Fourteen years later, and this is still one of the most important and insightful speeches ever made about anything, not just music. I'm not kidding.
The great moment came for me when he recounted how jurors had told him to find something better to do with his life, and that he could never become a great musician. As listeners and the music public, I think we have a responsibility to reach out and tell the young musicians, directly to them, one on one, how their performances and development have changed and moved you personally.
I have heard so much about Jon Nakamatsu from everyone who has met him and heard him. all of it uniquely warm and fullsome in praise for him as a pianist and as a person. The humanity, wit, generosity and intelligence of this man, and his generosity abounds here. Everyone should see this speech.
What a great personality, and outstanding performer! I just accompanied him in Beethoven's 4th piano concerto with MSO.
What a magnificent speech! This is obviously an intelligent and caring man with much more to teach than music. Best to Mr. Nakamatsu.
I love Jon Nakamatsu. He is a most gifted, inspiring, brilliant, witty, modest, and encouraging artist, teacher and mentor. With gratitude. BRILLIANT.
Still my favorite!
I like this guy. very smart and inspiring. His playing is as good as his speaking.
A wonderful speech! Thank you so much for sharing!
Jon's speech was amazing: awesome, funny, light-hearted, self-deprecating, sensitive, consoling, thought-provoking, and ultimately triumphant! I love hearing Jon at the keyboard, and having heard this speech, I love him ever so much more. What a great communicator! Jon's words applies to us all, whether we were competitors in the 2007 Van Cliburn Piano Competition For Outstanding Amateurs or not. You rock, Jon!
So touching! He is a big man. Thanks very much for sharing this fabulous speech with us!
I first saw this 15 years ago and have watched it several times since and shared it. Absolutely brilliant pianist - and so is this speech!
A very humble speech! I am impressed! This speech is the best speech I've ever heard!!!!! I am very impressed and inspired that he still loved music, even at times of failure, when he got his screenings rejected or lost competitions! But even so, his humbleness and love to music had gained him a big reward he deserved at the Van Cliburn. He's a true musician! Thank you very much for posting this video! I will never forget this video, because it's packed with lessons to teach!
Man this speech is so inspirational, thanks for posting it, Jon seems to be a great guy.
And many thanks to YOU, Carol, for bringing Jon to our state conference! I will never forget meeting him and being so very inspired not only by his amazing performance, but also by the kindness that glows from him!

Spectacular speech. I don’t exactly know why, but this gave me shivers and almost drove me to tears. :)
I saw him perform two days ago, and he had a chat with the conductor before playing. He was as warm, funny and self-deprecating then as he is in this video.
Jon, This is a wonderful presentation. I'm grateful our friend Conchita pointed me to it. Bravo!
Thank you so much for putting this on RUclips. It was one of the surprising delights of the IPCOA 2007, and now I can send it to others of all ages who compete in all sorts of contests. And I'm definitely joining the Losers Club!
Fantastic! A message for all of us.
This is brilliant!
One of my favorite speeches of all time!
I ran into him at one of the Tower Records
stores one day, besides taking the advantage for the autogtraph, I got a chance to chat with him. His humbleness
is enlightening to me, his personality is just as beautiful as his music!
Inspiring!
That was hilarious. I had the pleasure of sitting by Mr. Nakamatsu and hearing him play last summer, and it was great. It's nice to see a pianist with such a great personality and has an immense talent as well.
Awesome...and inspirational...
I've seen Jon in person many times!
He is such a funny nice man to be around.
What a great man.... and performer. I just saw him play tonight at EMF!
This is one of the best speeches I've ever heard ;P
Well done, Jon!
man, really good speech! :)
amazing speech. its really made me see the light through such a brutal and merciless field of life.
Sounds like i could benefit from talking with nakamatsu...
That was brilliant.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I belong to the North State Symphony League in Redding, Ca. Kyle, the conductor told us to check out this video. We are SO excited to have you come play Rachmaninoff this weekend. You are indeed an inspiration!
Hey Jon - I liked your speech. We took a class together at Stanford (German listening and speaking skills). Your words definitely soothed my wounded psyche from a rejection I received just this past week. I'll try to catch you in Winchester!

Jon Nakamatsu is so funny! I saw play the Chopin B Flat Minor at St.Patrick's Cathedral in San Francisco and he brought the house down! It was a full house too!
He came to our school today! :D
How nice to learn that the opposite of 'lose' is 'find'
I actually told Mr. Nakamatsu that I liked this speech when I got his autograph last weekend (after his awesome rach2 performance at SF). I also told him I got rejected from Jr. Bach and he said "welcome to the club!"
Here I am, once again, after messing up in a competition for the 400th time.
I’m applying, today!!! 😂
That has to be Iisaka-san laughing uproariously in the audience at around 6:20, when Jon relates the anecdote about "Japanese people can't play Chopin". Ha!
I can relate. At age 9-12 I kept on getting rejection letters from the losers club. They kept on giving me 1st places that I had to give up and pursue rock.
What does he say from 2:55 to 2:58? Thanks!
"It's that I feel a very special kinship with you as amateur musicians."
love this speech :DDD anyways...who are those that were laughing soooo freaking loud down there? its kinda annoying... -.-
