- BMW's 2-Series has been redesigned for 2022, no, not the FWD 2-Series, the RWD 2-Series. Confused? BMW makes two totally unrelated vehicles that start with the same number. The 4-door 2 is the one that sells better, the 2-door 2 is the one that drives better...

Rear indicators are red in North America but are amber in Europe and other markets by law. Not sure why European brands don't just supply amber indicators for NA too. Safer and clearer for other drivers.
It really grinds my gears. It also grinds the gears of the guy over at Technology Connections.
Yes, makes no sense and is one of my pet peeves.
The reality is that this is what most people will end up buying. This video deserves far more view the all of those 240i videos.
Driving a new BMW is exhilarating repairing one is wallet emptying
Not for the first 4 years / 50k miles
@@jamesinsteamboat Or off lease
Only if the owner lags in scheduled maintenance. Same for every other cat, too.
That's what a warranty & routine scheduled maintenance is for
Face it, how many people follow up with maintenance especially after the warranty period
I like what we find here, especially the smaller grille relative to the 3/4 series.
The grill looks fine, but those "fang-like" air intakes (not sure how else to describe them) look ridiculous. The latest Audi S5 features a similar disastrous front end. I cant wait until the industry outgrows this zeitgeist.
Looks like a BeamNG version of the previous gen 2 series.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Agreed! 😂
Yes 😂
As a longtime BMW buyer, they're going to run out of numbers soon if they keep increasing the size and weight of these cars. The 2 series now is bigger than the 3 series of years past. At some point people will want to go back to the small nimble cars.
Have you seen ppl bust and weight lines?
just get a z4 then, the backseat is useless anyways. they grow to accomodate bigger tires and more radiators. if they were inappropriately sized, show me the excess space.
true, everything happens in cycles. There comes a time when nimble cars take over current trend of SUVs & cross overs.
Idk. Look how uncomfortable Alex looks in the back seat. Small cars just seem so impractical.
Are you living under a rock? Trucks, suvs, and crossovers are the vehicle of choice and its not even close. The market for a smaller car is next to zero, people want vehicles that can do it all. Carve the canyons and be a family hauler.
They need to ditch that idea and make cheaper specialized sports vehicles. Go full sports/race spec to put the money where it matters and get rid of the ambiguity of a hybrid between the 2 uses
Loving the purple, it was not available on my '21 330e, but I did get the sunset orange metallic, which also pops
For those who find simple, elegant designs that aren't over-styled with creases and bulges slapped here, there, and everywhere, the 2 series (true) coupe is a masterpiece. Internet fanboys who can't afford either version will immediately ignore the four banger but for those who remember the 2002 series BMW that gave birth to the concept of a sports sedan will understand what the 230i is all about.
Yep, test drove a 230i today, fantastic car!
I just got one and it’s a really great car and just the right size unless you need more cargo space or have family space requirements!
Great review! I have the 230i which cost about $40k. Great buy and tons of fun as a daily and on twisting roads.
Really happy all cars are growing at the same rate as my belly.
Red is not usually my thing, but that car is quite beautiful in red. Thanks for the review!
Beautiful new BMW 2 Series.
I don't understand how they made it bigger AND used the g20 platform of the 3 series yet it has less legroom than the outgoing model? Nope.
wheelbase is only 2741mm wheras g20 is 2851mm
"Why didn't you get a bigger car?" Was the takeaway for me.
Love that purple color on the M240i. More cars need to have a nice purple color option.
you can get that purple on a 230i too I believe
Boy am I glad I bought the previous gen M240i.
Because you can't afford this 1.
The G42 only includes the 48v mild hybrid system in the European 220d. The lack of purple cables near the back of the inlet manifold is a good way to make that distinction. The tach in comfort mode would also display a "power level" from 0-10 if it were a mild hybrid.
The 2021 is definitely better looking
2:25 That rear end......Ooh-Fa!
It looks like its head and tail lights shrunk. Looks like a cheap car
Alex, when are full reviews making their return to this channel? Way too many of these first drives lately.
When the embargoes lift. People want content on new releases immediately but reviewers aren't allowed to share full details. He wouldn't be able to share a full review until the date it'll ultimately be uploaded anyway.
Like to see more reviews on the 2.0 4 cylinders model.
Oh god, the colour doesn't work for me at all...
The 'thundernight metallic' purple launch colour looks awesome though
No manual?.... grrr...I've owned 4 2002's.... this is kinda cool.
Hello Sir, love the channel. I ordered the M240i , Brooklyn Grey, Loaded with the Performance pack. Your revised helped the decision. Great review.
wow! im liking this a lot!
I don’t think the previous looks cartoonish as he said ..I luv my M228i 16’ .. but I’d also buy this one .
Finally, BMW made a beautiful car again...it's been a minute.
This car is ugly as hell -- by far the worst in their entire line up. Plus it looks cheap.
Just a minute?
How come you never did a full review on the m240? I would love to see one! How’s the perfect time with the 2023 adding iDrive 8.
I was liking it until I saw the rear. It looks cheap and cartoonish like they were on a budget and had to cut costs down by giving you half a taillight.
Understand strict 4 seater observation, but fyi & ftr, 5 of us + luggage return tripped Ottawa-Myrtle Beach in E9.
Like the grill on this much better than the beaver teeth. I prefer the analog gauges, because I do not like the look of their digital dash gauges. Manufactures seem to think that any kind of digital dash will do, and most end up looking video game like.
Damn! You just made me a fan.
Jeez. Definitely better than the Toyota Supra. Likely slightly slower but no more fake vents, usable back seats, and better interior and a real BMW. Can't wait to get ahold of a 230i M sport! I'm so excited.
I love this redesign, spot on!
Sad there is no convertible, but I understand the business case just is not there. The current M240i is an outstanding vehicle, even more so when you consider how old is the design. Overall I think this looks great.
Are you in the market for a compact 2 door convertible?
If not, why bring it up?
@@genesisg7022 Is there a compact 2 door convertible?
Even Miata is a roadster.
Since 1989.
Great review! Not surprised that you preferred the 4pot to the hallowed straight 6. In the last generation I had the same reaction. The smaller engine just made it feel lighter in its feet.
Some of us prefer sounds & torque, 4 is good for X1 (I assume), not for GT.
Would you trade a 230i coupe for new 2023 Mach 1? They are both coupes but one is more refined good looking but not much sound and less power. The Mach1 is louder with more power. Mach 1 is $63 and 230is $40k.
The 4 series also has McPherson suspension at the front.
Alex, love your videos, but sound quality could be better. maybe it-s my Bose speakers, but i doubt it. all else, excellent, down to earth reviews !
Nothing gets better by removing the third pedal.
Except acceleration (in most cases)
No manual transmission available anymore?
Yea, that sucks big time.
the outside of the car design doesn't really match the inside design (like the old interior with a drastic exterior change)
I wasn’t a fan of the new 2-Series coupe’s looks at first, but it’s growing on me. The exterior looks “angrier” maybe, or just more serious. The interior looks exactly like the 3- and 4-Series, which is fine. I only wish the 230i was still offered with a manual transmission. Most of can’t afford M cars, so the loss of a manual in BMW’s less expensive cars, including the 3-Series, is really disappointing.
Your reviews are awesome, but I’d really appreciate it if you stated the numeric dimensions of the vehicle like you used to do in your older review.
Google, his reviews are already information filled.
As Alex said, this was an abbreviated review--not filmed on his home/local testing circuit.
@@kenc2257 That’s fair, but I meant my comment in more of a general sense about all of his reviews not just this particular one. He used to do it in his older vids and I found it to be one of the more useful portions of his vids because very few other reviewers mention dimensions.
In case it wasn't mentioned, it has a 40/20/40-split rear seat.
🤷♂️😉
With a fold down center arm rest. Try to find that on a 3 or 4 series that is not a Grand Coupé.
Why does it have to get bigger? My f30 feels huge and I can't wait for the market to settle down so I can get a 2 series
Great review. As someone that is just under 6’2”, would I have enough headroom in this car?
6,5 and fit
Lucky bastard
this just killed that new Integra.
Civic.
Looks E46 dimensions, that’s a good thing.
Like M340i is E39, but both with more bhp.
Looks much better than the ones with new beaver nosed grills..
wait no big grille? is this a dream come true?
I would prefer a 4door GranCoupe version of this over the FWD-based model they currently offer.
That's new 4er GC, i4 if you want BEV.
Do you guys think BMW will use this purple color on other models?
At first I didn't like this 2gen i have a 228i, but it's really starting to grow on me
interesting the x2 m35i's are getting 301 hp and 0-60 times out of a 2.0 letter. 87 more hp only improve the 0-50 time by about .5 secs? Yeah, the extra torque would be fun, but... at what cost?
After endless problems with my 2018 M240i, especially the insulting dealer support that was illegally charging me for under warranty repairs, I am done with BMW for good. Not worth the stress and frustration.
Like your comment.
That looks like I designed it..
.. at five years old ..
.. while drunk ..
.. with my feet .....
That's ur comment...
I bought today! i love it! only something make me confused. if I paid extra 6K i can jump 4 series. so what do you things guy? I mean of course if my budget was good i can go with 4 series but i think 6K not big difference.
The previous 2-Series, especially in the M2 and higher performance versions, were the best looking cars (and the best in general) in BMW's lineup. This just doesn't look anywhere near as attractive.
The length of the hood is a bit awkward-looking.
ali ipak bolje nego trojka i dalje
@@cpl8168 The length of the hood is turbo I6, form follows function, BMW have been long hood short deck since 1938 328, big kidneys then as well.
Hopefully it’s just an awkward transition
@@unowen-nh9ov that's a hell of a... stretch
great looking
I wish they made a 4 door version of this car and not whatever 4 door 2 series we have now which is basically a Mini in a BMW suit.
FFS just buy the 3 then.
test drove the car today I noticed the door handle made it difficult to open the door right away
That said hopefully I'm getting one in the next week or so. One of the best driving cars I've ever driven
Did you get it? I test drove a 230i today and loved it.
Beautiful car. I’m a sucker for a red sports car. BMW doesn’t offer red very often.
This thing is hideous
I’m really not sure how some other commenters are saying this is an improved look.
Agree -- no clue what BMW is thinking here. Looks hideous. And cheap.
2:24 what's wrong with that left tail light? didn't think bmws could do that...
With the handle, use your whole index finger kinda like a straight thumbs up in one smooth motion. It’s meant to be opened bougie.
Those rear tail lights are already looking dated, need to be sleeker less bulbous. Probably get the Toyota /bmw Supra 4 cyl .
No doubt the 2 RWD is a great car. However, it's a fortune to lease because Americans don't buy coupes. The residual value is very low. I priced it and it was more than a 3 and the 228xi. It's a much better car to purchase outright.
Bigger...yes. Better..not so much. The addition of LSD to the 240i is a plus. Lack of a manual transmission is a big negative. HP gain is offset by weight gain. Electric parking break and sun roof shade...really? Exterior styling changes are nothing significant and a matter of taste. Would not trade my f22 (manual with LSD) for the new version.
Probably my next BMW, 230i will be perfect for everyday use. M2 Competition manual on weekends.
I thought no mild-hybrid system for the m240i.
Just hate how big this is now. The 2 needed to get smaller, not larger!
I'm not sure what got bigger, but waiting time to get a car have got more ridiculous I went with competitors.
Are we really sure about not getting a stick shift on the 2? Are we all ok with that?
The last gen 2 series looks way better than this soapbox.
I had the last gen, much better looking 😍
I disagree. This one looks sleeker and leaner.
@@user-jq1kq9hy1t Enough to know actual owners & drivers don't buy 400 bhp. awd. turbo I6 unicorn compact GT coupe for "appearance".
Wish they offered a manual still...
I'm glad they kept the rear drive 2 series in the line up. As a former long term BMW owner and lessee, the base prices are a bit meaningless. For example lumbar support is usually an option in a seat package above the base car. So, base prices are not "real," because you cant find these in a dealership. Ad $10 K for built in options and that gets you close.
You can order online & not even deal with a dealer.
I just bought a base 230i right off showroom floor for $39k. Tons of fun and priced great. No lumbar support, no heads up display, no wireless charging; but still a great car! (Nice price too)
In my base - No garage door opener too!
A used 230i is the reason not to buy a Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86. Also, the 230i is the reason not to buy a new GTI unless you really need the rear cargo room. If I only had two kids, I would buy one as soon as they are out of car seats.
The side and rear are not doing it for me and I have always loved this model. The door handles and doors are giving me a bad taste. Never thought I would say a Jetta GLI looks better than a BMW.
This would be only beamer that I would buy.
Good point about the door handle. While it is a small detail, those door handles tend to pinch you. You will get snagged occasionally
Beautiful car
I hesitate to ask what else you find beautiful beautiful this thing definitely is not.
My dream car. One day I can comfortable afford it I will buy it.
They need to get rid of those vents on the front of the car, or redesign them. Other than that, it's better looking than both the 3 and 4 series. Also, I wonder why they had to use two different platforms for the 2 series. They should have just made all the 2 series rear wheel drive.
Fwd. more space efficient for 4 dr., since they have both platforms, why not use them?
From the side view, I got a flashback of a Honda prelude from the early to mid 90s
While Joe Achilles posted 3.0 CSL, actually rwd. I6 3 box coupe German antecedent>4 cyl. fwd. Japanese economy turd.
What fool would buy the Supra over this? Also, people need to stop with the McPherson strut bashing - the best-steering cars you can buy (Cayman/Boxster and the 911) use McPherson struts. It's about engineering talent and effort put into tuning.
M240i "fastest" 2 series? M2 Competition and M2 CS would like to have a word with you.
🙌🏻
I mean Joe Achilles just timed the m240i X-drive at 3.79 seconds 0-60 so yea, the m240i X-drive IS the fastest accelerating 2 series as of right now. Once the tuning houses start flashing stage 1 tunes on it it's not even going to be close - awd is helping a lot here. But yea, that's only if you consider 0-60 times...I'd still take M2CS or M2C with it's manual transmission any day of the week that's for sure.
Thank god this looks better on video than in the press photos but the rear end is still awful and the front bumper is way too busy. The side profile is it's best. It seems they're trying to emulate the flat lines of Audi in this car. As a 5 time BMW owner I just feel the company has lost its way. Also, whoever made that font choice for the engine cover on the M240 needs to find another profession, it's horrendous
This makes me like the previous 2series more especially the m2 version…this one looks cartoonish lol
Not as much as your typing.
Alex seems more excited when he drove Toyota 86 than the BMW 2 series.
Sports car>GT, so why not?
Longer, wider, taller than an e46. Just need a manual and inline 6 that’s not an M2..
Old m2
4 Series grille looks like shite! BMW got things right with the 2 Series! Sub and Like added!
Looking forward to 240i vs. G70 comparison... :)
It will not be in the same ballpark in performance.
@@machtschnell7452 I'll wait for the side by side - tests I've seen are very close, for much less money...
ehhh..I don't think it would be a fair comparison..since the g70 is a 4 door and the 240i is 2 a door..price of a 240i option out would be low 60s and g70 would be mid 50s option out..0 to 60 on the 240i would be 4 seconds on the dot..g70 would be .6 or .7 slower..tech vs tech have to give it to 240i but not by that much..240i has that dashboard recording thing and that digital clusta Speedometer and the 3D camera of the car view..g70 has that thing where you use the turn signal and wherever your turning there is a camera to see in that direction in your speedometer..g70 has heated and Ventilated seats and heated steering wheel..240i just has the heated seats and steering wheel..no ventilated seats 👎🏾
@@samuelreid603 Agree on content of cars, but for less money, the performance, what I'd be interested in, is close for less money. Again, content differs, but let's put them both on a track & see how close they are...
@@samuelreid603 Actually the M240 can do 0 to 60 in 3.6 although I could only get 3.8.
