North State California EV Charging Update, Aug 2024
I took a trip up to Northern California to get an update on the various charging stations that have gone in. Unfortunately, the EVgo Pilot location still hasn't opened, but the good news is, Electric Era is already making a big impact with their latest charging station in Weed.

Multiple Failures Across Northern California's EV Charging and Grid

The power went out, I wasn't able to charge my EV overnight, and my cat needed to go into the vet's office for an emergency surgery. This was the worst-case-scenario for an EV owner; however, it was also an opportunity for me to test out the current state of Northern California's public EV fast charging along the I-5 corridor. Let's just say that right now, things aren't great. Sites visited du...
2017 Chevy Bolt EV Replacement Battery Capacity Test
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.Месяц назад
It's time to finally test battery capacity of my new, replacement battery on my 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. For this test, I drove down to below 15%, and I compared the energy used versus the battery state of charge displayed on the charger screen. Based on this data point, it appears that my Bolt EV currently has about 63 kWh of usable battery capacity available.
ChargePoint Is Now Installing SAE J3400 Plugs!
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 месяца назад
It's happening, folks! ChargePoint is now deploying native SAE J3400 plugs at its charging sites, and so far, they've updated over a dozen of their sites in California. Because this standard uses the Tesla plug format but is based on CCS protocols, all that a CCS1 EV needs to use these plugs is a basic adapter. The big win for ChargePoint is that they'll be able increase site traffic by wooing ...

    I really liked using the pilot/GM energy chargers on my last road trip up I-77 and I-81 on the east coast. All three I used had good amenities and were easy to access. I noticed that they would not activate if my car was turned on using auto charge. I had to shut it off. It would say “payment authorized” and then go back to the Home Screen. Not a huge deal but was concerning when I was at 5% state of charge and didn’t realize. 😊 Thanks for the video! I live in Atlanta and do most of my driving on the east coast but it is cool to see the state of charging infrastructure out west. Maybe I’ll drive my EUV out there some day!

    I would really like to see some research on how big the grid connection is on that Electric Era site. The battery seems small if each of those chargers can really output 200kW. Just like a Freewire unit can be quickly crippled by back to back charging sessions, I would not be surprised if two E-GMP vehicles could max out that site and the third vehicle could get limited charging speeds.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 9 дней назад

      I couldn't find the transformer dedicated for the chargers, but I didn't get the impression that the site was power-limited in any way. My guess is, it's the standard 750 KVA. It's only ~800 kW of total site power, so the <200 kW that the battery would only be used for peak shaving.

    I wanted to add on regarding EA’s location choices outside of California and the general availability of charging infrastructure. I did a 6600 mile road trip in my Bolt this summer (I’ve done almost 13k since I bought it used in Jan) and part of my trip was to see a friend in Colorado so I drove a lot of the same roads OOS uses for their videos. When you get a chance, check out the Green River, UT and Grand Junction, CO EA stations on Google Maps. These are both locations along I-70 that, imo, are clearly meant to be travel stops but are placed so far from the freeway I would not consider them convenient. In regard to stations in general, personally I found myself partial to ChargePoint. The locations were usually more convenient, I never had to wait like I have had to at EA, and with 2 exceptions the hardware was always working. And since they max out the Bolt’s charging curve but not any other EV, most people avoid them so I feel less guilty about charging past 55% if I need/want to. I also got to stop at the sole Pilot/GM/EVgo station here in Arizona and I will say it was an excellent stop. I think Pilot is going to make a ton of money, especially at the Flying J locations, because that was the only stop where I charged more than I needed to. I really had no reason to leave since I grabbed a late lunch at the Denny’s and got almost enough charge to make it all the way back to Phoenix. The price was higher than anywhere else, but honestly I didn’t mind it for the convenience. I just hope in the future they operate the chargers more like the gas station where it’s more a “break even” thing and they rely more on the stores to generate profit.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 11 дней назад

      Thanks! Yes, Grand Junction is definitely farther off the freeway than it needs to be. Green River is a bit different, though, because all the businesses (including travel stops) are on that side route. A counterpoint would be Saint George, where the EA Walmart location is much closer to the freeway than the Superchargers. Hopefully, EA and Tesla both keep improving their site locations, but as you noted, Pilot Flying J is poised to take a lot of the market.

      @@newscoulomb3705 Funny enough St George was the one stop I didn’t have to make since I stayed overnight there and my hotel had free L2 charging. Overall though I love my Bolt. Thanks to the used credit I have now convinced two friends to buy Bolts. Insane value for the money. I took mine to get the tires rotated at the dealer and they have been such hot sellers they recently bought 44 more from GM’s buyback program and are prepping them for sale. I’m expecting a huge surge of Bolt in Phoenix in the coming months lol.

  • @daveedwards6727
    @daveedwards6727 11 дней назад

    Tesla recently upgraded/replaced a Supercharger here in Phoenix with v4 dispensers and v3 cabinets. All v4 dispensers have Magic Dock and are ready for card payments but for whatever reason it too is closed to non-Teslas/Fords/Rivians. Tried charging my Bolt both with my A2Z adapter and by trying to get the dispenser to release the CCS adapter (pro tip: you can press and hold the button on the NACS handle for 3-5 secs on public stalls, then push up and pull out to use the adapter) but neither worked. The Tesla app just said “unauthorized vehicle” and my Bolt was left to fend for itself lol. No idea what’s going on with Tesla right now but I’m sure it’s something to do with Elon’s antics.

    • @newscoulomb3705

      Yes, it's just really unclear why the access at locations with a Magic Dock adapters is so limited. Great video and glad to see you back out and posting. It's certainly been a while since I've commented on your videos. I have a 2LT Blazer EV now with the 10 module 85KWh pack and one piece of information I would find useful is the amperage output of the stations (especially considering the lower pack voltage of the 10 module GM packs). The power rating of the station often doesn't give a great indication of the amperage available. I've seen 350KW stations with a max 350A output (1000VDC at 350A). And I've seen 200KW stations that can do 500A output (400VDC at 500A). And I believe some of those Delta chargers can output 540A - and the GM Ultium cars (modules) can take it. Each Ultium module can take about 16KW (540A at 30VDC). Maybe even more. I like a good video every now and then but over a hour gets hard to squeeze in to the schedule and digest. Ideal video lengths would be 30 to 50 mins though I know some topics deserve a good in-depth analysis.

      Thanks, Erik, and congratulations on the new Blazer! I have mixed feelings about the higher current charging model, but it's been working for Tesla for over a decade now. Also, thanks for the feedback about the video length. I don't like making 1+ hour videos, but I, myself, will also consume them. I already edited this one down from nearly 2.5 hours, but I could have probably cut down a lot more.

      @@newscoulomb3705 Thanks!, I've had my Blazer EV for 5 months now and it's been working pretty good. Certainly a high voltage approach like Hyundai - Kia's eGMP has it's advantages. But I can also see why GM took the route they did. They can use the same module across a large number of vehicles bringing good economies of scale. Also 400V rated components are more plentiful on the market. It does allow for vehicles like the Silverado EV to charge a very high power rates. But that does compromise battery voltage on the smaller packs.

    We found the Willows EA station to be quite convenient as well. However the prices are now unreal. Last trip south it was 36c/kw with the subscription (Pass Plus) price.

    As far as I understand the Tesla cabinets output way more than their rated power. I have been at full V3 sites and got full 250 kW when I arrived. I have heard the cabinets are connected on the DC side.

      Yes, they definitely push more at a cable level. The placard states 631 A, but they push closer to 750 A for 5 to 10 minutes. I haven't heard about them pushing past the cabinet rating, but Supercharger sites do seem to vary based on their power drop/grid connection.

    Make a midwest trip. You will be trippin for sure. Tesla's is generally close to the interstate and major corridors, EA and others can be a mess. EA's are generally at Walmart or Sam's club. Usually not more convenient, but many times one or more chargers down, broken, and blocked by people charging to 100%. Tesla still gets the nod if you are on the beaten path. If you get off of the beaten path the choices get slim and it is generally the low power Chargepoint units if you can find chargers. Many times the hosts are not maintaining them. Ameren(the utility) here in the midwest has been derating the chargers due to summer grid load. We are on year 3 with them crippling these chargers during the summer. These chargers are CPE250's that are crippled by derating them. We seriously need infrastructure badly. If I am on the beaten path I would take the Tesla SC's any day over the alternative if I have a choice. Most of the time I am not on the beaten path so you take what you can get when on a road trip. Glad to see you are out and about!

      That is exageration. Steve and my friend just drove 8500 miles from Boston to Washington state and he said it went well. Jordon from out of spec is one of the biggest complainers on RUclips. Max patton was the worst and I am glad he went to law school. Jordan had a free lucid to only stop 2 times and he complained constantly thru the video . I love Eric. He is one of the 1st people I watched besides Tesla bjorn who Eric met and raced. I will take Eric and Steve over Kyle and Jorden I like Francie she appreciates what she has in a free vinfast. Lacey with the aria is great too. Some RUclipsrs are too spoiled with all the cars they drive.

      @@markfitzpatrick6692 I live here in the midwest. The midwest isn't CA. Unless you live in or near population centers or on the travel corridors charging can get very sparse here. You get off of the beaten path and you will find out how challenging it can get. Especially during the holiday travel times and people are backing up a the one to two chargers if they are working. Things are improving a great deal now in the last year if you are on a travel corridor and is getting much better for the "through" traveler and more work needs to be done. Now to your point Jordan was complaining and he wasn't even off of the main travel corridors. Those guys are road trippers over at Out of Spec and their complaining focuses on the main transportation corridors and the issues that really need to be hammered out. Frankly without the visibility and complaining a lot of things would not get done. But people need to keep their complaints in context. Pull up Plugshare, ABRP, and dig into the details. We still are not to the place you can just jump in an EV with no plan out here in the underdeveloped midwest and take off on a trip across the rural parts of these states. There is a charger density problem on the main corridors that is just now starting to fill in. That is why Walter's reporting is so valuable on the charging locations going in. Especially for CCS. There are main corridors that only recently had chargers installed where you would have to try and limp along some pretty serious stretches of highway between chargers. And those are on major transportation corridors, not some trip out into the hills and cornfields. Like I said, take a road trip and get off the beaten path. Your perspective will change. Do it during a heavy travel time. Make sure you have a good buffer and plan b, and c.

    Fantastic Grand Tour of NorCal I-5 stations! That ElectricEra station looks really cool and it's well needed along that corridor to add a good deal of redundancy. The big site of theirs is at Seven Feathers in southern Oregon with 12 dispensers. With EVgo soon to be in the mix at Weed, i think it'll be a major EV charging hub for North-South travelers.

      Yes, I was originally planning to head up to Seven Feathers for this trip, but with the Weed Electric Era site open, I figured I had enough to cover while staying in California. I'm curious what their Mt. Shasta site will look like, but I'm even more interested to see their Williams, CA site go in.

    Nice to see you out and about. I would like to see an accessibility stall with a button? to call for assistance. Usually I could handle it without issues, but I often use things to help me stand, walk with crutches or rarely wheelchair. Lifting up a heavy cable one handed while balancing can be difficult sometimes after a long drive.

      @@newscoulomb3705EVs are fantastic for me locally because I don’t have to go to a gas station to fuel up, every thing is set accessibility wise just plug in at home. When I got a EV ages ago the local gas station called me up asking why they have not seen me in a while and if I was ok, as the attendant usually helps me fill gas. But EV charger hopping is more of an issue for me on a long journey compared to gas as some do have buttons for assistance.

    Cool build for EE in Weed. Downtown looks like a thriving destination town which would be fun to visit sometime. Bummer hit a snag at PFJ canopy in Weed. I bet those are employees parking there. On the I-5 approach, getting to see the mountain in video form captured on PS photos was a treat. I agree that EVgo has been metro-centric and PFJ brings in that travel stop to their gig. Real cool vid. Enjoyed coming along for ride to all the stations. Much to explore. Taking a break to join a live stream. Will pick back up on the train ride into work tomorrow.
