With a temperature drop of around 15ºC in the space of 24 hours,, conditions were much more comfortable for the riders as they left McLaren Vale, and there were several riders who were up for the day’s early breakaway. After a neutral zone of just 500m, 7 riders launched off the front.
The 7 rider break, which included king of the mountains Nicholas Dlamini and Thomas de Gendt, reached the first ascent of Willunga Hill ahead of the peloton, with Dlamini taking further points to secure the polka-dot jersey.
However, it was all back together by the second time round. Peter Sagan fought well but was dropped with around 1.5km to go, by which time Richie Porte launched his trademark attack. Would it be enough to take the stage win and defend his Tour Down Under title?

Impey! What a Champ.. leading out Ewen on stage two and then still able to pass Sagan for 2nd! Nearly beating Sagan on stage 4 and then only finishing 8sec off Port in second place against one of the worlds best climbers. Not to mention killing himself for the team. He deserves the win! Not to mention Dlamini wining the KOM on his first big race. Two 🇿🇦 Boytjies rocking the Tour Down Under! 💪🏻🚴🚴🇿🇦🇿🇦
So happy to see Nic Dlamini killing it at his first outing in a WorldTour event, hopefully more Africans like him make their way to the pro peloton.
First official pro race, first overall king of the mountains win, congrats to neo pro Dlamini of DDD !
The most concise explanation of the countback rule that I've ever heard. Congratulations.
I've been loving these race reports. Perfect length, very comprehensive, great commentary.
Great to see Richie Porte back in form (heck, even back in one piece) after his TdF crash. And great to see Daryl Impey in ochre.
Daryl for the overall win!!
Can you make: pro clothes vs normal(cheap) clothes?
How about Egnan Bernal in the top 10 overall. An absolutely brilliant talent!
GCN- you guys missed the epic crosswind fighting that almost caught richie porte off guard on the flats before the last climb. For me it was the most exciting part of this race
Oh, was that when Rohan Denis stepped up for him? Since he mentions him specifically.
Gotta love GCN
Impey FTW! Richie is a great racer & a good man, but I'd love to see Daryl win. He's always giving himself for the team; he deserves the win.
Thomas De Gendt never takes "primes" by accident, he knew very well where the line was ;)
Now that was a great race round up! where people stood prior to the race, the course layout, the history, the battles, the winner and an interview. What happened to Sagan he lost 21/2 minutes and ended in 33rd place!. Doesn't he have any team mates who can pull him so he can be fresher for the mountain clime?
Impey for the win. Richie won’t risk it & MS boys can mop up bonuses if need be.
Thanks for this guys. Great coverage.
Presumably it's worth De Gendt riding the way he does because of the sponsors featuring at the front so much.
Awesome round-ups. Are you going to Be showing video highlights of all the races this year?
GO, GO, GO, PORTE !!!!
No mention to EF-Drapac's crosswind attack between the ascents?
i'm certain peter didn't pop, but gave up intentionally. he could of easily held on at that pace but gave up for Jay McCarthy. if you watch it... he didn't even look phased by the climb or the pace when he gave up
Sagan will take the win
Go RP!
Discussion topic: how would the race change if radios were not allowed?
Hello GCN, I recently broke one of my shimano Tiagra 4500 shifters on my trusty Trek 1200SL. And I was wondering if can upgrade my shifters without changing out my derailleurs and cassette? #TORQUEBACK
I would rather favor Porte, but i doubt that BMC came form a TTT formation type or that Porte make it in a break clear of Impey. So the latter will win GC. Its a local boy VS a local team's race now !!
What are your predictions for tomorrow's final stage?
46°C
Global Cycling Network Impey win
Impey will make it. Because as said he is the better sprinter than Porte. And breakaways will not get through tomorrow.
how can we watch live from Europe?
I don't know if they will allow it but this TV network is covering the race in Australia, good luck.

If you want to pronounce kilometre correctly, please listen to the one and only Phil Liggett
can someone explain what countback really is? and what does porte have to do on stage 6 to take the win?
Countback means they add the placings of a rider on all stages and the lower the sum is, the better. And if Porte wants to take the win, he'd have to either get a time gap on Impey (for example due to a split in the peloton at the finish) or gain some bonus seconds (there are 3, 2, 1 bonus seconds at the two intermediate sprints and 10, 6, 4 at the finish).
thx
what are their speeds? why is bike racing the only racing discipline i am aware of where race speeds are never mentioned???
Shydn Crumph analyse to your heart's content www.strava.com/activities/1365489249
thx!
Am i going mad or Daryl Impey looks just like Tony Martin?
you are too much mad ahahaahaa
The only parallel is that they both have quite big eyes. That's all.
What is Movistar doing in that sky/astana color scheme kit? it's hideous stay with green
Durian Rider will win
biggest idiot of the year
