Me with a lot of papers due for school: Uh huh, yup. Let’s learn how to sew Fr tho, you, Micarah, and all the other seamstress/ sewing RUclipsrs are so cool! Wish I had the talent (and patience) to be able to make clothes
That’s amazing how a little curiosity and determination can turn into a booming career in less than 2 years. 👀 and you’re just getting started. Your content is so inspiring.
I've always wanted to start sewing, but when I found out YOU were self-taught, I ran to this video to learn how you started out! I love your content and the dresses you make
Another Tip: Don't begin with stretch-fabrics until you know the basics with non-stretch fabric. Sewing stretch is a whole different skill. You'll need different needles, different ways of finishing to make it nice looking (with twin-needles, or knitted ribbon), different stitches instead of straight, or using a serger to sew directly etc.
It’s amazing that artistic people seem to excel at anything they do! Anytime I try something creative, I find it effortless to learn! Good job! I started knitting last year, a few months in, I started crocheting, and now I’m ready to start sewing this year!
I learned how to sew when I was 8 years old. Well, Handsewing to be exact for years I sewed by hand and as a cosplayer, it took me a full year to make my cosplays ( ages 15 to 18 ). Finally when I graduated high school one of my Graduation party guests ( my family friend ) bought me my first sewing machine for my graduation. So I have been sewing for about 12 to 13 years. So most of my life I've been sewing.
As a complete beginner (I haven't even started yet, I'm just checking out RUclips videos), I think this video is an EXCELLENT tour! You can give yourself more credit about your teaching abilities: your communication is perfectly clear and informative, I have no doubt you can make actual tutorials if you want to. I'd love to watch them too.
The main problem I have is money, otherwise I would make all the giant ballgowns lol. This is very helpful though, I kinda struggle a lot with making things I’m happy with and it’s always nice to have someone to help out so thank you!🙃
Fabric can be expensive yes! But (dependant on country) there are thrift/charity shops that sell low price old fabric. Old curtains can be really good for fabric and bed sheets/duvet covers. As for sewing machines you don’t need the most new sewing machine when your getting started( I started with a 30 year old machine of my mothers) You don’t need a serger/over locker to begin as stated in the video. I recommend starting in easy things like simple skirts, shorts, etc Also you can find classes to begin sewing and usually you don’t need your own machine for this and fabric for these courses are in the price. Lastly it’s all about the fun! You can use old clothes for small projects and make do with what you have (sometimes family members/friends have sewing things you can use) Hope this helped!!
Thrift stores are a great resource for inexpensive fabric & notions. Just last week I paid $1 for a sweater, I bought it for the 16 beautiful buttons on it. Great deal
2 things: 1.) Shein is your best friend for supplies, i bought a pair of bomb sheers for $5-$6 and so much more for dirt cheap 2.) Zig-zag stitch is generally used to seal frayed ends, if your sewing machine is anything like hers or mine you might want to try 16
Keep in mind that circle skirts are usually cut on the bias of the fabric (diagonal), which means that over time, the hem of the skirt will stretch and droop. Just something to think of-paneled/gored skirts can take more time and fabric, but the value of being cut on the proper grain is helpful!
60 years ago I learned to sew on my mother’s sewing machine. You name it, I’ve sewn it and I do a pretty good job. YOU however are unbelievably talented! Keep up the great work, more young (& not so young) people need to learn to sew 😄
I am following you since beginning I was always very interested in sewing but never tried. And I saw what you can do I saw that you made better everyday and I thought maybe I can do it. My family surprised me by buying me a sewing machine last Christmas and since that day I am sewing everyday !
This video is the most clear and beginner friendly one I've found so far. I'm so glad you demonstrated how to thread the machine because it looked so tricky but your explanation was spot on
Thank you so much for sharing this. It's very inspiring. I myself have just started sewing this year in 2022 back in February. My inspiration for starting to sew was my granddaughter starting to do pageants and I wanted to help out with dresses and costumes and also just sewing outfits that she can wear everyday. She loves to wear dresses and I have made her so many cute outfits teaching myself to sew using RUclips videos just like you did
Omg!! So that is why you are so good at making clothes!😯😯😯 I'm a new subscriber and I saw your Genevive's ballet dress video and I was so surprised! I saw that you never get lazy and you always try to make the best clothes for your subscribers and viewers to see! I love your vids!😍😍
Thank you for this video! My friend lent me her sewing machine, which happens to be the same one you demonstrated in this video. Been hesitant on using it, but after watching I’m definitely going to start making stuff. Starting off with simple stuff such as a scrunchies then move into making my own clothing. ❤ You did a great job teaching. Keep it up! 👏🏻🫶🏼
I come from a long line of seamstresses. Mennonites actually. My grandma was the 1st to do it professionally and use an electric swing machine. My mom can sew, but doesn't. I got frustrated with it as a child. But, three days ago, I had the urge to make my daughter a high waisted circle skirt. I took her to pick fabric.... then came home and at 47 years old learned I can design a little, and I can sew. Who knew.
For people on a low budget i really recommend getting your sewing machine on marketplace , etc. I paid mine 110cad and it's a Singer. For the fabrics , thrift store are fuulll of gems!
I loved and enjoyed every bit of this video 📸. Now I know that my thought process of getting a sewing machine and starting sewing is not out of place. With love from Nigeria 🇳🇬🇳🇬
You are so sweet and soooo helpful!!!! Great tutorial, and I completely disagree with you… you are an EXCELLENT teacher. Very talented, all your stuff is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing with the world! People like me really appreciate it.
I just bought my first sewing machine this month and I ended up getting the Brother XR 9550....largely because Amazon allowed me to pay it off in monthly payments which is super convenient. I'm not sure ill ever get to the point where I'm sewing cloths but I do think this sewing machine is something i can grow into as i learn to sew. I'm in my late 50s but it's never too late to learn new things and develop a new skill.
I think it's so cool that you are self taught 👏! I've been wanting to learn how to sew but not for myself, I actually want to sew Barbie clothes 😆 So I bought a used old Barbie sewing machine and even a book with patterns for Barbies but I've yet to start but hopefully I will soon since your videos have inspired me to get started 👍
to be honest even through I have been sewing for a bit I'm still pretty much a beginner. I'm more of a visual/hands on learner so it would be cool to see what more barbie dresses you can do. I've personally tried to do Erika from the princess and the pauper (the skirt I was fine with but the bodice was horrific). But yeah can't wait to see more!
I found you just recently.. I’m addicted lol I stayed up till 3 in the morning watching all your videos!! 😂❤😂 it would be a dream to sew a princess dress!
Lovely video! You are so bright and cheerful you make me want to jump up and go and sew something. Do you play the violin and the piano? I noticed lots of violins on the wall behind you and a piano to the side. Looks like you have a music room. Are you moving out of your parents home into your own place or are all of you moving into a different house?? Keep sewing for someone who is self taught and who hasn't really sewn that many years you do a fantastic, professional looking job on all of your projects!
I don't know if anyone will see this but what should I start out making?? Like what is the easiest way to go? A skirt, dress, shirt, etc. I may mess up a few times but I will try until I get it because I really want to become a fashion designer. Maybe one day have my own brand, honestly i don't know yet.
Learn how to make patterns from scratch.... You shoukd start with a dress because from a dress pattern you automatically have a skirt. That's what I'm doing at the moment. It's good to start from basics as you can easily build from there.
OMG!!!😱 You gone make Harper' pencil dress😁😁 I cant wait! When I was growing up with disney channel I was upsesed with Harper's outfits, they are amazing!!!
Hi! Thank you so much for your patience 💖! It was a really useful video! Can you teach us how to make corsets and big skirts plz? I will be amazing :3!
“I keep my sewing machine in this corner because there is nowhere else to keep it” 😆 That’s a very valid reason. Relatable as someone who lives in a NYC apartment 😅
14:41 I was looking at all your stitch options with my jaw dropped. THERE ARE SO MANY??? HOW DOES A MACHINE EVEN DO SOME OF THOSE??? Mine is older, so it only has 14 not including buttons. Also this video made me realize that YES I need to put down the presser foot. Mine doesn’t make me do it when sewing so I got confused. This video made me so much more confident though!!
I loved you. I am 17 years old and I love old Barbie movies and you resemble my facial features. I wanted to learn how to sew because I love fashion models and my mother has a machine and she used to sew beautiful dresses and I enjoy watching you very much❤.
I am thinking of making a Princess Merda🏹❤ dress for my little sister, who has red and curly hair, because its quality on Amazon and other sites is poor.
Thank you! I’ve beeing wanting to start sewing for a long while now and you inspired me to finally take that step 😍 can’t wait to get my first sewing machine!
Not gonna lie the massive closet calmed me, I was panicking when I saw your three little shelves in the corner and was wondering what was wrong with me...
I suggest you make a cosplay from ryu to sobakasu no hime(maybe white dress🤔) because you might like this one if you watch it. It has a Disney style, good music, and beautiful outfits but I don't force you.😅 will continue to follow 🤗

You can save on money and do only one gown first that you like the most. You'll enjoy it.
I hope you get the opportunity soon.
Best wishes.
I did cosplay and it does add up BUT I do more of a disney-bound style so I can still wear the clothes in regular life lol

Sometimes if i want cheap fabric i just buy a really big skirt that has a cute pattern second hand. And then make something cute from that.
