I was a teenager in California in the early 60's. I could walk in to the local Kmart and have my choice of .22lr, longs or shorts. We picked the shorts many times because they were 35 cents vs 50 cents for the long rifles(do they even make longs any more?). All the ammo was on the shelf available for inspection by anyone. I was about 16 and no clerk ever challenged me or required ID. To say California was different then is a massive understatement. Kudos to Paul for his masterful presentation.
I walked into a gun store in my state today. Carried in a pistol to trade. Walked out with the new pistol in about 20 minutes. Loaded it at my truck, strapped it on, and drove away.... Just sayin. I vote to keep this right every chance I get. Fight for your right to party. We have constitutional carry now, no permit required to conceal. Because we voted for the right people. We pay attention to the right issues. But, yes, that store I was in today did have .22 Long. They usually have S/L/LR, as well as a few old rifles chambered as such.

I was shot in the chest with a J22 Jimenez. It went through the front pectoral, ripped the upper lobe of my left lung and deflated it before it imbedded itself in my left shoulder. It's still there to this day. Those claiming a "cheap .22" won't go through clothing or do any damage if they do have obviously never been shot by a Saturday Night Special at close range.
@@NRG56 Well, i'm not saying that .22 is not lethal or something. This round kills, but it takes too long to do so. Sure the bad guy will bleed out and die if shot by a 22, but that will take time that you just don't have in a self-defense situation. Your best bet would be if he got scared off by the first shot or gave up on acting due to the pain, but if he's on drugs and won't feel any then your best bet would be to just magdump as many rounds as you can until he's on the ground... which could take a lot of shots. (Yes, i know you could aim for the face, but good luck explaining that to a judge...) It's better than nothing, sure, but in my opinion it is a round that should only be used for defense if you really, REALLY don't have a choice.
I spent most of my childhood, in the 50's and 60's, on remote sheep stations ( ranches ) in the northern and upper Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. When I tell young people of today that it was very common for people working on those properties to augment their incomes by shooting kangaroos for the bounty on them and how most of them did this with a .22, I usually get howled down and told it can't be done. In this country, at least, .22's seem to have been forgotten as an effective hunting rifle for medium sized prey and a lot of people dismiss them as little more than toys. The largest marsupial mammal in Australia is the Western Red kangaroo, found mostly in Western and Central Australia and some of the bigger males can stand up to 6 feet tall and weigh over 80kg yet I have seen people drop these big bucks with a normal .22 round. When I was a kid back then, very few people could afford a large calibre rifle or the ammunition for one, so the .22 was the go-to rifle for them. Don't under-estimate a .22 - in the right hands, they'll get the job done for you.

That was a very interesting video. As a kid back in the early 60's, I shot probably 25,000 5mm pellets out of my Sheridan Blue Streak pump up pellet rifle. I believe it shot at 650 fps, and was deadly to anything up to the size of a cottontail. I shot it so much because my dad wouldn't let me shoot a .22, not even a .22 short, because of all the live stock around. I thought he was overly cautious, because I thought a short was a wimpy round. Your video has vendicated dear old dad. As Mark Twain said, "when I was 16, my dad was the dumbest person in the world, but I was amazed how much he had learned by the time I was 25"
I have a .35 cal pellet gun that shoots at 1000fps and can easily take out almost anything but because of weird regulations and laws I don't need a license

With 19+ years of school training (military included), I have NEVER seen anyone whose lectures are more fact-filled, more understandable, and more coherent. There really should be a Harrell Firearms Academy. All of which is to express two things: (a) THANK YOU and (b) VERY BZ (“well done,” for those have not experienced Navy signals).
My step son got shot with a .22 long rifle, missed his heart by two inches, broke up and left particles in his left lung, biggest particle went thru and stopped under skin of left shoulder. Yep it went thru his shoulder bone. He still has cold weather aches. As always Paul great video, thanks for sharing. This is the reason I subbed last year!
When I was a child my brother was shot with a 22 cal . The kid across the street put a 22 round in a vice and it fired and hit my brother who was in the garage across the street. Just how accidents happen.

As a child, my mamma always said a pump-up pellet rifle was as powerful as a .22. She did this to vilify the air rifle, as to be an excuse to me not owning one. I grew up and have all kinds of firearms and motorcycles :D

I knew a guy that was grazed on top of the head by a .22. Luckily for him, it was only a grazing shot, but he said he went down instantly. He said that it felt like someone overhead slammed him on top of the head with a sledgehammer. Needless to say, he doesn't underestimate the power of a .22.

@Robo Redneck oh yeah well I once ate a 22LR in a bean burrito and later that night I shattered the toilet bowl. Thankfully the bullet came out un-fired and intact.
I'm one of those guys... Felt like I was slapped in the head by a large stick. Went in a couple of inches+ above my eyebrow and exited through my scalp about the center of the top of my head. Needless to say I never went hunting with "him" again... Scared the beegeezes out of me, but I wasn't seriously hurt. Here's the ugly truth... That accident was from a ricochet, from a shot at a rabbit that ran between my hunting partner an me. He had target fixation and didn't even see me. I'm sure the bullet was pretty mangled as the gash in my scalp was very ragged. I know it was at least part of the bullet as I dug a small sliver of lead out of my scalp. Fast forward to 2010... That's when I purchased 1st a Benjamin Marauder .22 cal and subsequently, a 2nd Marauder in .25 cal and a AirForce Condor in .25 cal. These are Precharged Pneumatic (PCP) guns normally charged to 3000 psi. The Condor hits CONSIDERABLY harder then the Marauders.. I shot a coyote about 4 inches below the spine, just behind his fore-leg at about 55 yards. The .25 cal dropped him like a hammer. I've dispatched several of his cousins since and its so VERY accurate and I now focus on head-shots when appropriate. I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the .25 cal Condor at just over 1150 FPS with a 33.95 gn JSB Exact King Heavy pellet! Pretty sure a well-placed shot would be human lethal at 50 yards. (Why pick on coyotes? Livestock protection during calving.)
Alright...I’ve been a RUclips gun review consumer since around 2010, when I started with Nutn on his AR vs AK series. I’ve seen pretty much every reviewer/content creator since then. This Paul Harrell is by far the most succinct, well informed guy out there. He’s got more information than garandthumb, a better cadence than MAC, and even keeps his videos moving at a better pace than Hickok. Really appreciate all the time, and effort you put into these videos Paul. It’s cliche, but keep up the good work, and thanks for everything you do.
Back in the 1970's when I was a youngster I mistakenly suggested to my father that my Crossman 760 was powerful, similar to a .22. He set up a piece of 3/4 inch plywood at 100 yards and I learned that my Crossman was nowhere near as powerful. Dad always seemed to teach me the best things.
D33Lux xx The Austrian army used a 46 caliber air rifle from the late 1700s to early 1800s. It was lethal up to 125 yards. Lewis and Clark took one with them on their famous expedition. It was a 30 shot repeater.
Hey Paul, I've been binge watching but something in this particular video made me want to comment and make an acknowledgement. The gesture you made when you were describing proper shot placement on a raccoon was extremely polite. You are professional and well mannered in a way that transcends most people's best idea of good etiquette. I am extremely appreciative to be learning calibers from a man without the term 'head shot' in his vocabulary. You're a great role model!
@vibratingstring Most carnivasls used to have a game in which you would fire a 22 short rifle at a target, pull off a miracle because the sights weren't even close, and you would win a prize. Now you just get those BB guns that will produce a 12 inch group at 10 feet with the rifle clamped in a vise.
@cloverleafsippa713 I dunno what era you are referring to. I'm nearly 50 and have been shooting 22lr, 22 short AND CB caps for well over 35 years. I know the difference, and the stuff I saw as a kid was most definitely shorts. I don't doubt that CB caps were used as well, just saying shorts most definitely were as well.
The opening seconds, "Distinguished Rifleman" badge, there are very few Soldier or Marine walking around with that award. People who are involved in the CMP, or were in the infantry knows the significance of that badge.
As usual I enjoyed your presentation on the .22 short. My personal experiences with .22 caliber rounds as a Combat Firefighter/Paramedic are that they're very deadly. I also frequently hunt with a .177 caliber match grade Beeman pellet rifle which is many times more accurate than even match grade .22's. I can take most game within it's admittedly shorter range due to the fact that I can place a round anywhere that I want. A bullet of pretty much any power to the brain stops most game. I have seen deadly GSW'S caused by pellet guns. They don't blow you apart, but they will definitely kill you. Thanks Paul. Keep up the good work.
Yes my family who are in the medical field esp those who were or are still in ER medicine will tell you pellets can kill and 22 shorts have killed also. They seen lots of it during gang wars where 22 rounds were often the prefer ammo choice due to low recoil and cheap availability. Plus pellets that are designed today are more deadly than years ago.

Read any gun/hunting mag and they make it sound like the only way to pot a squirrel or rabbit is with a ..22 LR-HP, minimum. My father, born 1916, hunted almost daily all winter in norther Minnesota for rabbits. he only used .22 shorts, because that was all the family could afford. He was an excellent shot and never failed to drop any rabbit he saw. As Paul said. Don't underestimate the .22 short.
@@keepermovin5906 Any decent BB gun will put a .177 in one side of a rabbit's head and clean out the other. A BB will penetrate a good inch or so - enough for game that small. I'd say anything over a 22 short is overkill unless you're shooting at a longer range than I'm expecting where your MOA makes it unlikely to hit your target anyway.
1950's world record bear: ... a .22 long....to the head...was like 15ft long or something like that stretched out (maybe more?). Native woman shot jt I think in Canada or Alaska or something. 1 shot, but many others were done to ensure it was expired after that. Despite that many went clean through the skull, I've seen photos galore of it from all angles. Rabbit cooked in good fatty oil (flour and egg of course if ya can) and you don't get protein poisoning. Can live on it a whule if you get a tiny bit of fat too. Rabbits are so good fried up. As is most fresh game. All you really need to do is poke a hole and they all do that. It's like getting stabbed by a 1/4" sharpened steel rod and having it removed. 22s are no joke. All guns even bb guns are leathal more than you'd think except those cheapest ones, they do fall a wee but short but still are even at 5-10 fpe. A basic cheap 1930's depression bolt action rifle in .22s/l/lr and a box of ammo can feed you a few weeks to a year if you go for the right stuff and more if you go for stuff ya shouldn't (aren't supposed to). Depression era was hell. Survival mode you do what you need. I am state south. Many stories from family and friends both of which I/we have a lot of. You do what you need to live. Being outdoors daily and thus a good shot accounts for a good deal of game. My goto is a CZ 452. I still enjoy all 22lr guns. My fav guns to shoot are 22lr rifles. Just something about being so cheap, accurate, small ammo, deadly having killed probably more game than all other guns combined, history, nostalgia of guns, etc make it so fun. You kinda want to be an expert with one. And one is never enough.
@@knurlgnar24 I agree from experience 1000000%. You just need to drill a small hole and it's instant death or close to it if not somehow. Placement is key, but it is like a quarter inch steel rod being shot clean through you. Same effect. Pellet gun, cheapmor expensive, 22s, 22 long, 22 lr, 22mag, etc. Doesn't really matter at all. It's the guy shooting it 99.9%. Head only for meat all the way too. Between eye & ear or eye & horn, nail between on most game (not all), equals food. Fun to stretch distance but a outdoors man can and should get close as he can, and also not be spotted even. That is the fun of it anyway.
@@AldoSchmedack That's exactly what my father had. .22 bolt action. No mag and had to manually cock the bolt. He was about 7 or 8. That would have been in the early 1920s. I still have it. The stock is screwed up and the hardware is missing. My next project is restocking it.
A buddy and I were shooting at a quarter stuck in a tree at 20 yards when one of our shots turned the quarter sideways. My buddy threw his rifle up and nailed it right on the edge! He turned to me and said "And that, son, is how it's done!" and walked away. I demanded that he do it again and he just said, over his shoulder, that he was out of ammo and was calling it a day!
If anyone doubts the lethality and damage to humans, of the modest .22LR, just ask a paramedic of some of our bigger cities. the numbers are staggering.
You are correct. Studies have shown that the lethality of different calibers, including the .22LR, are surprisingly similar across ALL calibers. However, the difference is knock down power. A bad guy dying from a .22LR wound can do a LOT of damage to you and others in the MINUTES it takes before he goes unconscious from his wound. Bigger calibers knock em down faster.

@@1notgilty people seem to forget not a lot of people, even the criminals can spot the difference in a gun right away, they see a gun and you shoot it and generally the human response is "get the fuck away." Yes knockdown power matters but you'll be surprised how many shootings like the original commenter are done in the city with a 22lr, fuck a 22 pistol is really fuckin common. People "survive" but their lives are forever changed because they've gotten 4-10 shots of 22 in them.
I had a Chiappa 1911-22 for a short while, ran great but only with CCI Minimags and Stingers. Anything less, (even Armscor) wouldn't cycle. Does yours have the same problem? when firing Armscor .22 High Velocity 36 Grain Hollow Points, the casing for the armscor would bulge and fail to extract, but CCI extracts and cycles every single time.
I remember well some friends of mine playing around with 22 bird shot. That stuff was not breaking glass. Another friend jumped on one of their motorcycles and speed off - playing, not to steal it, we lived on an island. In the spirit of play his buddy shot him with the bird shot. He and the bike went down like he got hit with a hunting rifle. That bird shot barely broke the skin in about a hundred places and he spent quite some time laying on a table getting the tiny grains of lead picked out of him. @ you Lloyd

Just a heads up, intro doesn't matter to me one way or the other, I tune in for the content of your videos ( always top notch) AND the gunfire in the background is great, it means you are out there putting everything to the test and bringing us along to see the results. Not sitting at a table, regurgitating info that was printed on a box, or printed in a magazine, or worse yet info that was gleaned from a beer and bullshit session somewhere. Keep up the GREAT WORK.

That was an interesting and even eye opening comparison video on .22 ammo. I'm pretty impressed with the results of both the long vs short both fired out of a revolver and rifle comparison. The added pellet projectile data was a nice add.
The best thing about .22 shorts is that it takes your 16 round golden boy and magically transforms it into a 21 round "high capacity assault lever gun".

Yes, barrels are marked .22 S/L/LR. They work very well, mine feeds and shoots everything. They say not to shoot CB or caps out of them, but the they work well out of mine.
II have an old Marlin 97 (I think) in .22 short. Holds 25 rounds, half a box of shells. 24" octagon barrel. Might be a 97/39 Frankenstein, but it sure likes those shorts.
Sadly, there are many people in the graveyard whose last words were "It's only a .22." When I used to teach hunter safety classes, we stressed how many people usually end up getting shot with a .22 because they look at the bullet and are fooled into thinking not that powerful. I always prefer Standard Velocity for small game hunting when it comes to squirrels and such, and a few years ago I shot a cottontail rabbit about 20 yards out, behind the shoulder right to left. The rabbit rolled over stone dead, and when I skinned it out, I was shocked to see the size of the exit wound considering the 40 grain solid didn't hit bone. It was easily an inch and a half in diameter. I showed my son a couple of years back why the .22 isn't the lightweight people think it is. I shot a large woodchuck with .22 LR CCI Mini Mags at 60 yards in the head. It was instantly fatal and the damage was pretty extensive. The .22 Short was the first real centerfire handgun round that was used for personal defense in those little Smith & Wesson Model 1 revolvers. It might not have been a lot compared to the later cartridge revolvers but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one.
I'll be sure to warn the next home invasion goon that comes to 'meet me' that I have a .22. Maybe he'll remember how lethal to rodents and varmints it can be, and run away? . . . On further reflection, I'll stick with my 12gauge BPS.
I once accidentally shot and killed a squirrel with a Daisy BB rifle gun, took one hit and it killed the creature who was standing on a pine branch from at least 30 yards out on a slightly sloped hillside... I regret this shot because I had only planned to scare the squirrel but I actually hit it in the chest and oddly the squirrel hung onto the branch with one hand for a few seconds before it finally let go and dropped dead. So don't underestimate BB Guns too!
I love my .22's! I sometimes carry my SR22 pistol because it conceals well with shorts and a tshirt. A 22 might not be super powerful but you can accurately dump a whole magazine in a target really fast. It leaves little wholes but there will be a lot of them!
I’m 56 years old and all my life of shooting, the long rifle has been the cheapest because of volume of production. In older times the short was because of gallery guns and more common uses the country went through a lot. I’ve read personal biographies of several famous hunters who got their start walking to the country store and buying however many loose shorts they could afford out of a box! Tines were hard back in the old days!
I agree about the "tempo," but if it is a choice between chronograph time and having more facts more often, I'd rather listen to the traditional intro than him reading out each shot. I think "...Now let's go crunch the numbers.." relaxes me more than gunfire as long as it is followed by "the meat target." "But how effective will it be against really serious targets like these soda jugs?" is more funny than useful. I have to say I wonder if the _"...high tech fleece bullet stop.." with a few sticks in it_ would versus _a meat target with pork chop pectoral_ versus _a 20 inch block of ballistic gel_ versus _milk cartons_ would compare using white box .38 Special or 9mm.
Just my experience, for what it’s worth, years ago I got shot with a 22 short out of a small revolver. Was January and was wearing multiple layers and a thick winter jacket, went completely through my left arm and out the back of my jacket. So like 3 layers in front another 3 in back, plus another part of the jacket upon exiting. Plus muscle and tissue. Left a good bit of shrapnel in my arm, had to have surgery to reattach nerves, took a while to recover and never will be 100%. Definitely not to be underestimated
@robert warner I shot 3/4 inch plywood with .22 shorts leaned up against a block wall. Some of them reached the back of the plywood, others went through and dimpled the concrete. A 1/4 inch section of plywood is just not going to cut it. About as effective as sheet cardboard.
robin6512 yup, .22 is a toy has got a lot of unsafe handling which has also resulted in a lot of injury and death. It is possibly one of the most accidentally dangerous rounds out there because of this. One of my neighbors
Accidentally killed his pregnant wife during an argument about him having guns. His defence was they were “just” .22’s and not very dangerous. He actually begged for the death penalty in court, (Canada so his plea was ignored of course and it was an accident according to witnesses). I’ve personally seen experienced shooters suddenly relax their “rules” when handed a .22 which is madness.
I won't stand 100 yards away and let anyone shoot me with a 300fps red rider bb gun, I definitely won't stand in front of a .22lr. But then again, I know how deadly the .22 is but I don't want to be shot by anything lol
A .22LR CCI will go through a half inch pine board at 440 yards, or a quarter mile. That may be enough to penetrate the nose into the five inches of cartilage, flesh and thin piece of bone between you and a person's medulla oblongata. The range of a 22LR is deadly far beyond what it can be fired accurately.

Well, you aren't incorrect with the over-accessorization assessment. But many a serious firearm user, enthusiast, etc., look down on the 'make it look cool' crowd. The form over function guys over at ARFcom (which is, easily, 60% of ARFcommers it seems) have taken it way too far - choosing items based on looks over what they do or add to a weapon platform.
Mambo Dave I dunno to each their own. I personally dig it. Its very subtle and not obnoxious. I guess the old addage " you do what you do where ypu live and I do what I do where I live and thats what makes you you and thats what makes me me " applies. As long as it doesnt look rediculous I can dig it.
I have hunted a lot of squirrels with both .22 LR in a rifle, and also a .177 1,000 fps rated pellet rifle. The results were always that the pellet gun was far more effective on squirrels. While the .22 LR would always whiz right through the squirrels, the pellets from the pellet gun (always wadcutter or HP) would rarely exit the body and would have far more "knockdown power". It was like the .22 LR's has so little resistance that they whizzed right through a squirrel body with no expansion and less damage. The squirrels would eventually die, but usually within a minute or so. Conversely, with the 1,000 fps pellet rifle with wadcutters or HP's, the squirrels were dead almost instantly. The pellet rifle with it's limited energy, yet high velocity was able to dump all of it's energy into a squirrel's body. The pellet rifle was always far more effective for squirrel hunting, for me. A pointed pellet on the other hand, would always have similar results to the .22 LR.
I always had good success at long range with the "Bulldog" pellets, (Domed Pellets) myself. I know what you mean about the wadcutters and HP's. I favored the wadcutter over the HP's at close range because it seemed to have adequate penetration, would remain in the carcass in my experience and therefore would impart 100% of the projectile energy. They are effective for use on mammals up to raccoon size and crows.
I've had good luck on squirrels with .22 shot shells. At fairly close range, 20 feet or less, the squirrels simply flop over as soon as they are hit. They don't even twitch. I use a High Standard Sport King pistol, which has a 6 3/4" barrel.
I shot my father's 22lr berreta pistol close range at a steel 55 gallon garbage drum..it went thru the front leaving a clean hole and put a good dent on the other side before stopping...I also shot it thru a thick book I think it stopped at page 262..22lr is pretty darn strong.
I did a drive by on a dude for huffing paint in front of my house. I warned him twice. Old gluebag felt that sting, grabbed his ass with two hands and got the fuck up the road!! Another satisfied customer.

Grew up shooting my dads Rem model 76 (lever action nylon). Great gun. Went to a couple gun shows with my daughter and spotted a model 66 priced at almost $500. At the second gun show saw another priced at $300. Almost perfect condition. Didn't get 10 feet away before turning around and buying it. The next time my daughter came over to visit, she shot it and fell in love with it. I remember seeing these guns years ago going for around $100 all day long. Wish I would have bought a couple back then.
Not exactly comparison but I've been shot by an airsoft bb and it pain as hell! I'd say if toygun can deliver pain, a .22 would do it much much much worse.
My dad had a 22 Winchester bolt action hes 73 used to shoot 22 shorts out of when I was a Kid , My sister borrowed it and has fare as I know she sold it without telling my father Im so pissed it was super accurate , One day would like to buy one and give it to my father .
My dad was a gunsmith and he handcrafted his own. Rifles sometimes out of English Walnut wood and stained and did the whole thing, cut it out himself for a stock for bolt action rifle and he made this 243 Winchester that was Sweet, I mean it had a nice Barrel a excellent scope. Made from a Mauser action bolt action was made from a Mauser because it's reliable and durable rigid accurate. And he chambered in 243. Like I said. And hand load it is on rounds with the 77 grain boat tail. Hollow point Hornady match-grade. Bullet with I forgot the brand of casing and I forgot to charge load but I do know it was IMR 4350, but I don't know how much you put. And I also don't know the primers he used but he got on the first time shooting that gun after he got at zero. He was able to get three shot inside of a dime. He was able to cover his shots with a dime on the paper when he walked up to it. And he can do that consistently every single time at over a hundred yards like a hundred or something like that. And man, let me tell you the 243 Winchester, especially when loaded with the configuration Is a hot screaming load super high velocities flat trajectory And for all that don't know. The 243 Winchester is just a 308 Winchester also known as 7.62 x51mm. Next down to 6 mm diameter instead of 7.62 millimeter. And I don't even have my dad's name on it the date serial number it was all his handmade gun. Only thing you didn't make was the trigger and that was about it. He had He Aleve Mill and everything
When I was a teenager I inherited a family heirloom,an old ranger .22 single that is still to this day the most accurate gun for me I have ever shot out of many, I was on garden patrol one day for squirrel s, rabbits,groundhogs ect. When I encountered a deer , I went for an ear shot that was like flipping an off switch and I drug it back to the house my granddad couldn't believe it, now days there is no way with many other options I would choose to hunt deer with a .22, let alone a short but that's a time I'll never forget
I prefer a scoped shotgun myself; something with a 36 inch barrel. I used to shoot the 32 inch barreled shotguns, but it wasn't as accurate and not all of the smokeless powder was burning completely. Longer is always better.
Solid, unbiased review. I own 4 22’s - Ruger Mark III, Ruger Mark 4, Ruger Takedown and an old pump 22. While I appreciate the stopping power of higher calibers such as 9mm. I am insanely accurate with my 22 handguns. In the end, accuracy trumps caliber.
I'd say get a 38 or bigger but if its what u got..n what you can fire comfortably..go for it BUT. Practice..practice..n more practice. As often as possible
Dana Freeman I have killed 6 deer with .22. One shot each. The farthest one went after being shot was about 60 yards. I'm not as tough as a deer. Don't underestimate because of fools talk.

Of all the rifles and pistols in my safe, my 42 year old Marlin 39A is my favorite. I've collected a LOT of small game for the table, plus I've dropped a lot of varmints that developed a taste for my wife's various fowl. And coyotes within 100 yards that think they might want a taste of livestock, find that a CCI Stinger ends their appetite permanently. I use .22 CB shorts for squirrel hunting, because the low velocity report doesn't put every squirrel in walking distance on high alert. And the CBs are great for clearing venomous reptiles from the pond where my grandkids fish quite often. I have to wonder if my Marlin 39A, with a capacity of 26 shorts might be considered an assault weapon by those that seem to know so very much about firearms. :) And with 19 LR in place, it is truly a "load on Sunday; shoot all week long" game getter. If I had just one firearm, this would be the one. And, in fact, for some years, it was my only firearm. And thanks again, Paul, for your expertise and insights that you share with us.
Well, I guess I'm probably within your Dad's generation. And I did have a Nylon 66 which I bought in 1969, upon return from my tour as a USN Corpsman. Never set foot on a Navy vessel, but did get to see some interesting places with the USMC. But at that time I couldn't afford the Marlin. The 66 was sold because I didn't have the option of using shorts, unless I wanted to use it as a single shot. I also have an affinity for the first rifle I qualified with in the USN, which was an M1 Garand. (Later the M14 and finally the M16). They wouldn't let me take that Garand home, so about 20 some odd years ago, I bought an M1 Garand Tanker. I'm sure you are familiar with General Patton's design effort, which created a carbine version of the "best battle rifle in history" that was 6" shorter and let tankers exit their battle wagon more easily. I'm always impressed with how accurate this rifle is...and how soft it shoots with gas operation. As with most of my firearms, I got them below cost due to my gunsmithing, which prompted me to get my FFL about 30 years ago.
I also have a Marlin 39A. Hard to find rifle. I got lucky and found it in a country hardware store in Hillsboro, Ohio, and yes; the gun is a tack driver. I also have Ruger 10 / 22, the Ruger SS Single Six with convertible cylinder for .22 Magnums, and a Hwritage aRough Rider convertible. I like my .22’s On another note I am a huge fan of air rifles. I have a Beeman R1 Magnum in .177 caliber that is made in West Germany, and that is where most of the high end Spring Piston air rifles are made. The accuracy and power from them is very impressive. Obviously the larger the caliber the more FPE. I just purchased a .22 caliber made by Air Arms and is the S510 Ultimate Sporter XS which is a regulated PCP air rifle that generates 32 FPE at the muzzle and you might be able to get a little more. PCP stands for pre-charged pneumatic. These air rifles typically run off of 2,900 psi to just over 3,600 psi like my rifle does. You should see the .25, 30 caliber air rifles they have out now, they are generating up to 100 FPE at the muzzle. When you get into the big bore air rifles they are now getting over 600 FPE at the muzzle. The custom big bore air rifles are getting up to 1,800 FPE at the muzzle and possibly even more now. You Tuber and custom casting slugs Mr. Hollow Point has a 20mm custom big bore air rifle shooting a 1,150 grain slug generating 1,776 FPE at the muzzle using helium. Watch the video. It is mind boggling. They are hunting big game here in the USA where it is allowed, and taking down big game in Africa. I will be getting an FX Impact in .30 caliber that generates up to 82 FPE at the muzzle, and then an Air Force Texan SS in .45 caliber that generates up to 430 FPE at the muzzle. With all that being said, don’t underestimate a .22 powder burner, and don’t underestimate an air rifle. Air rifles been around longer than firearms and they used to go to war with them way back in the day, and yes they were lethal back then just as they are today. They are extremely accurate also.

I grew up shooting BB caps, CB caps and shorts. Never had much need of longs. Long rifles were used to kill cows that we butchered. Much respect for the 22.

Me too. I used a break action Savage over-under 20 gauge / 22. Still have the gun. If you need to eat, over under with a 22 will put food on the table.

I got one of the PCP Airguns that launches a .22 pellet at about 825 fps which works out to about 21 ft/lbs of energy. In your example the target short was producing approximately 45 ft/lbs and the short hp approximately 75. So the my pellet gun is not nearly as powerful as you rimfire rounds in the example. Having said that, there are more powerful pellet guns than mine out there and I can tell you from personal experience a 21 ft/lb projectile can easily take small game with good shot placement. So as you said don't underestimate these things they can do some serious damage.
Keep in mind a CCI Mini-Mag 40gr RN out of a rifle will produce around 135 FPE, and a CCI Stinger will produce around 190 FPE. PCP's putting out 21 FPE are certainly nice and quiet and are probably perfect for rabbits, squirrels and the like, but they aren't even close to the power of a 22LR, let alone the power of a 45 FPE 22 Short round.
@edwardschlosser1 You provide some good examples that show there are high powered (and more expensive than an entry level 22LR rifle ) air rifles out there that use larger calibers than the .22 LR. My point was on the roughly $200-300 21 FPE ubiquitous Gas Piston Break Barrel or Benjamin Fortitude entry level PCP type option that people like to compare with 22LR erroneously.
@@EuropaWill You got a point, Paul does acknowledge that there are "more expensive airguns that can take deer" in his video, so he is aware. My Hatsan Blitz .30 puts out 60 FPE with 61gr NSA HP Slugs (comparable to the 22 short or 22lr shot out of a pistol), and it's full/ semi auto with 16 round mags. Now this is a $1000 airgun, but it almost perfectly matches the energy of those caliber rounds, aside from the price (worth every penny get one before they ban them) it would be the best airgun to test against them. Everyone that is upset over his use of a break barrel .177 is because the test wasn't conducted to show that Airguns can be as capable as some firearms, don't get me wrong, firearms got airguns beat by a mile in terms of FPE.. but they are comparable in smaller/pistol caliber rounds.
I received several firearms from my grandfather after he passed, and we were able to shoot most of them while he was alive and it is an experience ill be grateful for as long as I live, what brought me to watch this video, in particular, is that one, or two, I can't remember right now of them were 22 short pistols and because they only fire short, and are a lot of fun to shoot I tend to pick up all the 22 short I can find when I do go shopping for ammo. its good to know that its also a useful firearm for pest control in the future or when I go camping in Vermont. A 20fpe pellet gun is lethal with head shots, even chest shots, depending on clothing. People underestimate too much in society and this is why people get hurt and killed by 22lr and pellet rifles.

I was a teenager in California in the early 60's. I could walk in to the local Kmart and have my choice of .22lr, longs or shorts. We picked the shorts many times because they were 35 cents vs 50 cents for the long rifles(do they even make longs any more?). All the ammo was on the shelf available for inspection by anyone. I was about 16 and no clerk ever challenged me or required ID. To say California was different then is a massive understatement. Kudos to Paul for his masterful presentation.
California was great until the 90's when it turned. There is a lag between that turn and downfall. We're seeing the start of it now.

I walked into a gun store in my state today. Carried in a pistol to trade. Walked out with the new pistol in about 20 minutes. Loaded it at my truck, strapped it on, and drove away.... Just sayin. I vote to keep this right every chance I get. Fight for your right to party. We have constitutional carry now, no permit required to conceal. Because we voted for the right people. We pay attention to the right issues. But, yes, that store I was in today did have .22 Long. They usually have S/L/LR, as well as a few old rifles chambered as such.

I had a ricochet .177 hit my wrist at a low angle and it really stung and easily broke the skin... and made a small furrow in my skin...
I was shot in the chest with a J22 Jimenez. It went through the front pectoral, ripped the upper lobe of my left lung and deflated it before it imbedded itself in my left shoulder. It's still there to this day. Those claiming a "cheap .22" won't go through clothing or do any damage if they do have obviously never been shot by a Saturday Night Special at close range.

@@NRG56 Well, i'm not saying that .22 is not lethal or something. This round kills, but it takes too long to do so. Sure the bad guy will bleed out and die if shot by a 22, but that will take time that you just don't have in a self-defense situation. Your best bet would be if he got scared off by the first shot or gave up on acting due to the pain, but if he's on drugs and won't feel any then your best bet would be to just magdump as many rounds as you can until he's on the ground... which could take a lot of shots. (Yes, i know you could aim for the face, but good luck explaining that to a judge...)
It's better than nothing, sure, but in my opinion it is a round that should only be used for defense if you really, REALLY don't have a choice.
I spent most of my childhood, in the 50's and 60's, on remote sheep stations ( ranches ) in the northern and upper Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. When I tell young people of today that it was very common for people working on those properties to augment their incomes by shooting kangaroos for the bounty on them and how most of them did this with a .22, I usually get howled down and told it can't be done.
In this country, at least, .22's seem to have been forgotten as an effective hunting rifle for medium sized prey and a lot of people dismiss them as little more than toys. The largest marsupial mammal in Australia is the Western Red kangaroo, found mostly in Western and Central Australia and some of the bigger males can stand up to 6 feet tall and weigh over 80kg yet I have seen people drop these big bucks with a normal .22 round. When I was a kid back then, very few people could afford a large calibre rifle or the ammunition for one, so the .22 was the go-to rifle for them.
Don't under-estimate a .22 - in the right hands, they'll get the job done for you.

That was a very interesting video. As a kid back in the early 60's, I shot probably 25,000 5mm pellets out of my Sheridan Blue Streak pump up pellet rifle. I believe it shot at 650 fps, and was deadly to anything up to the size of a cottontail. I shot it so much because my dad wouldn't let me shoot a .22, not even a .22 short, because of all the live stock around. I thought he was overly cautious, because I thought a short was a wimpy round. Your video has vendicated dear old dad. My step son got shot with a .22 long rifle, missed his heart by two inches, broke up and left particles in his left lung, biggest particle went thru and stopped under skin of left shoulder. I knew a guy that was grazed on top of the head by a .22. Luckily for him, it was only a grazing shot, but he said he went down instantly. He said that it felt like someone overhead slammed him on top of the head with a sledgehammer. Needless to say, he doesn't underestimate the power of a .22.
It didn't "knock" him to the ground because it simply does not have the force to do so... but getting a hole in your shin will tend to make you fall.

I'm one of those guys... Felt like I was slapped in the head by a large stick. Went in a couple of inches+ above my eyebrow and exited through my scalp about the center of the top of my head. Needless to say I never went hunting with "him" again... Scared the beegeezes out of me, but I wasn't seriously hurt. Here's the ugly truth... That accident was from a ricochet, from a shot at a rabbit that ran between my hunting partner an me. He had target fixation and didn't even see me. I'm sure the bullet was pretty mangled as the gash in my scalp was very ragged. I know it was at least part of the bullet as I dug a small sliver of lead out of my scalp. Fast forward to 2010... That's when I purchased 1st a Benjamin Marauder .22 cal and subsequently, a 2nd Marauder in .25 cal and a AirForce Condor in .25 cal. These are Precharged Pneumatic (PCP) guns normally charged to 3000 psi. The Condor hits CONSIDERABLY harder then the Marauders.. I shot a coyote about 4 inches below the spine, just behind his fore-leg at about 55 yards. The .25 cal dropped him like a hammer. I've dispatched several of his cousins since and its so VERY accurate and I now focus on head-shots when appropriate. I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the .25 cal Condor at just over 1150 FPS with a 33.95 gn JSB Exact King Heavy pellet! Pretty sure a well-placed shot would be human lethal at 50 yards. (Why pick on coyotes? Livestock protection during calving.)

Alright...I’ve been a RUclips gun review consumer since around 2010, when I started with Nutn on his AR vs AK series. I’ve seen pretty much every reviewer/content creator since then. This Paul Harrell is by far the most succinct, well informed guy out there. He’s got more information than garandthumb, a better cadence than MAC, and even keeps his videos moving at a better pace than Hickok. Really appreciate all the time, and effort you put into these videos Paul. It’s cliche, but keep up the good work, and thanks for everything you do.
Back in the 1970's when I was a youngster I mistakenly suggested to my father that my Crossman 760 was powerful, similar to a .22. He set up a piece of 3/4 inch plywood at 100 yards and I learned that my Crossman was nowhere near as powerful. Dad always seemed to teach me the best things.

The Austrian army used a 46 caliber air rifle from the late 1700s to early 1800s. It was lethal up to 125 yards. Lewis and Clark took one with them on their famous expedition. It was a 30 shot repeater.

@vibratingstring Most carnivasls used to have a game in which you would fire a 22 short rifle at a target, pull off a miracle because the sights weren't even close, and you would win a prize. Now you just get those BB guns that will produce a 12 inch group at 10 feet with the rifle clamped in a vise.

I know the difference, and the stuff I saw as a kid was most definitely shorts. I don't doubt that CB caps were used as well, just saying shorts most definitely were as well.
The opening seconds, "Distinguished Rifleman" badge, there are very few Soldier or Marine walking around with that award. People who are involved in the CMP, or were in the infantry knows the significance of that badge.
I received that medal in the Air Force.
I was in the infantry in fort Benning Georgia. By the way he shoots and his knowledge of firearms, his bolo badge should be should be expert.

As usual I enjoyed your presentation on the .22 short. My personal experiences with
.22 caliber rounds as a Combat Firefighter/Paramedic are that they're very deadly. I also frequently hunt with a .177 caliber match grade Beeman pellet rifle which is many times more accurate than even match grade .22's. I can take most game within it's admittedly shorter range due to the fact that I can place a round anywhere that I want. A bullet of pretty much any power to the brain stops most game. I have seen deadly GSW'S caused by pellet guns. They don't blow you apart, but they will definitely kill you. Thanks Paul. Keep up the good work.

Yes my family who are in the medical field esp those who were or are still in ER medicine will tell you pellets can kill and 22 shorts have killed also. They seen lots of it during gang wars where 22 rounds were often the prefer ammo choice due to low recoil and cheap availability. Plus pellets that are designed today are more deadly than years ago.

Read any gun/hunting mag and they make it sound like the only way to pot a squirrel or rabbit is with a ..22 LR-HP, minimum. My father, born 1916, hunted almost daily all winter in norther Minnesota for rabbits. he only used .22 shorts, because that was all the family could afford. He was an excellent shot and never failed to drop any rabbit he saw. As Paul said. Don't underestimate the .22 short.

@@keepermovin5906 Any decent BB gun will put a .177 in one side of a rabbit's head and clean out the other. A BB will penetrate a good inch or so - enough for game that small. I'd say anything over a 22 short is overkill unless you're shooting at a longer range than I'm expecting where your MOA makes it unlikely to hit your target anyway.
1950's world record bear: ... a .22 long....to the head...was like 15ft long or something like that stretched out (maybe more?). Native woman shot jt I think in Canada or Alaska or something. 1 shot, but many others were done to ensure it was expired after that. Despite that many went clean through the skull, I've seen photos galore of it from all angles.
Rabbit cooked in good fatty oil (flour and egg of course if ya can) and you don't get protein poisoning. Can live on it a whule if you get a tiny bit of fat too. Rabbits are so good fried up. As is most fresh game. All you really need to do is poke a hole and they all do that. It's like getting stabbed by a 1/4" sharpened steel rod and having it removed. 22s are no joke. All guns even bb guns are leathal more than you'd think except those cheapest ones, they do fall a wee but short but still are even at 5-10 fpe.
A basic cheap 1930's depression bolt action rifle in .22s/l/lr and a box of ammo can feed you a few weeks to a year if you go for the right stuff and more if you go for stuff ya shouldn't (aren't supposed to). Depression era was hell. Survival mode you do what you need. I am state south. Many stories from family and friends both of which I/we have a lot of.
You do what you need to live. Being outdoors daily and thus a good shot accounts for a good deal of game. My goto is a CZ 452. I still enjoy all 22lr guns. My fav guns to shoot are 22lr rifles. Just something about being so cheap, accurate, small ammo, deadly having killed probably more game than all other guns combined, history, nostalgia of guns, etc make it so fun. You kinda want to be an expert with one. And one is never enough.
@@knurlgnar24 I agree from experience 1000000%. You just need to drill a small hole and it's instant death or close to it if not somehow. Placement is key, but it is like a quarter inch steel rod being shot clean through you. Same effect. Pellet gun, cheapmor expensive, 22s, 22 long, 22 lr, 22mag, etc. Doesn't really matter at all. It's the guy shooting it 99.9%. Head only for meat all the way too. Between eye & ear or eye & horn, nail between on most game (not all), equals food. Fun to stretch distance but a outdoors man can and should get close as he can, and also not be spotted even. That is the fun of it anyway.
@@AldoSchmedack That's exactly what my father had. .22 bolt action. No mag and had to manually cock the bolt. He was about 7 or 8. That would have been in the early 1920s. I still have it. The stock is screwed up and the hardware is missing. My next project is restocking it.

He turned to me and said "And that, son, is how it's done!" and walked away. I demanded that he do it again and he just said, over his shoulder, that he was out of ammo and was calling it a day!

You are correct. Studies have shown that the lethality of different calibers, including the .22LR, are surprisingly similar across ALL calibers. However, the difference is knock down power. A bad guy dying from a .22LR wound can do a LOT of damage to you and others in the MINUTES it takes before he goes unconscious from his wound. Bigger calibers knock em down faster.

The .22 auto pistol that looked like a Beretta was a Chiappa model POS.
I had a Chiappa 1911-22 for a short while, ran great but only with CCI Minimags and Stingers. Anything less, (even Armscor) wouldn't cycle. Does yours have the same problem? when firing Armscor .22 High Velocity 36 Grain Hollow Points, the casing for the armscor would bulge and fail to extract, but CCI extracts and cycles every single time.
I just picked up Beretta's .22 upper for my 92. I haven't tried it yet, I can't wait. I had a .22 upper for my Gold Cup and enjoyed it.

Another friend jumped on one of their motorcycles and speed off - playing, not to steal it, we lived on an island. In the spirit of play his buddy shot him with the bird shot. He and the bike went down like he got hit with a hunting rifle. That bird shot barely broke the skin in about a hundred places and he spent quite some time laying on a table getting the tiny grains of lead picked out of him. @ you Lloyd

That was an interesting and even eye opening comparison video on .22 ammo. I'm pretty impressed with the results of both the long vs short both fired out of a revolver and rifle comparison. The added pellet projectile data was a nice add.
The best thing about .22 shorts is that it takes your 16 round golden boy and magically transforms it into a 21 round "high capacity assault lever gun".

Yes, barrels are marked .22 S/L/LR. They work very well, mine feeds and shoots everything. They say not to shoot CB or caps out of them, but the they work well out of mine.

II have an old Marlin 97 (I think) in .22 short. Holds 25 rounds, half a box of shells. 24" octagon barrel. Might be a 97/39 Frankenstein, but it sure likes those shorts.

Sadly, there are many people in the graveyard whose last words were "It's only a .22." When I used to teach hunter safety classes, we stressed how many people usually end up getting shot with a .22 because they look at the bullet and are fooled into thinking not that powerful. I always prefer Standard Velocity for small game hunting when it comes to squirrels and such, and a few years ago I shot a cottontail rabbit about 20 yards out, behind the shoulder right to left. The rabbit rolled over stone dead, and when I skinned it out, I was shocked to see the size of the exit wound considering the 40 grain solid didn't hit bone. It was easily an inch and a half in diameter. I showed my son a couple of years back why the .22 isn't the lightweight people think it is. I shot a large woodchuck with .22 LR CCI Mini Mags at 60 yards in the head. It was instantly fatal and the damage was pretty extensive. The .22 Short was the first real centerfire handgun round that was used for personal defense in those little Smith & Wesson Model 1 revolvers. It might not have been a lot compared to the later cartridge revolvers but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one.
.22 Short is NOT a "centerfire" round. But the projectile IS propelled by gunpowder.
I'll be sure to warn the next home invasion goon that comes to 'meet me' that I have a .22.

I once accidentally shot and killed a squirrel with a Daisy BB rifle gun, took one hit and it killed the creature who was standing on a pine branch from at least 30 yards out on a slightly sloped hillside... I regret this shot because I had only planned to scare the squirrel but I actually hit it in the chest and oddly the squirrel hung onto the branch with one hand for a few seconds before it finally let go and dropped dead. So don't underestimate BB Guns too!

I love my .22's! I sometimes carry my SR22 pistol because it conceals well with shorts and a tshirt. A 22 might not be super powerful but you can accurately dump a whole magazine in a target really fast. It leaves little wholes but there will be a lot of them!
I’m 56 years old and all my life of shooting, the long rifle has been the cheapest because of volume of production. In older times the short was because of gallery guns and more common uses the country went through a lot. I’ve read personal biographies of several famous hunters who got their start walking to the country store and buying however many loose shorts they could afford out of a box! Tines were hard back in the old days!

I agree about the "tempo," but if it is a choice between chronograph time and having more facts more often, I'd rather listen to the traditional intro than him reading out each shot. I think "...Now let's go crunch the numbers.." relaxes me more than gunfire as long as it is followed by "the meat target." "But how effective will it be against really serious targets like these soda jugs?" is more funny than useful.
I have to say I wonder if the _"...high tech fleece bullet stop.." with a few sticks in it_ would versus _a meat target with pork chop pectoral_ versus _a 20 inch block of ballistic gel_ versus _milk cartons_ would compare using white box .38 Special or 9mm.

Just my experience, for what it’s worth, years ago I got shot with a 22 short out of a small revolver. Was January and was wearing multiple layers and a thick winter jacket, went completely through my left arm and out the back of my jacket. So like 3 layers in front another 3 in back, plus another part of the jacket upon exiting. Plus muscle and tissue. Left a good bit of shrapnel in my arm, had to have surgery to reattach nerves, took a while to recover and never will be 100%. Definitely not to be underestimated

@robert warner I shot 3/4 inch plywood with .22 shorts leaned up against a block wall. Some of them reached the back of the plywood, others went through and dimpled the concrete. A 1/4 inch section of plywood is just not going to cut it. About as effective as sheet cardboard.

Accidentally killed his pregnant wife during an argument about him having guns. His defence was they were “just” .22’s and not very dangerous. He actually begged for the death penalty in court, (Canada so his plea was ignored of course and it was an accident according to witnesses). I’ve personally seen experienced shooters suddenly relax their “rules” when handed a .22 which is madness.
I won't stand 100 yards away and let anyone shoot me with a 300fps red rider bb gun, I definitely won't stand in front of a .22lr. But then again, I know how deadly the .22 is but I don't want to be shot by anything lol
A .22LR CCI will go through a half inch pine board at 440 yards, or a quarter mile. That may be enough to penetrate the nose into the five inches of cartilage, flesh and thin piece of bone between you and a person's medulla oblongata. The range of a 22LR is deadly far beyond what it can be fired accurately.

Well, you aren't incorrect with the over-accessorization assessment. But many a serious firearm user, enthusiast, etc., look down on the 'make it look cool' crowd. The form over function guys over at ARFcom (which is, easily, 60% of ARFcommers it seems) have taken it way too far - choosing items based on looks over what they do or add to a weapon platform.

I have hunted a lot of squirrels with both .22 LR in a rifle, and also a .177 1,000 fps rated pellet rifle. The results were always that the pellet gun was far more effective on squirrels. While the .22 LR would always whiz right through the squirrels, the pellets from the pellet gun (always wadcutter or HP) would rarely exit the body and would have far more "knockdown power".
It was like the .22 LR's has so little resistance that they whizzed right through a squirrel body with no expansion and less damage. The squirrels would eventually die, but usually within a minute or so. Conversely, with the 1,000 fps pellet rifle with wadcutters or HP's, the squirrels were dead almost instantly. The pellet rifle with it's limited energy, yet high velocity was able to dump all of it's energy into a squirrel's body. The pellet rifle was always far more effective for squirrel hunting, for me. A pointed pellet on the other hand, would always have similar results to the .22 LR.
I always had good success at long range with the "Bulldog" pellets, (Domed Pellets) myself.
I know what you mean about the wadcutters and HP's. I favored the wadcutter over the HP's at close range because it seemed to have adequate penetration, would remain in the carcass in my experience and therefore would impart 100% of the projectile energy.
They are effective for use on mammals up to raccoon size and crows.
I've had good luck on squirrels with .22 shot shells. At fairly close range, 20 feet or less, the squirrels simply flop over as soon as they are hit. They don't even twitch. I use a High Standard Sport King pistol, which has a 6 3/4" barrel.
5.56 NATO from an AR-15A2 works pretty well on squirrels too. Although if you plan to eat them, I wouldn't recommend it. There isn't much left.
On the plus side, whatever is left should be well cooked!

I shot my father's 22lr berreta pistol close range at a steel 55 gallon garbage drum..it went thru the front leaving a clean hole and put a good dent on the other side before stopping...I also shot it thru a thick book I think it stopped at page 262..22lr is pretty darn strong.
I did a drive by on a dude for huffing paint in front of my house. I warned him twice. Old gluebag felt that sting, grabbed his ass with two hands and got the fuck up the road!! Another satisfied customer.

Grew up shooting my dads Rem model 76 (lever action nylon). Great gun. Went to a couple gun shows with my daughter and spotted a model 66 priced at almost $500. At the second gun show saw another priced at $300. Almost perfect condition. Didn't get 10 feet away before turning around and buying it. The next time my daughter came over to visit, she shot it and fell in love with it. I remember seeing these guns years ago going for around $100 all day long. Wish I would have bought a couple back then.

Not exactly comparison but I've been shot by an airsoft bb and it pain as hell! I'd say if toygun can deliver pain, a .22 would do it much much much worse.

My dad had a 22 Winchester bolt action hes 73 used to shoot 22 shorts out of when I was a Kid , My sister borrowed it and has fare as I know she sold it without telling my father Im so pissed it was super accurate , One day would like to buy one and give it to my father .
My dad was a gunsmith and he handcrafted his own. Rifles sometimes out of English Walnut wood and stained and did the whole thing, cut it out himself for a stock for bolt action rifle and he made this 243 Winchester that was Sweet, I mean it had a nice Barrel a excellent scope. Made from a Mauser action bolt action was made from a Mauser because it's reliable and durable rigid accurate. And he chambered in 243. Like I said. And hand load it is on rounds with the 77 grain boat tail. Hollow point Hornady match-grade. Bullet with I forgot the brand of casing and I forgot to charge load but I do know it was IMR 4350, but I don't know how much you put. And I also don't know the primers he used but he got on the first time shooting that gun after he got at zero. He was able to get three shot inside of a dime. He was able to cover his shots with a dime on the paper when he walked up to it. And he can do that consistently every single time at over a hundred yards like a hundred or something like that. And man, let me tell you the 243 Winchester, especially when loaded with the configuration Is a hot screaming load super high velocities flat trajectory And for all that don't know. The 243 Winchester is just a 308 Winchester also known as 7.62 x51mm. Next down to 6 mm diameter instead of 7.62 millimeter. And I don't even have my dad's name on it the date serial number it was all his handmade gun. Only thing you didn't make was the trigger and that was about it. He had He Aleve Mill and everything
When I was a teenager I inherited a family heirloom,an old ranger .22 single that is still to this day the most accurate gun for me I have ever shot out of many, I was on garden patrol one day for squirrel s, rabbits,groundhogs ect. When I encountered a deer , I went for an ear shot that was like flipping an off switch and I drug it back to the house my granddad couldn't believe it, now days there is no way with many other options I would choose to hunt deer with a .22, let alone a short but that's a time I'll never forget

I prefer a scoped shotgun myself; something with a 36 inch barrel. I used to shoot the 32 inch barreled shotguns, but it wasn't as accurate and not all of the smokeless powder was burning completely. Longer is always better.

Solid, unbiased review. I own 4 22’s - Ruger Mark III, Ruger Mark 4, Ruger Takedown and an old pump 22. While I appreciate the stopping power of higher calibers such as 9mm. I am insanely accurate with my 22 handguns. In the end, accuracy trumps caliber.
Now i feel more confident about owning a 22 for home defense

Old Marlin model 60 would be decent. No one wants to eat 18 rds of anything. Not my first choice but certainly would do the job

Dana Freeman I have killed 6 deer with .22. One shot each. The farthest one went after being shot was about 60 yards. I'm not as tough as a deer. Don't underestimate because of fools talk.
@@easyrider920 I know I'm butting in but just curious was it a pistol round and was it .22 LR .I got an old .22 LR would you recommend that for home defense if memory serves me correct the clip holds 12 rounds not including one in the chamber

Of all the rifles and pistols in my safe, my 42 year old Marlin 39A is my favorite. I've collected a LOT of small game for the table, plus I've dropped a lot of varmints that developed a taste for my wife's various fowl. And coyotes within 100 yards that think they might want a taste of livestock, find that a CCI Stinger ends their appetite permanently. I use .22 CB shorts for squirrel hunting, because the low velocity report doesn't put every squirrel in walking distance on high alert. And the CBs are great for clearing venomous reptiles from the pond where my grandkids fish quite often.
I have to wonder if my Marlin 39A, with a capacity of 26 shorts might be considered an assault weapon by those that seem to know so very much about firearms. :) And with 19 LR in place, it is truly a "load on Sunday; shoot all week long" game getter. If I had just one firearm, this would be the one. And, in fact, for some years, it was my only firearm.

Well, I guess I'm probably within your Dad's generation. And I did have a Nylon 66 which I bought in 1969, upon return from my tour as a USN Corpsman. Never set foot on a Navy vessel, but did get to see some interesting places with the USMC. But at that time I couldn't afford the Marlin. The 66 was sold because I didn't have the option of using shorts, unless I wanted to use it as a single shot.
I also have an affinity for the first rifle I qualified with in the USN, which was an M1 Garand. (Later the M14 and finally the M16). They wouldn't let me take that Garand home, so about 20 some odd years ago, I bought an M1 Garand Tanker. I'm sure you are familiar with General Patton's design effort, which created a carbine version of the "best battle rifle in history" that was 6" shorter and let tankers exit their battle wagon more easily. I'm always impressed with how accurate this rifle is...and how soft it shoots with gas operation. As with most of my firearms, I got them below cost due to my gunsmithing, which prompted me to get my FFL about 30 years ago.
I also have a Marlin 39A. Hard to find rifle. I got lucky and found it in a country hardware store in Hillsboro, Ohio, and yes; the gun is a tack driver. I also have Ruger 10 / 22, the Ruger SS Single Six with convertible cylinder for .22 Magnums, and a Hwritage aRough Rider convertible. I like my .22’s On another note I am a huge fan of air rifles. I have a Beeman R1 Magnum in
.177 caliber that is made in West Germany, and that is where most of the high end Spring Piston air rifles are made. The accuracy and power from them is very impressive. Obviously the larger the caliber the more FPE. I just purchased a .22 caliber made by Air Arms and is the S510 Ultimate Sporter XS which is a regulated PCP air rifle that generates 32 FPE at the muzzle and you might be able to get a little more. PCP stands for pre-charged pneumatic. These air rifles typically run off of 2,900 psi to just over 3,600 psi like my rifle does. You should see the .25, 30 caliber air rifles they have out now, they are generating up to 100 FPE at the muzzle. When you get into the big bore air rifles they are now getting over 600 FPE at the muzzle. The custom big bore air rifles are getting up to 1,800 FPE at the muzzle and possibly even more now. You Tuber and custom casting slugs Mr. Hollow Point has a 20mm custom big bore air rifle shooting a 1,150 grain slug generating 1,776 FPE at the muzzle using helium. Watch the video. It is mind boggling. They are hunting big game here in the USA where it is allowed, and taking down big game in Africa. I will be getting an FX Impact in .30 caliber that generates up to 82 FPE at the muzzle, and then an Air Force Texan SS in .45 caliber that generates up to 430 FPE at the muzzle. With all that being said, don’t underestimate a .22 powder burner, and don’t underestimate an air rifle. Air rifles been around longer than firearms and they used to go to war with them way back in the day, and yes they were lethal back then just as they are today. They are extremely accurate also.

Love your videos as always , My dad had a old Winchester bolt action he's 73 got it when he was 14 , I used to shoot 22 shorts through it , I recently bought a Henry 22 lever action , asked the gun shop where I bought if they still make 22 shorts they told me they do . I grew up shooting BB caps, CB caps and shorts. Never had much need of longs. Long rifles were used to kill cows that we butchered. Much respect for the 22.

Thank you for recognizing that pellet guns can be used to humanely hunt deer. The technology of modern, pre-charged pneumatic air rifles is largely underestimated.

Me too. I used a break action Savage over-under 20 gauge / 22. Still have the gun. If you need to eat, over under with a 22 will put food on the table.
I always hunt with shorts on.

I got one of the PCP Airguns that launches a .22 pellet at about 825 fps which works out to about 21 ft/lbs of energy. In your example the target short was producing approximately 45 ft/lbs and the short hp approximately 75. So the my pellet gun is not nearly as powerful as you rimfire rounds in the example. Having said that, there are more powerful pellet guns than mine out there and I can tell you from personal experience a 21 ft/lb projectile can easily take small game with good shot placement. So as you said don't underestimate these things they can do some serious damage.
Keep in mind a CCI Mini-Mag 40gr RN out of a rifle will produce around 135 FPE, and a CCI Stinger will produce around 190 FPE. PCP's putting out 21 FPE are certainly nice and quiet and are probably perfect for rabbits, squirrels and the like, but they aren't even close to the power of a 22LR, let alone the power of a 45 FPE 22 Short round.
@edwardschlosser1 You provide some good examples that show there are high powered (and more expensive than an entry level 22LR rifle ) air rifles out there that use larger calibers than the .22 LR. My point was on the roughly $200-300 21 FPE ubiquitous Gas Piston Break Barrel or Benjamin Fortitude entry level PCP type option that people like to compare with 22LR erroneously.
@@EuropaWill You got a point, Paul does acknowledge that there are "more expensive airguns that can take deer" in his video, so he is aware. My Hatsan Blitz .30 puts out 60 FPE with 61gr NSA HP Slugs (comparable to the 22 short or 22lr shot out of a pistol), and it's full/ semi auto with 16 round mags. Now this is a $1000 airgun, but it almost perfectly matches the energy of those caliber rounds, aside from the price (worth every penny get one before they ban them) it would be the best airgun to test against them. Everyone that is upset over his use of a break barrel .177 is because the test wasn't conducted to show that Airguns can be as capable as some firearms, don't get me wrong, firearms got airguns beat by a mile in terms of FPE.. but they are comparable in smaller/pistol caliber rounds.
My Will Piatt tuned Benjamin Marauder is definitely as powerful as a 22 short.But, liked you said, I spent allot of money on it.
I received several firearms from my grandfather after he passed, and we were able to shoot most of them while he was alive and it is an experience ill be grateful for as long as I live, what brought me to watch this video, in particular, is that one, or two, I can't remember right now of them were 22 short pistols and because they only fire short, and are a lot of fun to shoot I tend to pick up all the 22 short I can find when I do go shopping for ammo. its good to know that its also a useful firearm for pest control in the future or when I go camping in Vermont.

A 20fpe pellet gun is lethal with head shots, even chest shots, depending on clothing. People underestimate too much in society and this is why people get hurt and killed by 22lr and pellet rifles.
