Chevy Bolt EUV: Super Cruise vs An Atmospheric River

  • I recently picked up a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Redline for review, and I couldn't help myself. I hopped right onto the freeway in the middle of a heavy rainstorm to see how the system would fare. So far, I think Super Cruise is doing great, though I'm not sure that I would personally spend the extra money for it.
    Let me know what you think. Is Super Cruise or other driver assist functionality for you?

    I bought my EUV in October and super cruise is amazing for long trips. It relieves the weariness of the constant small adjustments that you don't realize until you finish driving. The major downside is you only get 3 years of it included, then you have to pay a monthly price to use it which is ridiculous for a $2000 add-on

    Its nice how SuperCruise re-engages after a lane change. I wish my Tesla's Autopilot did that! Manually re-engaging is annoying! Its nice you dont have to keep a hand on the wheel too.

    My experience with trying to buy a EUV, was not positive. The dealerships I met with placed such a high dealer markup, that I didn't make sense to choose the Euv over the Tesla. So I just bought the Tesla.

      I'm sorry to hear that. Chevrolet dealerships can be hit or miss. Even living in Northern California now, if I was to buy another Bolt EV/EUV, I'd drive down to specific Southern California dealerships to make the purchase. The price tag on this EUV is definitely on the steep side (about $37,000 MSRP), but I'm not sure there's a better value on the EV market right now outside of the base Bolt EV.

    Thanks Eric.
    Just picked up our 2023 EUV after six years of Bolt EV's.
    Some thoughts:
    I'm still getting used to adaptive cruse, not sure I like it more than the original system which worked very well. What GM did is limit the regen on adaptive cruse, after you're getting above 10 to 11 kW regen the car brakes cut in to regulate the speed. On our last two Bolt leases we did notice the rotors were starting to rust from not using the brakes during our Northeast winters so maybe this will turn out to be a good thing. I feel what seems to me the brakes coming on, still getting used to it though so will hold final opinions until I get more used to it.
    Got the sunroof option but not SC, we just don't do enough highway driving to justify it and I didn't like the idea of having to pay for it in three years.
    The EV does not have the HD review mirror, you can't get it on the EV at all, you can still, however, get the 360 view I believe. One thing they did that was excellent is move the HD rearview mirror sensor to just below the spoiler above the rear glass. After driving in snow, rain and slush it remains clear without using the washer, great thinking GM, the 2020 was always fogged up and I really like the HD mirror.
    GM did an excellent job on the interior, we're smaller so the seats are just about perfect for us.
    With only 350 miles on the car not sure about the ride yet, seems a little bouncy, I'll remedy that with Bilstein's in the rear. The car is definitely quieter, all the aluminum doors, hood and tailgate are gone, will have to see how much we like that. I was told repairs are cheaper on steel panels.
    We bought the 2023 and felt it is such a good car we wanted to own it outright.

      @mosfet500 I had Leased a 2017 and 2020 Bolt Premier and the low position of the rearview camera definitely meant it got dirty and also got a lot of glare from head lights so I could never use the HD Rearview Mirror in those two cars much. In my 2023 Bolt EUV Premier I love the new higher position of the camera!! I like it so much I've started using it all the time now and night time no longer suffers from the awful glare the old one had. I agree that was a great idea to move it up higher! I got both Sun & Sound and Super Cruise Packages and I bought it!
      As far as ride quality my 2020 was better than my 2017 and my 2023 is much better than my 2020 and definitely the seats are really nice compared to the 2017 & 2020.

I did the same thing as you, leased the 2017 LT, 2020 Premier and just bought the 2023 Premier EUV but no SC, just don't need it. We like the sunroof more than we thought but I wanted the nav which came with the package because Android Auto was hit and miss in the 2020 although it's working flawlessly in the new Bolt, hopefully they fixed it. Not sure if we have to pay for nav in three years?

    I own a Bolt EUV with Super Cruise, and I've twice driven a newer (2022 or 2023) Toyota Prius rental that had what they call "Lane Tracing Assist". I got in an argument over on a Bolt forum because I was claiming the Chevy Supercruise was more or less the same as the Prius LTA, with two significant exceptions: 1) the Toyota LTA works without needing specially mapped roads, and 2) (AFAIK) the Toyota version does not stop working after three years. Has anyone else done a comparison?

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  Год назад +1

      Plenty of people have compared the various driver assistance systems, yes, but in terms of actual functionality, Toyota's Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) falls well short of Super Cruise (SC). What's confusing about LTA is that it falls somewhere between GM's Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and SC in terms of functionality, so LTA feels like the car is steering for you. However, LTA is not a hands-free system, and it does require frequent driver intervention. With SC, all that's required of the driver is that the be awake and aware, though it does require mapped roads.
      The other issue that might be confusing is that the Bolt EUV has the first version of SC, which is much less capable than the newer version of SC being used in Ultium EVs. That newer version of SC is more comparable with Ford's Blue Cruise 1.2 and Mercedes's Drive Pilot, both of which are in a completely different class than LTA.

    • @meandmyEV
      @meandmyEV 10 месяцев назад

      It is funny you mention that because my inspiration for buying my EUV with super cruise is partially because I rented a Prius with LTA and loved LTA. I hated just about everything else about the Prius. I am a tech guy but I felt the controls in the car were very confusing and I banged my knee every time I got in. I have to admit though, it outright SIPS gas. I drove it from Newark airport to Albany NY and back and I think I only put like 7 gallons of gas to fill it before I returned it.

    Some EV Presenters are clearly 'distracted drivers' by law. I am surprised some of them have not been arrested. Not only so many EV Presenters break speed limit laws but clearly broadcast this to law enforcement on their videos. I noticed one has started using his passport to hide this information.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  Год назад +1

      It's really going to depend on region when it comes to enforcement, but unfortunately, some people do put content creation ahead of safety. It might not be the prettiest, but I figure a single, mounted camera is the safest way of recording the experience. I also try to maintain a safe driving speed based on the traffic (never more than 5 mph over posted), but some people definitely drive at unsafe speeds.

    I enjoy Super Cruise on my ‘23 EUV. Like you say, it’s great for long boring interstate trips. Few disengagements in my six months of ownership. Once when it lost the cell signal, once when I had speed set a bit too high for the curve, and consistently in one spot on my commute where the map data is missing. It is definitely more safety conscious than other ADAS systems I’ve used.

    Do those lights on the steering wheel keep blinking when Supercruise is engaged or is that just an artifact of the camera? That would be a little annoying to see constantly.
    On another note, I never really understood why Chevy didn't increase the DC charge rate on the Bolt all that much with the model refresh. Is there something specific to the battery chemistry preventing higher charging rates or are they being held back by other factors?

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  Год назад

      The flashing lights aren't visible to the human eye. I'm not sure why it appears on the camera. It could be the angle or something about the color or frequency/hertz that the camera picks up.
      As far as the charging rate, I can only assume that it is a combination of the battery cells (which are limited to 1 C charging) and the charging harness (which appears to be limited to 150 A). They should have upped the CCS socket to 200 A with the 2020 MY refresh, but they didn't. Perhaps they felt that the ~10% increase in peak charging speed wasn't worth it or wouldn't be noticed.

    • @ouch1011

      The flashing lights are infrared LEDs for lighting up your face in dark conditions. Low level infrared light (like these LEDs produce) isn’t visible to our eyes but is visible to a camera.
