    @Tyler Ley I ❤️ this!!! 1) How to build proper deck footings. Calculating the size of the footing. What kind of concrete to use. Common mistakes. Rebar placement and design. Our city inspector is incompetent and footings are vastly undersized on my neighbor’s homes. 2) Not DIY but I’m on the board for our neighborhood and the concrete streets are failing after 10-15 years due to large cracks. We have a high water table and no drain tile was installed. How can we reinforce the concrete to make it last longer. Current design is 8” of concrete with rebar drilled into adjacent slabs but no rebar elsewhere. 3) What to request from professionals when replacing a driveway or patio for a 100 year life. Advice for cold and warm areas would be nice for people who live in different parts of the country. Warning signs of improper concrete installation.

    Awesome, rebar patterns - optimal design, fiber content ratios, benches, panels, chicken coops, thermal insulation, robust recipes, checklists downloadable, excel macros for project type - strength (or %w/c) - man loading for different size projects , keeping concrete wet ..... and aircrete ( awhole bag of worms in itself;) a whole list of very small projects that will provide breadcrumbs back to your great channel.

    I'm pouring a pervious concrete patio for my grill this weekend. 4 bags of heavy Portland Cement, a pea gravel pile, a DIY trommel, bags for washing, buckets for filling, another worn out shovel, a new motor in the Harbour Freight 3.2 cf mixer, and a recipe off the internet. Do you want pictures?

    As someone who's been looking into this (for small things, like a fence) I would say the following topics are nice to cover:
    - aggregate purity (vegetable debris, clay, etc)
    - aggregate size ratio for a few grades (i.e. for EU C20/25 - X% - 0-4mm, Y% - 4-8mm, Z% 8-16mm, etc. )
    - water / cement ratio
    - additive types and effects
    I know all these vary depending on the aggregate type (round, crushed) or max allowed size (due to formwork/rebar) but touching on all these basic aspects would be useful

    Plasticizer's DIY can use at home to improve mixes. Also, mix design for home, instead of the old 3 Stone, 2 sand 1 cement ratio, ie: are we using granite stone, size of stone, differences between sands, difference between GP cement and GB cement.. especially for concrete bench tops which are trending.. like super plasticizer's..

    Using Concrete for the Disabled ! Dry pour and small batch pours. How to reduce the labor intensity so those of us with physical limitations on working times can tackle small and medium projects ourselves.

      I'm disabled also but in a way that allows me to pour concrete.
      1. Get a friend to help. If it's a wheelchair ramp or something.
      2. Find out how large of a batch you can make. Then use set retarders so you have all the time you need to mix a large amount. You could mix a yard a gallon at a time if you have to.

    I haven’t watched all of your videos so I’m sorry if you’ve already covered some of these.
    1. I found your discussion of alternatives to steel rebar to be very interesting. But I was left wondering how the specs you gave translate into usability for certain projects. Maybe fiberglass rebar wouldn’t work for skyscrapers, but what about a pool, garage, or even house foundation?
    2. What about concrete’s curing process results in certain things being best practice, specifically as it relates to footers and foundations. Why it’s not best practice to just have the sides of a trench serve as the “form” of the concrete (despite it being a common practice…), why certain base materials are better than others, etc.
    3. Weather. Humidity, heat, cold, etc. How it effects curing and how it might effect what mix ratios/ additives would be ideal.
    Also just in general, more about how to make concrete last. I know you have spoken about the topic before, but it just blows my mind every time I think about how short the longevity of our structures is and how we’re all just okay with it. I know it has to do with plenty of other things besides concrete, but it doesn’t exclude it either. And if the foundation isn’t going to last, what the hell is the point of caring about how long anything else lasts.

    I am a building inspector. I see so much concrete going in improperly, too wet, adding water after the lab takes samples, no chairs on reinforcement, workers breaking the chairs so they don’t trip on the rebar, no curing at all, lab techs that improperly prepare samples, etc. I wish you would show how concrete placement contractors cut corners to save labor dollars and deliver an inferior product to the customer.

      Tell anyone doing concrete work for you that you will be at the pour and no water is to be added to the truck or after thw pour. Meet the truck driver and tell him you ordered and paid for the concrete and to not put water in under any circumstance.
      Obviously tell contractors you'll be ordering the concrete.

    The biggest mistake I see home gamers make in regards to concrete is dealing with fasteners. I think I video covering the different types of fasteners and anchors, strengths and weaknesses, and proper installation would be very helpful to people.

    Hey Mate
    I’d love to see a video on mix design for concrete moulds. I’ve experimented with super plasticisers with success but they are quite expensive per unit
    I’m concerned about using too much vibration and causing segregation but still want to achieve smooth and relatively bubble free surface finish
    Trying to achieve strength without the use of complex reinforcement bars so considering GFRC but concerned about fibres on the surface
    Would love to hear your input

    what about starting with a video on differences between common big box store concrete mixes? not just specs but how they actually work.
    high early strength, fast setting, fiber reinforced, etc.
    so what do they actually do to make it "high early strength" and is it worth it? is the fiber reinforced stuff actually significantly different and worth it, or are the added fibers mostly useless? etc
    breakdowns like that would be interesting! thanks professor!

    I want to know the Mix that the USA government used to make the Bomb shelters in the basements of Hospitals & Government buildings. That stuff is still standing after 80 years with no sign of wear , or degradation . Drilling into it eats up scores of Diamond tipped masonry bits . As a side note I would like to know why we don't build with that stuff now .

    I would like to know more about carbonation and chlorination of concrete, and any other factor that can affect concrete durability, strength, integrity. How to estimate with calculations or what tests and standards exist? And what levels of carbonation or chlorination are considered acceptable that would not effect the durability or lifespan of concrete? And how we could extend the lifespan or stop these processes in the concrete, especially for precast concrete?

    Out of the box idea.
    Concrete bird bath or a fountain? What concrete to use for different finishes? I had a neighbor growing up who had a super smooth driveway, how can I get that?
    I am about to build a concrete paver patio, with large 4'x8' cast in place pavers. What should I think about when building that?

      Those are papers they're slabs. Go thick and use a lot of rebar. Rebar is cheap when considering the work put in on a job. Wire mesh is great so you know it's everywhere, then double up on the corners

    In my years in the trades, why is it the least informed about where rebar should be placed in a concrete poor are the folks IN your industry? Show them for starters: concrete in compression= great. Concrete in tension= failure. Reinforced 'properly' concrete= tension ready, or prestressed, or something a PRO like yourself could teach me. ALMOST NEVER IN THE CENTER. We are your grasshoppers & students. I learn something from you every offering, & thanks for caring.

      Should rebar be used rusted? And does clean rebar rust after being placed in the concrete? I’m asking because I’ve always heard that the rust is what causes the breakdown of concrete?

      Yes, you put crebar in the center all the time, and you need to learn to keep your mouth shut before spouting off in a forum with a lot of pros. Sounds like you're the typical "trade guy know it all", what is your trade? Wallpaper?

      ​@Slaphappy-_- you can us rusted bar. The question is how bad is it rusted6 months outside or 10 years? What is it for? Driveway use it, foundations don't. Strip the rust if you use it.

    This is an amazing video and I am glad that you are asking because I am in need of help. I would like to know about parging,. My mother has an old rowhome in Philadelphia and the basement is crumbling away!! There is dust everywhere and you can even begin to see the river rocks that are the foundation of these homes that were built in 1925. I don't have much money and my mother is on a strict budget since she is retired. I had a friend who was a GC that was going to help me do this project but had a family emergency and I haven't heard back from him since. If there is any guidance that you can provide me that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

    I own a residential concrete company and have two things for your list:
    1- Small retaining walls on property lines- I get a lot of requests for these (1'-3' in height) and if the retaining wall only has a load on one side, should the wall be placed on the footing closer to the loaded side or empty side?
    2- WINTER IS HARD FOR US! Do you know of any sealers that can be applied below 40-50 degree weather? And what is the sweet spot for saw cutting control joints if night temps get below freezing?

    I work in waste-water. We regularly do rehab due to corrosion. I want to learn what is on the cutting edge of concrete corrosion resistance.

      Sounds like you need basalt or fiberglass rebar. About the same price for fiberglass, I don't know for basalt

    I'd like to have more information on shotcrete. i like the idea of dome construction but not necessarily the design of it.... My idea is to create the thermos bottle effect... inside concrete for thermal mass (of whatever thickness) seperated by mineral wool 6" thick and the outside concrete for structural stability, water shedding and also fire and storm resistance.... So I'm looking into the feasibility of what it would take to create a space about 24' wide by however long with an arched ceiling with a 16' radius.... i believe i can do this either slab floor, basement or crawlspace and still install a concrete floor after i erect the sides of the spaces... i intend to use foamcrete for insulation for the slab floor or for the floor in the crawlspace/basement, shoot a concrete floor on top of that with shotcrete and then add a concrete floor above that if i don't go slab... i like the idea of a crawlspace for electrical, plumbing and other runs such as radiant heating... i think i can thermally bridge the footing for the inside walls with thermal break directly on top of the footing. My idea is to completely level the ground footprint and set crushed stone on top of that which the footings will be poured.... what i want to know is how thick these shotcrete walls will have to be and if this idea is out of the realm of financial reasonability?....

      Wow I'm a contractor that has poured a concrete house for myself. You got a lot going on there and it's to much.
      Look up thermomass for wythe connectors on the insulation wall.
      A flat concrete roof will cost less.
      Look into tire shred if you don't want to use insulation board for some reason.
      Crawlspace is the way to go pn this.
      Respond to this and I'll give you 30 min on a phone call and help clean up your plans.

    I would like to learn a concrete mix that is simple and as water resistant as possible for building a house in the tropics that is earthquake and typhoon proof. I want to build all exterior walls with galvy rebar reinforced concrete so that it's design and concrete resilience will make for a storm shelter in the shape of a big rectangular house with a shed roof. I plan to use SRC for added interior structural things like columns, beams, and shear walls if necessary. The roof will likely be standing seam insulated metal panels with 6" pur foam between the steel membranes. Any ideas would be much appreciated if you're feeling generous.. Thanks for the great concrete wisdom! Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

    Great channel!
    1) It seems that hydrated lime increases durability at a heavy cost to strength. Can it be added to concrete in small amounts, or is it only suitable for use in mortar? What makes it unsuitable for use in below-ground mortar? Does water cause it to dissolve away?
    2) CSA-Belite concrete and mortar mixes boast impressive strength numbers. Are there other disadvantages besides price, work-life, and permeability? Despite their moisture permeability, are they somewhat compatible with steel rebar? How much faster would steel rebar corrode?

    Can you shed some light on concrete resurfacing? I have a 30x40 square section of driveway with expansion joints separating it into 10 x 12 squares. The slabs are in pretty good shape, poured about 30 years ago, but some have discoloration, cracks, and some have a worn surface, in one, after pressure washing, the color looks a bit like sand, making me guess that someone finished the rising bleed water into when they finished it, or even sloughed away some of the surface cement, or added water. Fortunately, that's just one small area
    Oddly, a long gravel driveway leads up to it, and we're about to cover that well compacted gravel with concrete. But that new concrete is going to look a lot better than the old concrete.
    I'd like the entire project to look new or at least consistent
    I'm thinking either to topcoat the existing concrete with top coating designed for that, but I'm not sure which product to use.
    Or we could even do decorative stamping on the older section, which could be really striking, and wouldn't have to color-match the new concrete.
    But if I go through all this expense, I'd like the solution to last at least 10 years.
    That's a LOT of questions. But you are a true expert. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Dr. Ley- Several thoughts on this proposed project; 1st- Contractor goals are entirely different from DIYers, contractors want to work quickly and efficiently with specialized equipment and skilled labor to maximize profits; DIYers usually have unskilled labor (themselves) and minimal specialized equipment, and seek to minimize $$ expended to achieve an "acceptable" outcome, and 2nd- If you were to review most recent videos on this platform, you would find a preponderance of "dry pour" concrete projects. Thus; the information this series provides to followers like the fellow who runs 2 crews and wet pours and finishes 60 cy of concrete daily, will most likely, not be helpful to most DIYers. With that in mind, this DIYer would like you and your minions (students, undergrad and grad) to "start at the bottom" and address substrate preparation. Comparing manual tamping, plate compaction, jumping jacks, or other means of substrate stabilization such as watering or tilling in amendments such as cement, lime, or aggregate prior to compaction would be helpful. Next; a few comments regarding base materials contrasting suggested depth and degree of compaction of rock, sand, or soil. Then please address sub-slab insulation, EPS or XPS or vapor barriers with pros and cons. Since most DIY cementitious projects are not expected to support the weight of heavy vehicles, the thickness of the slab/paver is an issue. I raise this issue because at ConcreteNetwork.com the spec for pavers is 2-3/8" for foot, driveways, and light vehicular traffic, and 3-1/8" for streets and industrial applications, while continuous pours must be 4" per code. The caveat is that pavers are supposed to meet an 8000psi standard. This leads me to what I perceive to be the greatest informational deficit regarding the "dry pour" trend and how you might help. Most DIYers are using bagged concrete mix from the box store (4000 or 5000psi) and two problems arise most often, 1st- how to achieve a relatively smooth finish, and 2nd- what is the correct hydration procedure. With "wet pour" concrete, general info suggests 70% strength at 72hr, and full "cure" at 28 days, dry pour is a complete crap shoot with little formal information available. It would be most helpful, since you have the testing facilities, to compare cure times, air entrainment, and final strengths achieved with over/normal/under hydrated wet pour samples (as you might get in the DIY environment) and also dry pour samples cured using your best ideas. The current practice with dry pour is to apply two light mistings 1hr apart (which sets a "crust" on the surface, then soaking the slab every subsequent hour for each 1/2" of slab thickness), but I believe this is an empiric approach without basis in comparative testing. Regarding the surface finish problem, the current practice (in most videos) is to screed the forms, pushing down larger aggregate as you go, then edging, and finally smoothing the screed with a long handled paint roller (3/8 to 1/2" nap). Unfortunately, the 1st misting often exposes some of the less desirable aggregate. I think the solution is to use a colander or sifter to apply a fine layer of mortar mix or repair mix prior to the next misting, I defer to your knowledge and expertise in these regards. Additional projects might include the "best" method of setting a wooden post in concrete; wet pour, hydrate as you fill from the bag, hydrate after filling the hole, or let nature hydrate the "dry set" concrete around the post. In a related vein; will a dry pour slab eventually cure if inadequately hydrated at the beginning, this is a variation on the fence post question. It might also be helpful to address most common small project failures, like lack of edge retention (curbing), or drainage considerations. When all is done, I hope you might compile a reference book for the concrete DIYer. Sorry for the length of this comment, but you asked for it! LOL

    🤙What are thoughts on Dry pour concrete? can it reach a high strength same as wet pour with proper methods of hydration, optimal curing time, compacting, reducing air pockets , adding fibers/ rebar? what makes concrete strong? the act of mixing the concrete with water in a mixer and letting the chemical reaction takes place or simply the act of hydration combined with the dry concrete and the chemical reaction combines the sand , cement and aggregate thanks in advance for your knowledge 🤙to clarify

      No it doesn't get near the quality of a standard pour. The fact that you can't tell what part gets hydration and what doesn't mean there is no way to tell the quality of a piece. How much gets to much water?
      This is something used for a hundred years, but usually for shed floors, parking around shops and thing like that. It was used more when energy was cheap. Since energy hasn't been cheap for 30 years everyone is acting like it's new.

    Hi Tyler,
    I’m an owner/builder in the PNW (climate zone marine 4c) and I’m planning to build a house for my family next year. The foundation will be a perimeter footing (8”x12), and stem wall (20” high), which I plan to pour monolithically. I’d love to hear any tips about how to do this successfully;
    1. how to build forms so that the weight of the concrete does not lift the forms off the ground?
    2. What kind of workability/slump do I want so that the concrete does not overflow out of the footing forms as I pour the wall?
    Some other details: I’ll be handling the concrete boom, but will have someone on a vibrator. The foundation will be 28’x44’, no slab (I’ll be pouring an earthen clay floor on top of expanded foam-glass aggregate infill). I’m on Bainbridge Island, but not exposed to salt water.     DIY Concrete Freak Home Design?
    There are endless apps and websites that enable a user to design a wood home. What apps or websites enable concrete lovers to design a concrete home?
    - ability to specify dimensions, wall thickness, FRP, concrete mix, use of precast concrete walls, etc...
    * I want to learn how I can design something, that I can build by myself, that will last for hundreds of years!
    ** There is much more satisfaction in doing than there is in learning. Maybe there could be a network of universities and contractors that people could volunteer to work for a few days in order to gain experience with concrete.
    *** Like this video, there needs to be a call to action that propells the watcher to take steps toward building something of beauty and wonder that will benefit society for centuries!

    Who I am: A DIYer who cares about doing things smart/right/best, and why.
    What I want: Example concrete formulations! I want you to give me a concrete formula for a specific (or range) of intended use(s), and why. Tell me what my ratio ranges are, and why. For example, if I wanted to over-engineer (which I do) a concrete footing or pier or column with slag, silica fume, FRB, microfibers, macrofibers, air entrainment admix, and a water reducer/superplasticizer, what would you recommend? You've covered each of these items individually, but I want the whole recipe.
    Or even better, give us a tool/ruleset/formula for making our own concrete formulas.
    Going along the lines that another commenter suggested, you could compare answers to the above with readily available bagged mixes. Maybe the bagged stuff is good enough already and I don't have to worry about any of the details. And even compare bagged to ready-mix. If there's a real difference, what is it, and why?

    Low carbon concrete at home for the back yard projects. Geopolymer and Alkline Activated concrte for DIY projects.
    In Australia, when I go to the hardware store, why are the bagged concrete and cement products all made with OPC, many say made in Vietnam and non list their ingredients? When will there be a carbon rating on cement products to inform buyers? Love your work!!

      There won't be because then no one would use it that's anti "carbon" and those of us that build high quality know the carbon load over the lifetime is lower. Buy cement make your mix and offset thw carbon somewhere else. And no we won't be using all the concrete replacements or whatever you saw on the news. We've been using the good products for a decade, and the others don't work.

    Im a contractor in the Seattle area.
    I have a structural concrete crew and a flatwork/curb and gutter crew.
    Between the 2 crews we probably pour an average of 60cy a day.
    That being said, i have 2 ideas/questions.
    1: i know that the ready mix companies use recycled water in their mix, and sometimes even have some concrete from their last pours. I know how it effects us in the field, but how do you mitigate that from happening?
    2: my structural crews deal in highly corrosive environments, mainly h2s or extreme heat from steam. What admixtures, procedures, reinforcing etc... would you you recommend for mitigating these issues?
    Btw, big fan of your content. Id love to hear you at w.o.c. next time.

    Mr. Ley,
    I'm still watching your videos--specifically ones on the calculations for concrete and reinforcement, but I think a good one would be a list of steps for structural concrete on your process flow--but realistically. Can random people go to concrete plants and ask for more fly ash? Can they ask the plant to put their sand through sieves to check for a proper distribution of sized sand particles? What about admixtures? Are those kept on site and easy to add into mixes? My project may be a bit larger than you're thinking, but I've got an area that needs a retaining wall--about 8 ft high. I'm learning how to calculate the reinforcement now (and am confident in my free body diagrams for that section :P) but I'm just not sure what the steps exact best steps are.
    i.e.
    Planning: Calculations, size etc
    Prep: Surface prep of ground under concrete. Is a couple inches of compacted gravel under concrete better than compacted dirt? How much better? Justify the cost?
    Rebar: Add your rebar stuff to the playlist--especially the epoxy coated. I was going to use epoxy coated for my retaining wall but you turned me away and now I'm just planning to use some coatings on the concrete. Calcs should be handled in the beginning, this is mainly just what types and maybe best practices on tying rebar, or special shapes of rebar for certain situations?
    Molds: Does surface prep of molds have a big influence on final strength? I assume it does have a big influence on look. How should molds be best created? Metal vs wood? etc.
    Concrete: What can we as hobbyists/homeowners etc actually specify in our concrete? I assume if I go to my local concrete factory, they'll not have fumed silica on hand, or if they do I doubt any of us will want to pay for it. What admixtures are readily available and the best bang for your buck? What about testing their particle distribution as mentioned? I'm reading schaums outlines on reinforced concrete design and it said one thing to do was test the water content of the sand and gravel--and reduce your water addition if you want a good W/C ratio. Is this standard?
    Curing: Can't think of any questions here. Just maybe your video (I think it was yours) on cure times and strength, keeping it moist but not pooled on the top etc.
    Maybe one on how to best install hardware in your concrete? Casting it in or anchors?

      Make sure there are counterforts on you wall. No most plants won't sieve sand for you. If you want something special from a plant you have to give them the mix. Aggregate and cement will be to an ASTM standard.
      Use a lot of steel and higher strength concrete, rent commercial concrete forms. You're done. 😊 good luck

    Pea gravel or recycled concrete to save money.
    What specific type of gravel makes the best result.

    Add lime. I understand that lime causes concrete to heal itself. How many shovels or half shovels of lime are added in Wheelbarrow concrete mix.
    Does the cement industry keep the lime ingredients secret based on its unique cement healing properties.
    How much water? Should it be wet or dry. What are the pros and cons?
    How much mixing. Can cement be mixed too much.
    I mix ingredients dry first in wheelbarrow with hoe and then mix water. Is this correct? Should I use a cement mixer for better results?
    I have used a concrete electric vibratory tool. Now I use my shovels in chopping downward motion. Which method is better and in which situations.
    Should 3/8 rebar and twist wire connections be used for strength. What are the pros and cons of rebar in dry and wet climates. How much weight can cement stand with or without rebar.
    Will you receive backlash from the cement industry for revealing secrets about how novice backyard cement workers can mix quality cement
    Please keep your answers easy to understand in that I am just around the house cement person.

    A really useful topic would be pouring concrete foundations for a house or outbuilding.
    The process of making them, soil considerations, how to guarantee stability and avoid nightmares like subsidence ect.
    I think that’s a big think that makes people hesitate because if you mess that up it’s a BIG problem.

    Air mixture: You have a lot of videos on it, but how about a beginner/kindergarden version just talking about when and when not to add air? When I order concrete, there is no requesting the amount of air, just with or without.

    Hi Professor Tyler, i would like to see a video on which concrete mix would be best to use for bored piers in unstable ground using fly ash / glass additives and steel fibres like "Helix" instead of using rebar cages (if possible). Piers would be in Climate 6 on the side of a mountain with trees that need to be removed and lots of rock floaters. Would i also need to use those tube liners for hydration control or can the concrete be poured straight into the holes drilled?

Will it be better to leave a void in the middle of the walls to place the thermo materials there, or cover the inside of the walls with the thermo materials (it could be panels of fiber glass, mineral wool, or stereofoam materials) to protect from the outside weather.     Concrete Wrapping (how much streangth/longevity could be added): carbon fiber is costly. Could fiberglass or something else be used? Are there concrete elements that should not be wrapped due to compression/tensile strengths of the wrapping material?

    Hello Tyler, I have questions about sealing my new concrete slab and the seam between the footer and slab. My footer is about 18” wide and 2ft deep. The contractor cleaned the footer well before pouring the post tension slab. Is it necessary to fill this very tight seem between the two pours? If so what would I use? Some have advised leaving it open in the event I ever had a water line in the slab break that it would allow water out. My house will have a 2ft overhang as well as gutters. I plan to slope the dirt away from the home so I should never have water around the foundation. Also, we plan to have our concrete as finished floor, thoughts on finishes? Wax, sealer etc. We are keep the color no stain. Thanks so much

    What your opinion on mobile mixer concrete trucks. Do they make just as good of concrete as a batch plant?

      Lower mixing standard because they just have a screw to mix things for a feet. Batch plant materials are mixed thw entire drive to site and longer if needed. If you're doing a few yard custom mix it's those trucks or finding someone that rents small 1-2cy mixers.

    Hey im working on a huge warehouse. The automation requires no movement joint and very flat. The builder wants to provide combi slab solution i want PT. Combi has top bottom redo with bosfa fibre in the mix. Will this crack. 1000m2 pours with tied joints. ? Will PT deform the surface when tensioned. ?

      He'll if it's threaded you can tension it and do 1 inch. Look at Trinic's videos. They have what you need for panels. If you're using standard concrete, you're going to need tension before or after.
