It wasn’t exactly countries competing against each other. In the final, it felt more like Alpecin-Deceuninck with van der Poel, Hermans, and Vermeersch against individual riders who didn’t really have any teammates. To race in the elite category, you needed UCI points, gravel racing is still a relatively new discipline, so in the future, maybe we’ll see a pro peloton with select riders from each country, similar to road racing so that it is countries vs countries instead of teams vs teams which in my opinion would make for better racing.
They have some differences from traditional road bikes because they need to be ready for much tougher terrain. The tires are more similar to traditional MTB tires than road tires. They’re not exactly the same, but they’re close. They have knobs for better grip and are wider and more durable.

Teams would make it much less entertaining to watch, I hope it doesn't go the way of road cycling, but it stays as an individual sport as it is now.
