it's pretty surprising because to me there is not many things that are less interesting than watching someone go to a restaurant
I'm the same. Those illuminated floats are just fantastic. I showed my husband that video and he was amazed.
Maybe Chris and Co could get more involved in one of those festivals next year. After all the ramen and food challenges they partake in every year, pushing one of those floats about must be good for the waistline.

Aha! That explains 'why' every single video with a bowl of ramen on the thumbnail turns up on my recommended list on the day it's published.
Yet...when it comes to more 'travelly' things or the videos that have the word haunted in the title - they can take up to 6 months to appear in my list!
I'm still finding videos I've never seen 'years' after they've been produced.
To be honest, I much prefer the travel and hauntings over the food ones. Shame RUclips focusses more attention on the latter.
As a listener of older Luke and Pete episodes, it is always a delight to hear Pete say “IT’S BEEN”
I admire Chris's commitment to putting out a video every day, however, I was feeling guilty that I didn't have time to watch them all, and was falling behind, waiting for an opportunity to catch up. So a slowpoke like me is happy for them to come out at a slower pace. My fella got me the book for my birthday, really enjoyed it, very amusing and very moving in parts. I hope you do a volume 2 or some other book one day, you have a great writing style.

The yukimushi appears around November in the mountains of Kyoto. I got to see them a few years ago. They came down like snow and I got confused for a moment if it was actually snowing or not. They are the cutest little things and I get really excited when I see them, but only around November to December.
I live in Sapporo and see yuki mushi every fall/winter but it's usually only for a few days
I just saw the news about the earthquake and Tsunami. I wish you and all people in Japan that are affected all the best.
The Yuki Mushi swarm is so strange.
One second, there is nothing, and suddenly, its tooons of them, flying with the wind.
Abd an hour later, they are gone again. Repeat for a few weeks.
Do you know what causes them? I assume it's their breeding season like cicadas?

I was impressed how next to no bugs existed here, and suddenly WHAM! Tons of snow bugs!. Appearing as sudden as they disappeared!

The Jesus grave in Japan reminds me a lot of American roadside attractions. Places like the House on the Rock that was featured in American Gods, the Little A'Le'Inn near Area 51 in Nevada, there arre 2 statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox in Northern California alone.

Based on what I've heard, Japan has a very strange relationship with Christianity. The Tokugawa Shogunate, while keeping the country locked down, severely persecuted Christians. And, based on what I see in modern Japanese pop culture, the Japanese still don't really understand it.
It is kinda funny how many westerners see Christianity as bland and run of the mill while viewing eastern religions (that they know little about) as exotic and mystical. But in Japan, that seems to be flipped.
Well, it's based on where you are and what cultures/religions you're within proximity of. Of course europeans and north americans would be fascinated by the east, whether that's india, china, japan, or korea cause they feel more new and interesting than what they're used to. Same the other way. It makes life a bit more fun.
I don’t know about bland or run of the mill. Christianity here in the states can be 1-100 and anywhere in between. Of course the normal run of the mill stuff is much more common, but with Mega churches, Westboro Baptist, Waco Texas cult and other churches that branched off like Mormons and Jehova Witness could easily be scene as abnormal. Heck, as a kid who grew up Catholic, all the dancing and singing in a Baptist church the first time I saw it had me wondering what was going on as well.
On the mass fish die off event, off the Hokkaido coast. I read an online article from the South China Morning Post, where they had experts suggesting most likely this was a natural phenomenona. Which was caused due to a sudden change in water temperatures from a snap cold weather change, which had caused a very rapid drop in the oxygen levels in water due the sudden freezing and turning to ice of some of the water around Hokkaido.
It's obviously because radioactive water only affecting sardines. (I'm being sarcastic)
As you already know, Every month, mass die-offs of fish/whale occur in oceans and rivers around the world. Have been around for a long time.
I saw the same phenomenon of little flies carrying cotton in autumn here in Utah USA. They were swarming everywhere and were very aggressive and would bite and try to get in your eyes nose and ears.
Something you mentioned that I specifically appreciate about your channel, is that you highlight the food but it's not all about food.
I end up watching a lot of these food videos because I'm interested in the travel aspect and the culture and the history of different areas. So it's nice to have a mixture of interesting information, a little bit of food, cool destinations, that you and sharla sprinkle throughout your videos.

This is a thing. My colleage is from Hokkaido and she talked to me about the yuki mushi. It's probably a LOT worse than you think it is. She showed me a vvideo about a few weeks ago about what its like there. The flies actually look really fluffy and cute

I looked up that Tosa Inu breed, it seems to be allowed here in Canad and I think I might have seen it before... if it is indeed the same breed that I've seen, it is GIANT.

The Tosa Inu looks very much like one of our South African dog breeds the “boerboel”. Similar cross breeding I’m sure. The boerboel is a popular family and property guardian dog here, originally bred to guard people and livestock against even big cats like lions. Extremely loyal, not to be messed with!

Fun fact: There was once a theory that proposed by certain Europeans during the Meiji restoration that the Ainu descended from one of the 12 lost tribes of Israel, so Jesus dieing in Aomori could derive from this idea.
28:00 i did not have luck ordering a side of rice at a couple places i tried.
The second place i went to explained they pre-allocated enough rice for their entrees to ensure rhey had enough by the end of the night. Your mileage may vary depending on where you try
"The ups and downs of travel" I feel is like the literary version of 'cue to training montage'... and I mean, they just need a reenactment... maybe Jesus fighting some bandits, invoking the power of god, turns into some kind of robot, destroys the Mongols... you know... all the classics.

Hinako Shijou from the King of Fighters series has a Tosa Inu that she dresses up in those sumo garbs. I didnt know that was something they did in real life tho til now....Thought the game just made it up cause Hinako loves sumo lol

Well, you know how the Japanese love their OVAs and alternate stories. Honestly, the Aomori/Shingo version is only slightly less fantastical than the original.
As for the Yukimushi, it turns out that Eriosoma lanigerum, or the Wooly Apple Aphid, appears anywhere apples are cultivated. They were first identified in Great Britain. So a British organism invading Japan and thriving in Tohoku...well, food for thought anyway.

Interesting stuff as always... I was a bit surprised to hear dog fighting might still be a thing there. That does make me wonder, are animal rights a "thing" in Japan like they often are in the west? I get the sense that keeping pets is less regulated than in Canada (where I'm from) or the US, at least.

I was at a family get together recently where a family member that had lived in Japan for a year described an incident involving a large centipede. She said that it had large pincers and was the size of her foot. It scaled the wall went onto the ceiling and fell onto her face before she flung it out the door. I was curious about other bug/animal stories that you may have about times when something intruded upon your home.
Respectfully, while I enjoy your channel, I don't care enough to demand daily uploads. They way I end up consuming your videos is generally by adding them to my Watch Later queue to catch up on however many I've missed.

Hey Chris, I don't know how interested in Japanese film, but I recently watched Shin Godzilla, and really enjoyed the film, it dragged at some certain bits, but I also heard the film was censored and re-edited a decent bit because of the deduction of human bones among the flesh dropped by the monster. Aside from your thoughts on the film, do you think there would be another reason for the censorship besides a religious context? The creator had said he wanted to include more scenes showing the biomass left behind godzilla as having human remains to create themes of connection between humans and ecology crisis of the world

One thing i dont get with youtubers is, why do you have several channels? I dont get it. All it probably does is that your main channel grow lesser than it would otherwize, and the videos that is uploaded on the sub channels get lesser views. It is not like people would be completely confused by for example seeing a podcast video on the main channel, so I dont get it. Just upload everything on one channel. But maybe im missing something.
Because not as many people watch certain videos like podcasts and alternate content that people don’t usually make the RUclips algorithm stops recommending all of the videos including the main ones due to the perceived poor performance of the others

Regarding the Jesus stuff and the people offended by you making fun of it: No cultural belief should be and (logically speaking) can be sacrosanct in and off itself, for the offended person has not any more rights on the cultural belief in question than you do. Any believer who denies this is usually unable to defend said belief when critical questions are asked, and they are trying to argue that those questions are unethical to ask in order to come out on top, if not factually then at least "morally". And that is their goal to begin with: "Gaslighted virtue signaling", communicating "I am a good person and you are a bad person and I am even better for calling you out." There is a word for that, even in the Bible, and Jesus quite reportedly had a special place in his heart for this kind of people.

I used to listened to this podcast regularly. But one time, while I was listening, something that Pete said or something about his demeanor just made me stop the podcast. I’ve tried to listen every once in awhile, but as soon as Pete starts talking, I have to turn it off. Unfortunately, I cant stand his voice or his thoughts now, so I have to turn it off as soon as I hear Chris’ intro for Pete.
I’m sure Pete is a nice person in real life, unless this is him in real life, but it’s just hard stop for me these days.
I still listen when Chris has Sharla or different guest, but since majority of the podcast is with Pete, I can’t listen anymore.
What changed? I quite enjoy his personality
