  • It's time for my 100,000 mile update in my 2017 Chevy Bolt EV. Yes, I'm officially past my warranty, but the car is still going strong. This review is mostly about what it's been like to own and live with the Bolt EV for the last two and a half years and how well it has withstood the test of time. I provide a general overview, but I didn't do a deep dive into the exact cost of ownership and the specific tracking of battery degradation. Those I'll address those topics in detail in future videos.

      Can you expand on what trouble free means to you? Could you put a price to that, like total cost of maintenance in those 90k miles?

    9% range loss with the amount of DCFC that you do is quite acceptable.

      I also wanted to throw in, about not getting updates, well - I've had numerous updates on other devices, like laptops and cellphones, that have sometimes reduced functionality or outright broke something. The Bolt's interface is pretty solid and simple, and I'm good with no updates. It can be a good thing on something like a car.

    Washed my Bolt last night for upcoming NDEW events and noticed how clean the wheels stay due to lack of brake dust :) One more nail in the ICE coffin.

    • @thelondonbroiler
      @thelondonbroiler 4 года назад +7

      @Daver G "Nail in Coffin" was a poor choice of expression ( which doesn't accurately reflect the benefit stated). I should have rather stated that it is one more way in which EVs are superior to ICEVs. Brakes pads and the dust they produce, not only are no fun to clean off wheels, but I'm guessing it's no good to breath either (still contains asbestos?). Anyhow, hope your head doesn't fall off from shaking it :)

      @Daver G Aside from present initial higher cost of ownership and unreasonably slow recharge speeds (minus Tesla 3, Audi E-Tron, and Porsche Taycan), I fail to see glaring faults with EVs. Perhaps you can elaborate or direct me to a resource page. I'm not saying EVs are perfect, but they are indeed superior in many ways to their ICEV counterparts.

      Normal wear (charge/discharge cycles) is just one factor that contributes to capacity loss in a Lithium Ion battery. Heat is also a major factor that is completely independent of normal wear. Other factors include Depth of Discharge and being charged to or stored at higher states of charge as well as charge rate (which contributes to heat).
      If you are in a very hot climate or if you car spends most of it's life with the battery above 90% SoC your battery may not hold up as well.

    • @daviddrake7003

      Robert Aitchison I never let mine discharge lower than 20% unless the Charger infrastructure let me down. I still with 120 volt level one charging get 300 miles of range coming into Escondido off the last grade in from Valley Center CA.

    Excellent video! My wife and I knew we wanted to get the Bolt EV the moment it came out. It has exceeded our expectations. In the last 18 months we have put on 25K trouble free miles. The car has been flawless. Your video's have inspired us to push our Bolt EV harder than I would have normally pushed it and in March of this year we did a road trip from Ontario, Canada to Orlando Florida. 2500 miles round trip with no major issues. We also own a Volt which has become my daily commuter but look forward to upgrading it to a full BEV in the not to distant future. The Bolt EV will be part of our fleet for a long time to come.

      Thanks, Erik! I was able to watch your video back then (I should probably try to rewatch it if it's still up). So many of those long trips in Bolt EVs go ignored, but it really is telling that so many Bolt EV owners are able to make long road trips that (most importantly) meet their expectations for travel.

If I turn my temp control to 83 and turn of the air/heat button on the screen, at cooler temps when the windshield fogs, if I push the defrost button it defogs the windshield, but if I leave it going it starts to heat the cabin with little or no change on the Gom. (motorcyclists call it the Palomar run) 27 switchbacks in 8 miles it is fuuuuuun! Eric you should take a ride up here. You can charge at Murietta Hot Springs K Mart off I-215 or in Temecula at Old Town off I-15. Take off ramp for Rainbow and go historic old 395 to free DCFC at Pala Road Park and ride and up scenic 76 past Pala Casino and past Pauma Valley Casino and past Pauma Valley Country Club ( great place to live) go around new $17 million traffic circle up the grade and turn left past the sign for Lake Henshaw straight Palomar left, and enjoy the ride and the scenery and the Hale 200 inch electronically enhanced telescope as well as 4 others. Have vegetarian chili at Mother’s Kitchen or buy meat sandwiches at the general store. Then recoup your mileage loss in regen back down the grade or go down the East grade to Lake Henshaw and out to the Borrego Desert. A very fun time!

    Wow, what an amazing achievement! Congrats on the 100k mark and thanks for such informative content. It's pretty neat seeing the EV infrastructure grow and evolve around your car. You make a terrific point that it was mostly ahead of its time (by 18-24 months) upon release and it seems that every day there are new routes opening up. The only real bit of technology that has now advanced past its initial release is the 55kW charging speed.
    I'm curious as to how the used car market is going to come to value 2017-19 Bolt EVs. They clearly run forever with practically no upkeep costs.

      The range is what helps it’s value hang in there better than some EVs. The early, first gen Spark EV and Hyundai and Kia offerings have cratered in value, mostly attributed to their comparatively short range.

    I had a feeling you were around 100k miles. I hope it's okay, but at the Drive Electric event I was at this weekend folks were asking about the Bolt, how long it would last & etc. I ended up pointing to several (and showing a few) of your videos as good "we're not messing around here" examples; one guy was stunned by the idea you could go so far and it would last as long. Interesting comment about too soon & the points of charging & Android Auto/Carplay. Several people asked about OTA but seemed actually quite satisfied with how these separate (and cheaper/not applicable cost--wise) components were where the upgrades actually happened, even if indirectly.

    Excellent! Excellent!! As you know, you covered the overall cost of ownership (TCO) as well as pointing out the violent downside of being overly dependent on oil. The recent strikes on Saudi oil operations not only instantly raised the cost of gasoline here, but puts even more lives at risk due to the political disease that oil corruption causes. Lest we not forget that an AMERICAN resident, Jamal Khashoggi, was assassinated, and his body savagely dismembered by Saudi officials on the direct orders of the Saudi Crown Prince. With ZERO repercussions or criminal liability. Something our media desperately wants us to forget because acts like this defines who owns whom. I don't see oil as necessarily a bad thing...but if we can minimize (not eliminate) its usage by 60%, then we need not import another drop. Removing the profit incentive.
    The only thing I would like you to add, perhaps as an upcoming video, is a detail of your savings not only on maintenance, but on gasoline expense compared to a 40 MPG ICEv. And if you could, note that you are home-charging challenged, and for those non home-charging challenged consumers who drive in a typical fashion (15K miles per year), what the real savings would be over an 8 -10 year duty cycle.

    As for emergencies, people arguing that you're stuck in a power failure forget to think about gas pumps that are electrically powered.
    And if there is power, the charge point is not going to run out of electrons. As opposed to service stations: they tend to try up pretty fast in emergencies.

I can go fuel the car ahead of time AND have a few (3-4) five gallon has cans full ready to use, put them in the car and drive.. that would get me 1200 miles. Not really. Gasoline is far more stable than people think, it's not like movies.
      You can throw a lit match into a bucket of gasoline and nothing will happen.
      on the other hand when a lithium pack decides to go up... putting it out is no easy chore. all that's required is for you to puncture the lithium cells. Although the safety of lithium cells have improved dramatically also. generally speaking when they do go up all you can do is sit there and wait for it to finish.. since it's a chemical reaction that does not require oxygen.
      how many gas car fires happen out of the 300 million gas powered cars out there on the road just in the United States.
      Does it happen ..certainly.. does it happen statistically often enough to matter... No.
      And when it does happen it's easily handled by conventional fire equipment, even a portable fire extinguisher can usually put it out.
      Carbon monoxide I'm assuming that's what you meant by CO. Is Scrubed by the catalytic converter on any car built after 1975..
      The only other way for you to be poisoned would be if you had a leaking exhaust... and the week would have to be large enough for you to hear the leak when the engine is running. A small leak is not going to generate enough to poison you.

Up here in Oregon, we are starting to see a wave of early lease return bolts, mostly from California for obvious reasons. A well-known dealer in used electric vehicles in my area, Platt Auto, has experienced a c change in their inventory over the last month-and-a-half. For years their inventory was dominated by lease return Nissan Leafs, with a small compliment of Fiat 500 electric and more recently Volkswagen e-golf. Right now with the inventory is dominated by the 200 plus mile range Chevrolet Bolt EV and they can be had 4 around 20 grand, give or take a couple of grand depending on mileage and option packages. It was just a couple years ago when a person would have to spend north of 50 Grand for such a car. The times they are changing and in this regard, it's a very good thing. Keep on charging on! ⚡😎🖖

      In fact, for many of us, it's possible to completely cut ties from the public utilities. There are dozens of ways to generate electricity, and many of them can be done safely at home.
      With oil, on the other hand, we really only have one source of energy, and the United States as a nation doesn't even control as much of that resource as we consume.That's what I mean by dependency.

      @DangNguyen-my3wd 4 года назад

      @@newscoulomb3705 again, totally agree. A dependency on electricity, even if you're off grid, is now dependent on sourcing materials that can capture solar or wind energy and storage. Sooner or later, the oil industry will probably pivot and the electrical industry may be just as strong.

      @@DangNguyen-my3wd Perhaps, but right now, the relationship between oil and transportation is unhealthy (and leads to violence). That was my only point.

    Great job! Electric cars don’t have trouble driving through smoke that would kill a engine that needs fresh air. Lots of organizations are fighting the building of chargers. I love the BOLT, but I have back trouble and the seatbacks hit me in the wrong places. I love cloth seats!

    My 2017 Bolt has seen very little degradation in the 36k miles it has so far. Thanks to Eric and other RUclipsrs for starting us down the EV path. No regrets here - I love my Bolt! We’ll patiently wait for the infrastructure to fill in (Midwest), and intend to carry on with this car for years to come. Here’s to your 2nd 100k miles, Eric! We’ll be riding along with you as you blaze new trails and show off new charger setups. Here’s hoping your 2nd 100k has less “obstacles” - sheesh!

    Nice review Eric. I've been wondering ever since I moved further north here in Maine just how my 2017 will be holding up once I hit 100,000 miles. At 25,000 miles a year now I'm on track to hit that milestone by March of 2022. I'm really hoping to get 200,000 miles or more out of it as I'd like to be able to pay it off and go a year or two without a car payment. (And still have a reliable EV that can go the distance!) Thanks again for the review!

    I hope my 17 Bolt is doing as well as yours at 100k miles. I do intend to still have this car then. There is just no way I drive the miles you do. It will be 8 more years until i hit that level of miles. My first 2 years have been stellar. In Texas, the charging infrastructure is two years behind California, but is now complete enough the travel between cities. This is primarily because of Electrify America. I'm looking forward to two years from now when the charging network is even stronger. When my wife's car needs replacing I anticipate going electric with her car too.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  4 года назад +2

      Thanks! Yes, Electrify America really has opened the way for travelling in EVs outside of California. They only have a few major gaps, but after those are filled, most Americans with 200+ mile EVs will be able to travel almost anywhere relatively quick.

    Just turned 114,000 in Two and 3/4 years. I have the dings and dongs a cracked front piece from hitting a possum at 2:00 AM going up Palomar Mt. I have been all over as an Uber driver and as a private fare driver. You have the super sound system since you have the LT. Not the blows system in the Premier. Using the iPhone, I am listening to 1941-1943 broadcasts of Harry James and what a great voice Helen Forrest like she is in the car. And his trumpet!!! And saxes!!! Also with all this good stuff, I can watch video clips and movies ( Volcano, Earthquake, ( what bass!) Gettysburg, (love holographic cannons) Day After Tomorrow( great theme and sounds) and anything I can use Torch browser to download any video I can watch on my laptop and put on flash drive for the Bolt. Wish I could take off the control band for full 10.2 inch screen. I have not accepted the infotainment update that takes that away. You are right. What a vehicle this is!

    How has your efficiency in Wh/mile been impacted over 100,000 miles ? What has been the loss over time ? I used this metric to determine the variations in all electric drive for the Prius prime when I was part of a hybrid efficiency modeling team.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  4 года назад +1

      As far as I can see, my efficiency is unchanged. The degradation has gotten to the point that it is noticeable, but I'm still not convinced that all 9% is actual degradation (I think GM did lock away about 5% of the battery's capacity). I went from 58-59 kWh usable capacity to 55-56 kWh immediately following the BMS update.

    Thanks for this 100k review! In regards to your battery life, I’m curious as to how often you drive in “L” mode? Do you stay in L on long road trips as well even at higher speeds? Just wondering if you’ve seen this “high-regen” mode as a benefit in range even though you’re on the interstate mostly? Sorry if this has been covered in a previous video, just catching up.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  4 года назад

      Thanks! I drive in L almost exclusively, but that is simply because I prefer the feel.
      In real-world driving, I don't think you will actually notice the difference in efficiency between D and L, and it's even less noticeable when most of the driving is at freeway speeds.
      In theory, it is better to coast to a stop, but when you're driving and interacting with others on the road, that's almost never an option. The difference between coasting to a stop in D and L is negligible.
