  • John Schneider shares stories of how he attempted to turn down his role as Jonathan Kent on Smallville… multiple times! Plus, he touches on the deeper reason for him deciding to do the show.
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
John Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard, Smallville) joins this week to open up on the success he’s had in Hollywood over the last several decades through the idea of expecting greatness in one’s self, rather than anticipating failure. John also explores the differences between one’s ego and destiny, while sharing how he has lacked nervousness through the strength of his own optimism and ignorance. We talk about his wife’s battle with cancer, John’s experience on Smallville and Dukes, and also how he was able to transform from the “fat kid” into a Hollywood success story.

@@ron.hertzberg You're right when you say Kevin Costner destroyed the role of Jonathon Kent. Or more accurately, the disgraceful writing and directing absolutely destroyed that character in every way as it couldn't have been further from who Jonathon Kent is and always has been. He was more like a Bizarro Jonathon Kent. It's no wonder that ''Clark'' was so fucked up and lacking in any heroic qualities.

I think the Father/Son relationship as well as the Husband/Wife Relationship was very good in Smallville. I just think he played Jonathan Kent is a Working Class Everyman who had to deal with the fact that his son was different and had extraordinary powers. I liked all the other characters too, but I found him to be so inspirational. Smallville had been on the air about 3 years when I caught the last half of an episode with Chris Reeves. That 20 minutes had me hooked. For awhile, trying to deal with lifelong depression in new ways, I tried to just tell myself "it doesn't matter" when something didn't go right. I didn't expect it to sink in the way it did, but that sort of reinforcement absolutely does. There's a chemical component I can't really do much about (antidepressants have made it so much worse across my life), but he's right. There's a mental component, too, and we are (I am) responsible for how choose to see and interact with the world.

My guess is that he paused working outside on his real farm, or working in his home studio (behind him) to do this web chat. He's not Hollywood.

the chris reeve superman movies are great, but he might be right when he says smallville might be the best part of the mythos (at least on screen.), it's at least not something i have arguments against without pulling animation into it

John turned down offers to be on Smallville but accepted a role as a porn star on Nip and Tuck. I think I'd rather play Lex Luthor that play a porn star. Imagine the horrifying things vivid dreaming kids will dream about that! I am glad John took the role. He was a great Jonathon Kent. Smallville amplified the Superman Legend. Bigtime. And Johns positive attitude towards life is VERY inspiring a so true. Michael too.
