The furls metal streamline are nice. Different from the odyssey- but I like them better actually - for me. Like you said earlier in the video - not every hook is for everybody.
But I like it because it has a perfect amount of point - not too sharp that it’ll snag but nice enough to fly through your stitches. The weight is nice seems to help crochet faster….
    I love them ❤
    Definitely worth trying

Hi there, I WAS a Furls Odyssey girl too! I was frustrated with the quality also, but loved the shape and the smooth glide of the Odyssey so …torn. After a while (and hundreds of dollars spent buying Odysseys on eBay), I decided to form my own company called FeareSilk Crochet LLC. We are currently working on an entirely new concept for a stainless steel hook!

I got the streamline metal hooks recently and they are super sturdy. The weight is different and they're more of an inline style. But their smallest size is 3.5mm.

I got four wooden furls hooks on sale and clearance and was so excited. Three different woods and 4 different sizes from 3.5 to 9 mm. None of them are able to be used because of dull hook heads and/or splinters from under the hook neck. I couldn’t even complete one small project with any of the hooks.
Even my cheap set of bamboo hooks are much more functional and reliable-especially comparing the 3.5 mm.

I am a total Clover Amour girl they are honestly my go to hooks and the only hooks that I have almost a whole collection of from 2mm up to 12mm, they are the only hooks that never hurt my wrist even if I work hours with them, however I wouldn't mind either if they make a bit thicker handles and I do have tiny hands too haha
I also have a few of Furls wooden ebony hooks and a few of their Andromeda galaxy hooks but I admit I only got them out of curiosity and because the colours spoke to me 😄

Happened to me with my very first Furl Zodiac hook! I had the bad habit of putting my crochet hook on my lap after a round to inspect for any mistakes as I'd do with my knitting needles, and when I got up my 4mm hook fell down and the tip just snapped off 💀💀 Thankfully, even though they don't replace breaks from drops, they did since it was my first purchase but that trauma stuck with me to this day and I keep to metal hooks 🙃

  • @Begonia8of9

Sorry to hear that your favorite needles are failing you. It is refreshing to hear that someone switches needles when they are not working with their choice of fiber. Too many creators are wed to one kind of hook no matter what with no change for their arthritis, or other factors--they will just say that they can't work with finer yarns anymore. I can only work with thread and 0-2 size yarn with the softer handled hooks. I also changed my grip with age and how I manipulate the work and hook as I crochet. Have you checked out the Laurel Hill palmwood needles? They are really strong. I routinely use mine for working with two strands--one strand Scrubby and one strand stitch, soak, scrub. That's really heavy-duty pulling, and the needles hold up without bending or breaking. They have a super smooth finish as well. (If you drop one of these needles, they do bounce though. I've had to crawl under furniture searching for one after I dropped it. LOL) I hope you find another hook that meets your needs.

You're brave! It's no fun to take a stand against something popular, even to help others with facts. There's such a fine line to walk between radical honesty and dragging for the satisfaction of it. You did great.
That said, my very first Odyssey many years ago should've been caught by QC, as it had a weird sloping flaw in the throat and the whole hook was wonky, lopsided. They sent me a new hook without hassle, but I've always been wary because of that experience. I won an acrylic I/5.5 (first time Aries was released i think it was) in their chat and it's okay, but tbh i dislike the sharp edges of the hook. Ditto the G+ and N i bought in wood. I expected better finishing on the edges. Leading to me hesitating even more. I've been in some of the lives where they discussed QC issues, and my Spidey senses tingled so bad i did not buy more.
My favorite hooks are Amours closely followed by the Bates ergonomic hooks. I have slightly longer hand bones and i played piano, so i totally get your flute mention! I'd encourage anyone to seek out the Bates ergonomic longer hooks, but watch out for price gouging. Shop around and when possible buy in the trio sets at a good price if you can't afford a full set. The edges are crisp too but somehow not as liable to catch as acrylic and wood Streamlines.
First time watcher, subscribed. Gotta watch for little sloth's naming 😊

Using my current set for 2 years now after I had an Odyssey break on me, and the Tulips are still going strong. I bought 6 Furls Odyssey hooks several years ago because I thought they would be "the" hook. Unfortunately, I don't like them. 5 of them I never used, but the one I did use a couple of times, I just couldn't get used to. I had no idea they can break. I do like Clovers, but I wish the handles were a bit longer as it pokes me in the hand. Is there a perfect hook I wonder???

Girl. I have been complaining about the quality of Furl's hooks FOREVER! Full disclosure, I have never been a fan of the Odyssey hooks (too heavy for me and one is too weak at the connection point for me to use it), but I did like the resin and wood hooks....until they broke. I switched to Addi Maxi Swings and Pryms. Addi's handles take some getting used to and are more of a Boye than Bates head but come in smaller, sizes. Pryms have the Bates head, but I think the smallest hook they make is a 3mm.

Girlll! Not the wooden hooks breaking too! I’m so sad to hear that. But I’m glad to know someone who shares my same sentiments about the quality of their hooks! Do you have a metal Prym or just the plastic?

I saw a furls hook on their site that cost $60 a few years back, though it was nice, there is no way that I would ever pay that amount for any crochet hook. I purchased two wooden hooks to try and my hand got more tired. Only used them twice, wasted my money. I’m satisfied with my Clover brand.

Does it matter which odyssey you get? There are two versions, the new one has the thinner throat and the older had a wider throat section.

Great video. I am not a fan of Furls, they are tough to use if you have a pencil grip. I have a few of them, and I just can't use them. There are a lot of Furls fans but I am not one of them. I have the Furls resin streamlines - nope!!

I love Furls Odyssey the best but only bought 2. I bought the glitter resin hook. It fell off the edge of my sewing cabinet and shattered. I drop my glasses 42 times a day and they dont even chip. I also bought the streamline metal but havent had it very long. I swear if they break, you will hear me scream wherever you are in the world. I like the Dots hooks from WeCrochet because they are long. Ophire hooks are too lightweight for me. No more resin hooks for me. Furls hooks are going to go down the tube if breakage keeps happening.

I want to try the streamline metal but I don’t think it’s necessary right now to buy another pricey hook. The glasses comment is funny because same! The amount of times I’ve expected my glasses to break and they didn’t is insane!

If a company´s crochet hooks keep breaking and so many people give their own experience, it´s obvious that it´s just bad quality and shouldn´t be supported, no matter how pretty the products are. These things are EXPENSIVE and them being so fragile makes it clear that you´re only paying for aesthetics, which should not be the deciding factor when you buy tools.

    • @DoesyourARTFIT

Furls are rip offs. Period. A hook that is in excess of $30-$50 is a pure exercise in status symbols of all stupid things. Have you tried Ommi or Ophire hooks that are furls without the insane prices. Me I am poor. I don’t buy any of them (furls) any more. I got one rain, it promptly broke and Furls can keep those cheaply made, very expensive hooks.

Love what you wrote about status symbols, because I think many Furis products fit that, especially the candy line. I do think there's a place for new handle designs for some people whose hands have pain or balancing issues with thin hooks, but there's always fimo clay or the tennis ball trick for mere pennies, not double digit dollars.
