It’s impressive as hell that The King is still as sharp as a tack & remembers so many details of 80+ years of his life

Even 16 years after adams death when this interview took place you could still hear sadness in richards voice when he started bringing up adam. He was gonna be a damn good race car driver and a cup winner no doubt.

It is so typical and fitting that Petty gets comfort from a fan. He is the GOLD STANDARD from which all professionals should take inspiration.

I will not go into many details, but I played college football. We were moderately successful. Fans would ask us for autographs. I would sit there and sign until everyone that wanted one got one. Our academic adviser asked why I would do that. I said because my boyhood hero never left until everyone that wanted an autograph had one. That was Richard Petty.

I followed Richard and his racing career for many years. My dad took me took me to Richards property in Level Cross around 1970 . My dad and I were actually walking in the garage where Richard and his maintenance crew were building his cars. Richard was off to the side of the car. I can't explaine how excited I was to be there and my dad was my second best hero for taking me
there. Mom and dad were already split up in that memory but Dad was making up for some lost time.
    Thank you Richard and dad.

Petty has a big heart, you can tell he felt really bad about the child who passed away.

Win or lose I don't care. I support the 43. In my opinion NASCAR should do everything they can to keep the 43 on the track. I liken it to the NHL in regards to the original 6 teams. Maybe I'm way off... but just a thought.

Abel Freeman i agree Lee Petty won the 1st daytona race, the king has won more races than anyone, they've lost family members to the sport. The whole family has had an impact on the sport and now they're treated like a criminal inlaw.
I've been a fan of King Richard since i knew what a race car was. And will probably remain a fan as long as i can.
PS: i think if Adam would still be racing today the Petty's would be better off. Personally i think it took some of the wind out of their sails for a few years. Can ya blame them though? He was 4th generation and seemed to have some talent. I don't think he would have been as good as the King but definitely better than Kyle. He may have gotten to run the 43 eventually.

Josh , you think Nascar will help Petty racing ?
Look what they did to Junior Johnson after he saved their ass by finding a title sponsor for them that lasted 32yrs.
I love the driver's and owners in Nascar , but hate Nascar and their ways.

I agree I get the concept of retiring numbers but there's a great person linked to every number and every sport so it just doesn't seem intelligent when you really think about it it seems better to remember the people who actually raced or whatever you want to call it in whatever sport

One of the nation's top sportsmen. The battles he had on the track in the 60s and 70s were must watch, even on tape-delay!
I always wondered if Petty adopted his signature look of dark glasses and big old hat in part because of that wreck in 1965. He seems like such a good and caring guy, he may have been shy about even facing the admiring public without some type of cover after it. There's no doubt that tragedy affected him more than people could think.

    • @ronaldmink
      @ronaldmink Год назад +1

He got tired of having to change hats all the time in victory lane so he went with the cowboy hat. The glases are due to sensitivity to light. There are other interviews here on RUclips where talks about it. I have heard him talk about it in person as well.

There is a reason he is the King. Soft spoken, class act. I can tell you that there is no other driver, past or present, who loves his fans any more than this man. Petty ran one nite at a tiny dirt track in upstate NY near where I grew up. I think every person in the stands lined up for his autograph. The man stayed there talking smiling and posing for pics and signing autographs till every person in the line was gone. That's what kind of man he is.

Jesus Christ I'm 36 now I remember growing up Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt and sennia as the best drivers on Earth now see what's happened to Michael Schumacher and all these other guys over all these years most race car driver survive these are just the ones we remember cuz they're sad but it's still heart-wrenching to hear Richard Petty essentially rationalizing the death of his grandson because that makes you understand he had to come to terms with it on a fundamental level as a normal person my life is pretty much gone Vine say it's gone to plan would be foolish but you know no one's ever does but the Steve Richard Petty having to try rationalizes grandson's death truly heart-wrenching

@@michaelhill7878 it does, and like everything else Nascar changed and it wasn't all for the best, the new directors, presidents want away from the true Nascar persona which petty is the last man standing in that group, they want diversity, Young good looking drivers etc, I'm 59 and I only watch now because Kyle Busch is still competitive and once he's gone I figure I'm done to , I barely watch it anymore just keep up on the radio if you can find it and not to mention they are expanding across the country away from the southeast that made it what it is or was, like going to Los Angeles , that to me is not one I'd be interested in at all, they could have rebuilt N Wilkesboro and Rockingham, some of the best races in history happened at those sort of tracks, but just my opinion, everybody has one!
