  • After playing the role of Supergirl on Smallville, Laura Vandervoort discusses the positives and negatives of her time working on the CW’s Supergirl...
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    Laura Vandervoort (Smallville, Handmaid’s Tale) returns to the show this week to explore ideas of following your gut, not comparing yourself to others, and finding happiness through passion. Later in the show we both discuss our thoughts and emotions on the Alison Mack NXIVM situation as the documentary The VOW has been released and sentencing has commenced. We also talk about her troubling situation walking off an HBO show set, the differences in experiences working on Supergirl and Smallville, and how she gets herself to a dark place to prepare for dramatic roles.

    Michael Rosenbaum, in my honest opinion was *thee* greatest live action depiction of Lex Luthor of our time, period (followed closely by John Shea from 'Lois & Clark')

      He is the freakin prototype for lex...too bad snyder was too arrogant to use tried and true actors...bc him opposite cavills superman could have greatly aided the dumpster fire that was BvS

      @@jdelgado243 Y'know, you're one of only a few commenters who does not regard BvS as some sort of masterpiece (which I don't get personally). If Mr Rosenbaum had indeed reprised his role as Lex, that would certainly would've been a massive bonus (Eisenberg played him exactly how I knew he would, a neurotic personality). However, I will add that Snyder is a massive 'Smallville' fan, and apparently took inspiration when approaching 'Man of Steel', which featured actors who had guest starred in that show, namely Amy Adams, Ian Tracey (troublemaker at the bar) & Alessandro Juliani (team member in the snowy mountains who discover the Kryptonian ship).

    • @jdelgado243
      @jdelgado243 2 года назад +4

      @@dannyr2976 i apologize for my misunderstanding this: do you mean that you do not understand my viewpoint of BvS(and honestly the entire DCEU that was tarnished by snyder) or that you do not understand why more people do not see it as a giant shitshow?
      In regards to character portrayals rosenbaum was so much better than eisenberg at the role it isnt a fair fight. The best versions of Lex are not mustache twirling villain; but the charismatic genius that is (rightfully) afraid of an individual that has more power than whole nations. That fear drives him to do unhinged things. Eisenberg played lex like his a mix of jim carrey and mark zuckerberg with a splash of elon for flavor.

    • @dannyr2976

      @@jdelgado243 Poor wording on me, sorry 'bout that! Meant I don't get how others view BvS as some great masterpiece (just don't see that), it's entertaining, even enjoyable in parts for what is it, but overall a giant mess, it tries too hard to cover so much that should've been split into two films, 'Batman vs Superman,' then follow up with 'Dawn of Justice' (the latter would focus on the League characters).
      Getting back to BvS, Superman's mom is in trouble, he finds Batman and tries to get him to listen to reason, they battle for a bit, OK. Supes in doused with Kryptonite gas, becomes weakened, fine, at some point during the fight regains his strength, *fight's over* , but instead continues to fight... and loses. And please somebody tell me, when Batman is positioned on top of the crane and fires the tracker onto the back of the truck, how does he make it to the Batmobile so quickly to charge at the bad guys shooting?

    • @jdelgado243
      @jdelgado243 2 года назад +1

      @@dannyr2976 no worries. Yea. BvS was such a mess, and the extended edition wasnt much better, but quite a bit longer.
      My biggest problem with the plot was that it seemed that lex's master plan required for a lot of accidents to occur to help him along. And how does the worlds smartest detective let himself get manipulated so easily in that way? And the reason they become besties is bc their moms have the same name? Yea...what a great connection. Im not going to get into all of the plot points snyder started and couldnt figure out where to go with it, or how to do the characters justice.

    Michael was good in the role of Lex in Smallville. Laura was good as Kara. The show was well cast and performed in general. I had a problem with the writing after a while. Clark not being able to fly for ten seasons when every other Kryptonian picked it up immediately. He started to look like the learning-disabled Kryptonian. Also, Clark's dishonesty as a negative influence on Lex undermined our view of the central character.

Which is another way of saying, "There's this part of me that's very proud of what I did and I'm not sure I can overcome that part to participate is someone else's portrayal of the character." There's no shame in admitting this and having enough self-awareness to identify it is a sign of humility. Given the success of Christopher Reeve's version of Superman, it would not surprise me if he felt the same way prior to accepting the role on Smallville.

    There is only one Lex!!! Michael's portrayal of the character was the best. Sure Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey and some of the others did great but MB's portrayal of Lex won't be topped imo. Maybe Michael had an advantage in that he got more screen time and was able to delve into his backstory but he portrayed so many of Lex's idiosyncrasies: his superiority complex, his smugness, his ego, his ability to scheme, plot and manipulate others. The portrayal of Lex's father and the impact of a hyper critical (and sometimes absent) father figure was also a stroke of genius.

      I some ways yes, in other ways no. About the shirtless scenes, lots of women get no nudity clauses in their contracts with strict rules on skin, men don't cause there less likely to have negative career consequises from it. I've argued this so many times in comment sections (sometimes with women) who seem to want that association with women with and beauty, so if there is a 'beauty standard' (to which I wholeheartedly disagree with) then we cannot be shocked by the careers of certain women in Hollywood.

    I like Rosenbaum but I'm sick of people saying things are easier for guys. No, Michael, they're easier for you. Have you seen how many fat dudes are out there? 🤤

      Right? He's talking like 90% of the men working in superheroes stuff doesn't have to be fit, whether they're the main character or not.

    To me the best Lex was Jean Hackman followed by only by Michael Rosenbaum. I loved Hackman because he could be funny and terrifying at the same time and that is something very few actors can accomplish. John Shea and Kevin Spacey had a little of the too but they came across as either sleezy or unlikable although they were good villains I just never felt like wanted to see things from their perspective. Michael portrayal of Lex was warn and was just what the show needed to build the friendship between these two Iconic characters. The show made you want Clark to tell Lex the truth every time these were on screen together. Michael made you believe that Lex was fighting his inner self and really wanted to be a hero. He always gave a solid performance and I would love to see him play the part as a more seasoned Lex.

      Ah yes, Jean Grey Hackman, my all time favorite psychic omega level actor.
