I'm a Red Wings fan, but I 100% agree with you here! The TEAM WIN is the objective, ALWAYS! If Matthews gets his 70th, awesome, celebrate for about 10 seconds then get your asses back in game mode. However, this time of year pushing into the playoffs, last thing any team wants is to enter the Playoff Season cold on a losing skid... Steve Yzerman finished his career with 692 regular season goals. He could've come back the next year and easily squeezed out 8 more goals. But he didn't because he didn't want to be a distraction for his team to get him over the mark. He also had nothing else to prove. Longest Captain Tenure on one team. 3 Stanley Cups. He was a shoe in for the HOF with or without 700 goals. Personally I hope Matthews gets 70. He's a great player... I love success stories! LETS GO RED WINGS!!
He still has a very good chance of reaching 70 and even I as a Red Wings fan hope he can do it.
Honestly, I am just glad he seriously did not get injured when he slammed his back into the boards. That could have been a brutal injury.

I understand your comment but you have to admit, if your son was drafted as a goalie for this Leafs today, would your heart not bleed for him? This team has THE most horrendous structure in their own end than any team I can recall. The defensemen stand flat-footed trying to play goalie in front of their SCREENED goalie and their "marquis" fwds don't support their D when they are under siege. How do you accurately assess Samsonov or Woll or Jones when you've only got 1/2 a team playing in front of them? The options are two: The goalie either STEALS the game for his team even though they are horrendous OR he succumbs to the on-slaught which unjustly puts the focus on the goalie(s)!?!?! This has been going on for many months. Then...we want them to infuse this team with better D-men?!?!? Why????? If you can't form/demand the right structure/discipline, what matter does the number they are wearing make? They can't/won't play FUNDAMENTAL BASICS when defending in their own end!!!! What does it matter if you score 7 goals in a game but the opposition scores 8?
@@shug2795 Exactly. They've been making the same defensive miscues as long as I can remember. They're not alone, however. The Oilers have always lived by the notion that they'll simply outscore their opponents and everything else with take care of itself. That was a winning formula when Gretzky, Coffey, and Messier lead a murderer's row of offensive talent, but it's unwise to think that way in today's game.

So this game really mattered to them. Whereas the Leafs had already secured their playoff spot and the last few games of the season don't matter to them if they win or if they lose. So, the Wings wanted to win more than the Leafs did. If this is too complicated, I can try to simplify if further.

Ну а Мэтьюс, конечно, прирожденный забивала, выбор позиции отменный, скорость и точность броска великолепные. Если в следующие 10 лет его не будут сильно беспокоить травмы, то именно Остон будет следующим кандидатом на переписывание голевых рекордов.

So true. poor GAA Leafs 17th place in that dept. and usually a team that crappy in D gets knocked out early. The Leafs since even the Lou days were never constructed to be sound defensively. Under Dubas the D got even worse and again now the same, and so the same result will be an early exit. A wasted 8 seasons…still can’t produce a playoff run.

@@ultimatebasses can’t disagree. This Leafs team hasn’t got what it takes in the playoffs. Only in 2013, they actually were a very tough opponent for Boston but it was a totally different group then. Boston got very lucky scoring twice very late in the 3rd. The Leafs I think still have the Ballard curse on them. 🤔🤣

the most concerning thing about the last 2 games is 11 goals against .Samsonov has not been sharp but not all his fault .They are so obseessed with getting Matthews to 70 that they hung Samsonov out to dry .Not the kind of defensive effort that will get a win over the Panthers

Correction, playing body before puck is when you play defense. The goalie's job is the puck, not the body. Would love to see Lidstrom give Seider some private lessons for next season. Ken, I think it's about Seider being tired and lacking oxygen as he is expected to eat so many top minutes evenly. That Seider makes many mistakes is what many choose not to see as he always has the excuse against the best.
@@thewizardofoz511 good defense is not leaving your side of your zone and getting too deep and in the crease. Seider is leaving a man uncovered. Sanderson of Ottawa is doing the same. Both players are young and hopefully being coached by veterans. Shooters easily move in close and Sanderson and Seider are a better screen than a goalie.

Jake Sanderson is from my hometown, Whitefish, Montana. I have skated with his dad, Geoff Sanderson. I watch Jake and Mo Seider as much as I can.
What the hell do I know? I tried to play some college then beer leagues until I was 60….now I am 67 and on an old boat in the Bahamas. Just returned from an epic snorkeling trip.
This weekend at my home rink in Montana, my hockey community is having a tournament to honor an old hockey buddy who died in a construction accident when we were in our 50’s. Great tournament, heavily lubricated with alcohol, and great folks. 2300 nautical miles from me right now. Let’s Play Hockey!

Leafs won't get out of the first round. Yeah they have a 70 goal scorer but their goalie can't stop a beachball. That franchise never learns which is surprising considering Toronto is like the hockey capital of the world.

Why persist with 44 and 78 playing together? In fact, neither ought to on the ice but in the press box. Next, it’s worrying that Samsonov is having a Russian depression just before the playoffs. This is the time you need the coach to motivate him. Keefe is not that guy. Bystander has decided to stop playing. The leafs are going to disappoint again and the reason is simple. Leadership. They don’t have it behind the bench. They don’t have it one the ice. And it’s certainly missing at head office.

Sorry to say but the 70 goal distraction is hurting the Leafs. They kept him out there for a 2 minute shift and clearly the Leaf players are focused on feeding him the puck rather than winning the game.

Goaltending is not the problem, defense is. Lyon and Reimer are fine. Husso can be a but streaky but when he's on he's one of the best. Plus the Wings have Trey Augustine coming in the near future. They don't need a tender.
