've watched makes. The now infamous line of "Cloning ... secrets only the Sith knew" is a terrible line used as a non-explanation for how Palpy returned but it isn't as bad as you make out. Cloning and secrets only the Sith knew are not the same thing! The line should probably be more like "Cloning *combined with* secrets only the Sith knew". That's why there is that weird pause in there. It's shit writing that obviously fails at everything it's trying to do but it isn't deliberately breaking canon. JJ lifted this idea straight out of the E.U further proving that the EU isn't half as great as many fans try to tell you it is.

This is the only Star Wars movie I've only watched once. It's still hard for me to believe that the company that owns Marvel, and has had a consistent plan for 14 years, decided that they were going to do a sequel trilogy and didn't have a plan. I can understand not wanting to use Lucas's ideas, but there was a great book series that they could have used that had a strong female character like they wanted. It's just mind blowing that this was allowed to happen.

But this is still a great video essay, fun and almost all of the arguments you brought up are great and on-point. The top notch, concise summary of Anakin's motivation was a highlight, and you even included a Stover quote. If you haven't read NJO yet, do it, thematically it's a brilliant comclusion of the OT. No doubt the banter was a take away but he lacked to really understand why it worked so well. That would explain a lot. He tried to emulate it but failed horribly.

6:15 I’m glad someone finally pointed this out. I’ve heard so many people talk about what’s wrong with this film & no one has brought this up. There’s literally only 5 characters that actually underwent the training necessary to become a force ghost & 1 of them only managed to learn how to be a voice. It’s fascinating how much this movie gets wrong, but this one seems to go under the radar almost every time.

Its kind of weird how they talk about the darkness in Rey. But apparently this is due to her genetics rather than her genuinely being a complicated person. Luke started off as a hyper optimistic good boy type it would have been interesting to watch her become like a grey jedi ora anything interesting other than, the best good girl that ever did live

You got many things right but faulted at the end and then it all kind of felt appart. When you started to mix things up and rubbished the loyal Star Wars fans it really lowered my respect for your movie critique. What most fans were upset about was NEVER Finn being an actor of African descend (quiet the opposite, most Star Wars fans were actually exited to have Boyega cast in the movie). The hate of the prequals came mostly from those that never liked Star Wars and not from the fans! I was there in 1977 when there were no fandom, I loved the Star Wars movie long before it was named A New Hope. I have never found in all my years of following the fandom, the type of critism you claim to have come from the fans... So no, in that respect you got it wrong... But you also forgot to put the blame where the blame for the failiet of the Sequals originated from... Kathelene Kennedy... You also did not crtic Chris Terrio who's movie scripts JJ followed. And finally you totally did not mention Rian "your-theories-suck" Johnson... Why did you specially leave him unnamed? (Johnson did more damage to the trilogy than JJ, Karsdan and Terrio combined did). So yes, the sequals were a mess but they were so by design!

It's like you weren't even really listening and just clapping along whenever the video said something bad against the movies. factor5fanatic clearly stated a number of times that TLJ actually did things right and made sense. He openly stated that he likes the TLJ. Why would he shit on Johnson if he made his movie in the language of Star Wars while JJ broke all the rules, even ones he made himself? It should be obvious why he didn't mention him to explain why Rise sucked so bad.
Rian "your-theories-suck" Johnson was right, most of the TFA theories did suck in terms of story telling. What theme would be explored by making Snoke turn out to be Darth Plagius? No idea as fans were more interested in seeing Plagius on screen rather than being worried if having him there would give a message that was against everything George was saying in the saga: You can't cheat death. Within the context movies it doesn't even matter if Plagius was even a real person, Palpaptine could be making the entire thing up on the spot because the details don't matter. It's that he's telling Anakin exactly what he wants to hear and making himself unkillable by him when he reveals that he is the Sith master all along. We love that scene because we see the subtle manipulation going on, not because we get to learn the name of Siddious' former master.

@@dansharp2860 ok, yes I see your point and it has been explained to me before by others in the same matter but it does not add up. Rian was meant to continued the narrative set by TFA (since it was a trilogy) but chose to disregard them all and toss them over his shoulder like "his version" of Luke did to Anikin's lighsaber. Rian intended to subvert all expectations and story lines from TFA so that by the end of the trashed Jedi there was no room for the third and final movie... Yes, JJ initially had the opportunity to create an amazing Star Wars film, he had the money, total access to Lucas' treasure trove of films, licensed books and novels, the support of the loyal fan base, the technology, the most talented craft and film people in the industry and even the main original cast members plus anyone else he could have wanted or imagened but chose to totally ignore it all (even George Lucas treatment for the Sequals) and created a lesser carbon copy of a New Hope. Why, it no longer matters but Rian went about purposely creating his own selfcontain story that was really disconnected from most of the other previous movies... "Forget about the Jedi and the Sith!" He told us, "kill them all if you have to!" he cried out... Rian was just the wrong person in charge of the second chapter in a 9 parts saga! Even Mark Hamill totally disagreed with what Rian created... Yet you think you know better?
      Impressive, most impressive!

And at the end of the movie he said that the Jedi would continue and that they would learn from their mistakes. You know, the theme of the entire movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hear to tell anyone that TLJ is some sort of masterpiece. It is a deeply flawed movie with tonnes of problems but it does mostly stay internally consistent with the 6 George movies. You can not like what they did with Luke but it is still internally consistent. JJ broke the universe with all the people who could see the New Republic
being destroyed from different planets long before Rian came up with a new way to end space battles.
It is also not actually Rian's job to make sure everything lines up from TFA. That's Kathleen Kennedy's job to oversee the entire trilogy since no director was originally staying for more than one movie. She needed to make sure the trilogy was internally consistent so if Rian had his own ideas about the movie they would be tempered by the needs of the series. One guess what happened. It was her job to hire a director who will ultimately make the movie that Lucasfilm want not their own. Rian really was just another piece in the shit pie that was the sequels, not the biggest problem.

the "criticism" of war profiteering in TLJ was terrible, especially from a communist perspective. Do you wanna fight Nazis with forks? It also, more importantly, can easily be turned into the reactionary narrative of "bankers" being behind every war. The disdain that Nazis and many self-described anticapitalists have for capitalism is also reactionary in nature. For a communist, every alarm bell should start ringing once you hear someone make a distinction into "good, productive" (national) capitalism (referring to "honest, hard-working, patriotic" job creators) and "evil, parasitic" (international) capitalism (referring to banks, stock markets, speculation).
And as a final point, it doesn't even work in the Star Wars universe, because military hardware is produced by some of the largest corporations in the galaxy, and these corporations have been traditionally government- or at least faction-aligned, if not directly controlled. Raith Sienar made TIEs for the Empire because they contracted SFS, but didn't he didn't sell X-Wings to the Alliance because those were produced by Incom (yes, I know they were inititally planned for the Empire). Mon Calamari didn't build ships for the Empire once they had a choice. Even in the new canon, Incom still makes the X-Wing, while Sienar/Jaemus and Kuat/Entralla support the First Oder exclusively.

IT'S A SEQUEL!! It SHOULD be a PIECE of the story, not necessarily a story unto itself.
