  • NYC has no shortage of video game stores but it also has a Book Off. These shops are quite popular in Japan and super cool they have one just a few blocks away from the Nintendo NY store. Here's what it looks like on the inside and what we found. TONS of games, books, anime, figures, DVDs and a lot more.

Book-Off used to have great prices, but for years now they routinely ask well over market value for games. LONG gone are the days when I could find something like Metal Warriors there for $3.

They're in the heart of Manhattan where rent is higher than the skyscrapers. It's to be expected.

  • @MrCoffeeMrRadar

Book off use to be the place to score some games at below market value. But last couple years they have really jacked up the prices. One of the people I knew there told me they had management changes so now when they get games they have only people experienced in gaming look up prices on price charting. But then again everything in Manhattan has gone way up.

@@JohnRiggs retro collecting in NYC is tough these days. You either have t o drive all the way out to LI or pay the extreme higher prices on Manhattan. It's a real shame because back in the day Main Street Flushing was king for gaming. Arcades and tons of mom & pop shops everywhere uptill around PS1/Dreamcast/GameCube era.

Book-Off was one of my “go-to” places back when I worked in Manhattan many years ago pre-pandemic era. I’d say the BEST finds I had was a white Japanese PS2 slim for $59 & a loose SFC cart of “Pop-n-Twinbee” for only $5 bucks.
I agree prices have gone up & they “slip” far less now but it’s still a fun place to visit from time to time.

Prices at Bookoff typically at market or above with the occasional deals and steals when under priced. I live near the San Diego Bookoff in Socal and I have visited the other 5 Bookoffs in Orange County and LA - the love the ability to physically see and browse thru the games especially the imports. Temper your expectations and you'll find a hidden gem here and there.
I've had my share of steals as recent as this week - I bought a n64 expansion pak priced at $3.99 :) typically goes for $50 or seeing GC Super Smash Bro Melee horribly overpriced at $109 - prices are all over the place.
Protip: if you see multiple copies of the same game with different prices - check the Date below the price usually say A09/17/2022 the date will indicate when Bookoff got the market price for that item.
Example: I saw a copy of 3D Dot Hero for PS3 - one dated 09/01/2022 priced at $69.99 and another copy priced earlier in the year 03/15/2022 priced at $39.99 - same game $30 difference.

Did they have Intellivision, Colecovision, 5200, 7800, Bally Astrocade, Odyssey 2, Dreamcast, Turbo Grafx, Neo Geo, 3DO, Jaguar, Lynx, cd-i, Xavix,
It's amazing, you can find an Arcadia game but not a Dreamcast game.

Those hard off stickers show how much they over priced the import games. Good chunk of the cheaper games probably came from hard offs junk section looking at the condition so they were the games they couldn't sell in Japan. Can shop ebay for much better deals on most of the imports

Theirs a guy at my local flea market that constantly goes to GameStop and bestbuy when they do the ps5 drops, he usually ends up getting 4-6 ps5s then he sells them for 1000 or he does a raffle. The raffles he makes 1500 per ps5 it’s insane

I think it's funny that they went with the name Book Off for the US because here in Japan, Book Off usually sells just movies, CDs and books. A sister company called Hard Off is the one that sells electronics which includes video games and video game systems. I guess they went with Book Off instead of Hard Off for the USA because of the unfortunate naming similarity to an erection. (Or lack thereof!)
