You can always tell from the way he finishes that he just doesn't want to stop playing....Hell, does anybody want him to stop playing?! With any luck, the good Doctor's music will just keep going on forever and ever.

June 10th 2019, four days after you left this world for that great assembly above. Take your place at that golden piano and back up the others. We are going to miss you forever. It is raining in my heart. RIP Dr. John.
I had the blessed good fortune of spending a few moments w him backstage after a show. My old friend Bobby was playing sax with him then. He was very cordial.
Enriched us all, Professor. Peace on your Great Soul. Much loved, sorely missed.
All the best on the way, Doctor John and thanks for all the music.
have been so fortunate to have seen him live a handful of times but years apart ~ making it always apparent that his daily playing allows his songs and arrangements to evolve over time into sublime perfection ~ no other way I can describe it except that's the only way to achieve transcendent nirvana: daily playing so that music is your life
Thank you Mac, for being in the right place back at the right time!
All my respect and gratitude for Lovers of Dr. John's music I miss him a lot. I was not able to say good-bye at the right time. I'm doing it now ,joining in The Litanie des saints. May the Lord take good care of you. And, please allow me to kiss your hands

Dr. John been going strong since the late 60's. Saw him once in Ottawa in a small club called Le Hibou (the Owl) he was fantastic then - seems he's got his satchel o' Gris-Gris and is still walkin' on guilded splinters all the way down to Madam Roux!
This is the real deal.

The 1st time I saw the doctor me and my friends didn't know what to expect he burst onto the stage in a yellow chicken suit from head to toe the feathers were so long they seem to be sticking straight out even the crown on his chicken head was about a foot high well he was dancing around the making chicken noises everyone was clapping and telling except for me and my friends we didn't know what to think remember this was about a 100 years ago long story short when he sat down and started playing that piano and singing I loved him ever since and he did the whole show in that crazy chicken it was really something

Good night. Didn't he ramble.
Thanks a lot !
rip, mac! love you brother.
Awesomeness
"didn't he ramble" IS NOT about a guy who robbed whites, it's a song stateing the fact that the person who is now gone may now be dead, but they sure did have a great time about it while they were here on this earth; that's why it's sung after the body is put in the crypt and the funeral procession is leaving the cemetery. It's meant to be splice for the grieving as to say they are gone now but what a great time he had while they were earthly.
I should now, I'm from NOLA and been to many a wake and funeral procession. Im also Irish and plan on having it played at my wake.
Check out the original by jellyroll Morton
Man I got turned to Jelly by The Dirty Dozen "jelly's roll" when I first started doing sound in nawlings on a regular basis kept it on repeat for probably a year sinking my teeth into real new Orleans then I flopped over to James Booker,
Thank you for a more in-depth explanation. I've never been crazy about closer walk with thee but this makes a good amount of sense and I like it very much.. i'm a flaming lutheran. I really enjoyed Dr. John. He was one of a kind. Everyone is. But not everyone lives up to what that potential is that's way down deep inside of them. So may he rest in peace. God what a group of good people must be up there playing..
Thank you for clarification. ❤️🎶
Sad, another legend gone 😥
Sweet!
You will be missed.
Sounds like All In The Family intro song.
J Fitz Yes, "Those Were the Days", by Charles Strouse, and/or "Remembering You" by Roger Kellaway. Both good tunes, but that figuration, in 8th notes with an ascending diatonic scale starting on the fifth / Sol, then going up until the b3 (or #2) / Ri, and ending on the third / Mi, (and starting on beat 2 of the bar, and ending on beat 1 of the next bar), goes back even before those two tunes. The earliest appearance I can remember, of this figure, complete with octave-chorded tremolo on the top note as the 'payoff', is the start of the first theme of "Sleepy Hollow Rag" by the great Clarence Woods, from 1918.

That was exactly what I was going to type, but didn’t feel like it.
Papa john gordy came out with"ramble"in the late 50's,but the doctor does it well.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Gracias,que mas se puede decir
joyous.
oh yeah !
don't git no betta, din dis!!!!!
brilliant
Too bad this genius is walking the staircase to the stars.
yes... new orleans roots...
How am I supposed to whistle this?
Closer Walk With Thee first, of course . . .
You Tube is a mini world in itself..Don't ever ask questions like this.. you might get an answer. The same you already know
good song to go out to. sorry man
I first saw Dr John on a late night TV show here in England called "The old grey Whistle test" his music was a real contrast to the Prog Rock and Underground stuff that was usually featured on the show but somehow fitted in perfectly.
Who wouldn't want to be able to play piano like that?
RIP Dr John
WOW
👍🏿👍🏿
Kinda' makes you want to run down the center aisle and throw yourself on the alter...rededicating your life after such an uplifting experience...
If anyone ever rambled it was Mac R. for sure. Butcher or no.
What album is this off?
Did somebody die ;)
@DEnsminger100 At first read this made me LOL, but if that the feel n you get that what you better do!!
Intro and outro sound like a fugue on the chorus of The Tennessee Waltz.
And remember, he's only playing the piano because he had to give up the guitar due to injury.
.
Anyone remember Papa John Gordie??
Didn't He Ramble is about a dude that robbed whores; Closer Walk With Thee is a Jesus tune! Somehow Mac put them together as one song!!!
+Mike Mal Don't know how much fact is in the story, but Jesus told the robber on one of the crosses beside him "today you will be with me in paradise".
They're both played by traditional New Orleans Funeral bands, quite often both played at the same funeral
Plus they're both gospel melodies
