I've seen that reaction. I was at one of their shows a few years ago when they were touring MPP and a member of the "security" was an old guy probably in his 70s...he was quite old. And he had this look on his face the whole time that was a mix of utter confusion and utter awe. He looked like someone from the 17th century who had been transported to the future to hear what music sounded like in the 21st century. He was totally confounded. It was quite amusing... :)
@Bagatellamusic The concept of Animal Collective IS to put more effort into sound design and atmosphere. It doesn't hurt that, in my opinion, they also "write" some amazing songs.
@Bagatellamusic "a bit more into song writing" are you not hearing the vocal melodies? Theyre fucking infectious! What I love about AnCo is that they manage to merge the atmospherics with poppy beats and melodies seamlessly.
@cronoyuha1 Exactly! they're a visual band in everything they do. No wonder they're making a visual album!--I was surprised to find out how surreal this music really is, because on the surface they don't seem so daring. And you're right, David and Noah aren't slouches when it comes to writing.
don't get me wrong but this song is just absolutely spectacular!!!!!! everyone criticizing Animal Collective and saying what and how they should change about their music please be quiet... it's music they have created, it's their game, once you change one aspect of it (someone saying they should focus more on songwriting, less on atmosphere) it's not their absolute music. leave it as it is - perfect
@schmitty3 that IS their sound writing. the sounds are the song dummy. and they have real strong melodies in simple harmonic and rythmic context thats what i call good effort on songwriting
@kblavie I wouldn't try to justify it because I don't hear it. I was surprised to see people thinking this wasn't a good version of grass, or didn't replicate the studio version well or that avey tares vocals are off. I honestly would have never even considered those things unless I read this comments. To me this is flawless and and way beyond average, and thats from my ear not from a loyalty to AC or anything like that
@Bagatellamusic i think that's absolutely wrong. sorry. songs like in the flowers or Daffy Duck and banshee beat would be so different without the amazing soundscapes and atmosphere that make them what they are.
this song tickles my happy bone (not the happy bone most internet users are trying to get tickled). great song. and if anyone is interested, i recently finished my first album "probably not for people on strong drugs, but maybe only appealing to those who are" and i am trying to spread the word to some open and like minded music listeners. check it out if interested. i am brand new to this and would really like some honest feedback.
@mlpayne89 I think the concept of Animal Collective is better than the songs themselves. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but hearing their albums always leaves me a bit unsatisfied. They should put less effort into sound design and atmosphere and a bit more in songwriting. Still, a great and inspirational band!
Bagatellamusic are you joking hahaha go and read some of their lyrics. Apart from some of the fun and simple ones they're fucking genius at lyric writing and the lyrics are complemented by terrific vocal melodies
i just feel like ripping my face off when he yells. its so good.

Hard to believe this was 11 years ago... time really does go by fast
I love this band so much
i saw animal collective at lollapalooza, and i was truly blown away
I'm so happy Deakin's back again! They're great live as a trio, but it's a whole nother level with all four of them.
And Avey kinda looks like Denis from It's Always Sunny on here....
This would be so much fun to play live.
0:10 did geo just lick his beer?
yes. i do that sometimes when i spill a little bit and it drips down the side.
This is the best song, in my opinion, and this is the best performance of it. I think that was the best concert. Love it so much.
I am proud of deakin, he really shows up here
AWESOME performance!!!
This one of my favorite songs!
Panda bear is god.
this is the first song I heard by AnCo...and I'm so glad..this song kicks ass
@Bagatellamusic The concept of Animal Collective IS to put more effort into sound design and atmosphere. It doesn't hurt that, in my opinion, they also "write" some amazing songs.
this is so great, also that beer lick was gold
diggin the headlamp!!! hope its a petzl
POW POW NOW NOW POW POW NOW NOW POW POW NOW NOW
this is such an amazing live performance by them...

@Bagatellamusic "a bit more into song writing" are you not hearing the vocal melodies? Theyre fucking infectious! What I love about AnCo is that they manage to merge the atmospherics with poppy beats and melodies seamlessly.
Sorry if I'm 15 years late on this but why did Geologist lick the bottle like dat? 0:09
this is a really cool performance
my favorite song of theirs
Now now pow pow
@cronoyuha1

lol dave makes some crazy faces
kudos for the guy making it in the last three second
lol at guy dancing at end
@jcskater89
panda bear is the drummer. the guitarist/lead singer is avey tare and the other guitarist is deakin
cause u like to see me offteennnn but u don’t need to see me oftennnn that part always makes me go feral
don't get me wrong but this song is just absolutely spectacular!!!!!! everyone criticizing Animal Collective and saying what and how they should change about their music please be quiet... it's music they have created, it's their game, once you change one aspect of it (someone saying they should focus more on songwriting, less on atmosphere) it's not their absolute music. leave it as it is - perfect
this is fucking sick
@Bagatellamusic "They should put less effort into sound design and atmosphere" no way
00:10
@schmitty3 that IS their sound writing. the sounds are the song dummy. and they have real strong melodies in simple harmonic and rythmic context thats what i call good effort on songwriting
they'd be like: "hmph.. look at all those hipsters"
This is why feels is so fucking good, the live versions of the songs are better than the studios.
Yeah he does!
Crazy like a fox!
brian licks the side of his beer bottle in the beginning.
@mlpayne89 maybe thats the only reason YOU liked them... anyways if they're too good, they can't suck, right?
than thats how good they are that they dont need to be good!!!
@beaneroopie Umm, that's the whole point.
need to see them with the deakster
@kblavie I wouldn't try to justify it because I don't hear it. I was surprised to see people thinking this wasn't a good version of grass, or didn't replicate the studio version well or that avey tares vocals are off. @TheIndustrialism They're hard to play live because they have to sing really loud.
Animal Collective is so amazing. Although Geologist has some nasty hair aha.
Whats with all changes since I was aware?
@maninblack763 you never know, he could be a princeton tech kind of guy
@kblavie hahahahaha the whole time i was reading this I was thinking "Holy shit! My friend litterally told me the same thing" whats going down Kyle?
then they are really good
What kind of mixer is Geologist using here? I know he uses Mackie now but this almost looks like a Behringer
*lol 0:11 seconds in Geo licks his beer
lol
@kiefhouse i loled
hahahahahahah Geo at 0:10
hahahaha yesss
these malta festival performances are great but the coachella ones were really off.
What guitar solo?
@Bagatellamusic i think that's absolutely wrong. sorry. songs like in the flowers or Daffy Duck and banshee beat would be so different without the amazing soundscapes and atmosphere that make them what they are.

smoke weed errday
hahaha Geologist at :11.
wow, I didn't know Panda bear shredded the guitars so hard. thats sick
@kelwfoolPJ You're so stereotypical.
this is what you get when you give supergeniuses access to psychedelic drugs
bagatellamusic, are you joking? please say you're joking.
that was one of the most idiotic things i've ever read in my life.
@mlpayne89 I think the concept of Animal Collective is better than the songs themselves. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but hearing their albums always leaves me a bit unsatisfied. They should put less effort into sound design and atmosphere and a bit more in songwriting.

those poor, poor drums...
Put less effort into sound design!? That would result in a band that is not animal collective
im on grass lol
Imagine how hard it is to keep focused on your notes when you're high like him ;-)
i love these guys but their instrumental abilities are equivalent to a band of five year olds with a.d.d.
Wow this live version is just awful
not half as bad as i thought it would be lmao
Without copious amounts of drugs, they are the worst live band. Possibly ever?
Try to perfectly sing the whole Feels album live for a whole audience. Then after that try talking, or even breathing. Your throat would not be kind.
JoeJustJoe I don't think you understand the significance of intensity in live performances. Sober or not, their shows are good.
+JoeJustJoe WOOOOOOORD! xP
JoeJustJoe I like all of their work and I've seen them live without drugs and they're good throughout. I hate this "lulz anco is for druggies" shit
grass
