100 percent what I want from GCN and Dan in particular. Mixing some Velon power data into the results is perfect, as a mention, not a feature ... when the hills start in the classics, dropping in what Boonen peaked at and carried on with for 2 minutes, as he surged on the Taainberg would be just the right colour for understanding the race results ... and to put mere humans into perspective. Ok, maybe not Tommeke anymore but you get it ... chapeau GCN
I like these bonus seconds in races like the tdu. For me it brings an extra bit of salt to the soup and makes the race a bit more tactical and interesting.
Excellent coverage guys. Dan, you are perfect at conveying updates to us. Keep it going. It was pretty interesting seeing Sagan helping some race staff. That tells me he is aware of whats going on around him...which might seem like a simple concept...but means a lot. As opposed to being aware of only himself.
I think bonus seconds are good for racing - keeping it more interesting & unpredictable. It makes each stage more meaningful, and keeps more riders in the mix in terms of the possibly of winning the race.
I think that Racing News is a really awesome show, mainly cause now I just have to wait 1 week to get all the news I miss with the plus of those which I didn't know about. And Dan is doing a great job with the Spanish, btw.
Would like to see Race Tatic of the week with maybe a break down of how someone won the race. Was it a team effort or a lucky break. I would like to see the how of winning not just recap results. Just a thought. Keep up the great work guys.!
I for one do not watch any racing, but that is not exclusive to cycling, I simply don't watch sport much if at all. But I do give to GCN for creating a nice highlight of the racing news for me to actually enjoy, as I don't need to see all the action but the excitement of races can be expressed by Dan nicely. Well done
Good job on the show. Obviously I'd like more video and analysis, but I understand buying access to footage is probably prohibitively expensive. It was great to catch up on the week's action nevertheless.
In shorter tours, such as the TDU, I think the bonus seconds make the race more interesting. It means that anyone can win it, from a breakaway specialist, a climber, or even a sprinter, if they can avoid losing too much time up Willunga hill. However, in the longer races, the most exciting parts are the summit finishes, where a rider can lose places based only on a few seconds. That miniscule difference in strength on the day could be completely overshadowed by 'bonus seconds'.
Nothing was said about the other point classifications at the race(KOM, young rider, sprint etc) TDU. I have to say Nicholas Dlamini showed a load of talent. He wasn't even listed in the episode of up coming neo pros to look out for !
Great show again, many thanks for this intelligent and interesting round up. (Just don't say "I personally" (04:05) or "I for one" (04:01) Dan - superfluous flourishes!)
the kbwb (royal belgian cycling union) stated to level the prize money for the comming cx wold championship, making it so that Sanne Cant could earn as much as Wout Van Aert (if both of them would win)
Big thumbs up to the SA Govt stepping in to equalise the prize money for the womens race. Also - loving the power data. Really interesting and helpful.
ZwergStein Froome was born in Kenya of British parents and grew up there and in South Africa. It is reported he considers himself to be British but that does not alter where he was born. Of course, everyone loves a winner :-)
I bet Diego Marradonna's spent more time in Britain than Chris Froome! But I'll give the lad his due, he does speak like a (well spoken) Englishman, unlike those African cricketers we adopt/steal to play for us 😋
I really appreciate the race updates. Unless you are constantly trolling the cycling news in North America we seem to be off the beaten path when it comes to up to date information regarding racing. If possible I would like hear a little more on key moments during the races and not just the winners. That might make the race report a little unwieldy, but good to hear/see nonetheless. Thanks! Keep up the great work.
Matt Wallebeck they did daily reports on tour down under as well which were more complete. I'd imagine they'll do as many races as they can like that over the year so watch out for the daily reports.
Having bonus seconds means that either a rider needs to be a better all rounder or that they will have to go all out on the climbs. A win win for everyone.
Bonus seconds are a good thing, if someone want to jump out to lead a stage for several Km, he should get the time bonus. That said, everyone who is just wheel sucking behind the leaders are getting the same time as the race leader are getting the same race time. I think that sucks. At the end of a stage everyone should get the time they crossed the finish line. This way everyone has the incentive to be the fastest. So many times I have seen a rider get the lead from a TT or super crazy mountain stage then come in 12th for the next few stages and keep the lead. Tour racing gets kind of boring to watch. Every other sport that's raced against the clock gives a more exciting finish, not a predictable out come.
I come MTB and recently got a road bike, I've been training alone for 2 months and a friend of mine that has been cycling longer than me started training in a group, alone I can maintain about 28-30km/h for 2 hours, my friend staying behind the peloton, maintains about 40+km/h. Does training Behind the peloton really improve performance when cycling alone?
Definitely a fan of bonus seconds in races. But I'd be excited to see more bonus seconds throughout the route rather than just at stage finishes. Would be a good way of breaking up the dominance of single teams or the long days where all the GC riders hide in the bunch.
Ollie Smith there are usually the sprint points during a stage give points and bonus seconds but it varies from race to race usually though it's 3 seconds for the first across then 2 & 1 for the next two.
Yeah I know they're out there but I think they deserve more emphasis. Specifically in the grand tours! Be good to see the GC boys get something more out of the days usually reserved for sprinters/breakaways
I do think that bonus seconds should count in pro racing. Otherwise, the GC contenders can just lean back and be towed to the finish line by their teammates. However, with bonus seconds, no one can be too sure, thus making the races more interesting for the spectators
The race should be won by the person covering the distance in the fastest time, however: someone who always ends up in the front of the peloton DOES cover the distance faster than someone who hangs around in the back of it. Therefore, GC times should be measured individually, not in groups, i.e. riders should not be given the same as the first rider of the group they finish in. This would also get rid of the ever returning question "Was this a gap or was this still the same group?"
I believe bonus seconds degrade from what is otherwise a race. Giving bonus seconds is like giving out participation points. A race should be deemed solely by who gets to the end first.
yes, sagan is decent, not bad at all, but ... I see the video and still not impresed, really just saying. About la vuelta de san juan, seems quickstep will send a message for the future of 2018 seasson from argentina and even from down under, stating the 4 horseman (gaviria, viviani, hodeg, richeze) are comming to smash and over power all competition as they can. @gcn doyou think quick step have a stronger team of sprinters above all team in the pro tour?
And here we see Dan modeling the new brown variant of the Giro Synthe. Interesting color choice and ... nope wait... yes? Ok... ok. Alright... I do believe it's just a haircut
Time to get some 'contaminated' gel capsules and make my own PEDS; good enough for TourDownUnder win, good enough for the rest of us. Doping and cycling, it's a never ending story.
Nothing on "La tropicale Amissa Bongo" and the amzing victories from Areruya, first african rider winner while riding in a non pro team????? And the failure of WillierTrestina, BIke Aid and (less but still) Direct Energie.
In the interests of equality, the women - who are now paid the same - should have the same cycling distance and number of days.. Also, we need to look at the TV ratings and see which event garners the greatest audience since prize money is a direct reflection of the sports popularity. Controversial comments I agree, but, it's not equality if two people (male or female) are paid the same and one does less work.
I agree that they should have the same distances and days but not for the reasons you gave. I think the fault in your chain of logic was the assumption in the subtext that women don't want to ride the same days which, to the best of my knowledge, is wrong. I think, that women want to ride the same amount but can't because the race organizers don't have the financial will to host 2 long events. Which leads us back to the the root problem: Womens cycling isn't watched as much because it isn't covered by the media as much because people don't watch it. I think it is unlikely for there to be any change as it would involve one group (the media or the viewership) to take drastic action and that's not going to happen because it is just easier to stick to the status quo.
Sprinters often do a hell of a lot less work than domestiques, but earn a hell of a lot more money. So that shows your point to be irrelevant. Or to look at other sports, should Usain Bolt earn a lot less than Mo Farah - after all, his race is over in 10 seconds, rather than 29 minutes.
Bonus seconds are ridiculous and a gimmick which isn't needed. It can lead to the absurd situation where the rider with the fastest time over the course of a stage race, doesn't win it! Utter nonsense.
This is an awesome feature for us here in the US who don’t get a lot of cycling coverage. Love the race recaps
Pete Doyle I agree. You'd think football, basketball and baseball were the only sports here.
JillyBean860 I know. Football anymore with all these rules might as well be 2 hand touch.
This show is a keeper. Always good to see. Keep at it.
sweet, I'm really loving the Velon power numbers and more detailed break down.
Nailed it, great show loved the power data can we have more of that sort of thing.
Ian Nick Tarry yes, please, love to see what these guys can do, even though it proves I am a very mere mortal! 😂
Would have been nice to see some of Dlamini's power. He annihilated those climbs.
Ok, maybe not Tommeke anymore but you get it ... chapeau GCN
Love the new show! Definitely love the power data and details; would love to see more of that. Keep up the great job!
Cheers SC!
Terrific information and racing summary. Well presented and edited. Easy and enjoyable to watch. Thank you and keep it going.
James Royds Thanks James.
This is a great recap of the weeks going on..
Great job covering the racing.
Well done Dan. You have found your metier. #yourmetier
Looking forward to the Mallorca race news. Headed there this weekend!
GCN I think you have dialed it in perfectly, love the race show, a must watch every Monday.
Cheers Ben!
Really like the race recaps. Good way to keep up with what's happening without spending hours reading. Keep it going!!
Loving the racing news wrap. Keep it up.
I like these bonus seconds in races like the tdu. For me it brings an extra bit of salt to the soup and makes the race a bit more tactical and interesting.
Super good, Dan, great work. Impressive flow and information.
I love this show. I got into cycling by watching pro races on tv. This makes it easier to stay updated
great show! nice to hear about not so popular races!
Crohns Man A cynic would say that, given the video was uploaded to his own social media, it's a case of being self-aware!
GOOT point.
wow from road, cyclocross to track. nice coverage GCN
Love the show! Great variety and good bits of info. Keep it up!
Thanks GCN love this new racing news video. Perfect to hear what's been happening in the racing scene!
Mega stoked for Impey on his win at TDU but of course his teammates are gonna give him props!!
This show was created solely for Dan to trial new hairstyles.
Michael McDermott What's your favourite so far?
Daniel Lloyd The wig.
Which wig?
Daniel Lloyd The one you wore after the charity headshave. I was joking, obviously.
Hair has been on point of late.
Yeah, I thought something was missing this week. It was 5cm of Dan's hair height. This one looks better.
Love this show, keep it up GCN!!!
I think bonus seconds are good for racing - keeping it more interesting & unpredictable. It makes each stage more meaningful, and keeps more riders in the mix in terms of the possibly of winning the race.
Great show, great hair!
I think that Racing News is a really awesome show, mainly cause now I just have to wait 1 week to get all the news I miss with the plus of those which I didn't know about. And Dan is doing a great job with the Spanish, btw.
Bravo 👏🏻 to the new show. I like all things GCN, but this has quickly become my favorite. I can’t wait till the racing season ramps up.
Exciting isn't it! Thanks :)
That Hair though
Love the show! Keep up all of the good work
Love the Show!
dans hair looks like he faced a pretty strong headwind on the way to work
When you ride fast enough, you are always heading into the wind.
Enjoying the show!
Would like to see Race Tatic of the week with maybe a break down of how someone won the race. Was it a team effort or a lucky break. I would like to see the how of winning not just recap results. Just a thought. Keep up the great work guys.!
Travis B Exactly this!
Finally all the news I must know within the timeframe of only 10 minutes!
Woah. Slick back hair. Looking hip Dan
Well done
Love the racing news show. Nice addition. Dan’s great but can you let him breath - I’m exhausted after watching it. Feel like I’ve done intervals!
Superb, love the new show.
"Wet though" 😂😂😂😂 Dan your an awesome commentator
Love the new show !
Good job on the show. Obviously I'd like more video and analysis, but I understand buying access to footage is probably prohibitively expensive. It was great to catch up on the week's action nevertheless.
In shorter tours, such as the TDU, I think the bonus seconds make the race more interesting. However, in the longer races, the most exciting parts are the summit finishes, where a rider can lose places based only on a few seconds. That miniscule difference in strength on the day could be completely overshadowed by 'bonus seconds'.
Wish we could see more of the races, the recaps aren't long enough!
We've got highlights from every stage of the Tour Down Under up for you Rampas :)
I think bonus seconds are a great way to ensure racing has chance against racing strategy, bringing balance and more interest
Nothing was said about the other point classifications at the race(KOM, young rider, sprint etc) TDU.
I have to say Nicholas Dlamini showed a load of talent. He wasn't even listed in the episode of up coming neo pros to look out for !
Bonus seconds can be difficult to balance out, but I think they make for a more interesting race to watch in the days of power meters.
Great show again, many thanks for this intelligent and interesting round up. (Just don't say "I personally" (04:05) or "I for one" (04:01) Dan - superfluous flourishes!)
Congrats Aussies for paying the women!
Julie Walls what a milestone created by the South Australian government.
Absolutely!
Yes bonus seconds should be used for short stage races to a week long but I don't know about the Grand Tours.
Great show
the kbwb (royal belgian cycling union) stated to level the prize money for the comming cx wold championship, making it so that Sanne Cant could earn as much as Wout Van Aert (if both of them would win)
I was always against bonus seconds, but with teams starting to dominate with Power Meters (no bad thing) it keeps it exciting.
TDU, no mention of Nic Dlamini and this Neo pro won the KOM and was in the breakaway on 4 days pretty fine effort don’t you think a short mention
Great video guys
Big thumbs up to the SA Govt stepping in to equalise the prize money for the womens race.
Also - loving the power data. Really interesting and helpful.
Such awesome news eh!
I believe you'll find Chris Froome is Africa's first winner of a world tour GC competition
I am mightily underinformed but isn't Froome racing as a British national even though he was born in Nigeria?
ZwergStein Froome was born in Kenya of British parents and grew up there and in South Africa. It is reported he considers himself to be British but that does not alter where he was born. Of course, everyone loves a winner :-)
ok, I told you that my facts where shakey at best.
I think he started racing on a British license around the same time he was with Barloworld.
I bet Diego Marradonna's spent more time in Britain than Chris Froome! But I'll give the lad his due, he does speak like a (well spoken) Englishman, unlike those African cricketers we adopt/steal to play for us 😋
All good to keep the bonus points, but would be nice to have a record of real times as well to compare matters.
Makes sense, I try not to drown myself in RUclips viewing, so I definitely missed those.
Well pronounced "San Juan". Kudos.
@Global Cycling Network Good show as always!
Oh My Froomey! Dan's hair in today's show is so cool! Looks like the strong headwind styled Dan's hair!
Having bonus seconds means that either a rider needs to be a better all rounder or that they will have to go all out on the climbs. A win win for everyone.
Pacing and presentation much better this week. Not as fast or frantic as first two weeks. Easier to follow. Show is developing nicely.
Thanks Roy!
Bonus seconds are a good thing, if someone want to jump out to lead a stage for several Km, he should get the time bonus. Soooo any news about Froome's puffer?
I come MTB and recently got a road bike, I've been training alone for 2 months and a friend of mine that has been cycling longer than me started training in a group, alone I can maintain about 28-30km/h for 2 hours, my friend staying behind the peloton, maintains about 40+km/h. Dans hair starting to look like the Peaky Blinders, great race news show!
Nice “doo” Dan.
Nice hair man!
Definitely a fan of bonus seconds in races. But I'd be excited to see more bonus seconds throughout the route rather than just at stage finishes. Would be a good way of breaking up the dominance of single teams or the long days where all the GC riders hide in the bunch.

Overall winner and climbers jersey in tour down under both South African

75th and great vid lads

then the group gets the same time rule also "degrades" the purity of a win.
Greipel👏,comten👏,vdpoel.van Aert 👏pat from Belgium 🚲
VAN AERT WAS IN GREECE AND I MISSED IT?????
Glad to be early 💛
yes, sagan is decent, not bad at all, but ... I see the video and still not impresed, really just saying.

Kay-rin, Dan. KAY-RIN. LIKE ARE YOU OKAY, RING ME. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
What about Nicholas Dlamini????????? No mention?
I'm not against salary equality on Tour Down Under, but same thing was on Tour de Pologne 2016. In 2017 there were no women race at all.
And here we see Dan modeling the new brown variant of the Giro Synthe. Interesting color choice and ... nope wait... yes? Ok... ok. Alright... I do believe it's just a haircut
Dan looking like Arthur from Peaky Blinders
GCN Racing News T Shirts???
Time to get some 'contaminated' gel capsules and make my own PEDS; good enough for TourDownUnder win, good enough for the rest of us. Doping and cycling, it's a never ending story.
From the overhead shots Viviani looked the fastest, he was just positioned badly, otherwise I think he would have had more wins than he did!
Nothing on "La tropicale Amissa Bongo" and the amzing victories from Areruya, first african rider winner while riding in a non pro team????? And the failure of WillierTrestina, BIke Aid and (less but still) Direct Energie.
What a hair!
Impey may be a great guy, or he may not, but 3 tweets from his team mates don't prove what "the peloton" thinks about him.
Not to nit-pick (but actually, yes, to nit-pick) keirin is pronounced KAY-rin
In the interests of equality, the women - who are now paid the same - should have the same cycling distance and number of days..

ARK INHK well said!
ARK INHK, 👏 👏 👏
It's so simple but 'libtards' overcomplicate practically everything to aline it with their agenda.
First!
Bonus seconds are ridiculous and a gimmick which isn't needed. It can lead to the absurd situation where the rider with the fastest time over the course of a stage race, doesn't win it! Utter nonsense.
Isn't froome from Africa?...
I am not a fan of bonus seconds.
Love the new show👍
