HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! While we're safe, our thoughts go out to the people in Ishikawa and the Noto Peninsula, who've had a sad start to the year with yesterday's earthquake.
@@nicholausbuthmann1421Don't worry about Tokyo, the worst that happened here is probably a pen fell off a table or something, worry about Ichigaya Also a plane just exploded and 5 people died so that's a far bigger deal in Tokyo now.
Hope you and the whole Abroad Brood (Including the Trash Taste fam) are alright after the Earthquake 🗾⛩❤🩹 Also, I Love the Kei car, it's so retro cute 🚙
Hearing you Chris talking about how much you enjoyed the Kei car reminds me how much I enjoyed my first car in 1986. It was a second hand 1975 Honda Civic, which I took to a Japanese car enthusiast car mechanic here in Sydney for an almost new motor build. I loved it because I could park it absolutely anywhere. Only because we moved to Japan in 1992 for 2 years did I sell it to my husband’s niece. But sadly she lived near a beach and it rusted out. I’m sure it was the same size as the Kei car you have been driving in.
Happy New Year fellas! Regarding imports, the question about importing kei cars got me looking it up for the United States, which forbids the importation and registration of any non-federalized, foreign-market vehicle that isn’t at least 25 years old, including kei cars. But we've got similar cars here, called smart cars, but they're barely big enough for 2 people.
Chris, in light of the earthquake that sadly hit Japan, I thought it might be an interesting topic to cover for those of us outside of the country/tourists. Things like the Japanese approach to natural disasters, drills, what foreigners and tourists should know and any anecdotes you might have.
Honwstly they are super prepared, I mean, not perfect and its defiently better than koreas useless sms warning system that goes off all day every day, But for example, I stayed in Osaka for a night in a newish hotel 20something floors up and under the bed was a big crate, opened it up and its full of emergency supplies, water, food, radio etc etc etc etc. Never seen that in any hotel before except japan. And despite the fact that the earthquake the other day was a natural disaster, the train companies were so appologetic that the shinkansen was "about" 10 minutes late ...
I remember watching the "Stop the pigeon" show! It was some kind of offshoot of Wacky Races, with Dick Dastardly and Muttley leading a flying squadron in what seemed like WWI trying to catch a messenger pigeon and, of course, failing miserably.
I ordered a snack box from Sakuraco and that took a month to arrive in the UK. So getting a car here in much the same time seems pretty good to me! Happy New Year
They are legal in the Channel Islands (granted, not part of the EU), there's heaps in Guernsey as with the narrow roads, small parking spaces and low speed limits they are the perfect car for islanders.
2 hours after landing in Japan - an older couple slowly and respectfully bowed to us as we stood aside to let them out the lift at a subway station. It was not the first example of culture shock I was expecting. But god damn Japan is cool.
So, that cartoon was actually called Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines, and the song was Stop The Pigeon - they say "catch" once, in the line "And Clunk you invent me a thingamabob, That catches that pigeon or I'll lose my job".
Happy new year! Glad to hear you're safe! Hope the people in the prefectures that got hit the hardest will recover soon and get all support they need to do so. That must be really hard to start the new year with. Keep us updated if possible, please?
Canada and U.S. have similar versions of those tiny cars. Problem is they easily get blown and flipped over when large trucks pass them really fast due to the air pressure or something like that. They are pretty hazardous
I remember the one time I accidentally went on the woman's carriage. I did the "deer in headlights" look and walked through to the next carriage. I think it was when I was travelling as I don't use the train during peak hours now I live here.
Happy New Year To All and A Safe One Too Please. As I CERTAINLY Hope Everyone Survived The Quake & Tsunami Warning.....Great Prosperity, Health, & SAFETY In This New Year To All !
UK wise you can acctually pretty much import any Vehicle you like, just needs to meet requirements for its age to be allowed on the road which pretty much every Kei car does, there were even a few sold here new or sold with a more Euro sized engine (1l+). Did see a truck aim at and strike a Squirell coming home from school once, had a similar reaction to Pete although these days I'm going into hunting them and Pigeons which is legal here on Private land as long as its not one of the protected species.
@@digiwatt not quite, it was designed as a small City car but able to share parts with the existing Morris Minor (hence some early Minis being badged Mini Minor) which started at just under the Litre engine wise. Closest Euro equivlent would acctually be the Smart car as it was designed to similar spec and could be had as a Kei for a while in Japan.
Can confirm you can import kei cars to the uk. In fact a few got sold here (for example the copen) although barely anyone bought them. I want to own one one day.
Remember being at Uni in Aberdeen and seeing someone accidentally run over a seagull then, in panic, reverse back over it as people were dancing round the car shouting at her to stop moving.
I realize its not a common meat but pidgeons are actually delicous. (Similar to how pigs transform into "pork" when they are dead. This is called "Squab")
The car has to be registered to be on the UK road. Driven or parked. This includes the car has to have road tax and insurance. The registration just means the car has a legal keeper. So there is a come back to somebody for speeding tickets or parking tickets.
I embarassed myself in Korea by being the ignorant foreigner in the 5 items or less line with 6 items. Didn't realize why I was getting a talking to or what about until I was half-way back to my place. As a result, I no longer get irritated with folks that do that at home.
# faxmachinequestion : greetings Puckish Pete and Cognoscente Chris (yes, it took me a few minutes to decide on those). As with many of your listeners, I’ll be coming to Japan for a nice 2 week holiday, in Oct. my three favorite foods are Sushi (salmon sashimi mmmmm), ramen, and okonomiyaki. That being said, you mentioned once “eating across Japan” as a way to see the country. Can you give a handful of ideal places to try that could also give me some great experiences of the country? I’m not all that interested in Tokyo for this trip (unless you have a MUST EAT HERE) suggestion, and not family mart chicken. That’s a given! Keep up the good word; sincerely: N.O.C -H ( Nobody Of Consequence).
Just came here to see if anyone acknowledged this. I love this podcast and Pete because he's a funny guy but he seriously can't go one podcast without some unwarranted leftie talking point out of the blue. I'm quite liberal but geez, even to me it always comes off so preachy and self-righteous - whether he's making statements such as "young people are not getting into relationships because Japan is full of nightmare men" or "I would be offended as a woman because the women only cars are pink!" or simply stamping out Chris' outspoken love for Top Gear because "They're so brexit". The funniest thing to me is watching Chris be uncomfortable, not entertaining his rants and trying desperately to move on.
I wouldn’t mind so much if he ever backed up his talking points with any kind of data. But he just tosses out often libelous comments - Jordan Peterson is a “Grifter”, Pewdiepie is “Neo Nazi”, moaning about “Old white Men”, “Fuckin Tories”, “Bloody Christians” etc. The irony is he genuinely thinks he is being liberal and inclusive while constantly attacking the same groups of people! Chris has more sense and a firmer grasp of reality!@@itsfine5818
Unfortunately Pete is the personification of the brainless, woke leftie. No data, no facts, no common sense are required just as long as the current limousine liberal talking points are parroted periodically, The most amusing thing is that I genuinely believe he thinks he is tolerant and inclusive, while simultaneously disparaging men, white people, conservatives, Christian’s etc - all the people you are allowed to attack with impunity if you are a woke lefty. I did e-mail the show a few times moaning about his most egregious statements but received no response. I have commented on RUclips as well, but my comments often mysteriously “disappear”😂@@itsfine5818
Even though I listen this podcast with my phone in my pocket, I that one day, ONE DAY, Chris will fix he bloody frame rate or I will have his footage reviewed by Digital Foundry for a frame rate analysis test.
His experience with the women’s only train is funny lol I’ve done this multiple times but each time I was with a woman(I never got on by myself) and nobody seemed bothered by me. There were no other men I was always the only one but being with a woman I guess shows you’re not a pervert or have ill intent so it’s surprising to me he said the women in the train cares he was there.
Living in a coastal town where the seagulls are giant mutant creatures who would as soon kill you as steal your entire pizza, I genuinely like pigeons, but seagulls well, not really a fan. Though I wouldn't wish them any suffering
Question: I only started listening to this podcast on youtube, so I have no context on who pete donaldson is, how did you two meet each other? What is the history?
The USA has Kei Cars, they're called Smartcars. They are also case-in-point of why the idea doesn't work here: they always look like they're about to be run over on the highway. There's also the Fiat 500, which might as well be a Kei Car.
The annoying thing about the women only car (apart from the fact it’s depressing they are needed) is that during rush hour they are empty while women cram themselves into all the other carriages. I think if there was a luxurious fat Scottish guy only carriage I’d love the free seats and open space during rush hour.
Australias Climate and speed limits also laugh at kei cars, i love the little things, but they only make sense here. I mean today i spent an hour on a train, to go 25kms..... in a car it would take and hour and a half, why? because the stupid speed limits sooo slow, 22kms road vs rail. no traffic... it would have almost been quicker to ride an electric bike.
Where I come from K Car kinda a thing where I come from. Even my country national car are 2nd best are K Car. I even take my driving license in one. K Car kinda king where I come from. Google King of the road of Malaysia.
Internal combustion engines are nice and all, but if I were to ever import an old car from anywhere in the world, I'd probably consider converting it to electric. It's expensive, sure, but I guess that wouldn't be a problem if I were in a position to even consider importing a car. A while back I watched some videos with people converting all sorts from old Porsches to Range Rovers, but I haven't really followed the topic so I'm not sure it's still a "thing". Stay safe if you're affected by earthquakes or tsunamis.
